Diablo 3 Discussion Thread

stevedave started the discussion by claiming that wizards are outclassed and that he won't play them until they're buffed. cageymaru and chockomonkey (two people who haven't even played the game in at least six months by their own timelines if you look back at them starting another senseless argument in this thread back in March) also chimed in with how weak the wizard is.

If you haven't played the game in a timeframe where there have been multiple balance patches (including the latest that specifically buffed the wizard) and whining about the balance in a thread about a game you no longer play that's trolling, not the person posting evidence that they are wrong.

Sure i haven't played in awhile, but i've read every post in this thread and have read all their patch notes, which are all pretty underwhelming.

Aside from buffed blizzard, what have they done to the wizard to make them more relevant and diverse?

Did they add a Lightening AP spending move? Do they still have 2 Lightening signature moves? Have they addressed the vast amount of worthless runes? Does diamond skin scale?

There are so many things (imo) that the Wizard needs in order to feel like you can actually use their skill choosing system the way they marketed it... but i guess all their classes are like that for the most part.

They patch in true blizzard form (i remember WoW patch notes all too well). Buff one move for a couple classes. Next patch there will be a couple other tweaks which skew the balance again. But never true whole-picture balancing.

My Wiz certainly isn't squishy and can take some serious damage, including RD. Problem is its only good for mid MP 5-7 levels. I only wish they hadn't nerf'd energy armor as that would have allowed us to get more dps without losing defense.

Only if they take the passive....ZING!!!

haha I didn't even mean to set that up for you.

Which is part of what I was talking about. Unless you are running a Stun Lock critical mass build it can be hard for a wizard to make the jump to MP 10.

not that its impossible. Its just much easier to MP10 with a Monk and super easy with a barb.

I found the Force Armor exploit all on my own and farmed the shit out of Act 3 way back before 1.0.3. 3000 Life per second with 4000 life and monsters could only hit me for 1400 max which would heals in .4 seconds......It was some cheap ass shit and I abused it so bad....I miss it.

try the meteor/disintegrate build I posted in one of my examples earlier in the thread
here's the guy's build and other videos of him playing it on mp10 in a few different acts (and he only has 190K dps)

Does a 190k dps Monk kill the same mobs faster and survive easier? Yes-No

That's all anyone is saying.

Edit: That guys kill speed in the video is atrocious.

Me and my friend just started HC this weekend. After getting to PL 70+ in SC, we decided it was time to try something new.

We already had monk ~level 17 and we levelled them to 40.

After that, one of my friend sees us play HC and takes his barb (lvl15) so I decided to create a new Wiz and play with my two friend's barb.

One of my friend was one of the top Hardcore players back in the vanilla Diablo 2 (while I was top in the Softcore ;))

Weird to farm items with a monk lvl 40 and be happy to drop a legendary chest armor ilvl15 :p

I reached PL 90 yesterday on my Wiz. Could probably reach PL 92 if it wasn't for the maintenance today...nice timing Blizz. Increase mf/xp ends at 9:00am pacific tomorrow.

I started playing again this weekend and I hate to admit it but I'm having fun. The anniversary buff is nice, too bad it won't last for another week. It's crazy how cheap the gear is these days. I quit around 7-8 months ago with some pretty bad gear and right before I quit I sold an ammy for 210 million gold. These days that ammy would sell for probably 20 million. I geared my barb up for 200 million and I'm sitting at around 180k dps and I can comfortably farm mp8 and I've been farming the normal mobs in A1 field of misery mp10. Get about 2-4 legs every run it seems, they are all garbage but it's still exciting to see em drop.

Its funny that some of you have a different opinion here. I haven't been that active in this forum in awhile, mostly been hanging out at the diablo sub on reddit, which I must add is a lot bigger than the few who participate in this thread. (Only relevant that I said this because of what I'm about to say next)

But this same question always pops up on there, mainly because of returning players and whatnot but among the hundreds/thousands? who particpate in that sub it is pretty well agreed upon that the order goes something like this.

Barb = Pretty much OP right now with perma wrath. No other class can farm MP10 for the same amount of gold that a barb can.

Wizard = CM has been and is still probably the second strongest build right behind a WW/rend barb. Their effective dps is much much higher than what paper will ever say. Archon is pretty strong, now that they buffed group play.

Monks and WD are kind of tied next. Although since cloud of bats got that huge buff they are becoming very popular and very strong. Don't get me wrong, monks are great (my fav class atm, but they just can't be deal the consistent eDPS like the top two classes can) I think SteveDave keeps talking about bells. Bells are awesome, but they have the side effect that they push the mobs apart. You don't want that. Well then you can cyclone strike which is great, but thats not exactly sustainable since those are both spirit spenders.

And well its kind of universal that DHs are at the bottom right now. They just can't effectively provide consistent dps, and real no good big time hatred spenders. They can still farm high mps, but they have a ridiculous cost when it comes to gearing DHs for that. Exactly opposite of barbs.

Edit: Obviously this list solely hinges on efficiency, or in other words, money spent. All classes can put MP10 on farm, but at what cost? Clearly you can build a monk that would smash a cm wiz. But if you were to spend the same amount on all chars, then the list above applies.

Two questions:

1. What's the best way to get better gear for a barb running MP6 but wants to go further?

2. Does anyone play hardcore mode seriously, if so, why? Wouldn't it be old if you managed to get your guy really high level...just to die? Does that not beat the point especially since you could be working on other toons?

I play nearly every night with two real life friends. A few people from this thread have added us and play regularly as our 4th.

It's difficult to describe but there's a certain sense of accomplishment having hard core heroes at high level. There's a particular sense of fear when your life is in danger and your heart races until you get out of a jam. And one of the most important aspects is that the economy is completely functional from level 1-60. There's no missing gap like in soft core where gear from level 20-59 is basically worthless and unsellable and usually uninteresting.

But it is shocking when you lose a high level. Like stunned silence on teamspeak from everyone :\

How many hours have you played and what is your toon?

I can't answer your second question, but maybe I can answer the first. I'm playing a Monk but I'm in the same position. (Playing MP7, but am trying to go higher) An advantage of higher MP's is that the frequency of legendary drops and valuable rare items become quite noticeable.

I've been farming the last few days on MP6 on Festering Woods/Weeping Hollow and sometimes adding Fields of Misery/Halls of Agony to it. Three drops alone (Natalya's boots + 2 amulets) earned me over 1 billion of gold, allowing me to move to MP7.

Make sure you farm/play on high density levels. First try to get 5 stacks by playing smaller/less density maps, then move on to the big stuff.

My favorite routes:

Festering Woods (for stacks) then moving on to Weeping Hollow. Other great follow-up locations are Fields of Misery and Halls of Agony (all levels)

Act 2: Unknown Depths (for stacks) then Western/Eastern Channel and Dahlgur Oasis (no particular order and make sure you don't skip The Ruins in Dahlgur Oasis) Vault of the Assassin is optional but I’m not a real fan of Desolate Sands. (Annoying enemies)

Act 3: Starting in Tower of the Cursed (stacks) Then moving on to Stonefort (Both levels), Underground Keep Level 2/3 and Battlefield + Bridge until Siegebreaker lair. (Again no particular order and not all levels are required) Arreat Crater level 2 is optional.

It’s IMHO not necessary to play for hours after hours with full stacks. I got just as good results with short bursts of farming (15-30 minutes) Actually the best items dropped even before I had reached full stacks and during short playing sessions.

The other option is keeping a good eye on the AH and items that are considered valuable for a Barb. You can get some good deals and sell them for a higher price. But it requires some practice.

Hardcore gives you a bigger sense of accomplishment, and definitely a lot more adrenaline. Plus, anyone who likes roguelikes gets to play the game like one. Well, a realtime one.

I just got back into this game after not playing for a really long time...

I have never found a set piece, and most legendaries I have ever found were crap. I played yesterday for about 4-5 hours and found one legendary that was also crap.

I have never had more than 500k or so in gold, and it seems that in order to upgrade any of my current gear I would need far more than that.

I'm currently wearing some set pieces now, but they were all given to me by my friend who randomly sold an item on the AH for 250million gold so he blew through some of it.

I guess my only chance at picking up better gear than I have now is to randomly stumble upon an epic item i don't need and hope it sells for a ton of gold.

Welcome to Diablo 3. The reason why I haven't played it in quite a while.

You can clear inferno MP0 SC with less than a million in gold, and that is easily collected from gold drops alone in inferno.

Mind linking your profile?

Welcome to aRPGs. The reason why I haven't played it in quite a while.

In all fairness.... FTFY

I'm in this exact same boat in PoE. Farming currency orbs (gold in D3) just never seems to get you enough to get the right gear to reach endgame. You have to farm uniques (legendaries in d3) until you get the one that's worth a lot. Similar in both games, the perfectly-rolled rare is probably the BiS item in the game, but the odds of getting it to roll the way everyone wants is so staggering that you vendor bag after bag of complete-shit rares.

MP 10 IMO is the best way to farm and level up right now. You get a ton of exp and monsters drop bonus items when killed. If you have low DPS you can just skip mobs and kill just trash mobs you get a lot of items and exp.

Getting to MP efficiently is a bit of a step....I can only effectively farm MP10 with my monk. To me the key was high damage with life steal. Here is my dude. I blow through MP10 crazy fast.
http://us.battle.net/d3/en/profile/dirkdirden-1579/hero/10075786

The dude I primarily play with has spent much less on his gear than myself and probably does it a bit better than myself ....obviously he is a barb.

I feel people don't quite understand the bell monk so I should make and post a video. What is the most common program used to record a video?

I blew all the money i had left and picked up some more cheaper piece sets..

Whats crazy is if you look at my profile compared to stevedave's, they look similar but he has more than double the damage I do.

my other problem is i don't have any high end gems....

Diablo 3 released some stats for its 1 year anniversary.

There are some pretty staggering numbers there.

http://us.battle.net/d3/en/blog/9691895/diablo-iii’s-one-year-anniversary-infographic-5-20-2013

LOL @ this comment:

not included in infographic:
- amount of gold duped from last minute rush job additions
- Percentage of accounts that are actually bots
- number of times Jay Wilson almost killed one of Blizzards vaunted Trilogy.

I've been playing quite a bit the last 2 weeks (was taking advantage of the anniversary bonus), and I have to admit I'm really having fun with my Monk. My DPS is OK at this point but I need to get my EHP up. Sitting @ 400k-ish before dodge and without Seize The Initiative.

Profile

If anyone want's to group hit me up. All but afew people I know have stopped playing and it's difficult to find a good pub game.

Thats how I started pretty much. Slowly and steadily kept upgrading. Buying the same thing you currently have but 5 times the price for only 1000 DPS jump is a bit of a downer.

My monk is pretty high up, though not close to the highest, so I wouldn't be too concerned about it....Plus I have 300 hours on my monk and 600 hours on my wizard so I have had quite a bit of time go find the goods.

I'll have to take a look when I get home, but I guess the other question is, where are you struggling? Clearing inferno? MP?

So I'm no Monk expert but take a look at your character on d3up

http://d3up.com/b/664299

Every point into crit chance is like putting 30 dex or 30 avg damage
Every point into crit dmg is like putting 5 into dex or 5 avg dmg

It looks like you're over allocating on dex, so you might think it's going to cost an arm and a leg to make any significant upgrades. In reality, sacrificing dex for crit/critd will yield better returns in dps for now.

Lets take your amulet for example. A search for 5crit, 50critdamage, and socket showed me this for 15,000 gold (buyout) only

6.5 crit
63 crit damage
socket

Drop in a basically free flawless square, and that will increase your dps by 10k, all that for gold that can be found in under a minute.

For 132k, i found a ring
80 dex
3.5 crit chance
33 crit damage
79 vitality
31 min damage

giving another 6k dps at the cost of only 1.7k ehp

With 90k+ DPS, I dont think MP1 should be a problem (again I'm no monk expert). With that, dropped gold alone should be enough to start buying better gems. Go for star emerald on your skorn first. After that, you can look at upgrades in the 250k range. The way the gear works, gear is multiplicative: It's better to upgrade a lot of pieces of gear with 250k each, than to drop 4 mil only on one item while the rest is crap. Dont aim for the 100mil+ items yet. If you get lucky, good for you, but you still have a lot you can upgrade without ever relying on RNG.

Just installed FRAPS....I recorded with no sound which is quite lame.

here is a MP10 Trash mob run. You just blast through killing white mobs and ignoring everything else...fun as shit and perfect for a bell monk and a rend barb.

I might post more like UBERs but after doing about 50 ubers and not getting a single good right I'm ubered out for now.

What MP level do you play? I've been looking for a decent group, but like you, pub games can vary from very good, but often tend to be very bad. For every pub game I get which goes faster than I can solo, I tend to get 5 pub games where there is at least one player with sub 50k dps in MP8 or above. It's not necessarily that I don't think they can survive it, as I could survive it when I was at that DPS, but I'm looking to improve my experience grinding time.

Anyway, here's my profile if anyone's up for grinding xp.
