Star Wars: Battlefront 2 (2017)

Overwatch lootboxes have nothing to do with impacting gameplay. That's the difference.

MMO is a completely different type of game and people expect a grind. If they had sold this game as having a MMO experience people wouldn't be complaining as much.

If they wanted to lock various gameplay elements behind a pay wall they should have sold the game like Planetside 2, world of tanks, etc and had the base game just be free to play.

Loot boxes in battlefront 2 doesnt impact gameplay when you can unlock the same things in the game for just playing. It just takes longer to unlock them. Either you pay for the Unlocks, and you play to unlock them. Same thing BF4 and BF1 did.

So there goes your argument.

Doesn't HotS and LoL do something similar? Buy the heroes or just play to unlock them?

Exactly. And I do not see people having mass protest in reddits or whatever else about it.

Just to clarify I am not defending EA or Battlefront 2, I am just stating the obvious.

What are you talking about? The heroes in particular must be unlocked by either investing time or pay2win. If you don't have enough heroes you can't even play in some game modes properly.

Again this is COMPLETELY different from Overwatch.

And yes all the BF games since BF2 have had gun unlocks, but those guns never were generally all that much better then what you got off the bat. Finally, none of those games required you to invest time to unlock a class. It would be like if Overwatch or TF2 required you to play 50 hours to unlock a new class.

DOTA/LoL isn't an apt comparison either as they are F2P.

So basically since none of the other games are battlefront 2, it is not OK to let people have a pay 2 win option? Gotcha.

For the record. in BF4 there were TONS of guns that were better if you paid for all the unlocks. I played BF4 quite a bit and I had to unlock the guns if I wanted them. I know its hard to put in time to play a game to unlock guns, but that means you gotta earn it. You cant be spoon feed everything in a game all the time.

If you want easy pay for the unlocks. Otherwise go and earn them and stop bitching about it.

To be fair I barely played BF after the mess that was BF3 and BF4 didn't look much better. I do play BF1 (WW1) and none of the unlocks are all that much better then what you can get stock.

What I can say for a fact is that none of the BF games had you grinding for class/hero/vehicle unlocks. BF1 had the different variations of the vehicles but the grind was trivial. Like maybe 1 hour of gameplay.

Either way they've gone to far with this game and it's why I refuse to buy it.

And I totally agree with you. I think they have gone too far, but it's not gambling when you can spend time to unlock everything by playing.

I do plan to buy it, but I will wait for a discount. I was more interested in the story then I was the MP (Although I have to admit the star battles look absolutely amazing!)

Given how fast these games usually go on sale I can already see this thing going for $30-$40 by Christmas. I'll likely pick it up then.

If sales don't meet their target I could easily see them making this thing free2play and giving people who bought the game a bunch of in-game currency.

So your backer of EA. You stand up for all the wrong things.

EA Access is just fine. I wouldn't give people shit for only paying the price of a starbucks coffee a month to play all their games. You get the latest games in only half a year or so, some times sooner.

I also got the Mirror's Edge games this way. They aren't something I would have spent money on.

I am not a backer of EA. I am not a backer of any company. What I do like to buy is something like EA access which I think is a good deal. I paid for it so I can play some games for free for a full year. I got to play Titanfall 2, SWBF1, Mirrors Edge, and my wife got to play Sims 4.

I do not think paying $30 for a whole year to play those games is a horrible thing at all. If you ask me i think its one of the best things EA has done in a long damn time.

They are pulling paid lootcrates. Announcement expected by tomorrow.

yup, I just read it on another forum...good news but I'm sure people will find something else to complain about or hate on EA about...this is unprecedented in terms of the number of major changes to a game before release due to gamer outrage...

"it seems Crystals, the in-game currency that can be bought by real-world money, is off the table! All Star Cards, Heroes, and game-changing items can only be obtained by natural progression (grinding)! When DICE mentioned that a “progression iteration” was incoming at launch, we never thought it’d be this big, but we’ll take it with open arms"

saw this on IGN..

"We’re turning off all in-game purchases," DICE GM Oskar Gabrielson's statement reads. "We will now spend more time listening, adjusting, balancing and tuning. This means that the option to purchase crystals in the game is now offline, and all progression will be earned through gameplay. The ability to purchase crystals in-game will become available at a later date, only after we’ve made changes to the game. We’ll share more details as we work through this."

More like EA is listening to their customers. But if you want to keep referring to them as a demeaning word like 'kiddies' to make yourself feel....something....you keep doing that (y)

Not sure how it's demeaning. Most of the player base will be kids. So I am just stating a fact.

If EA is really doing this it must mean that they've really missed their estimated sales and are having to cave.

It was either cave with the pay2win aspect or make the game free2play.

But as we approach the worldwide launch, it's clear that many of you feel there are still challenges in the design. We’ve heard the concerns about potentially giving players unfair advantages. And we’ve heard that this is overshadowing an otherwise great game. This was never our intention. Sorry we didn’t get this right.

It's unprecedented because this is a Star Wars game and multiple generations have grown up (or are growing up) consuming every aspect of the IP. These Frostbyte games are the closest you'll get to basically having a playable version of the films, so it's no wonder there's mass outrage when the devs take this opportunity to design their game in such a grindy unfun way while also offering a way to bypass said grind for extra $$$. They've done it in the Battlefield games too and it was very unfun to join a game with the basic set of weapons while some other dude ripped through with an auto-shotgun I wouldn't get for another 30+ levels of grinding. The difference now (I guess) is that the Star Wars crowd is orders of magnitude larger than the BF crowd.

for those still complaining about the fact that Dice mentioned that crystal currency would return at a later date need to relax...it doesn't matter if/when the crystal currency comes back because by that time most players will have progressed and unlocked most items they want naturally through normal gameplay time...the crystals would give the biggest advantage during the first week or so when most normal players are grinding

The game probably appeals to a wider audience. The popularity of the movies and antiicpation for the next in the series has a lot to do with that.

Still not buying this game, but this is pretty huge.

exactly...the people that were yelling the loudest never had any intention of buying this in the first place and were just using the controversy as a sort of soapbox or internet mob mentality

Who said I never would have bought this game? I believe I made a post a long time ago in this thread stating that if it had SP and bots I would consider it. Without all the bullshit, this could have been a great game.

No, they really didn't do this in Battlefield, and if you were getting ripped through it wasn't because of a magical god gun after 30 levels. You didn't spend very much time in either of those games if that was your perception. The fact that extra battlepacks could be purchased was a joke that everyone pretty much ignored because the game showered you with free ones just through normal play. And there wasn't any magic gun in those either.

The starter weapons in BF3 and BF4 were some of the best all around guns. Same with the primary on vehicles/aircraft.

I recall playing BF3 and the clusterfuck that was Metro with half the players running around with USAS-12 + frag rounds. Not saying the entire experience was like that or that I even disliked the game, but I hate unlock systems in general in FPS games.

And it certainly looks like they've been offering weapon shortcut packs for a long time so not sure why you'd say they didn't: https://www.origin.com/can/en-us/st...-4/addon/battlefield-4-weapon-shortcut-bundle

Its great if its true but I'm now thinking about one thing - BOHICA. Bend Over Here It Comes Again. I'm wondering what the tradeoff is going to be. I hate to be that guy because I kind of indirectly defended them but c'mon guys - this is EA we're talking about.

They're literally like dealing with a Sith Lord.

Wait a minute - this is kind of tricky, theyre going to turn off purchases, people are going to buy the game and then theyre going to turn them back on after its too late to get a refund.

Ive seen this before - three times my brother told me that the girl he's dating cant have kids then within 6 months shes pregnant.

EA has had 3 flops this quarter. Fifa, NFS and now potentially this. Only way to recover was to sell lots of SFBF2. Hence, why these crates are off for a while. Make people succumb to buying and ride on movie.
Enable next year lol.

I think ea will keep to their word.

from what Oskar Gabrielson says, it looks like he gets the picture that real money and items that give an advantage should not go together.

Alright, I'm significantly more interested now.

If EA keeps their word, there's a pretty big incentive to purchase- we should reward companies when they are responsive to customer concerns.
