Machine will occassionally not post when turned on, suggestions?

what is this "Boot Strap" feature? does it have anything to do with my aforementioned voltages or FSB speed, and can it be adjusted in the BIOS? That's interesting that your machine does that...I don't even know if that qualifies as not posting; I can't even get video on mine in about 1 of 10...

Machine will occassionally not post when turned on, suggestions?

well the FSB is running at default 1.3v, and is set at 416 mHZ I believe, to get me up to the 2.6 GHZ minimal overclock and the RAM runs slightly overclocked at 833 mHZ. Should I adjust the FSB voltage upward, is the "boot strap" an adjustable setting in the BIOS?

Machine will occassionally not post when turned on, suggestions?

I'm not sure if Intel has something similar, but I'd love to hear thoughts from other posters on this...is speedstepping similar? I may have that tured off already....

Machine will occassionally not post when turned on, suggestions?

yes, the system is PERFECTLY stable running orthos for 24 hours. I'm guessing it's just the motherboard, but am not entirely sure. It probably does it 1 out of 10 times I would guess. I just hope it doesn't have a detrimental effect on my HD when doing this. I originally thought it was...

Machine will occassionally not post when turned on, suggestions?

So, I'm not sure if this is the right forum for this or not, but every now and then (like once every three times or so), my machine will not post after it's been turned on. I don't believe that it's a problem with the 8800 GTX (although I do NOT get video when this happens), but it could be...

E6400 Revision B2: extremely low voltages at 2.6 GHz

um ok, perhaps if I were to seriously OC, but not for right now. I seem to be very fortunate in that my chip does not require a lot of voltage to be stable.

E6400 Revision B2: extremely low voltages at 2.6 GHz

so I apparently have the Revision B2 chip, and I'm curious as to how much people on here know about it. I attempted a slight overclock, wanting to go to just ~2.6GHz. Well at first I was extremely discouraged because, following a guide from Tom's Hardware, I upped the FSB to 333 MHz and upped...

Yup. Revision B2. Is this a good thing?

So please lend some final advice on the CPU voltages...

well, it appears as though my CPU's high temp readings may not have been a function so much of using stock cooling and too much thermal paste (although that certainly didn't help), as much as it was that my CPU appears incredibly suited for low voltages. running the cpu at 1.375 was too much for...

No removal of stock HSF paste before applying thermal paste...did this jump my temps?

nah it really doesn't, especially in conjunction with alcohol. one thing I used that worked very well were my fiancee's cosmetic non-latex face wedges. you can find these at duane reade or CVS or Walgreen's. they are triangular shaped and have a kind of rubbery type texture to them and they are...

Who here is using more then 1.5Vcore to there C2D CPU everyday?

I have my C2D E6400 running at 2.6 GHz rock solid at 1.2v, 1.15 with vdroop.
  14. O

No removal of stock HSF paste before applying thermal paste...did this jump my temps?

wow. downed the voltage to bare minimum at 1.2v; vdroop is NO MORE than 1.16-1.18. appears to be rock solid stable and does not exceed 55C after I turned the FSB down to 1.3v. lookin' good on the stock cool!!!!
  15. O

UPDATE: after reseating HSF, orthos temps @ load = 63-65C; is this sustainable?

oh wow! just cut the voltage down to 1.2 (1.15vdroop) at full load, and the machine is running BRILLIANTLY. i had set the voltage to 1.375, which was obviously a voltage suggested by a guide which had 3+ GHz speeds in mind. at 333 MHz FSB, this baby hums right along, idling between 40-44C...

UPDATE: after reseating HSF, orthos temps @ load = 63-65C; is this sustainable?

also, my vCore has fluctuated from 1.375 at default to 1.29v at 100% load. should this be a concern?

UPDATE: after reseating HSF, orthos temps @ load = 63-65C; is this sustainable?

so I went back, unhinged the HSF, cleaned off thoroughly with alcohol, cleaned off the CPU, reapplied the thermal paste, and reseated the HSF. My temps @ 2.6 GHz dropped down to where they do not rise above 65C @ 100% load in orthos. obviously this is not world-beating type performance or...

No removal of stock HSF paste before applying thermal paste...did this jump my temps?

man oh man handling the CPU makes me ever so nervous. how do I properly handle it? just hold the edges and not touch the prongs? how much alcohol do I use, and what do I put it on...Q tip or cotton swab? BLECHSTAS!

No removal of stock HSF paste before applying thermal paste...did this jump my temps?

I DIDNT KNOW THAT WAS A PASTE ON THERE!!!! dang. now please help me with cleaning this crap off. i plan on starting with a Q-tip to remove the excess material, and then applying the 91% alcohol i just purchased, either on a swab or on the Q-tip. does this sound right? should i remove the CPU?

No removal of stock HSF paste before applying thermal paste...did this jump my temps?

well i didn't realize that was paste on there...but yes i dabbled a LIGHT coating of the silver paste on top of the CPU; if there is too much paste, can this cause a jump in temps? is this the root of my 70C @ 2.86 GHz issue?
  22. O

No removal of stock HSF paste before applying thermal paste...did this jump my temps?

could this be the culprit behind my 70C temp readings. I never removed the stock paste/adhesive stuff on the Intel HSF.
  23. O

    AS5 is JUNK!

oh DADGUMN! i DID NOT remove the thermal pad on the stock HSF before applying the thermal paste, is this why my temps skyrocketed to 70C!???

Starting overclock process at 333 FSB, please suggest voltages for the following:

yes. I understand that Orthos is basically Prime95, but with more detail as to your machine's status. I ran Orthos for about 20 minutes and got temps around 70C...I am not trying to figure out how to reseat and seal up the HSF with the CPU.

so I got it off with ease using a method recommended by Bill. just used a screwdriver and got it off by going counterclockwise. please assist me in putting it back on. i am going to go purchase some 90% alcohol to clean both the bottom of the HSF and the top of the processor...should I remove...

any thoughts on the thermal pastes or advice on how to get that hsf off there?

Starting overclock process at 333 FSB, please suggest voltages for the following:

another note, as you can read in the above post involving temps, I am just trying to get this temperature issue under control before going anywhere past 333 MHz x 8. these temps are absurd!

Starting overclock process at 333 FSB, please suggest voltages for the following:

interesting. using the PC6400 gold, I presently have it set to 833 MHz from the BIOS and without issue. were you get problems at anything past 800?

Darn! E6400 running at 70C after 7 mins of orthos at 2.6 GHz.

ok, so quick question that COULD explain this problem. i understand that the stock Intel cooler comes with some kind of thermal paste on the bottom of it. well, i applied some silver-based thermal paste from CompUSA, dabbled on the chip, as suggested at THW...would it pose a problem if those two...

Darn! E6400 running at 70C after 7 mins of orthos at 2.6 GHz.

yeah i suppose i'll just lock the CPU at 1.375 manually and disable all "auto" settings... so how in the hell do i get this Intel HSF off the mobo? rotate the damn pegs counterclockwise and pull up??? shit i hate this garbage.

Darn! E6400 running at 70C after 7 mins of orthos at 2.6 GHz.

that's unbelievable and quite discouraging. i realize that these Allendales are supposedly rated to sustain up to 85C, but still it is disconcerting that i'm getting 70C after 20 minutes or so total. somebody recommend me a cheap hsf fan that is better than the stock intel cooler so i can...
  33. O

Darn! E6400 running at 70C after 7 mins of orthos at 2.6 GHz.

crazy. it goes from 70C at full load on the CPU stress in orthos to 57C a second or two after the stress is off. is that even possible!? from 70 to 55 in literally 2 seconds?
  34. O

Darn! E6400 running at 70C after 7 mins of orthos at 2.6 GHz.

dammit now I'm torn about what to do! after playing FSX for an hour, temps settled in the 60C range; granted shouldn't be that hot at this speed probably, especially with the Nine Hundred keeping the interior ~22C. i HATE messing with that HSF garbage and those 4 connectors are hard as hell...
  35. O

Darn! E6400 running at 70C after 7 mins of orthos at 2.6 GHz.

so that shouldn't have anything to do with the voltage then? is it the case that more voltage = more temp?
  36. O

Darn! E6400 running at 70C after 7 mins of orthos at 2.6 GHz.

my voltage is only at 1.34, and I have it set to auto via the BIOS. my presumption is that upping the voltage to 1.375 would increase my temps, but I could be incorrect. thoughts?

    CPU Temp Thread

Darn! E6400 running at 70C after 7 mins of orthos at 2.6 GHz.

Granted, it's stock cooling, but this may not be sustainable. Temp fluctuates from as high as 71 to as low as 65. Any suggestions? Turn fan on max all the time? Get a new fan? Stop the 2.6 GHz overclock? Do these things often start out high and then settle at a lower temp? Any advice you...
