Fallout 4

I've made a big mistake. First time FO player here. I apparently used up my perk points on day 1 on things I totally don't need / want / use but I was too noob to understand I shouldn't try and make my character a jack of all trades. Is my only option to give up on my level 12 character and start over and learn from my mistakes?

There isnt a reset perks potion that i know of but you can change your set special points with console and i think you can also add points for perk but its basically cheating although you can just adjust it as you like

the perk system they use are new here, it did not used to work that way. Anyway there are console commands to strip perks and then add points. kind of a pain, but the only solution, depending on how much time you have in the game. missionwise it probably takes about 5 per level and that appears to remain consistent. But yeah, you can be much more effective specializing in 3 categories

Oh, so I can drop into a console and remove perks I accidentally allocated to anything related to VATS and move them to things I now see more relevant? I understand it's cheating in a sense but I don't want to start all the way over and lose my builds and other cool experiences. I don't want to earn more than I already have, just the ability to correctly apply them now that I understand to some small degree what the fuck I'm doing.

Nope, no need to start over. There's no level cap, so your character can always be maxed out in everything. Just pick something you want next time you level up and go from there.

Like CEpeep said, the game is pretty "easy" in terms of making any of the perks (in any combination) viable ways to play. Generally speaking if you play the game in smart ways, such as crafting the best guns and armors you can at your level, taking time to piece together Legendary gear, etc, even if you have points scattered around you should do OK. It is a bit of an "accessible" RPG so it doesn't penalize you too harshly for a jack of all trades type of build.

edit: I grabbed Science! 3 as soon as it was available and crafted my Two Shot laser rifle with the best damage mods. Thing puts out like 152 damage plus fire damage and has a very good rate of fire. Definitely the best weapon I have so far @ level 29.

edit2: Also found an Incendiary combat shotgun which is wayyy too much fun to use. :D

soz..... I went through and started cleaning up my inventory. gotta love the build system compared to the shitty houses you would get in previous games. Also cool that all the magazines are different

So if you get max relationship with a companion, you get a perk. Does that perk stay even if you leave them / they lose relationship with you?

I totally agree. I don't get why I've seen some reviews (such as from a couple people on [H], Angry Joe etc) claiming that the whole crafting/building system feels "tacked on." It's a HUGE addition to the game with really fun options that it gives players... how is it possibly a bad thing, especially when you don't have to do ANY of it if you don't find it fun (apart from a few minor quests.)

So if you get max relationship with a companion, you get a perk. Does that perk stay even if you leave them / they lose relationship with you?

If you leave them it stays. I don't know if you can lower the relationship and take the perk away... I doubt it though.

Pretty sure it stays. I've only romanced Cait so far and she looks pretty nice in that BOS Officer "uniform".

Just wish she'd stop swapping out to her default shotgun all the time. Gave her a much better one and had her equip it but she keeps swapping back

Love some of her banter though. :D

Did you give her ammo as well? If you give a companion a weapon of the same type as their default choice, they won't consume ammo (and hence don't need any) but if you give them anything else, they will need ammo. For example I gave Cait a knee-capping double barrel shotgun that I full upgraded with mods and she uses that every time. I gave Piper a full upgraded plasma-enhanced 10mm.

in looking at companion perks I see as follows:

Companion perks differ from players perks in the sense that they are only activated as long as the companion is following you. Each companion has a unique perk as outlined and described below. A companion’s perk will remain active on the player regardless of the distance between you and your companion. Once the companion is dismissed, the perk will no longer buff your player character.

I have the lone wolf perks, to lose those, dialogue is somewhat shitty with companions along, and romance... no interesting cutscenes. overall too much to bother with.

i dont use companions, i leave them all at their default places, but i had lesbian sex with Magnolia! the scissor thing i guess? oh well. :p

That's cool, I didnt even think you could do something like this or even display the magazines or bobbleheads.

Some of my settlements I took the time to make them look nice and orderly and some of them I just randomly built things and threw them where ever. I'm thinking about putting the time and effort into getting the 100% happiness achievement.

I take Cait along for the one liners she comes up with. Her combat skill isn't great and she seems to get lost a lot.

Just nice to have something funny to listen to while slaying the nasties of the land. :p

Interesting, thanks for the info.

As for companions...they can be annoying but they are an extra gun and I also use them as a pack mule. :p

I like having the companions along. I don't remember if FO3 had this, but they will comment on primary quests from time to time which is cool to see (kind of like in Mass Effect where your two squaddies would have things to say about what's going on.) And yes, having a "pack mule" is a bonus as well :)

I still have Dogmeat as my companion. Has a decent carry weight, attacks targets (and can hold them / stagger them for a few seconds), and acts as a bullet sponge for me :p. That and I still get the advantages of the Lone Wanderer perk, since he's not a human companion.

Hey PC players,

Is there a way to increase the settlement "size" limit so that I may place as many items (walls, floors, etc) down as I like?

Have you gotten rid of clutter like random cars and such? Stuff you didn't place, still counts against you.

I only take companions when forced to. They are still too dumb imo. I like to sneak, they like to run forward and get in my way as I'm shooting. I would like to hear their stories and chit chat but they are still too stupid for me to bother with. I think it was nick, went on a quest with him, I would be looting rooms while he ran ahead and cleared the place we were in. He cleared the entire vault practically on his own. I didn't have to fight anyone till the end.

problem (for me) is they made dogmeat too real, i feel so bad seeing him get hurt :p

week three and the game is nowhere near the end i think, jebus fucking christ, found and did some crazy shit in this game, game is totally fucking awesome, and i still didnt started playing "sims", just the ol gaming quest/sidequest stuff.

It's pretty cool, I prefer the shelves myself. I am hoping someone adds in a mannequin mod or mounting weapons on walls mod like Skyrim had.

Also magazines are really high res. http://i.imgur.com/7axPrjx.jpg

I am pretty sure companions will use ammo for weapons you give them regardless. I gave Preston a Flamer and I wondered why he would use it briefly and then start using his laser musket again. Checked his inventory and he kept running out of ammo for it entirely.

Settlers, on the other hand, appear to only need at least one bullet for unlimited ammo.

The only reason to take a companion is for extra storage space. I've had enemies come up behind me while my "companion" just watches.

Yeah I need a companion to help haul loot. Also nick can hack terminals for you that are out of your skill range.

I got my sanctuary settlement up to 17 people now, and I've had a person kidnapped that I had to rescue, as well as "take out the raiders hide out" tasks. I've seen red rocket get attacked by mutants but no one was there lol. Just turrets. I send all my people to sanctuary. I also give them armor pieces and better weapons and ammo. I got one settler assigned to my guard posts on the bridge with a .50 cal sniper rifle and decked out armor. I'll be pissed if he dies. I've given some of them grenades too, no idea if they can use them or not... Same with stimpacks. Gave all settlers 1 stimpack or 2. It's fun building your settlement up. Buggy yes, but still fun.

You know what, that's probably it. Not sure why that never dawned on me, other than the fact I'm brain dead because we're trying to cram 50 hours of work into 3 days this week due to the holidays. :(

Thanks for the reminder! <runs off to load Cait up with ammo for that Plasma shotgun>

Anyone notice the similar themes between Fallout 4 and the movie Tomorrowland? Just found it pretty amusing.

i am getting ctds everyday now, several, my guess is the ton of corpses, changes in the environment and items scatered all around that is causing it, im not stopping playing though, i cant! :p
