Looking for a bit of advice...

I just started looking for a new GPU and am surprised to find that the models I want are in such short supply. Obviously, crypto mining has gobbled up all the cards in this model range.

Is there an end in sight for the shortage? Is the current un-availability an anomaly or can I expect to have to set up a ton of alerts for the next few months?

Any reasonable strategies for finding an EVGA vid card?

Thanks!

C

No end in sight, just keep looking and setup some alerts on nowinstock.net.

I was able to sell a new 1080 Ti, well, open box from Microcenter that was $699 a few weeks ago. Put it up for $1,299 to see what would happened and got a buyer only, it's 20 out and iced up everywhere. Hopefully he doesn't change his mind.

A lot guys have them listed for $1500 all the way up to $3000 for 1080 ti's

Starting to think I could get more .......

Better take the $1300 dollars.

I sold mine for $2000.

I mean, from some amazon sellers, you can buy them for $999 right now. If you can get that kinda money, you could double up fast.

I bought a vega 64 open box at microcenter last week. Mined on it for a week (made $50), sold it on ebay for $175 more than it cost me, used that money to buy an open box 1080 ti for $675 at micro center. rinse, repeat.

$3K? For a 1080Ti?

You could get a Titan V for that much and it'd be new and twice as fast.

Just get a Titan Xp at Nvidia for a little over $1100. Makes me wonder about some folks.

Which is good advice at this point. I've been building PCs for 25 years now. And it's always been kind of depressing how the stuff depreciates but holly moly. I almost want to sell my sig rig at cost right now. And should and will regret it because I didn't.

It is like you could buy a Titan Xp for ~$1150 today (Starwars version) and turn around tomorrow and sell it for $2500 and someone would buy it . This is getting so ridiculous and to me is indicating people who have very little experience (don't want to say no clue) are trying to get into mining and are thrashing about.

I read the reviews on Newegg dealing with the Vega FE version about driver issues etc. Really very minor roadblocks in reality to get these cards pumping astonishing numbers with mining but obviously the people are buying them without much research at all.

So we are at a state of massive influx of inexperience folks buying hardware at utter ridiculous prices when the same item or better item could be bought. Chaos!

I bought 2 Star Wars "Galactic Empire" Titan Xp's this morning, $1138 each. No idea why someone would buy a 1080 Ti for $1200
lol :ROFLMAO:. Yep me either.

I am contemplating buying two myself :D. I would need to buy a new motherboard for the 6700K with more slots to put the 1080Ti and two Titan Xp's. Tomorrow I am going to be wiring up a 240v/120v box with breakers and outlets for 9600w more available power - will this ever end???

Time to get rid of the stove and dryer. Priorities in place.

I have a Z170 board for ya, but it'll cost you $1,100 dollars. :joyful:

I saw a titan X on craigslist for a little north of $1000. Didn't think it was faster than a 1080ti though so ignored it. It's gone now :(

titan x (non p) shows roughly the same (slightly less) processing power than a 1080ti. Why should I buy those up?

So...... what is up with folks looking for their once a year, or two, three or five year GPU upgrade...... right in the middle of a shortage?

Pascal has been out since 2016, and Volta is right around the corner...

For me, it was just about the most incredible bad-timing. I haven't really gamed much (other than StarCraft II) since the days of my Voodoo cards. One of my children graduated college in May, and my other child is now away at college. So, with an empty nest, I thought I'd treat myself to a new video card and step back into a little gaming. Instead, I stepped into something else.

They will be the first to dump if the price of btc gets anywhere close to 10k again.

I hope so, that was sorta the attitude last time though, and it didn't really happen. I mean, sure we saw cards on the market again.., but gone are the days I could get an rx 480 for < $200. (If I remember correct I bought some for like $140 ea. last year)

It's not that simple. BTC is not practical to mine with consumer GPUs, and hasn't been for years. There are some mining pools that pay in BTC, like NiceHash, but you're actually mining other types of coins for other people, and getting paid in BTC.

In terms of the GPU market, Ethereum is a much better bellwether, since you have to mine it with GPUs, and it's the most well established after BTC. If it goes back down under maybe $800, I bet you see a lot of folks losing interest.

Ethereum is moving towards POS. But yeah, I agree with you.

You can be sure that the graphics card market will be just as much if not more of a wasteland than it is now when Volta launches.

Perhaps you would consider console gaming? :D

The crazy part is even using nowinstock.net to track in stock cards isn't guaranteed anymore either. Occasionally a 1080 Ti would appear in stock on amazon, check the site literally less than a minute later - sold out.

Saw an EVGA 1080 Ti with an AIO cooler come up for pre-order on nowinstock.net By the time I checked amazon, not only was it sold out but a new listing from a third party seller had it listed for $1500. Amazon originally was selling for $823.

I enjoy gaming on my 1080ti. That's all I use it for. And I paid 700 last March :p This is nuts!

I don't know why people are whining about this.

Oh no, you can earn free money when you're not gaming! This is terrible!

Has there ever been a prior time in PC gaming history where your video card would *pay for itself* within months?

We live in an era of free graphics cards.

I’d prefer not to run my GPU 100% of the day. Reduces lifespan way faster... unless if you don’t care of course.
