The Nintendo Switch 2 Thread

The problem with BotW 2 is that even if it launches with a new Switch, it will be a cross platform release calibrated to the woefully outdated Switch. This was the case with Twilight Princess (Gamecube/Wii), and BotW itself (WiiU/Switch). So it really doesn’t matter.

I do think OLED is excellent tech, and god forbid my son dumps my switch in the toilet, I’m all over an OLED replacement. Barring that, we’re in for a bit of a wait.

But it is nice to see Nintendo embracing the best display tech on the market and obviously OLED is really taking off now, which is good because LED is atrocious. We should expect an OLED on the next portable they make, whenever that is.

I’ve been following Nintendo since 1986. They always deliver something awesome eventually, but you might find yourself getting old in between major launches!!!

I miss the Nintendo of 1986. Back when their systems actually had comparable horsepower to the competition and they made more than one franchise game per system.

I'd love to know the overall % of Switch usage on a toilet. I bet it's double digits.

I have learned recently, looks like no Switch 2 this year, most likely early next year (2022). Possible that they get it out for Xmas, but all signs right now point to "no." Remember the original Switch launched in March of 2017. Given what we have just seen launched with the new OLED screen unit, it is going to be the holdover through the Xmas buying season. A bunch of leakers thought that the NV "Lovelace" architecture was a new desktop part before Hoppper, but from my understanding, Lovelace is actually the Switch 2's new CPU/GPU architecture.
Yeah, one of the initial thought paths to what you're saying is the Lovelace CPU/GPU SOC meant for next gen didn't get into this Switch OLED version. This is because Nintendo wanted to produce this new Switch en masse and due to concerns with the semi-conductor and chip shortage in SE Asia they didn't think nVIDIA could provide enough SOC chips of Lovelace to be able to produce a Switch Pro (with new said SOC) this year. They didn't want to fall into the trap Microsoft and Sony did with XSX and PS5 where sure they got the console out but they aren't producing enough to satisfy demand past the bot-wielding scalpers who turned the launches of both (and continuing restocks) into such a mess. So based on that thought path it's like Nintendo wanted to bring out a new console but they wanted to be able to produce enough to keep scalpers away. Finally, based on how many people online (especially current Switch owners) have said they won't purchase the OLED edition scalpers if they buy this one en masse are going to have a hard time selling it on eBay/StockX/Amazon 3rd party vendor network. Thanks and until next time I am out!

As stupid as it is, I'm pretty sure the OLED Switch is also going to turn into a scalper-fighting nightmare for anyone who legitimately wants one. I know it doesn't make any logical sense, but mark my words, it's going to happen.

It very well still could. But again, many current Switch owners online are saying they won't budge for the OLED edition. That takes a lot of people right out of the scalper's customer pool right there. Sure, there will be some current Switch owners getting the OLED edition but there will likely be many more new owners winding up to get this than the current install base. So to that, this will become more of a problem for the new to Switch owners right away if scalpers jump at it. Well, we'll certainly find out in (at time of writing this) 1 hour and 9 minutes. Out!

You can scalp anything if you buy up all the supply. Look at De Beers.

IIRC both the master system and the TG-16 were better on the hardware side than the NES. The SNES was better than the Genesis but both got crushed by the NeoGeo and other systems. I think Nintendo's only one hardware "performance" moment was the 64 which didn't turn out so well for them.
Who the hell doesn't use their phone or switch on the toilet?!?!??? Honestly don't expect a switch 2 til BotW2. There is no reason to release a new switch while the current one is still selling well.
It's joy!
Thats the only reason i have an iPad. You are missing out.
Same.

I'm pretty sure they went balls deep with their Gamecube hardware (though its proprietary drive hurt them). And they also basically recycled the hardware for the Wii. Still, I remember the Gamecube being a powerhouse and going toe to toe with the OG Xbox and PS2.

Well it did have ati graphics, iirc.

Gamecube I believe actually was more powerful than PS2 on the GPU side but I think it had more to do with the timing of when it was released in the cycle (it was later in that console gen) than a real attempt to outgun the competition. I can't remember if XBOX was faster or slower than Gamecube.

Gamecube was a great system of course with a great catalog of classic games. It just was not a huge seller.

The Gamecube is still my favorite console of all time even though I own the least amount of games for it. All of the games I've played on it are 10/10 on the non-journalist scale for me.

True, although the difference in horsepower between the Master System and NES wasn't that big and the PC-Engine/TG16 was a full generation past the NES. Especially in the US. Nintendo always used to at least have competitive hardware. It might not have been the best, but it wasn't a full generation behind at launch. The N64 was the beginning of Nintendo getting "quirky" though. From the cartridge format to the wonky controller, I see that as a sea change moment. The Gamecube continued with that. Powerful AF in some ways, but lacking in others, and still with the wonky controls.

TBH I think the Steam Deck is going to end up sharing a similar fate of the Steam controller, Steam link, and Steam box. With an added failson of the fate of all these portable gaming PCs and every portable company that took on Nintendo and got their lunch kicked. It's the perfect cluster fuck of a platform idea that constantly fails, a company that has a miserable track record of hardware and hardware support, taking on a juggernaut on their home turn.

Don't agree. Everything up until the Deck had the writing on the wall if you know the market, this doesn't.

I've also had quite a bit of fun with steam link. If they ever made a 4k capable version I'd still be using one.

Instead I'm using the Steam Link App on my Nvidia shield, can stream 4k60 smooth enough to not notice any difference over my 1GB hardwire network.

I think this does as well. The history here is funny but it's littered with corpses of things like Sega GameGear/Nomad, TG-16 mini, various Sony attempts, Bandai, Nokia, Atari and all sorts of others that put out devices that were technically superior to Nintendo's (in some cases basically the full home console itself) and then crashed and burned because the combination of form factor/battery life didn't make them that appealing as mobiles. The X86 space has had some solid attempts as well even from companies like Razer that just didn't take off and were bigger flops than the portable consoles. It's the Afghanistan of gaming, everyone shows up with something bigger and better and then it just burns.

Wanna bet money?

I don't e-gamble but we will see how this pans out.* I should clarify I want this to work out. It's my kind of device as I travel a fair bit for work and I take the subway to work. This is my sort of thing. The thing is though I've just seen too many crash and burns from console makers in the portable space that knew what they were doing, a series of utter flops in the PC side of things from companies that looked to know what you are doing (I mean, say what you will about Razer but they do know what they are doing), and Valves track record makes me gun shy on their devices. No matter how much I want this to be good it just sort of seems like the perfect trifecta to be the next amazing thing that then goes the way of the dodo in two years.

Heck I still keep a Vita around as they make amazing little emulation boxes.

*This would be some odd two year long running bet after it's release to see what happened. It's interesting. I'm still sort of waiting on an ARM device pushing linux and someone with a proven hardware track record to jump in. I think that will happen at some point.

The NeoGeo was not realy a console like the Snes or Genesis, The console was pretty expensive and the games cost a lot like 3-4 times what the other systems games cost
Ja, the AES was a home version of the MVS arcade hardware, which is why it and the games were so expensive. I always wanted one, myself.

I've known several Neo Geo owners as an adult, but when I was a kid I didn't know anybody with one. The system was $650 and the games were $200 each. They were arcade perfect, but they were also all SNK games. You had to be super into their (many, many) fighting games or Metal Slug to justify buying a system like that for one developer. If Capcom made a Neo Geo, I probably would have found a way to buy one, though.

NeoGeo was for kids whose parents had more money than brains.

In addition to being SNK-only console, it was also just a massive-overclocked Genesis, with more onscreen colors.

The SNES actually advanced the art (with real-time transparency, and Wavetable sound)

The SNES was a lot better prepareed to combat the PS1 than the Neo Geo was.

Essentially, for sprites however, the video chip was superior. Justify the $450 price difference over the sega... hell naw

Almost everything back then used the ubiquitous Z68000.

The video chip in the AES was far superior to the Genesis. It's like comparing a 1050 Ti to a 3080. For 1990 I can definitely see the video chip contributing to the large price difference.

But a few years later Nintendo is bundling a 3d accelerator with it's cartridges. No way it cost that much to make.

IMO the one thing it has going for it, which should ensure it doesn't quickly and completely sink: games don't have to be specifically ported to it. Any PC game on Steam, will boot on a Steam Deck. Because of that, its success will be based on a fairly pure parameter of "Do people want it or not".

Most indy games should run fine, if not great. So, there won't be any wait, to play a lot of games like that.

However, its gonna be a gigantic YMMV for games with heavier graphics engines.

And tons of games will have issues with on screen text and UI readability.

Buuuut, there is plenty of opportunity for PC devs to validate a graphics settings profile, specifically meant for play on a Steam Deck. And that sort of thing should be fairly trivial, in terms of development time. Along with that, offering UI and on screen text size/format, for Steam Deck.

I agree with the statements of Blackstone and Armenius about the Neo Geo. It was way too expensive for its time and it wasn't marketed towards kids. It was more marketed towards college graduates (21-26 year old range) who wanted the exact arcade experience of SNK and had the money to afford it. The issue was? Many 21-26 year olds still couldn't afford it. Adding to that, there were so many MVS arcade machines for Neo Geo everywhere that they didn't need to spend $500 for a console and $150 for games. They just pumped quarters into the nearest MVS machines and played that way. Got some kids hooked on the MVS too. Out!

This isn't nearly true at all. It was, it was in all the gaming magazines and everything. It also lasted, hell it's still around! That's impressive. What killed it was when arcades flooded you could buy MVS carts for a fraction of an AVS costed. People who care about gaming NEVER got into MAME or any of that horseshit. They scooped up boards from closed arcades on the cheap, having a MAME is sort of screaming "I have a small dick and like my meat well done" on a busy street corner. So an AVS Metal Slug has price inflated to over a grand now, but it has a box and art. An MVS version is a fraction of that, and you can grab an MVS board that holds four carts and lets you switch games at the menu for less than an AVS costs. You can also "consolize" an MVS board via SuperGun (this is an easy project with a soldering iron and some PCBs and a JAMMA harness) and plug the damn thing straight into a TV over HDMI.

This also is not nearly true. It had a better VDP and sound proc as well. In addition one of the reasons it was so pricey was they didn't cheap out on their carts, they went hog wild.

Also Nintendo is why the Playstation exists. Nintendo saw the Sega CD and went to build their own add-on with Sony. They backed the fuck out and screwed Sony. Sony kept what they had and turned it into the Playstation and we all know how that ended.

Anyways, we should all get off our lawns. But I am buying the OLED switch for the little lady. Also it's more than an OLED, better speakers and some other things and she plays it in bed or in the bath so it's a good thing for her.
