what is this "Boot Strap" feature? does it have anything to do with my aforementioned voltages or FSB speed, and can it be adjusted in the BIOS? That's interesting that your machine does that...I don't even know if that qualifies as not posting; I can't even get video on mine in about 1 of 10...

well the FSB is running at default 1.3v, and is set at 416 mHZ I believe, to get me up to the 2.6 GHZ minimal overclock and the RAM runs slightly overclocked at 833 mHZ. Should I adjust the FSB voltage upward, is the "boot strap" an adjustable setting in the BIOS?

I'm not sure if Intel has something similar, but I'd love to hear thoughts from other posters on this...is speedstepping similar? I may have that tured off already....

I have my C2D E6400 running at 2.6 GHz rock solid at 1.2v, 1.15 with vdroop.

wow. downed the voltage to bare minimum at 1.2v; vdroop is NO MORE than 1.16-1.18. appears to be rock solid stable and does not exceed 55C after I turned the FSB down to 1.3v. lookin' good on the stock cool!!!!

also, my vCore has fluctuated from 1.375 at default to 1.29v at 100% load. should this be a concern?

so I went back, unhinged the HSF, cleaned off thoroughly with alcohol, cleaned off the CPU, reapplied the thermal paste, and reseated the HSF. My temps @ 2.6 GHz dropped down to where they do not rise above 65C @ 100% load in orthos. obviously this is not world-beating type performance or...

I DIDNT KNOW THAT WAS A PASTE ON THERE!!!! dang. now please help me with cleaning this crap off. i plan on starting with a Q-tip to remove the excess material, and then applying the 91% alcohol i just purchased, either on a swab or on the Q-tip. does this sound right? should i remove the CPU?

well i didn't realize that was paste on there...but yes i dabbled a LIGHT coating of the silver paste on top of the CPU; if there is too much paste, can this cause a jump in temps? is this the root of my 70C @ 2.86 GHz issue?

could this be the culprit behind my 70C temp readings. I never removed the stock paste/adhesive stuff on the Intel HSF.

oh DADGUMN! i DID NOT remove the thermal pad on the stock HSF before applying the thermal paste, is this why my temps skyrocketed to 70C!???

yes. I understand that Orthos is basically Prime95, but with more detail as to your machine's status. I ran Orthos for about 20 minutes and got temps around 70C...I am not trying to figure out how to reseat and seal up the HSF with the CPU.

so I got it off with ease using a method recommended by Bill. just used a screwdriver and got it off by going counterclockwise. please assist me in putting it back on. i am going to go purchase some 90% alcohol to clean both the bottom of the HSF and the top of the processor...should I remove...

interesting. using the PC6400 gold, I presently have it set to 833 MHz from the BIOS and without issue. were you get problems at anything past 800?

crazy. it goes from 70C at full load on the CPU stress in orthos to 57C a second or two after the stress is off. is that even possible!? from 70 to 55 in literally 2 seconds?

dammit now I'm torn about what to do! after playing FSX for an hour, temps settled in the 60C range; granted shouldn't be that hot at this speed probably, especially with the Nine Hundred keeping the interior ~22C. i HATE messing with that HSF garbage and those 4 connectors are hard as hell...

Just started load testing on an E6400 running 333 MHz x 8.0 for 2.6 GHz. Using stock cooling. Temps currently fluctuating from 71C to 65C. Not sure how sustainable this should be....

Granted, it's stock cooling, but this may not be sustainable. Temp fluctuates from as high as 71 to as low as 65. Any suggestions? Turn fan on max all the time? Get a new fan? Stop the 2.6 GHz overclock? Do these things often start out high and then settle at a lower temp? Any advice you...
