Good idea on the kapton tape, I'll go buy some. Also, he heated the mobo in that spot twice (one for desoldering the old chip, one for resoldering the new one) but I'll only do it once. And I'll preheat the PCB as well with a hot plate (I already sorted out what setting I need to turn it to so...
Yes, reflow means the solder melts. But only directly under the chip I'll be heating, and only for a few seconds. The components on the other side (dunno yet if there are any at all directly under, but probably not - anyway, if there were any) will not reach the melting temp of the solder as...
Slightly related update, my email exchange with the tech support was, briefly: "my motherboard needs to be replaced, can I get one from you?" "No, we don't have it" "What do I do then" "Try a local repair shop" "Can you guys recommend one? Maybe one that knows how to deal with your stuff?"...
I plan on monitoring the temps with the IR thermometer, and not go over 235-240 C on the part. Should be enough to reflow without damaging stuff. Also the thermal profile and such, no more than 1-2 C per minute etc.
I was hoping that the parts on ebay had leaded solder, but they don't as it was...
I found this also:

Got some nice pointers from it. The griddle at 400F underneath sounds like a great idea. Screwing the board to it by multiple screws with 1/4 in spacers sounds good too. Heatgun with shaped nozzle (should be moldable from...
Here are my 2 cents on the XT5000T problem.
Let's review facts.
1.Laptops are consistently dying in the same manner (no video, fan on high, no HDD activity, system completely unresponsive).
2. Can be brought back sometimes, temporarily, by methods that involve heating the motherboard as...
They told me in the original email to contact the "service department", of which none is mentioned anywhere on their website. I also asked if they will waive the diagnostic charge if I tell them what is wrong and what needs to be replaced. They haven't replied.
Well mine died after 3 years, just last week. Blank screen, fan on high, nothing else. Don't really want to mess with the insides, bake stuff etc so I emailed Everex support. They now charge shipping both ways, plus a "diagnostic fee" of $65 before they even look at the laptop, plus whatever it...
Update to my wifi problem: I have replaced the wifi card with another one, and it's still not recognized by the laptop at all. At this point I don't think the card was bad, but something must have happened on the motherboard so it doesn't recognize anything plugged into the mini-PCIe slot...
Hmm. How about this: would someone be willing to send me their Atheros card that they've replaced with the MSI? Before the card kicked the bucket it worked fine, gave me no IRQ sharing trouble etc. If anyone is willing to do that please send me a PM.
I got the machine to POST and boot. I have to turn wireless off from the front switch, otherwise it won't POST. If I turn it back on at any time afterwards (including after booted into XP), the computer freezes instantly and I have to use the power button to turn it off.
I did that, the BIOS table got reset to default, but now the laptop doesn't POST anymore. When I try to power it up, it turns on but stays at a blank screen with the fan on high, no disk activity. I tried powering it up about 8 times so far, same result.
Grr. The everex forums are still down. Do they even plan on getting those back up again?
Anyway, here's my problem. My XT5000 is going on 2 years now, so it's way out of warranty. It's not modded in any way, except for adding an extra gig of memory and a second hard drive. Running XP happily...
Dunno, I stuck with the 32-bit version. I have no compelling reason to switch to 64-bit - yes, even in Linux more software creates problems in its 64-bit incarnation than 32-bit. I can easily see at least 2 drivers prone to issues - video and wireless, the same ones that many ppl have problems...
That's extremely unusual. I use Ubuntu (7.10, and before that 7.04) daily on the XT5000, never had a problem with it. Maybe you really do have a hardware problem.
In related news, here's a blog with a "review" of upgrading from Vista to XP.

So funny if it weren't true.
You can't install OSX natively on the Everex because OSX has no support for the nForce430 chipset, specifically for the SATA controller. As in, you can boot the installation DVD, but you can't install it because your HDD won't be recognized. There is a patch on the InsanelyMac forums made by an...
Even funnier, after you start up something like CoreTemp (http://www.thecoolest.zerobrains.com/CoreTemp/) to get accurate readings of the CPU temps, RMClock suddenly gives correct readings, which persist even after CoreTemp is shut down.
Again, since my posts were lost, here's the bottom line: updating from the original bios to C.1C does make a difference when RMClock is concerned. With the original bios, RMClock thinks the CPU load is always 80-90% and doesn't allow multiplier/voltage scaling. With the latest bios(C.1C) RMClock...
