(current build on second page)

Bare with me on the formatting, please; my house fire destroyed my equipment and I am posting this on my cell phone. Thank you all for your help.

1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
PC gaming at 4k 60fps+ escape from Tarkov seems the most demanding. Will get vr gear later if it's viable for such high resolutions. I have over 400 games on steam ranging through all demand types. I may also want to program, learn linux, and work with unreal engine 4 if hobby time permits. I need a 4k bluray player and the necessary hardware to support it. I am an audiophile, will need gear for that. Decoding and conversion of DVD and bluray to mkv format unless you know of a better format for compressed video.

2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
Including the 2080 cards on the way. Try to keep whatever you submit between 4 and 7000 usd not including shipping. Sorry for the large range but I have no idea how much rig I need to get what I'm asking for functionality wise.
I do not want to overkill everything more than I already am with 2 of these cards I just want to make sure I'm not bottle necking the 2080s. Think bang for buck here. I probably don't need an Intel thread ripper for example or 2000 dollar monitors. Try to keep the tower and its parts under 5000 dollars, factoring in the 2080 cards on the way. Monitors under 1000 total. Task adequate external devices. So let's say try to keep it under 7k taxes and shipping not included. I think the cards were about 2400 total. Also if you want to recommend a good office chair and monitor mounts let me know. I may or may not need a replacement desk. They are removing asbestos from my house. Do not factor in the chair, desk, or mounts in the price. If you want to hunt these down for me try to keep the total around 500 not including tax. Insurance will cover a good amount of this build. Don't be afraid to go over if you need to.

3) Which country do you live in? If the U.S, please tell us the state and city if possible.
Colorado Springs Colorado USA

4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. The word "Everything" is not a valid answer. Please list out all the parts you'll need.

The 2080 ti cards are reference cards from the nvidia online store. Please note I do not want wireless gear

Two 4k monitors, one for gaming, one for viewing the 4k blueray content, and assorted things like internet, teamspeak, and notepad++. I would like the same basic features like HDR and VESA mounts. I understand smaller is better for gaming because you don't have to move your head. I had to with my old 28 inch. I want to get the full benefit of the 4k resolution though so this is an optional thing. Monitors do not have to be same size or brand. I want minimal input lag with the gaming monitor. The other one can be larger but I do not desire anything above 40 inches for the second display. Is there an optimal size for a gaming monitor?

If you can think of a better keyboard than the corsair strafe rgb I think it was called, let me know, otherwise I need that.

Mouse equivalent or better than steelseries r300 I think it was called. Sorry, fire contained asbestos and I can't go in to identify my old gear.

Nice big mousepad for gaming, easily maintainable

OS SSD
gaming SSD for games that have a practical benefit, such as multiplayer loading times, otherwise I care very little about loading times and will use mechanical storage for that.
at least 4TB mechanical storage for remaining games and software
Previous computer had approximately 6 TB storage total. However I want enough storage to accommodate my entire steam library and a backup image. Comcast has that lovely 1tb monthly cap I can't to avoid in the event of another disaster. (I backed up my data before they told me the was asbestos on an external so I'm good on that. I would still like an internal backup though too. is there a stream library size calculator somewhere?
Let's just assume that I need maybe 12 TB total storage as I backup my physical video collection to disc in mkv format. Probably won't do this with the 4k bluray though.

I had a steam controller but I don't like that so much, what is better, ps4 or xbox controller, is there a better steam controller? I got the original from the testing phase with the two pads. Need suggestions.

I heard there is a magnetic mic I can buy to convert high quality headphones into a headset. If sennheiser makes a good headset for audiophiles I'll take that instead. If not I will need the headset attachment or a cheap standing mic for that.

I don't use speakers, however I owned them because of a volume dial that came with them. I have heard there is a pro alternative for this for pc's with added functionality so you can skip the speakers. I do not want a sound card, motherboard audio has caught up I've noticed.

4k bluray player internal, will not write, however will be using to rip video *yes legally, don't ask*

CPU that supports 4k player, latest gen Intel I hear is necessary. Single core speed is priority. I will never overclock my hardware unless the factory does. I never need to with this kind of hardware. 8 core or 4 core? What ever you guys think is best.

Sufficient modular PSU for all this gear, fans, maybe 8 drives max. I want to try and avoid ghetto cable splitters and have sufficiently long cables for everything.

Maybe a digital fan controller and monitor thingy that fits in an optical drive slot?

System will be air cooled. I will need necessary gear for that.

Case: tooless if possible, thumbscrews for everyone! I like those big mid tower cases where the psu is separated from the rest of the gear but these are for custom water cooled builds. I don't think I need a case that large but my corsair vengeance c70 didn't accommodate my cables well enough for 2 hdd cages. It also didn't have a good place for my SSDs which had to be taped to the side. I want a case that provides ample space for my hands, cables, storage, good airflow, fancy color lights and windows not neccessary. I would like carry handles or some kind of accessory to perform that function. Preferably the latter if the case look is massively impacted by the handles. Fans should be as large as possible for noise reduction purposes but this is not essential. Food or drink may be near by due to inconsiderate roommates. if possible find a case without top of case fans, or recommend waterproof cover. Fast USB ports. I wish you could get custom length cables for everything, including sata easily or cheaply but it doesn't seem to justify the price. I like black, dark blue, military colors or the less reflective and gaudy variety of chrome. Not a priority though, just try not to go with white or pink please lol.

32 GB ram should theoretically be sufficient. Oddly 16 is pushing it for some Tarkov maps.

Motherboard with onboard sound, fastest USB possible. I don't need USB that powers gear though, gets annoying turning off the computer and my keyboard is still lit up.

One rtx sli bridge of appropriate size to maximize airflow between cards. Nvidia won't let me order one, I will wait if I have to but if you can find one please let me know.

Not a computer part but I need a replacement office chair *not a gimmick gaming chair* suitable for long gaming sessions and work at home. (if you want to tackle this for me please limit chair price to 500 dollars or less.

Extra cables and thumbscrews please.
5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model.
2 nvidia rtx 2080 ti founders editions in SLI

6) Will you be overclocking?
No

7) What is the max resolution of your monitor? What size is it?
3840x2160 need two, need to be able to install own mounts

8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?
No idea when cards will ship, but i need the rest of the system now. I have no computer. ETA on cards was estimated to be 10/22 but they did say that was a guess during order process.

9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Crossfire or SLI support? eSATA? Onboard video (as a backup or main GPU)? etc.
Good onboard sound, fastest USB possible, ample room for cards and a long sli bridge for airflow, plenty of fan support unless you can recommend a optical drive slot fan controller and monitoring system. Functionality over flash, high lifespan. If CPU supports video I need a port to connect a monitor or a dirt cheap display only video card instead if the computer ships before the video cards do. eSATA is not necessary but if it is faster for backup purposes I'd like a port. Enough USB for keyboard mouse external hard drive, front or top case USB support. Again please at least USB 3.0, I hate moving files to flash drives or externals taking hours.

10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? If yes, what OS? Is it 32bit or 64bit?
Windows 10 home premium 64bit, might upgrade to pro, I have that if Microsoft can recover my license. If not i will buy pro. Do not factor into price.

Desk will be reused, unless you can find a light large computer desk that is height adjusting and a good price. Try for one that I can set the monitors mousepad keyboard and tower on please. It is possible the fire crew will throw out the desk I have.

Thanks for your time everyone, I'm sorry if things are repeated, bad grammar, or unnecessarily formatted. Typing this and keeping track of everything is very hard on my phone.

I will keep an eye on things and try to use the library computers to respond. I will be transitioning to a new home so it may take some time to reply. I will try to check at least once a day.

I'm not going to wade into this much, but:

Think bang for buck here

I think it's fair to say you've violated that axiom just about as hard as you can with your GPU purchases. The 2080 Ti is horrible bang-for-buck, SLI is pretty bad too, and you've gotten both.

Ignore SinisterDei and others that would infect you with their fear of being [H]ard.

HardOCP demands that you show up to fight and that you are expected to kick ass and take names.

For what you have in mind, at this current moment in time, there are too many overly sensitive people that are adversely affected by the price of the RTX 2080 ti. They get triggered and you're only going to end up with biased and tainted advice, if you can even call it that.
Lot of dudes want the card but do not support a life-style that allows them to save and plan ahead in order to obtain this god-like card. They are always behind the curve. These forums are littered with them.

I bought the RTX 2080 ti this morning and I've been seriously enjoying myself all day.

Dude, your build sounds awesome. is it practical or cheap or sane? Hell no but that's the point. People don't get it. We do.

The people that tell you this is too much, you don't need that, etc etc are giving you advice from a empty pocket filled with lint and cold fingers.

You only live once my man. As long as you can feed yourself, support the people around you in way that is expected of you then go for it. As long as what you want to do isn't hurting you or your surroundings.

If I listened to the people around me, I wouldn't have a 2080 ti, I wouldn't have a Hayabusa that goes 200mph, I wouldn't have 32GB of ram, a 49" KS8000, a $2,000 Herman Miller computer chair, I wouldn't have shit. I would be miserable just like them.

I would like to see pictures once this beast is built.

Good luck!

Well, feel free to ignore me if you like, obviously. I'm not exactly running a bargain-basement PC built using advice I got from an empty pocket of lint and coldness though, so I resent that a tiny bit.

Regardless, the only thrust of my comment was the incongruous nature of the request; it's like if you were building a car and went ahead and bought the engine of a Ferrari, but then asked for build advice with the request that you "think family sedan" when recommending the rest of the components.

I've got no problem with someone going off the deep end and dropping cash; it's theirs to do with whatever they like, obviously. But it *is* internally inconsistent to be completely extravagant with your GPUs and then focus on 'value for dollar' for the rest of the build.

*shrug* I've always splurged on GPUs and built around them. I guess I'm doing it wrong but I've always put gaming first for my builds. I'll live with a $20 case and featureless $80 mobo and upgrade those later.

You misunderstand perhaps. By bang for buck, I mean build a Ferrari around my Ferrari engine, not an aircraft carrier. Benchmarks indicate gta v for example barely hits 60 with one card and I want a PC that will go as far above that as 2 cards will get me. If I wanted overkill I would have bought 4. I don't need 2000 dollar Intel 32 core CPU, i need whatever the fastest standard for gaming is for example. In short, bang for buck means match the cards to a computer. Hell, the insurance is going to pay for my old machine with two 1080s in it so why not?

I'm pretty [H]ard man. My house burned my equipment and I spent hours hammering out this thread on my android. I made a new account because you reset passwords and my email is so old I couldn't salvage my old one, so I added a 01 to the end of my screen name and got posting.

I say if I want to spend a few paychecks on a 5-10 year computer why not? I made the early leap to 4k. I even regretted it a bit. But I saw the quality of that image. Going from 1080 to 2160 was like going from a used VHS straight to bluray and now I can never go back!

Now i will reliably go above 60 fps in everything! My mom died of cancer and my room burned to cinders. I vacuumed up that poison before they told me: oops this house does have asbestos, your computer and possibly your lungs are toast. Means i might be dead in ten years.

Screw one 1080ti on a 1080p! I want to see Mortal Kombat X hit 120 on my 75 inch 4K HDR QLED, while backing up my data! I want to bask in the glory of doom eternal while I watch season 2 of one punch man simultaneously! Play tarkov with zero input lag, and have the raid map on the other monitor with my list of objectives in notepad. Enjoy some gen 1 raytraced awesomeness while watching porn SO detailed I can see those capillaries pulsate and post in the comments section that the actress needs to wipe better! There will be pictures, maybe even video! (Of the computer, not the porn.)

I can afford it, I just need someone to throw a list together while the cleaners throw my stuff in a biohazard crate and I repair and move into my mom's old carcinogen free house. Now let's do this! I want those front case fans pushing air like this!

Update: parts on order from local store due to time. Price for the remaining parts was about 2800 if I remember correctly. However I still need the following: monitors, mousepad, 4k bluray drive, keyboard and mouse, and CPU graduation for a six core 3.7 ghz 7th generation Intel.

Okay, here is what the store suggested only the case wasn't in stock so I haven't payed them yet, thank god because i think they picked the wrong mobo.

Parts list:
Gigabyte Z370 Aorus Gaming 5 (second video slot sucks it down to 8x, not acceptable if i can remember correctly. need the full 16x on both cards, I let them know. I do like the idea of a built in m.2 but it seems to pull from the PCIe performance)
Intel i7-8700k (slightly concerned about adaquacy here, any suggestions?)
Cooler Master 240mm Liquid Cooler
250GB Samsung m.2 SSD
1TB 2.5” Samsung SSD
4 x 8GB DDR4 3000Mhz GSkill Ripjaws (quad channel FTW)
Corsair 750D (asked for the airflow version, if they ordered the wrong one I dont mind, both look fine.)
2 x 4TB 3.5” Seagate Barracuda (same as WD blacks right? seagate never let me down when I owned them)
1300w EVGA Gold

I have a three slot sli bridge on order, nvidia finally opened that back up. So I will need a board that will give me what I want with the 3 slot bridge. 4 slot seemed overkill.
I need a 4k bluray player, should be good for ripping the blurays too. I want to back up my movie collection, pretty badwakeup call after the fire.
I need suggestions on the 4k monitors. I need HDR at a decent gaming size. and a larger one with HDR for movie viewing and other random tasks as listed in the original post. I will re write the original post for clarity and accuracy. I just want to make sure everything is adequate before I pull the trigger. The case I'm dead set on, love it.

suggestions? cards arrive monday, ordered the bridge today so I'll probably get it wednesday.

Cards have arrived! Now to wait and see if my case has shipped to the store yet... bridge is on the way hopefully, at least the order went through smoothly

Also man, hold off ... the z390 just launced today .... get a new z390 board an the 9900K if you can.

Okay looks like the rest of the parts should come in today. I hope they didn't order the board online they said they had it in stock. That would be on them. Only reason I'm not sourcing the parts myself is the living situation. Thanks for the note there Duo. I asked PC brokers to see if they could source me one such board. you have any recommendations? Their concern with going beyond z370 is stability, thoughts?

I just need a board that supports a 3 slot sli bridge now. The 390s support dual x16 bandwidth? Looks like everything else is coming together. Case is in, and memory should arrive today.

Called the store, they said they haven't pulled the trigger on these boards yet, they are doing some research themselves. I'll have to pay them in advance so I need to get the parts list down to a T here. I'd really appreciate the help.

from what I can tell on asus' site it will be 16x/16x and are cpu direct. the others have limits and are through the pch.

It very much should be x8/x8 on 1151; the CPU doesn't have the pins for more PCIe lanes ;).

[which is a loose argument, but no 115x-socketed CPU has run x16/x16; at best, a PCIe switch may be attached to the board allowing for 2x16 connections to the switch and bidirectional x16 to each card, but it's still just 16 lanes to the CPU]

ah yeah you are right. chip only has 16 lanes too. I personally haven't touch those yet so was going by what, which seems to be confusing, was on the website.

I wouldn't rely on Newegg's specs tab, but they do have it listed as I would expect.

In any case, while the limitation to running these cards in x8/x8 might be measurable- as in it might exceed sampling error- it's not likely to be deterministic in actual gameplay.

I went to the asus site to check. there is a decrease at 8x/8x with these but only noticeable if you are benchmarking(saw a yt vid about it).

Only current gen chipsets that have CPUs that support dual x16 3.0 gpu badwidth are Intel's X299 and AMD's X399.

Edit: I would think the 8700k and 8900k would still be the best choice for gaming, but depending on the situation your results could vary.

The losses from x8 badwidth are still relatively low even with the 2080ti. Here is a link to an article that looks into this.

In some situations you will see no performance hit, but the worst they saw was a 15% performance hit which is significant.

Would you be interested in helping us with some benchmarks on those cards?

I took a look, apparently one game dropped 16% without 16/16 I'm unconcerned really. The only purpose of the build is to run everything as far above 60 as I can get it to reduce input lag. The parts from the store are here pictures incoming gotta eat.

I will get the board I linked then

no pointy in getting a switch if the cpu lanes will bring it down to 8/8 anyway.

They gave me the caviar blacks I requested so no seagate, they also gave me an m.2 ssd.

Would you be interested in helping us with some benchmarks on those cards?

I will benchmark anything you ask me to without hesitation.

Looks like all that's left for me to get is a 4k bluray drive and 2 monitors. One small gaming one so I dont have to move my head to see the entire screen at my desk. and a second larger one for secondary tasks and movie viewing. both 4k, both HDR. Suggestions?

I will eat then post pictures.

edit, what size sli bridge do I need with this build, 3 slot or four slot?

again board is this one: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813119150#

You rock man. Let me know when you get everything running. I am subscribed to this thread so just keep updating us here and I'll respond.

sorry I couldn't make it easier for ya'll, its been a real challenge givin the moving situation. more pics in about 15 minutes here.

System minus arctic silver 5, sli bridge, 4k bluray player, i9 9900k and z390 board. will unbox some stuff, and begin install of parts.

This case is so glorious I even have room to install the closed loop cooler and let the thing dangle. might not be a good idea so I wont but the room and cable management in this beast is going to be glorious. board and processor are on order. All that remains now are the monitors and the thermal compound if the cooler doesn't have it. Not too concerned about compound, even best buy has arctic silver 5 for some reason.

the cooler has TIM pre-applied and as5 might get you 2-4c off. you decide if its worth it to change.

Current state of the build attached.

SLI bridge was the correct size (YAY!)
When the Intel D20(HA!) gets here I will install the cooler master maybe pick up some AS5 at the store and we will be in business.
M.2 is installed in the upper m.2 slot
for reference the motherboard is an ASUS ROG z390 XI Maximus Hero.

Questions: as far as my research indicates I can have the M.2 in the top slot and it will have its own PCIE lanes and it wont take from the card's lanes. Is this true or do I need to move the m.2 to the second slot in the south bridge?

Should I have the cooler master in push or pull? it will be mounted on the top.

has the 4k bluray drive market expanded or is there still only one brand available?

I still need suggestions on what monitors and VESA mounts to buy. one for 4k gaming, one for 4k viewing. 16x9 3840x2160 preferred. Not fond of curved setups

recommendations on an office chair? I will not be buying one of those ugly ass gaming chairs.

when will then be now?

far as I can tell my i9900k should get released on the 19th last I checked, any word as to the truth of this claim/estimate? the extra time will give me more monitor shopping time.

MX-4 is better than AS5

Any optical drives these days are pointless. Save your money. Don't waste it. Playing Blurays on a PC is a PITA for the right drivers/software and crap. (Last I checked)

Just stream your 4K content. Its far cheaper.

Just stream your 4K content. Its far cheaper.

The only issue I have with that is I already have an extensive library of blyrays and the family has been picking up 4k blurays on their own. So I want to digitize my collection and be able to play the 4k content they have on disk. The one thing I have a solid handle on is the playback.

I use AnyDVD HD, MPC via the k-lite codec pack, and clone DVD HD to play/rip my films to .MKV. 4k is probably too big, but I want to be able to digitize my entire library for easier storage and recovery. The family pays for the streaming services, I don't, and there is often a gap in selection. For example Crunchy Roll will rarely have the anime I want. Don't get me wrong I enjoy streaming services. but licensing makes it a pain to find what I want. If you have thoughts on that let me know.

Ah, for that purpose then it's worth it. Carry on.

Shit, now that I have a NAS, I should start digitizing what I have too...

Of course, trying to do 4k Dolby Vision/Atmos is going to be a pain if it's even possible.

In any case, build is looking good!

I would use headphones so I don't care about surround loss, is HDR something I need to encode into a specific format? Anything better than mkv for a film format?

Okay, today or tomorrow I will be gathering the final components, have a chair on order.

Lets discuss this benchmarking people are asking for. I have 3dmark but other than that just an assortment of steam games and escape from tarkov. If you guys have any extra licenses for benchmarks (if necessary) send them my way. As I said I am willing to run any benchmark necessary but paying for it on the other hand is another story. Not so sure I want to dump $500 on benchmark software I don't own. Upgrades for 3d mark I plan on getting anyway.

Full build list incoming.

These "benchmarks" are DC projects that utilize GPUs. The [H]ard BOINC team would like to know how quickly it can do some of these projects to compare them to older GPUs. Mostly to determine if they're worth buying them or sticking with the older gen stuff for now.

Good thing about running these things is, after you join the team on each project, you'll be contributing points towards our competitions so its a 2 for 1 deal as well.

I'll wait till you get everything stable and running then walk you through each project I'd like numbers for. Thanks for doing this by the way.

Man, I wish I could have had you take a look at the Corsair Obsidian 500d Premium ... absolutely incredible case for the money.

Are we talking about folding at home here, or some proprietary thing ya'll do?? Assuming everything POSTs fine I should be up and installing windows within the hour of getting my i9 in the mail. I will overclock if walked through it. I can *technically* afford another computer, but I would like to avoid frying my gear.

It was all a time thing. I almost built this thing without the new motherboard and CPU mentioned. I was hours away from an inferior system.

I can take one of the mechanical drives out now, or the 1 TB SSD and start transferring my steam library onto it. This does include farcry 5 and some other recent benchmark games as well. I can do this through my laptop and a hard drive dock I bought to recover my data from the house fire. Anything you guys want me to grab in advance let me know.

Great day today, watching you guys bypass nvidia's NDA garbage, and seeing Carmack get his money from Zenimax. Bought the pursuit ergonomic chair from uplift I saw in the site reviews here. I have scoliosis and mild CP so this chair hopefully should help with some posture issues I've been having without having to fork over 2 grand for something to sit on.
