Rescue files off a MacBook

My roomate's MacBook pro (first gen) just had it's video stop working (LCD and secondary output aren't working). He doesn't have a recent backup and wants to try to rescue the files off the drive. The machine seems to boot fine as the startup sounds and email sounds (set to startup at login) both chime after you enter the password to a blank screen.+

Is there any way to rescue the files without having the monitor active? Unfortunatly we only have win 7 machines to use, although I have an external hard disk bigger than the laptop drive if that helps.+

Is there any way to easily rescue the files or clone the disk under this situation?

Thanks for the help!

boot it up in target disk mode, it becomes a firewire drive that way. (hold T at boot)

You'd need something on the windows machines to read the Mac format, though, like MacDrive.

if it has network access you can try to mount the disks over the network (providing he's setup sharing already... can't do it if you can't see anything)

Thanks for the tip! Is there any way to connect to the machine if windows sharing isn't setup?

Target drive mode!?!?

Ugh, where was that a month ago. Cool feature though!

Target drive mode, MacDrive 8, you may even need the GPT mounter add-on. But don't fool around, use MacDrive and make your life easy.

DrNic2032, Target Disk mode basically turns your MacBook into an external hard drive. Doesn't matter if windows sharing is on or not. Doesn't load OSX or anything.

Though I think it requires using the FireWire port (I have never tried the USB, so don't know)

Target disk mode worked great!! I couldn't find a firewire cord until this morning but once I did I was able to get all the files off the machine. Thanks for the help!!! :)
