iOS 7 Discussion

I'm still getting used to scrolling of my web pages, I scroll from the bottom of the page and I keep bringing up the quick settings menu.

There is an option to disable that from apps, and also an option to enable it in the lockscreen.

And background app refresh. And trust relationships when connected via USB to a computer. And iCloud Keychain (granted, it's not in 7.0, but it's coming). And an actually useful AirDrop. And 64-bit support. And Facetime Audio (aka "the iPod Touch can now be used as a true wifi-based cell phone"). And Activation Lock. And per-website filtering. And a redesigned Safari.

No really big new features, nah.

Let's see...I don't connect to USB
I can't do 64 bit support
I never use Facetime
I don't use Safari, I use Chrome which already had the functionality of the iCloud keychain.

I'm not saying there aren't new features there, I'm saying that my day-to-day experience using the phone isn't really changed by any new features. Nothing to make me feel like it's truly a leap forward, rather than just a small step

I've got very mixed feelings on the interface. The operational changes are fine, but the interface... Kinda feel a bit "Metro'd" here.

First, who designed the buttons in Safari, the creator of Tempest ?

I'm also not really digging how clear control buttons have been replaced with just words like they are links or something.

I think you can return your wallpaper to normal if you turn off the parallax effect in the accessibility portion of the settings panel.

I can't find the "parallax" option. I'm on a 4s if that matters.

It is smooth as silk. But as I have been fearing, it looks like something for a little baby. It doesnt look tough or cool, it looks like something for a 2 year old would use on that fisher price tablet.

Not impressed at all. I really need to get work to allow me to go back to an android phone.

I like the new look and don't think it's childish at all.

It seems like the majority of people that hate it are/were Android users.

The interface is, to me, an upgrade from that antiquated looking crap from iOS6, but still subpar to whats available on the Android side. I mean the iPhone does what it does very well in my opinion, and thats a business style Smartphone. I dont use it as a life support system to check out what Miley licked or if my Beats sound crisp. Now would I mind if it looked steampunk and had more of a rusty hue...No, but ill survive. I have verified that my desk is indeed not level and will have maintence up here shortly. Oh, and I like the new sounds that are available. The iOS6 sounds were seizure inducing.

Bottom line, it's the same damn operating system, with a new visual language. 95% of stuff is exactly where it was before. It's just a little more obtuse. Some is better(flashlight! "multitasking" cards"), but a lot is worse within that 5% (Calendar is worse, somehow; text-based weather in the notification center [really?!]; worse battery life; slow-ass transitional animations).

I REALLY wish I could get a different phone.

You're probably the only person who thinks Apple makes enterprise oriented products.

It's been 7 years since the original iPhone. Apple is making the assumption that, by now, people understand that everything on the screen can be touched and interacted with, and they no longer have to use metaphors that outline specific areas of the screen to tap.

And people understand hyperlinks very well. Embedded hyperlinks have been around 20 years.

I feel that iOS 6 (while being 'outdated' by hipster-design-nut standards) at least felt cohesive, tight and fast. The experience was consistent across all applications as well and was one of the reasons I've always enjoyed iOS over android. (Though I'll admit my android experience is from many years ago and I bet it's improved).

The animations feel slow and the icons look really silly and it's kind of disorienting when you open an app that still uses the old interface conventions. I also think that it's weird how the status bar at the top is transparent. In a lot of the apps I find my eyes 'searching' more as there is a lot more information cluttered about on the same color background.

I find the new calendar app pretty lousy too.

It feels like a faux smartphone interface designed for a movie...

I think for me - more presentation of contrast in the background between different sections of the OS would help. A good example is the calendar app. Tons of text all on a white background with very little in the way of visual cues.

Everything in the Calendar app can be interacted with. The white space you hate is the contrasting element you want.

I find the new Calendar much more useful than the old. I stopped using the old Calendar in favor of third party apps. Now I'm back, at least for now.

The problem I have with it is that it presents information in a much less efficient way. For example, in the old calendar, the default view was a month view on top, with the selected day's entries below. This allowed for VERY fast checking of multiple days' worth of appointments. All I had to do was click on a day and it's information was visible. Click on another day, and it's information was instantly up.

Now, I can only view EITHER a day OR the whole month. I can't check one day, one after another quickly. I have to click a day, then go back to month view, then to day and then to month view. it's literally twice as many actions, PLUS slow ass animations in between.

Hah, same here. I definitely feel some lag, although not android like lag. Not sure if I can rollback to 6 since i did my update through my phone. Argh even as i type this, i feel lag

You can turn off the control menu access in apps and the lock screen from the Settings.
Another member pointed that out to me in the other iOS 7 thread.

I don't feel any lag on my 2 devices, honestly, seems a bit smoother to me.

They also need to fix the portrait/landscape orientation animation. It's laggy as hell now and is purely reminiscent of Android. Or is it because I'm on older hardware?

I find it to be a huge improvement. My workflow across the board is faster now. Web browsing even more so due to the addition of the simple edge drag gestures to go forward/back, the renderer in Safari being sped up was a nice bonus as well.

The multi-tasking cards don't mean much to me, I never used the double-click of home button to switch between apps as it was - Only to force shut them if I needed to.

Control pane is huge. iOS needed this since forever. This was the only reason I ever thought to jailbreak my device as it is. So i'm good with iOS now.

New notification/Today drop down pane is nice as well. Massive improvement in every way with the today view.

Frankly, i'm 100% satisfied with iOS now.

I like the new look, more or less. My main gripe is the smaller view area for folders. I wish I could go back to the older/larger layout. I can pretty much guarantee that anything on page 2 of a folder is going to be collecting dust.

The only lag I notice is when I start to type in a text message. Other than that there isn't any lag...and honestly that lag isn't too bad. I wish there were zero lag...but the lag that is there is better than any lag I noticed when I had Android.

Have you tried using the search in the top right of the Calendar App? It will place all appointments in an ordered list.

That's not very helpful either. For example, let's say I'm in court, and the judge asks: What Mondays this month are you available at 10am? (this is exceedingly common)

Before, I could tap 4 times in quick succession (one for every Monday).
Now, I have to tap 7-8 times to survey those Mondays.

Before, the tapping on every Monday sorted out everything else that was happening. Using the search option only lists EVERYTHING going on. if I have 10-15 things going on every week between those Mondays, searching visually through all that for JUST the monday entries is even slower.

I see what you mean. If you choose Monday from the month view, you can swipe the calendar dates to jump to the next or previous week.

(swipe the area that I highlighted in the blue box)

Does that help?

Hell yea. That makes it a lot easier. Still not AS quick, since now we're only talking 2 extra taps, and not AS efficient, since you're drilled down and can't see the month any more, but MUCh better
Thanks!

Just wish this kind of thing was more apparent.

Apple has been using swiping group UIs for years now. Any time you see a horizontal layout of common elements (dates, in this instance), you can swipe them horizontally to reveal more. The App Store's front page uses the same UI.

You can also rotate into landscape view to see a blown-up week view. You just scroll to 10 AM and then swipe.

Yea, but it is just not terribly apparent. I mean, i've been using smart phones for years, so I'm not tech-nub, but the fact that a swipe in the view Miyagi pointed out goes in 1-week increments is not very apparent.

And the week-view doesn't help, since it suffers from the same info-overload as the search menu. It's a little better since it's arranged differerntly, but it doesn't have the week-increments so swiping is inefficient.

I just wish I could use a third party app. This is a work phone so for most stuff I have to use the built in apps.

Usually the indicator of being able to horizontally swipe is partial off-screen content (as you see in the App Store and elsewhere) or some sort of gradual fading at one or both sides. It doesn't quite look like they're doing either in this case, so the confusion is understandable.

I'm still somewhat disappointed that action items aren't more strongly-differentiated from statics.

I need to come clean that this is my first iOS device, didn't have any apps installed, and updated to 7 as soon as I got my phone activated. Listened to DI.FM on the way to work, and the battery life took a good 20% hit on a 45 minute drive. I have excellent LTE reception on my entire route. The only thing I can think of was that I don't have BT in the car, so I use the headphone out jack on the phone.

walks like a duck, talks like a duck...when it comes to a mobile device, Enterprise is simplicity in my mind. They all do the same things, but which takes the least effort and learning curve. Android walks the boundry between some dumbass 5" mini-tablet in my pocket that makes calls and a normal size phone that has bubbles floating around on the screen pre-loaded to get MSN updates.

maybe im just getting old.

How else would you expect to change weeks in the standard view, though? Zoom out to month view and then tap the next week? iOS UI only works that way when changing applications, not views within an application.

I just don't understand how you built an expectation that a common UI element wouldn't work in this specific instance. Not saying that in a bad or demeaning way, I just don't see the flow chart.

walks like a duck, talks like a duck…

You are the only person who thinks that eagle is walking like a duck. The iPhone can be used in an enterprise environment, but it's far from what Blackberry used to be in the same arena.

That sounds normal for streaming music to an iPhone 5. I know streaming music from DI or Soundcloud quickly drains my battery. I recommend picking up a car charger for your commute. (The one I linked is a 2.1 amp so expect faster charges compared to the standard 1 amp)

Look at the other items that slide:
The unlock slide (Arrow)
The notification and control centers (Arrow)
The Home screen (pips)
Multitasking menu (Offscreen items and row of icons)
Calendar (month view and day view) (offscreen items/arrows)
Notes (arrows and offscreen items)
COntacts (Side alphabet)
Messaging (arrows and offscreen items)

ALL of these stock Apple components have a visual cue of "More info this way" whether it be via an arrow pointing in that direction, elements or items that are partially offscreen, or there is some kind of alternate indicator (like the pips at the bottom of your homescreen showing which screen you are on and how many there are).

There is no such indicator for this sliding option. The same can be said for the standard week view. there is no indication that rotating the device unveils it (it was MONTHS before I knew it even existed after getting the phone a year ago). For some reason there are these random things sprinkled around that are essentially hidden, with no reason for you to think they are there.

So my battery is draining about 3x faster than normal...I'm already at ~30%...normally by this time I'm around ~65%.

However, that being said, I'm pretty sure I'm playing with it a lot more to learn and mess with stuff...so I may be killing it. Plus, I don't use the auto screen dim...but still...it's going faster...hopefully it's just because I'm playing with it so much.

Background App Refresh may have something to do with decreased battery life. Settings > General > Background App Refresh. Double check to see what Apps are using it or disable it all together.

OK fair enough, im a victim of my own circumstance I guess. Im in Healthcare and it "seems" to be the de-facto handheld, Im obviously mistaken considering your stance and the global numbers so ill quietly slip out the back. :)
