PC Alan Wake coming soon?

5.1 = 4speakers 2 front 2 back 1 middle and 1 subwoofer

7.1= 2 front 2middle 2 back 1 middle and 1 sub....

It's all bout replicating the cinema experience at home and immersion.

Yes not only a physical one! 2 more speakers but u get 2 more sound channels as well gasp! :p

OMG guys obviously I know that 7.1 has 2 more speakers lol Does it make an audible difference? I only have one friend with 7.1 and I couldn't tell the difference between 5.1 Perhaps it was the source that was the problem though.

With material like this, yes:

http://www.blu-raystats.com/Stats/Stats.php?OrderBy=Title&Audio=7.1&pSize=50&p=2

Lots of blu ray title that have 7.1. Cs source has 7.1 sound .... it's like cheating.

I don't have the space to go past 5.1 but I've heard some 7.1 setups and if you can swing it, it's worthwhile.

Want madness? You can get high end receivers out there that go up to 11.2. Imagine that.

Good to know. I've had 7.1 amps for a while but never bothered going from 5.1 to 7.1. I'll hook up some extra speakers and try out some blurays.

Remedy Executive Vice President Aki Järvilehto told Rock Paper Shotgun that the PC version will feature Steamworks and promised that “the experience of running it on a high-end PC, with a ninja set-up, is a big difference.”

RPS: So it will support PC-grade textures and the latest DirectX?

Aki Järvilehto: The experience of running it on a high-end PC, with a ninja set-up, is such a big difference. On a large display, on a high-end PC, it looks gorgeous.

RPS: Would you prefer to pay it on PC?

Aki Järvilehto: I love to play it on both platforms. It was a blast on Xbox and it’s running well on PC.

So, DX9 and no texture upgrades?
I can not imagine answering a question that direct, in that evasive of a way, without that being the case.
Disappointing, but that does not kill a game on it's own.

Its because all games are stereo and are emulated to 5.1 and 7.1. Demux a sound file in CS:Source with eac3to to individual channels. You will find it only has 2 :)

A BluRay however. Demux the HD Audio. It will spit out a channel for each individual speaker and is true surround sound.

But then again the mechanics for games and movies is different. One is per-rendered one is real time.

As for Alan Wake. Getting this on PC Since my 360 busted. And since its steamworks I can use my gift card and get it free.

Games don't emulate surround sound, they mix it real-time. The reason you get split channels when demuxing movie audio is because it's pre-recorded, mixed in a studio, and then encoded to a multi-channel file.

Most games have mono sound effects. The game is responsible for working with your sound card to determine your speaker configuration (set in Windows) and then the game's audio engine mixes, in real-time, which channels the sound is supposed to come from based on your position in the game and it usually does a very good job at fading sounds between speakers.

Since games are interactive, they can't have pre-recorded multi-channel audio except for music. For movies, it's just best to mix, record, and encode to a multi-channel audio format because that movie never changes after it's done.

While I give credit for what I'm seeing here as far as making a PC version of a game worth something...the fact of the matter is no amount of eye candy or DX11 magic tricks is going to change the reality that what's underneath the extra varnish really isn't worth much.

At least IMO.

What graphical customisations will the player be able to make?

We are still finalising the options, but the players can naturally adjust resolution, run in full screen or windowed and change numerous graphics quality settings such as anti-aliasing, FXAA, shadow quality, draw distance and so on.

The players can also turn off the HUD if they wish. This was a feature many of our fans wanted for Alan Wake Xbox360

I hope they don't screw this up. But seriously, this game should of been on the PC many months ago, but nope. Didn't they think they would get screwed by pirates? Dumbasses...

7.1 goes perfectly with my 8 ears.
Your brain derives much greater positionality from audio sources than your two ears physically allow for. Interpreting subtle variations in time delays and such, which is why your ears need to look so fuckin' weird. Complex science, that.

There's something odd about the system requirements they published earlier: it calls for a DX10 GPU, but they also promise XP compatibility. Something isn't quite adding up.

Does anyone remember back when Quad Cores just being sold by Intel, and the developers of Alan Wake made a big presentation showing how awesome the game will be on the PC with a Quad core? I'm guessing they were 100% full of shit.

They explained on their forums it is in relation to the power of the GPU, not the DX compatibility; DX9 cards are not powerful enough for the game.

Yep. Then they decided to be whores to Microsoft and told PC gamers to fuck off because the game was better suited for the living room via Xbox 360.

If I listened to most of the pc gamers here bitch about all the consolized crap games (and rightfully so on most) then I would end up not purchasing anything at all. I might as well take a chance and see for myself. Might be pleasantly surprised...or not but it's better than playing nothing at all!

There is a difference between an awesome port like the Batman games (AA and AC) and lets say Rage where the console influence is quite obvious (low detail crap textures, poor controls, problems running on well established hardware, etc)

The screenshots say otherwise lol

Except this is an easy one. Go see what 360 gamers have been saying for months. Just because it's coming to the PC isn't going to change the fundamentals or the game itself any more than another fascinating concept that fell way short like LA Noire. Coming to the PC didn't suddenly make that wreck any better, either.

"Great concept BUT." That's LA Noire and Alan Wake in a nutshell.

From Remedy:
Just a quick unofficial update for the peeps here:

We've been doing minimum spec testing and currently it looks like we need to rule out all DX9 SM3.0 cards - the game hasn't run acceptably on single one. But then, these cards are from 2005-2006. This means it'd be DX10+ GPUs only (even though the game engine is DX9SM3). Wake's performance seems to be pretty heavily resolution dependent - we really use the Xbox's EDRAM memory bandwidth pretty fully and this shows on the PC engine too...

Speaking on ATI terms, a 2900XT or 3870 will be ok for 1280x720 and anything higher will be obviously better. On NVIDIA terms, a 8800 GT is OK.

A Radeon 4350 on another hand is too slow. We don't have all the cards on hand to test, but I think the absolute minimum spec for 1024x768 and "low" quality settings (and assuming a good CPU) is:

From ATI: R 3650 / R 4450 / R 5550 / R 6450
From NVIDIA: 8600GT / 9500GT / GT120 / GT430 / GT520

Anything "higher" in those series and you can start to scale up resolution and/or quality.

But again, we haven't run the game with all these cards yet and it's a combination of OS/GPU/CPU so YMMV.

I remember a few years back they showed off a really cool demo (in-game demo?) displaying the power of quad core's on the game...they showed a few tornadoes spinning around the main character destroying a lot of the objects and terrain around it

hopefully the game will be priced around $35...with both DLC's included it sounds like it could be fun

I hope you know what you're "in" for.

Bought the Collectors Edition @ launch after eagerly awaiting the PC release. Enjoyed the hell out of it, but never got to finish it due to my 360 tanking. After I got a new 360 I had lent it to a friend who ended up getting candle wax all over the disc.

I'm looking forward to finishing it + DLC. I hope that it runs smoothly and looks good, and judging by what they've said I think that'll be the case, at least on a higher end rig.

I think Remedy has been pretty straight forward and honest about everything so far, and the fact that it's self published means they WANT to make the PC release. They probably didn't want to make it 360 exclusive to begin with but I know if I were them, being a smaller studio, I wouldn't turn down MS's $$$ either.

I just hope this game isn't full price. From what I read, it says it's being self-published by Remedy on Steam, so does that mean it might be cheaper? $30, considering it includes both DLC packs?

Agreed. PC Gaming Elite Master Race. ;) Sometimes I feel like certain people would rather play a pile of shit as long as their told it was "built from the ground-up for pc" vs an actual good game that was ported over from a console.

Yeah. The amount of bitching from the PC community has only gotten worse. I love H, but this place is a breeding ground for elitist pricks.

Hmmm. $30 for the whole kit and kaboodle...I might even try that.

When I last tried this game, I admit that I tried it when I was having some personal stress going on so it may very well have tainted the entire experience.

I'm willing to give it another try under the right circumstances.

The thing is, it's 20 bucks new/18 bucks used at Gamestop for the 360 version. And each DLC is 7 bucks, but this would be put through Steam and they are publishing the game themselves. So taking out the middle man between them and Steam, it would sound right at about $30. So basically $20 for a new copy, without DLC and then each DLC would be about 5 bucks.
