I'm using a low profile Dell Inspiron 530S as an HTPC (Duo 2.4GHz, 4GB) with a 3 year old GeForce 8400GS (DDR2 512MB) that just died. I'm now trying to find a replacement low profile PCI Express video card for the rig. It doesn't need to be anything spectacular, but I would like to be able to...
No there's no standard 4 pin molex on the power supply. There are only 4 SATA connectors and one floppy connector. Although I now wonder if I might be able to find a floppy to fan adapter instead.....
I'm trying to mod an additional fan into one of my machines. I'm looking for a SATA to 3-pin fan adapter cable to use to power the fan. Are there any companies that sell these? I've had a really hard time finding one on the typical tech/modding websites.
My backup is to use 2 cables; SATA to...
I just opened up the power supply and reversed that fan. From the looks of it the fan was in fact seated backward. Both fans on the power supply blew outward, which I know is wrong.
I do have another fan (60mm stealth) that I'm planning to use to increase airflow in this area of the case...
The fan is definitely blowing in, which seems like an odd design in retrospect.
I've seen slot blowers but the case is low profile and I haven't been able to locate a low profile slot blower anywhere, they seem to only come in standard case sizes.
I wasn't sure if I should put this here or in the Overclocking/cooling forum, so admins please feel free to move this if appropriate.
I'm running an Inspiron 530s as seen here (not my rig, just a photo I found online). One problem I've had with the system is that the power supply blows...
I've been running my HTPC for a while now but have only recently started using it for PC gaming as well (Dell Inspiron 530S, duo 2.4GHz, 4GB, nVidia 8400GS). I was running through some diagnostics recently and noticed that the GPU is getting REALLY hot, even at low/no load. At first I thought it...
I recently upgraded my HTPC from XP to Win 7 Home Premium and decided to try out Windows Media Center (I had been using GB-PVR). Overall I like the layout and my wife finds it very easy to use. However we've found a couple of problems with video playback. Most notably a significant decrease in...
I avoid flash as much as humanly possible while surfing. I can't stand how flash ads can cause a website to come to a total crawl, sometimes even with a duo core processor. It's ridiculous and I use a number of flash blockers to avoid them.
At the moment the models that I'm looking at are...
Is there any way to setup a USB thumb drive so that it always has the same drive letter over multiple computers (running XP, Vista and Win7), without using the 'USB Drive Letter Manager' software? I was hoping that there may be some way to do it with an .ini file or something. Any suggestions...
I'm thinking about getting a netbook but I'm having trouble deciding which model to purchase. I need to keep the cost below $300. I've been looking mostly at two models;
Dell Mini 1018 (Atom N455 1.66GHz, 1GB DDR3 SDRAM, 160GB SATA 5400 RPM hard drive, 10.1" Widescreen Display (1024x600)...
Within 2 moths of my warranty expiring the LCD on my 4 year old laptop is beginning to die so I'm starting to look for a new machine. I don't do much processor intensive work at home anymore, and I'm trying to save money, so I'm looking at netbooks and low end laptops.
Does anyone have...
After wrestling with this for hours I finally found a solution that looks like it works to save the settings after closing the control panel and rebooting.
Open nVidia control panel
Make adjustment
Run television setup wizard (the screen will reset)
Make the same adjustment a second time...
I'm trying to setup my HTPC (XP with a GeForce 8400GS running brand new drivers downloaded tonight) on my new flatscreen tv. From the nVidia control panel I can adjust the top/bottom and left/right screen size to fit the tv. I will then 'apply' the settings, however as soon as I close the...
I have my google calendar synced with the native iPhone calendar app. I can see all my appointments that I add to the calendar from my various computers, however I never get an alarms for the appointments on my phone. Instead the only alarms I get are ones that I make on the phone, yet these...
I'm looking for 1 or 2 older laptops, circa P3/P4 generation. They need to be functional, have working USB ports and have a power cord (working battery is not required). A slot for an internal wireless card is preferred but not required. I also prefer Dells if possible for ease of swapping...
This is pretty much exactly what I was planning to do. However I ran into a few problems.
I pulled the drive, made the partitions and copied over the files. Unfortunatly I only have access to Vista/Win7 machines and thus far have been unable to 'easily' make a boot partition on the drive...
I am trying to install XP onto an older laptop for a small side project. Unfortunately the CD drive on the machine is dead and the machine doesn't have bootable USB support.
In order to install the OS I was thinking about pulling out the hard disk and putting it into an external enclosure...
The title pretty much says it all.
I recently got a new macbook pro at work running snow leopard. We use a lot of network drives to move around our data however when I mount these drives (using 'Connect to server') their icons don't appear on the desktop they way they have in earlier version...
I recently got a new Macbook Pro at work and prefer to use Firefox. For some reason when I'm typing into a dialog box the default FF spell check will underline misspelled words, however if I right click (i.e. double finger tap), there are no suggestions for correcting the word although all other...
Target disk mode worked great!! I couldn't find a firewire cord until this morning but once I did I was able to get all the files off the machine. Thanks for the help!!! :)
My roomate's MacBook pro (first gen) just had it's video stop working (LCD and secondary output aren't working). He doesn't have a recent backup and wants to try to rescue the files off the drive. The machine seems to boot fine as the startup sounds and email sounds (set to startup at login)...
The reason I want to do this is two fold. One, the hinge and screen are in rough shape on the unit. I was going to just trash the thing when it occurred to me to use it as an HTPC. I had to connect it to an outside monitor for the setup and now it's connected to the TV full time. The second...
I recently setup an old Dell Latitude D605 as a HTPC running WinXP. I'm trying to find any way I can that will let me wake and/or turn on the machine without opening the top.
I've looked at the possibility of remounting the power switch on the side of the machine but that doesn't seem like...
I'm looking to buy a used graphics tablet for my kids to use to 'draw' pictures to send to the family. Doesn't need to be anything super fancy. Just needs to work and have USB support. PM or reply if you have one to sell. Thanks!
Looking for;
Linksys WRT54G router
Willing to send;
5-6 PCI 10/100 ethernet cards
Netgear ps111w wired/wireless print server with dlink wireless adapter
misc low end AGP/PCI vid cards (pulls from a number of early machines)
PM me! :D
I have a Macbook Pro (silver kind) running OSX 10.5.8 that I use internet sharing on while I'm at work so I can connect my iTouch while I'm at my workstation (my office refuses to install wireless access points, don't ask). The internet sharing is setup with WEP and DHCP active.
I started...
Are there any command line arguments that can be used to start an application snapped to the left/right of a monitor?
I regularly launch multiple applications simultaneously from .bat files and I've been trying to find a way to get them to start at specific locations on my monitor(s)...
I'm still waiting for the phone to arrive in the mail. But I will let you know how it goes.
I agree with you though, the required data plans are such a scam. I'll never understand how Verizon can legally get away with this. It's bad enough that most of their better phones come massively...
I'm trying to upgrade the ram on my laptop without breaking the bank. I'm trying to find 2 sticks of PC-6400 (800MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMMS. I'm looking to spend ~$50 or so for the pair.
If you can help me out or point me in the direction of a retailer drop me a reply.
Last week my wife sent my cell phone through the wash. So this week when the Alias 2 went on sale she picked one up for me online (I wanted a flip phone that had a qwerty keyboard). I didn't realize it at the time but apparently Verizon now 'requires' a data plan for this phone. I don't want the...
I use a macbook pro (the earlier silver version) with OSX 10.5.8 as my work computer. Today I started noticing that the machine will randomly spike CPU and bandwidth to 100% ever 10-15minutes (I use iStat Menus to monitor this), with the spike lasting about 2-5 minutes each. During this time the...
Does anyone have experience using USB touchscreens that you can put on your laptop/LCD/CRT monitor? They seem like they might be useful, particularly on laptops when you don't (or can't) use a trackpad.
There are a number of online vendors but I can't seem to find any demo units in stores to...
Hey all,
I'm trying to find one or two sticks of 2GB PC6400 (DDR2 800) laptop ram for my mother-in-law's laptop. She decided that it would be a good idea to take out the ram to clean out some dust, then promptly stepped on the modules when she got up off the floor. Awesome.
I've donated to...
I recently started using Evernote and have been very happy with the program. Syncing notes between my PC (home), Mac (work), and iPod Touch (commuting on train) has been REALLY helpful.
As helpful as the service is there are a few options that Evernote lacks, in particular they don't allow...
