This is likely because that HGST model supports the new SATA 3.3 spec for Power Disable:
"The “Power Disable” feature is a new industry standard feature defined for both SATA and SAS devices. This new feature allows the host system to perform a hard reset to the hard drive (HDD). The new...
I'm also trying to figure out if the Focusrite Scarlett Solo (2nd Gen) would be a better DAC than the Audioquest Dragonfly Black. It seems like it has more options.
Any reason why it's better to have the DAC closer to the speakers? I can either have the DAC connected to the PC via USB then a 8ft cord to the speakers or I can have an 8ft USB cable to go to the DAC which is next to the speakers. I'm guessing I should get shielded as it will travel over a gas...
So I'm trying to upgrade my computer audio. I'm going to be buying a DAC and a desktop 2.1 system. I'm not too
knowledgeable about this so I was wondering if the following would work. I have a 5.1 setup in the same room so I'm not looking for loudness, just quality. I'd prefer not to get a sub...
I've also purchased it and can verify it's been great for me, had it 8 months now. Once in a while the UEFI BIOS screen will be twitchy with the mouse freezing up but other than that no problems.
Thanks for the insight. I already have my gaming rig in a Granada so I'm looking for a different type of rig for this one. I was thinking of dual socket but that's double the power and chances are I'd rather get a newer, lower power processor when I want to ugprade.
I'll check out Remote FX...
I have a separate gaming PC so really the only VM I would be running that would have output to a real world device would be the HTPC VM. The server will be right under my TV so that's the reason for me wanting to run an HTPC VM there. I understand what you mean about more bang for your buck...
Most likely Hyper-V 2016.
I would take advantage of the quad channel memory controller, however I've read that there's not much benefit going from dual to quad channel like there is from single to quad. I'm aware I could saturate the 850 Evo, however, I think to start off with it should be...
It's for non technical people, but I'm sure they could learn 8.1 if they could save money from 10. I'm mainly wondering if there's any technical reasons to go to 10 or not. As you said there isn't much more reason than DX12, I just wanted to double check. I would be using Kodi most likely as...
Are there any benefits to using Windows 10 versus 8.1? The majority of the time it will be used for Kodi watching IPTV / Netflix / Youtube / etc and there will be light gaming at 1080p.
The only two advantages I can think of are that DirectX 12 and the apps. Although I'm not sure if apps on 10...
I haven't seen a post on this in the forums and I'm in the market so I thought I would post one. As it is now I'm not 100% sure if there's much difference between any of them due to very few changes from the reference design. Although some of them do require a power cable.
As most people would...
I'm building a new server that will be running multiple VMs 24x7. It will also be used as the point of entry for Internet into the residence so it's important it runs very stable. The computing won't be very hardcore, however, I am building it so that it will hopefully last at least seven years...
I'm just wondering if anyone can shed some light onto this? I've got two USB Drives and they have vastly different encryption speeds and I'm wondering what the reason is or if the second drive is bad?
My CPU is a i5-6600 with AES hardware acceleration. My motherboard is an ASrock z170m...
After doing A LOT of research, I'll be going down the Xeon D path. I was looking at the single use boards but I determined that I also want to run some VMs and setup a NAS as well. This led me to start researching the Xeon E3's. Then the Xeon D's came out and were much more along the lines along...
I got the ASrock Z170m Extreme4 and it's been pretty good so far. The reason I got it over the ASUS Pro motherboard was it had USB 3.1 A and C as well as an optical out for audio. IMHO that's worth more than the slightly better ASUS BIOS I would say.
I'm trying to find some information out on these drives. I was wondering if anyone has tried them? I can't find any reviews on them and they're also apparently hard to find in North America.

Samsung P3 Portable External HDD Datasheet
My only requirement in this is to ensure that my data is safe long term so I don't mind spending more if there are definable benefits. This is only for a detachable USB drive for onsite backup. I'm not looking for a NAS as I will already have this data on existing live HDDs.
I've read many...
I'm going to be getting this board and want to get 32GB of RAM and wanted it to ideally utilize the 3000* XMP profile but I wondering two things:
1) Will speeds higher than the DDR4 2400/2133 work? I will be only using the XMP profiles as I don't want to get into anything too complicated. I...
The CPU will most likely be a Xeon E5-2620v3. The reason I'm going with this CPU is I require PCIe Access Control Services (ACS) support on the CPU in order to properly virtualize PCIe passthrough. This CPU also has support for IOMMU super pages. Overclocking isn't a concern but I would be...
I'm building out an old box for a VM / pfSense box. Unfortunately, it only has SATA II so since I have some SSD's I wanted to upgrade to SATA III via a PCIe 2 controller card. According to my research these seem to be chipsets that are out there but I'm unable to confirm if they are all...
Does anyone have any experience ordering from China? I've heard they sell a lot of fake items, but this one is half the price of the other one with free shipping. Not sure if it's worth it if it might be fake. I'm not sure if there's anyway to tell...
Thanks, good to know. Haven't had to worry about hardware in a while.
Unfortunately, the link from above on eBay only has shipping to the US and I'm not able to contact the user so I can't buy it. Do you think this one is OK? I can't find any cheaper ones shipping from the US. I don't really...
Thanks for the info everyone. I've inquired about that second card to purchase. Which slot on my board would be the PCIe2 x4? I'm guessing the last one would operate in x4 mode? Would putting an x4 card into an x16 slot still work?
The Asus website says this about my board "3 x PCIe 2.0 x16 (at...
I'm putting together a pfSense box and unfortunately only have a PCIe 2 x4 slot available for the NIC. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for ones that would be good? I'm wanting an Intel one since those are the most compatible with pfSense.
I found this one but am unsure if it...
I need an HTPC case for an ATX build. I'm moving my exiting build into a new computer case so I can put it in a cabinet. I will be overclocking the x5675 that I ordered probably to about 4GHz. The size of the case needs to be: <=17"W x <=25"H x <=18"D. I'll have the following items in it...
I have a limited space for a monitor and I'm currently using a Dell U3011. After seeing the new monitors that are coming out with bigger screens and higher resolutions I'm wanting to upgrade. The space I have is 36" wide so I need something that fits into that space. I'm just wondering if there...
I'm trying to figure out if there's any hardware routers out there that may be able to handle an OpenVPN connection that's symmetrical for over 100mb? I know that it would be quite CPU intensive, but as there would be only that one connection running 24/7 I was wondering if there might be a...
I'm looking at building a new box for a bunch of VMs and would love to have it be able to do gaming as well. I'm wondering if either ESXi or Hyper-V for a Windows 8.1 VM and then used that for gaming? I've read about PCI pass through as well as Intel GVT and I was wondering if those were...
Thanks for the links and letting me know about SFX ps form factor, didn't know that one! The Pico looks cool but I think I'd rather just get a regular ps for this build. Though I think my next one will definitely be something along the embedded lines once I can do more research.
I read the...
Magoo, thanks I'll look at those cases. Fifth Horsman, you're right about trying to find a unicorn so I've decided to drop the NAS requirement for this build and need just a 1x2.5 bay for my SSD and a 1x3.5 bay for a 4TB HDD.
My new build if you refresh http://pcpartpicker.com/p/Hd4sgs...
I'm building a software router / NAS / WAP PC and am trying to find out where I can buy a Haswell refresh T CPU? Specifically, I'm looking for the 4690T, 4590T, or 4460T models. Are they only for sale for system integrators, is that why it's hard to find them or they just haven't arrived on the...
I'm building a mini-ITX PC for a software router / NAS / WAP combo and am having a hard time finding a quality low wattage power supply. I need something that is small and would preferably fit in a decent mini-ITX case. I would prefer to pay for quality as I hope to have this last from five to...
Thanks for the info. I'm looking to future proof a bit and if I want to do something else in addition to the router/firewall I can have that extra horsepower with an i3. It would also definitely be of the T variety to keep the power requirements to a minimum. Though the only requirement for CPU...
I'm trying to find a good motherboard for building a BSD PfSense firewall / router. I'm looking for something that might be able to be a bit more versatile than a regular pre-built appliance from Cisco etc.
My main application will be using the box as an OpenVPN client so I will require...
Those sound interesting. I've heard the Toshiba drives are reliable, plus they're 3 x 1GB platters. I could do:
~214 - 2 x Toshiba 3TB HDKPC08 in software raid one
I wonder what the difference between that and the 4TB HGST is reliability wise. Is the error rate for both 1 in 10^15 or is...
Those HGST NAS drives look very interesting, thanks for mentioning those guys. I'm wondering what the difference between one of those and the enterprise drives would be reliability wise as the NAS drives are about 60% of the enterprise ones.
(Edit: Looks like the NAS only have 1 million MTBF...
Thanks for the great information everyone. So I've done some additional research and am now trying to decide between the following. After reading all of your opinions and doing some research on my own, I'm kind of leaning towards the 4TB HGST. Is there a difference between HGST 0F14688 and...
