Danny,
It appears that the AMD Phenom II 840 is out of stock at both of the nearby Microcenters. Could you suggest an alternative?
Also, the RAM in your list now shows up as 4GB for $50 rather than 2GB for $40. I think the build only needs 2GB of RAM. Would this work instead? GSkill 2GB...
The OS was in addition to the $300-400 price tag; I was thinking $400-500 and took out $100. I should have mentioned that, sorry.
Thanks, Danny. Your build looks quite good, to be honest. And I'm an Amazon Prime member. :D
Background: My parents computer is over three years old and its exceedingly painful to use when they boot up each morning it takes 5+ minutes, apps that launch in 2 seconds on my PC take a minute on theirs, etc. And its my fault. My dads computer died and he needed a new one immediately...
I have posted twice on [H]ardforum for advice on PC builds, and both times got excellent advice. I know next to nothing about Macs, but my girlfriend managed to break her MacBook Pro display, and it's kinda my fault, so I have to help her fix it. You see, I was at my desktop working, and I...
Thanks for this article. I just got the auto-notify from Newegg and bought it. What swung me on it was actually the write-up on the noise (or lack thereof) and power consumption. It being a quiet card was the most important factor for me.
Last week I built a PC for a friend with a lot of help from people at [H]ardforum. Here is the build:

When I gave him the PC a week ago, it was working great. Windows cold boot-up was ~30 seconds, and shutdown was ~3 seconds. All...
Thanks again, Danny. I was also surprised at how fast the deal went. I clicked on it at one point tonight and not even 90 minutes later it was gone. But hopefully the build will only end being $5 more anyway. I figured I would check out the prices of the components at Microcenter to see if...
Thank so much for the build, Danny. It looks great. One problem. The PSU/HDD combo deal is no longer good. :( Can you or someone else suggest and alternative PSU and HDD? Also, my friend just informed me he had a 1 TB external drive and therefore only needs a 500 GB hard drive. Thanks again.
Hi.
Several months ago I put up a post for a build for a friend of mine, but unfortunately he had to put off getting a new PC for reasons beyond his control. But now he has to put one together, and quickly, so I'm going to repost a slightly modified version.
1) What will you be doing with...
Thanks for the quick reply, Danny. I believe you helped me on my own build. This looks like a great build for him and a huge upgrade.
A few quick questions.
1) You write "Since WoW is involved, he's better off building his own." Why exactly is that? I ask for a bit of elaboration because...
A friend of mine just called me asking for advice on getting a new PC. His "what are you doing with this PC?" and budget are very similar to this other build below, http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1517150, but with some key differences. BTW, I did one of these threads back in October for...
To follow-up on Enginurd's comment, you might also want to consider return policies and their time limits. If you get a component with a three-month return policy for defective merch, and you have it for a month or two or three before you put your computer together, you might not be able to...
This probably won't be of much help as you're in CT and there is no Micro Center in CT, but they sell your CPU for $200. Unfortunately, it's in-store pick-up only.
i7 920 at Micro Center And from what I read they only sell the D0 stepping. Mine was.
Not sure exactly where you live in CT...
I just ordered the parts for my new system but the monitors I'm really on the fence about. They've given me the most trouble and I've spent the most time researching them. Actually, researching displays is how I found [Hard] Forum. However, I just went to the local Micro Center and actually...
Thanks for the input, everyone. I appreciate it.
Enginurd, I've read a lot of your posts and seen pics of your set-up; it's pretty sweet.
I know I could have gone for a cheaper system. I'm working on a 2+ year-old laptop so the entire purchase is already unnecessary, if I were to use...
