Battlefield 3 General Discussion Thread

Sounds like a console review and they only had Metro, which sucked.
Anyone who only played Metro got the wrong impression of the game.

I think DICE has made the right decision by focusing on PC with this game, it's hard for the console crowd to adjust to an unforgiving type of gameplay.
BC2 on PC out sold consoles and BF3 will do the same.

Not understanding all the hate the beta seems to be getting at the moment. Sure its buggy (mind you, I'm hard pressed to remember a single Battlefield release that wasn't buggy at launch), but holy crap did I have fun. As a long time BF fan (1942, 4+years of BF2 and BC2 for over a year), I couldn't be more stoked for BF3 after playing - and consequently getting hooked on - Caspian all weekend long. Scale of the map was perfect, sound of the jets/helicopters flying overhead is amazingly immersing, guns feel and sound great!

I wholeheartedly agree.

Aaaaaaaaaand withdrawals have set in. I want my BF3. :(

It was sooooooo fun! :D

I agree. The gf wasn't home with me tonight and usually I take that opportunity to geek-out. After being spoiled by BF3...I just said screw it and watched a movie :D

4. There should be a tuturial to teach everyone to constantly hit the Q button to mark the damn enemies. If you have problems identifying enemies, hit this button often, and if a mark goes above their head, shoot them. I actually shoot everyone just in case though personally.

That alone makes a big difference in how the game goes. A team that is diligent about spotting enemies has a distinct advantage over the non-marking team (maybe too much, even). It is especially frustrating when people don't spot tanks and APCs - I can understand individual soldiers in the heat of batttle, but you can spot tanks (and helos) from halfway across the map.

I'll admit that by the end of the beta I was ruthlessly exploiting the shoot through rocks phenomenon by marking a guy, throwing a few rounds his way to make him duck behind a rock, then killing him through the rock by aiming just below the spotted marker. Good times.

I forgot where I read this but there will be no SDK release for BF3. Meaning there will be no mods or possibly even community made maps in the future. I guess we are at the mercy of DLC from Dice and EA. Which is pretty damn sad considering this is PC gaming we are talking about

DICE never made mods tools official for any version.
Can't see how you were expecting something that was never there.
He has good stability but poor alignment towards targets. There's a pilot I know that is better at aligning the gunner at targets, which counts more then fancy hovering skills.

Since we're on the topic of flight. I'm wondering if there will ever be actual ejection animations? If not why not? I understand that it would be inconsistent with the way we seemingly teleport in and out of vehicles. I guess it's just wishful thinking, would be cool though.

Yeah, the shakes started early ;)

Played some BC2 last night with the clan, fun and runs like a bat out of hell in comparision to BF3 but I'm getting tired of the same old maps, BF3 was a refreshing change

Looking forward to the 27th, I have The Witcher 2 to keep me going in the meantime. Been meaning to play it for ages now

i'm referring to their past stance on realising a SDK for BF3. Dice/EA initially stated that there will be a SDK avaiable. Although, they are now saying they will not include it even after launch.

edit

looks like they are stil considering it...
[Mod tools won't be in Battlefield 3 when we ship it, but I can say this – we have heard the community loud and clear. We are talking about it in the studio. I'm not promising that we're going to do it in any way, but we have heard it, and we'll see what we do in the future. Read the Rest...

Extra animation will prevent bails near ground. Most people would bail before the heli/jet is under 25% in fear of dying with it.

Well it would be a welcomed edition, but not until all the DLC is rolled out. Hopefully it's free like they did on BC2 for PC players and only charge for expansions.

That would make for a nice jet unlock!

I gotta say I'm kinda miffed at the armor jets seem to have at the moment. I actually landed a shot on a jet trying to strafe my tank and all it did was disable the jet. That fucker should have been a fireball raining down...

Didn't they say they had disabled some of the destruction stuff in the beta? Thought I remember reading that somewhere...

Gotta say that I fully enjoyed my time in the Alpha and Beta tests...cant wait for the retail release for the new maps and bug fixes...

I miss you EOD bot......

I remember seeing that they disabled a lot of things, not sure if some of the destruction was part of that or not.

I really enjoyed the alpha and beta as well, and honestly I'd have to say I've had more fun with this game so far then I've had with many games I bought after they were released.

I was a huge fan of BF1942 but never got around to the BF2, not sure why, but much of the hate heaped on this beta seems to be of two varieties, first is the "OMG there's bugs in the beta" to which I respond, yeah no shit, that's why they have a beta plus the reality of it is that during the alpha and beta while a few bugs did crop up for me none of them were more then minor annoyances and without any game breaking ones that makes this beta more stable then a large percentage of the retail games to hit the market.

The other group complaining seems to be those, that for whatever reason, EA wouldn't be able to please no matter what they did, you know the type if EA sent a blonde over to blow them while they played the game they would complain because they like brunettes.

I enjoyed BF1942 and was a huge fan of BF2. I've been gaming for a long time but I am not an expert on the audio/video details of the games I play. I just like them or I don't.
I'll admit I was very excited about this game coming out. I have not played BF2 over the last couple of years very much and missed it. When I pre ordered BF1943 for PC I was already well over do for a BF2 experience with destructible environments. I was crushed when my pre-order was cancelled. Then came BFBC2. Excited again! Got into the Beta for PC and PS3, bought it for both. It was fun, but for some reason I could never get into it. It is enjoyable when I play it, I just never seem to want to.
I read a lot of negative comments about this beta. I may be one of the odd ones, but I liked it a lot. I got up two hours before work a couple of days to play it. There is only one other game I ever do that for. It seemed to run fine on my system and looked wonderful. On my second day I started running into the graphical glitch with the sinking. Annoying but something I assume can and will be fixed. The problem occurred less to me on the last day, but I did see it a couple of times. Now that the beta is over, I miss it. Actually fired up BF2 in an attempt to scratch the itch. Will definitely keep my pre-purchase and am buying a copy today for my brother-in-law to play too.

I like they part where they killed almost no one and just joy rode around the map for 10 minutes.

I've caught myself doing that a few times as well, but if you try and stay in the areas that people are actually fighting in...you almost always get shot down instantly.

That kind of flying was kind of necessary in the beta where you had jets chasing you around for their free points and engineers dying to test out their shiny new toys.

Seemed like if anyone so much as flicked a booger at the chopper, it went down in a blaze of glory. I really hope they make it a little more durable, or a little more powerful against ground targets. At the very least I hope jets don't actually make choppers do an involuntary barrel roll with one small burst from their guns.

I've been wanting to ask this for awhile. I started PC gaming with the red storm series. Rouge spear, Urban Operations, etc.

In those games, running around like a chicken with it's head cut off meant you got to sit and watch someone else play most of the time. Run and gun was viable for short stretches, but in general you were pushing up daisies in short order. Where does the camper hate come from?

For example, lurking in a spot you know attackers will be going through, then exploiting their lack of proper room clearing.

Is it the slowdown it introduces?
Lack of teamplay making proper technique harder/impossible?
Respawn causing a no death penalty attitude?

People cry about "camping" for various reasons as you stated. The most common reason people dislike it for Battlefield games is the fact that its a capture/destroy the objectives type game so they feel people hanging back and just sniping are not doing their fair share for the most part.

Personally, I don't play Battlefield games to win the round but to survive the round. My version of winning is having a 2:1 or greater K/D for that round. Its how I have always played the Battlefield series since 1942.

BF is a team game. If your team doesn't win, you don't win no matter your ratio. Only caring about stats is silly. I suggest another game where you can be a rouge all day long.

While I mainly care about the team winning as a whole, I judge effectiveness of myself and others based on their K/D ratio as well.

How about no? I paid for my games. I'll play them how I see fit (sans cheats/hacks of course). People getting butt hurt over losing a round in BF games are just looking to scape goat others whose play style they don't agree with.

This is true, whatever dwindles the enemies tickets faster and sustains friendly tickets longer is the name of the game. Well, for conquest anyway.

Point Defense. I consider that a valid team contribution.

And I'm not talking about a lone wookie on a hill here. I'm talking about a team, with a specific objective. In the bf series, taking and holding a point. You do that, and people Quickly start hollering about campers.

Games themselves, it seems to me, are designed in such a way as to make camping as difficult as possible. It's very hard to get yourself in a situation where you can defend a single approach. In fact that's one of my hopes for the destruction mechanism. So whoever designs structures can get away from every room having two doors. If a wall can be a door at any time, you can design more realistic structures. I've never lived in, nor seen a house where you can navigate 90% of a floor and never set foot in whatever central corridor they have.

I fully endorse smacking people when you have a team full of snipers in an attacking role.

This is my big problem with the BF series, it seems I am always on a team with a bunch of snipers who only care about their K/D. Very rarely do I ever get in a squad with people who work together.

so i've played bf2, 1942, bc2, and bf3beta (though not too much since i've been busy and only got up to rank 17)....and i still suck horribly at flying. granted i didnt spend too much time trying because in-game, its a personal choice of mine to NOT fly and waste a helo for the team.... anyone have a flying for dummies tutorial for me? pure k+m here with no joystick =[

when i do i always get a few meters and die

I got very good at the choppers in desert combat with a, dare I say it, xbox 360 controller.

Did you know you can do a backwards loop in those things? Barrel rolls too. That used to flip out anyone who rode with me.

I found that the only real use for a sniper should be in conquest. I managed to single handedly hold off squad after squad trying to re-take a flag. I'm not talking the spawn on the beacon on top of the tower sniper whores but a sniper that moves around with cover defending a flag while the rest of the squad can cap another one.

The problem that you're gonna find on 64 player games is this: 10 are on the launchpad waiting for a plane. 5 are flashlighting each other for grief. 13-15 are doing the objective, and 1-2 are AFK.

Its like FPS + WOW Raids. If you can get a competent team of 32 vs the same, it'll be a helluva lot of fun. I suspect you can't get that without passwords and a lot of effort.

Bans are going to be handed out in large amounts from a lot of servers tired of jackoffs waiting for a jet so they can make a Youtube video.

Yeah I get VERY tired of being stuck in squads with nothing but snipers who never leave the spawnpoint, unless it's to run further back away from the enemy. Squad spawn is useless if your entire squad never leaves the spawn site.

I was on metro server on Sunday where 9 of the 16 players on the team were camped out in 3 different clusters around the spawn site and trying to snipe, and this was when we were the attackers. WTF?!?!
