How to get internet/RDP to test VMs and avoid touching production network

You would want to create a router/firewall VM with 2 NICs - one of them should be on the vswitch that has WAN access and one on the vswitch that has your Lab VMs. Your WAN on this gateway/firewall VM would probably be DHCP and then set the default route in your VMs or do DHCP.

FreeNAS 8 NAS and SAN Advice

I have a budget of $1500 total, I'm really only looking for good performance for the volume that I export via iSCSI as this will be for VMDKs. What do you suggest that fits that ball park in terms of budget?

FreeNAS 8 NAS and SAN Advice

[H]orde, I'm spec'ing out a new NAS/SAN server for use with my production network and VMware Lab. I've pretty much settled on platform but I haven't been able to get straight answers for a few questions I have. The plan so far is to get a dual-core Ivy Bridge and 16GB of RAM with a board...

    RAGE

Had a dumb issue today that made me rage. Windows Server 2008 R2 in DMZ hosting IIS, the box was running DNS, I removed that role and restarted the machine remotely. Machine never went down and now I can't login to in, it throws a "not enough storage available to perform this command". Tried to...

cENTOS 5.5 64-Bit fails to boot on default xenserver 5.6 fp1 install

Tried to install using the "Other install media template" and it works fine. The supplied CentOS template by Citrix is still not working. Here is a pastebin of the config. http://pastebin.com/KA10UBrv

cENTOS 5.5 64-Bit fails to boot on default xenserver 5.6 fp1 install

Posted this on the citrix forums, maybe I can get some help from the [H]orde instead. I'm having a hard time to get linux guests to run under my default install of xenserver 5.6 fp1. I can get windows guests to run with no problem but when I create a EL-based VM and try to boot, I get the...

Dlink DIR-655 can't port forward or use DMZ

I had some weird problems with my DLink before I switched to DD-WRT, it would forget the admin password if I changed it and I had to reset to defaults, I fixed it by reflashing the firmware even though there was no update. I would suggest upgrading the firmware on the device and if there are no...

    Home Lab Switch

Hello [H]ard! I'm looking at building a small lab for school and for getting some more experience with enterprise technologies, I'm going to be isolating this from my home network that I share with my roommates via a UTM box that I'm building but I need to find a 10/100/1000 switch to use for...

    Can I pass the Network+?

Post kinda related. I'm attempting to get the Security+ before the deadline and just bought a kindle version of a study guide. I think you can very easily pass any of the comptia exams as they really are entry-level if you read a book and memorize the concepts and ideas and not just facts.

    MSE V2 on Server 2008r2?

This depends on the services that the server is hosting. You'll probably want to use the excluded files processes and excluded files & locations to fine tune the performance on the boxes. At work we have a bunch of exclusions for servers depending on their role, excluding some application...

    LDAP

This can be done however you're going to have a hard time if you don't understand the underlying technologies at work here: ldap, sso, gina library, etc. I would point you to read this and see if it helps you http://erikberg.com/notes/auth.html

System Center Essentials 2010 too big for DVD ?

Instead of dealing with mounting ISOs, I usually just use 7-Zip to extract the contents of an image file. WinZip should also be able to do this.

Black Friday 2010 Storage Deals Thread

    ZFS/VMware guru needed

Even with all the non-sense of the NetApp lawsuit against Sun, now Oracle. I have not lost faith in ZFS. As long as it's made available in Oracle Solaris 10 and admins are using it, it will have a future.

    Questions regarding new filer build

Hello [H]ard, I'm spec'ing out a new lab build and working on getting my storage squared away first. I'm pretty sure i'm going to be running OpenFiler and had a question about where to place the OS. The options i'm tossing around in my head are 1.) CF to IDE adaptor -- place the OS on...

    Best/Cheapest E-ATX Case?

Building a VMWare ESX box with a ASUS K8N-DRE and 2x AMD Opteron 275 I have purchased the Motherboard and CPUs but now having trouble finding a E-ATX case. I have a full tower Ultra Dragon from a build a few years ago but that's just ATX. Any recommendations on E-ATX cases? Doesn't have...

    Is RHCT worth it?

What up [H]ard? I've been running linux for about 5 years now both on desktops and servers with most of my experience being Ubuntu workstations and cENT OS servers. At work I only have to support Windows XP clients but I feel I'm ready to make the jump to the Server Operations side and wanted...

"McAfee virus update brings the world to a halt, damages chip production"

The bug only affected XP SP3, so I also don't see a reason why they would have to shutdown their servers. About 150 of our boxes ended up getting the bad DAT which is a drop in the ocean, due mainly to have a DAT deployment task scheduled to run later in the day when more machines are on. Intel...

    Building your own ZFS fileserver

I'm jumping on the ZFS bandwagon. I was interested before and after reading all the posts in this thread I'm convinced. My plan is to run an OpenSolaris box with ZFS and then sharing out a NFS mount and having my ESXi box use that for storage. I'll post back once I have it all setup. :p
