Good find, did not notice the speed difference between the P1 and the WD Blue!
What do you think about waiting for Zen 3? Will there be an entry level equivalent to the 3100/3300x available in the near future? Or will they start at the top and work their way down.
Hello everyone,
I am looking to assemble a cost efficient gaming build, should be around $600, the goal is to get best performance/price available.

That is essentially what I did, I used the following single thread value list:
https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_value_available.html#single-thread
I got the G5420 for the price of a G5400 which pretty much makes it the best single thread value you can buy. The i3-9100F is probably the optimal...
I will certainly be giving it a try, especially now that it is getting more adoption from VPN providers. I figured if I build a box that can hit my speeds on OpenVPN, as inefficient as it may be, then I will be able to do it with wireguard easily. If the goal was wireguard only, I would...
The main reason I decided to build my own box is due to OpenVPN. I have a gigabit connection and I would like to try and achieve somewhere close to gigabit speeds over OpenVPN. This will require good single thread performance which I was unable to find in most of the single board computer...
When is Suricata or Snort needed? This is my first pfsense build so I am still learning this stuff.
I dont plant on forwarding any ports to/from the outside (no SSH from outside), however I guess ports 80/443 will still need to be open for HTTP/S traffic? Would I need Suricata then?
I am planning a build that can theoretically handle 1Gbit/s VPN encryption/decryption. The goal was to get a CPU with AES-NI, iGPU, good single thread performance (OpenVPN is only single threaded), perhaps some extra cores for Wireguard use in the future. A Mobo with dual Intel NICs (for...
I just noticed on their tech spec page that it will be available "second half of 2020"

I have been holding out for the new Lenovo Legion 5 laptop however I am quite disappointment to see that only the Intel variant comes with an RTX 2060. See Lenovo:

Is it possible to buy a desktop version of the RX 5500? (non XT version)
https://www.amd.com/en/products/graphics/amd-radeon-rx-5500
This seems like it would be the ideal entry level gaming card however I can only find the more expensive RX 5500 XT for sale.
I wanted to get the B550 in order to have PCIe 4.0 and support for Zen3, so I think I will stick with that. As for the SSD that is good advice, I will either get a ~50$ 500GB version or a $100 1TB version, the samsung ones seem overpriced.
What would you suggest? I was looking for a RX 5500...
Hello everyone,
I am looking to assemble a budget gaming build (~$500) and I am looking for your opinions on my part list. I will be building this end of June, so I am assuming for now that the B550 board will be available and that prices/availability will have returned to normal...

Interesting development here:
I re-ran the good stick of ram, it put up 30 passes with no errors so I was about to conclude the mobo is fine... I decided to run the same stick of ram in DIMM2 (all previous testing in DIMM1) , it put up 10 errors in ~15 passes. I am leaning towards concluding...
Totally understood and I agree with you, a large part of wanting to revive this build is pure nostalgia.
The good news is I have a passive ASUS GT610 running in there now, it's silent and looks like it consumes 29W maximum, which is not terrible.
I have no desire to run plex or other media...
Ran memtest for a few hours with 2x 1GB sticks in the board and it had 2 errors on test #3 after ~6 passes, I removed 1 stick and ran it overnight, no errors after 17 passes...testing the other stick now, if it returns errors I will conclude that this stick is bad, other stick is good and the...
Hello everyone,
I have an old motherboard which I replaced some dead capacitors on and I would like to run some tests on the board to determine if it is stable or not.
What is the best way to test motherboard stability?
I assume the approach is to use a CPU and RAM which is proven to be...
I know a lot of these boards have bad capacitors nowadays, let me know if you have one regardless as I have some of the correct caps to do the repairs.
Hey Everyone,
I am searching for a socket 939 DFI Lanparty nF4 motherboard, could be the Ultra-D or the SLI-DR
Here is a picture of the Ultra-D to stir up some memories:
Let me know if you have one kicking around!
Thanks for looking :)
Went with the advice from the thread and got a Shield, absolutely loving it so far. The GeforceNow cloud gaming service is a real nice bonus feature. Just need to get my NAS setup finalized to test out Kodi on this little beauty.
Here is what I came up with as a cheaper version of my previous list:
CPU: AMD - Ryzen 3 2200G 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor ($98.89 @ Amazon)
Motherboard: ASRock - AB350 Gaming-ITX/ac Mini ITX AM4 Motherboard ($114.90 @ Amazon)
Memory: Crucial - Ballistix Sport LT 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR4-2400...
Hi Everyone,
So I am in the process of putting together a parts list for a new HTPC. The goal is to make a future proof HTPC which can do the following:
4k @ 60Hz (HDMI 2.0 needed)
HDCP 2.2 compatible (netflix 4k streaming)
HDR
Onboard graphics
Quiet
mITX form factor (small)
Budget $500-600...
What exactly is the difference between the B350 and B450 boards? The price difference is not that big so I figured I should future proof, but I couldn't really tell any differences...
Goal is to build a 4k/60Hz ready HTPC with hdmi 2.0 and hdcp 2.2, budget was ~$500 so this is over, not sure where to cut.
PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant
CPU: AMD - Ryzen 5 2400G 3.6GHz Quad-Core Processor ($159.99 @ Newegg)
Motherboard: ASRock - B450 GAMING-ITX/AC Mini...
Almost two years have passed and I am still searching for this board, it seems like the GIGABYTE H370N WIFI does HDMI 2.0 via an MCDP2800 and it supports HDCP 2.2.
Is this the only option nowadays or are there any other boards doing this? Maybe without the MCDP2800?
Back when I made this thread I decided not to build the htpc since there were no mini itx mobos with hdmi 2.0...
Almost two years have passed, where do we stand? Any Mini itx boards out there supporting hdmi 2.0?
Looks like the GIGABYTE H370N WIFI may do the job.
