Just FYI, the shop I work for charges $125 to put in an ibook drive, if you want someone to do it on teh cheap, shoot me a PM (i'm an apple certified tech, I slam 20-50 ibook HDDs in a week). You pay shipping both ways and I'll do it for $20. Just trying to help out a fellow [H]ardmember

You have to have the CD in the drive and hold "C" while you turn the computer on. You shouldn't have any problems after that.

Ars is very good, but I have to say, the [H]s mac forum is getting better. I've never had problems with Apple's forums being heavily moderated or anything. And I'm ALWAYS posted about flaws I've found, and asking for a fix. Usually people will reply and say "known issue, sorry pal".

MacDrive works flawlessly, use the trial if you are just doing a quick transfer one time.

Do you know how to get the airport card out? I believe it's in the battery bay on those, just pull out the card and antenna, and reseat both. Hopefully that'll take care of it. Other that that...you are looking at a repair situation...

Those G3s are pretty easy to get the RAM out of. Pull the keyboard up (two tabs on the sides) and then if their is the heatsink plate in the way pull that out as well. Get a screwdriver (small one) and pry up on the side of the proc card that doesn't have tabs going into the heatsink cage...

It will bounce around from 95-99 when it's fully charged....that's normal. On a battery care note though, I would unplug and let it run down to prolly about 50% charge at least once a week or so. Otherwise you will find yourself a year out with a battery that isn't behaving properly. As...

sleepless works for me. Checked temps and everything and for just web surfing/itunes everything is normal...the fan doesn't kick on at all. Don't tell me about wrecking my LCD, I understand all the risks there.

removing the switch would work fine...and I am fully capable of doing it (I do 6-7 ibook harddrive installs a week). The problem is that I don't want to run it never sleeping, I would just love the powerbook feature of running clamshell when keyboard is hooked up.

With external keyboard/mouse and display, my ibook goes to sleep when the lid is closed. Input from the keyboard will wake it, but it goes back to sleep after ~10 seconds. Any way to try this hack I hear abotu? I've got a 12" 1.0Ghz.

Just so everyone is clear. the over 8GB partition will work fine, until any part of that OS or page file ends up outside the 8GB mark. After that the OS will go looking for someone the IDE driver is not able to address properly, and you will end up with a majorly FUBARed system. I've seen...

Yes, it will show up as 2 harddrives on the desktop

15 gig will run fine, just make sure that the first partition is set up to be less than 8 gb large. All system software must be installed on that first 8 gb partition, or it cannot boot properly. Other than that, you are golden using a 15.

You do have the boot from CD option. Just put an OS CD in and hold the "C" key.

I'm not sure what other places do, but our shop charges 40 for a harddrive install like that. I would not recommend doing it yourself, that bottom case is not easy to get off at all if you don't know what you are doing.

Try wrapping the cable in question with some electric tape, sounds like it might be grounding out to the case.

I work at a mac reseller. I'll glance at our games and let you know what works on both. I know for a fact that neverwinter nights runs very well on an ibook, it worked fine on my old G3 800. Cannot remember if it's hybrid, I'll look today!
