Dell U2412M

:(

fireburster, thx for checking.

Is there any way to adjust this? So that I can see those details in the darks.

Otherwise I might have to loose my newly bought, precious U2412M :(

eizen, I did, And I downloaded the DisplayProfile application, so that I can switch inbetween different ICC profiles instantly and see the differenes inbetween them.
But it was still too dark, I couldnt see the folds in the image.

What I did INSTEAD was, I calibrate my monitor with Display Color Calibration in Windows Vista. Which allowed me to manually change the Gamma with a slider. PERFECT!

So I made it light enough to show the folds...but now some images seem washed out hahah.

This calibration business is hard, and I am even doubting my own perception, 'Maybe the folds arent meant to be seen'. But it doesnt make sense, why any would paint those folds in, if it was too dark for them to even see what they were doing??

Some members here have already pointed out that they either can't see the folds, or just barely see them. Is that ok for you guys? Isn't it equivalent to not seeing shadow details in games?

If some images seem washed out when you have gamma turned up high enough to see the folds it could simply mean that portion of that image is not really the best mark to be calibrating your display to, you know? Perhaps the artist just barely made them stand out, on purpose or otherwise. Maybe his own display wasn't well calibrated, etc. Are you having trouble with details in dark areas in other mediums? (games/movies)

I'd look into that before going nuts over that one image. FWIW, I can barely see them on my U2412M, same on my phone and my netbook (though both of those have admittedly poor displays)... On the netbook it's visible if I tilt the screen and wash everything else out, I can try opening it on my tablet later which has a half decent IPS display.

Impulse, Hey thanks for taking the time to chek on your other monitors.
Things is, its not just that image, it failed some of the tests on these websites as well (especially the dark portions of the tests):

http://www.momentskept.com/MonitorCalibration.htm

http://www.w4zt.com/screen/

I am gonna try finding a store that have several monitors running (including U2412M) and check to see if I get the same results. Hopefully I'll have some new insight that I can share here.

And guys, all in all its a good monitor. I have decided to keep it and buy a calibration tool to make sure I not only get the brightness/gamma right, but also the color. But with that said, I am also planning to buy a U2711 later this summer :)

Greetings all!

I've been a lurker here for a long time and have always found great information here. In an effort to avoid bothering people here with my simple question, I attempted to ask Dell themselves but found the 2 reps I spoke to completely useless since I still have the same question.

I have a m1530 laptop with VGA and HDMI connections. I know the u2412 does not have HDMI. Can I hook my laptop up with the VGA to the monitor without losing anything the monitor has to offer (color and using the 1920x1200)? One rep on the phone said if I used VGA I can only have 720p. The other said I can use HDMI even though the u2412 doesnt have it.

I'd like to take advantage of the current deal at 299 so any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm a bit of a novice and would have bought a TN monitor for much less but everyone seems to rave about this monitor so why not spend up I suppose.

Thanks,

EJ

You can do 1920x1200 over VGA just fine.

HDMI to the u2412 would be using HDMI->DVI cable

newegg has them for 299 also till the 9th.

u2412m

I missed this before, thanks.

I also saw they have the U2312HM for 249, which is making me reconsider the U2412M. I just want a higher resolution display for software/web development than this 19", but I do want IPS.

Thank you all for the quick responses. It looks like I'll pull the trigger on this today then.

One thing to confirm, would the HDMI > DVI still allow me to do 1920x1200? I thought I read somewhere that HDMI is limited in its output?

Thanks,

EJ

Depends on the cable version I think.
Specifications

The HDMI specification defines the protocols, signals, electrical interfaces and mechanical requirements of the standard.[42] The maximum pixel clock rate for HDMI 1.0 was 165 MHz, which was sufficient to support 1080p and WUXGA (1920×1200) at 60 Hz. HDMI 1.3 increased that to 340 MHz, which allows for higher resolution (such as WQXGA, 2560×1600) across a single digital link.[43] An HDMI connection can either be single-link (type A/C) or dual-link (type B) and can have a video pixel rate of 25 MHz to 340 MHz (for a single-link connection) or 25 MHz to 680 MHz (for a dual-link connection). Video formats with rates below 25 MHz (e.g., 13.5 MHz for 480i/NTSC) are transmitted using a pixel-repetition scheme.[1]

I am using an HDMI->DVI cable on one of my U2412Ms. Works perfectly at 1920x1200 :) Just using the cable that came with my video card.

I got my monitor today and it's up and running. It's really nice so far but Win7 is listing the refresh as 59hz yet the monitor says 60hz. There's an option for 60 but it won't do anything when I select it. I'm currently running it through DVI.

Don't worry about it. It's something like 59.9khz anyways, and it is really 60hz for all intents and purposes.

Is the display port cable that comes with the monitor any good?
I bought one from monoprice that I'm using right now and it works perfectly fine.
It's this one: http://www.monoprice.com/products/p...=10246&cs_id=1024606&p_id=6007&seq=1&format=2

Ok since I just go my display port cable I connected my Macbook Pro to the Dell. I could see the line a bit on the illustration you posted. But then I went into (the dell OSD) Menu->Color Settings->Gamma->Mac
That made things freaking bright so yeah I can see all the lines now lol
Give that a try.

Hey guys, I've currently got a single u2311h, and I'm thinking about getting 3x u2412m for portrait surround, but there is something that's been bugging me about the u2311h which I'm not sure if it's just something that's tied to my particular monitor or if it follows IPS monitors(or all monitors?)

When scrolling fast down web pages I get very obvious screen tearing always on the same place on the monitor, close to the top left corner, it's like there's a box that refreshes slower than the rest of the monitor.

It's also very noticeable in google sketchup, which I use a lot as a hobby, when orbiting or panning around a room there's a line across the entire monitor that breaks up walls etc, it's not always in the same place, but always around 1/3rd down from the top of the monitor.

I haven't noticed this when gaming, possibly because I force adaptive v-sync? but it annoys the hell out of me, and I'd hate to get 3x ~300$ monitors and have them all act like this. ;/

Ugh these monoprice arms suck... They tilt forward, the clamp isn't good on an ikea galant (needs a thicker desk). Even when I put something in between (folded carbord) and tighten it up it would move if I tried to push my display back. I ordered two and one of them came broken out of the box... So yeah maybe I'll save for an ergotron.

Sitting in front of a U2311H right now and I never experienced such a problem. Maybe it's your graphics card?

Hmm.. good point, happens on my 2001fp's as well, must be related to my graphics card.

I'm seeing these monitors drop in price all over the place, the price got dropped down a third here in Iceland for example.
Anyone know of a particular reason? New model on the horizon?

The U2412M isn't even a year old, I doubt it's getting replaced already. Probably just getting cheaper for Dell to manufacture in volume (or they've miked us early adopters enough).

There are new panels coming out by LG this year so we could be getting a lot of new models in the end of 2012 and after from different manufacturers. Who knows if Dell is releasing anything new but there's no need to put out any new low end IPS monitors this soon.

I ordered two U2412Ms on Friday, should be here tomorrow latest. If you see price drops then enjoy and don't worry.

Yeah, I figured as much. But I created a custom res with 1920x1200 but I managed to get it all the way up to 62hz.

The monitor says it's running at 62hz, with vsync enabled Unreal Tournament was limited to 62 fps but by my eye it's impossible to tell with 2 - 3 hz more if it's really getting there or just dropping those extra few frames. If it doesn't drop them, that's pretty sweet if it is, well I can't actually tell. :p

I wonder if using a DP connection would let me go higher.

I'm having some trouble properly calibrating my U2412M's contrast. I'm unable to easily distinguish the leftmost rectangles from the background on this site, especially the blue rectangle: http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/contrast.php

Right now I have contrast set to 75 and brightness at 35 with an A02 revision.

What settings do you guys use?

I used this database

http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/articles/icc_profiles.htm

try the U2412 profiles listed and see what you like. I'm using the first one on the list under this model and i think it looks great.

On that TFTCentral profiles list do you have to use the one that matches your revision? I got two new A03's today to replace my dying LG246W and I think the U2412M looks a lot worse than the LG did using that single A03 profile that's on the site...

Hi everyone,
Here goes my first post.

I just received my new monitor yesterday. Really nice professional looking styling. Once I plug everything in I was really impress by the contrast and color of the monitor. My old monitor is a Samsung T260 (calibrated) and there's just no comparison in them of image quality.

I used the .icc and calibration from tft and it really shines. I played some game. Diablo 3, Skyrim, Crysis 2. I didn't notice ghosting or anything, but my god the quality of the picture, deepness of the color, the contrast. Wow! It looks like I just upgrade my video card and put everything to max in my game (wich was already on max). I mean I can see so much more detail and the picture is so much more dynamic then it was before.

Of course I miss the 2.5 inch more of my t260 but I prefer quality over size.

One of the best part for me is viewing angle. I don't know why I notice it so much but I do. It was driving me mad. It's really nice not having to think about where to put your head to have the best picture out of your monitor.

I didn't have time to test screen uniformity or light bleed but at first glance it seems alright.

The AG coating I can see in some occasion but it's not a problem. I actually like it because it cut so much light off in the day.

I can go on and on about how this is the best screen I ever had or work with. But then again the only monitors I work with are an old Acer at work, Samsung my t260 and the Samsung p2770 of my wife. So this is my only direct point of reference. The u2412m blow them all out of water.
I’m sold to IPS. I don’t think I will ever go back to a TN monitor.

PS: Tabs: Try to use the first icc and calibration made from tft on the list. I got great result with it.

I'm using the A02 icc one now and it's better. I still think the LG looked nicer though - amazing considering it's 5+ years old. I think part of it is the AG coating - looking at both monitors off side by side, I see way more reflection in the LG.

I just check out the LG you talk about. It's a MVA Panel so the difference you see must be because of it's contrast ratio advantage. You will never be able to get the same contrast from an IPS panel.

I'd leave it alone... I've heard people damaging panels driving them over their factory refresh rate...

Question on connectivity for the U2412M... or any other monitors with displayport.

I have an XFX 6590 that has 2 DVI, 1 HDMI, and 2 MiniDP.
I've currently got 4 displays on it: 1 DVI, 1 HDMI, and 2 Active miniDP to DVI adapters.

If I got two of these U2412Ms, would I be able to do away with the 2 Active MiniDP to DVI adapters and just use miniDP to DP cables from monoprice?

Yes. I'm using two such cables with my U2412Ms (and an old TN display on DVI). MP only had the cables in white when I got mine but it's no biggie, not like they're visible on my setup.

anybody using two of these? if so could you show me what your setup looks like? I am interested in a second but am not sure if its worth it !

I've got two of them sitting next to an older 24" 1920x1200 Samsung TN LCD... Not sure if that's what you're looking for. It was my way of trying out Eyefinity while hedging my bets in case I didn't dig it, bought the two Dells and had the old Samsung already, had I hated EF I would've just sold the Samsung (which was previously paired with an old 19" CRT).

I'll probably sell it eventually but for the opposite reason, I want a third matching U2412M. :p They make the TN display look sad. I can post some pics later if you want... Tho my desk setup isn't ideal and I haven't been able to wall mount them how I wanted. The desk works fine as far as the displays, but leaves little room for my speakers, they're a little farther than I'd like too (the desk has several shelves), tho it works well when gaming.
