Battlefield 3 General Discussion Thread

BC2 seems cartoonish after the BF3 Beta. I rather wait until the 25th.

Yeah, it was very cruel ending the beta with two weeks to go until it's released, and although I don't look forward to having to grind out the unlocks again at least it will be for the last time (until Battlelog or whatever it's called shorts out and resets everyone to lvl 0.)

Not a short barrel on a tactical shotgun.

Plus those little things called ballistic plates. A slug CAN NOT penetrate level 4, period, let alone buckshot.

There's a reason we use rifles.

energy shouldnt be much different for the first......100 yards on a decent slug, their muzzle engergy will be ALOT more but the poor balistics make it really start to tank after 100 yards

you get into the hot sabots and at 100yds they have way more energy than .223/5.56, in fact at that point its pretty similar to 7.62

a rifled shotgun barrel + a sabot, is pretty much a rifle anyways :p

here is a hot slug http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/37896-5.html
Muzzle energy: 3014 ft/lbs.
Energy at 100 yards: 1219 ft/lbs.
3" groups at 100 yards with a nonrifled barrel they say
I wouldnt discount a round recommended for bears

for comparison here the hottest .223/.56 nato I could find on the same site:
http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/AMM239-5.html
Energy at 100 yards: 1010 ft/lbs
Energy at 200 yards: 780 ft/lbs
Energy at 300 yards: 593 ft/lbs

there are many reason you are carrying rifles instead of 870's, but stopping power is NOT the reason.
for example
accuracy over 150+ yards
ammo cost
ammo count
magazine size
recoil

I can't view the link from work but I would assume two things, firstly the 3" group would be best case, such as the gun locked down to a bench which of course give a much better result then hand firing. Second it's unlikely that 3" grouping was from a short barrel tactical shottie.

I'd very much like to see where you get your information. I've penetrated an APM2+ SAPI plate currently issued in OIF/OEF and a 12-gauge slug sails right through it at about <50m.

It will also go through the IOTV/SPCS kevlar most of the time under about 25m.

At about 20m or less, the slug will go through the entire armor assembly about 50% of the time.

Even if you do not achieve penetration, you're going to get the ever living shit knocked out of you, breaking several ribs, probably rupturing internal organs, just the kinetic energy involved is going to mess someone up.

Oh I wish I'd taken some video of those shotgun fletchette rounds my friend had, that shit was inaccurate as hell, but wow, punched through a SPCS' kevlar, TWO APM2 plates and the wood holding it up.

Oh battlelog is down for me. I cant play BF3.

It's called backups.

Yeah I know but facts like that wont get emo rage flowing. lol!

Uninstalled beta and its still showing up under my games in Origin....

Same with the Alpha last I checked. Maybe Offspring can provide some insight to this. I would love to know why the games aren't going away.

I would assume they will always stay there, and before you freak out and start another round of emo rage against origin please note that once something is put on your game list for steam it stays there as well.

Yeah the ranks in the old Battlefield games reset all the time right? BATTLELOG IS SO DIFFERENT OMG.

Pretty sure they can penetrate a face just fine.

It would be very nice if they released a demo. I played the bf2 one so much and I bought the game because of that one. I think I'm still going to wait a little and see how the release goes.

No option in game for directional sound.... You just get good directional sound with you choose the headphone options. I'm using a sound blaster X-Fi with CMSS 3D enabled. My headphones are Sennheiser HD595's.

Do you think the directional cues are better with headphones enabled? I do. Also, I would recommend CMSS 3D disabled since it kills fidelity and the software seems to be doing a good job with positional on its own.

i agree, and feel that way across the board with video games. CMSS makes every game sound like shit through my headphones. i didn't find directional audio cues in BF3 to be significantly better with the 'headphones' options selected. it did however seem like distances were projected better (i.e. how far away that weapon fire is, etc). also certain sound effects were toned down a touch so they weren't so harsh on your ear drums.

Music sounds WAY better with cmss3d disabled, but in games it DOES give you better directional sound, but yes quality of sound quality is lower.

APM2 is 30-06 AP M2, which has 2720 ft-lbs@muzzle, 2350 ft-lbs@100y. If a shotgun slug is penetrating Lvl IV, then it's a specialty slug, I have never heard of it running through IV. Soft armor, sure, but not Lvl IV plate. The nice thing is that plate spreads the energy out, it would knock you on your ass and hurt like hell, but not disable you.

There's a great video of a soldier getting hit with a 7.62x54R, he gets knocked down and gets right back up.

A 3" slug has 3100 ft-lbs of energy leaving the muzzle, 2500 at 25yards and it drops off from there quickly. http://www.federalpremium.com/products/details/slug.aspx?id=134

Now what you're trying to tell me is that a slug is going to be able to penetrate Lvl IV hard armor plate while a 7.62x54R at 3000 ft-lbs at the muzzle, 2595 @ 100y is not? The sheer size of the slug is going to spread out the energy even more.

Are you sure you weren't shooting Lvl III+ plates?

I am disappointed in the destruction 2.0. I didn't see a single building collapse in the caspian map. Oh well, game is still very fun.

I was hanging out at hilltop one game, hiding in the corner of one of the building because I knew there were some bad guys behind the building (and I was going to pop them when they came around the front to go to the flag). Somehow they knew I was in the building, and instead of charging, they set C4 on the back wall of the building, where I was hiding, and blew it down, killing me in the process. I thought that was pretty excellent use of destructibility.

Ive got to be honest, the plane flight controls work suprisingly well with a mouse + keyboard, im practically an ace pilot with them, haha it's great.

im disappointed that the beta ended before i got my heat seekers though :|

The building at the Hilltop flag did in fact collapse completely to rubble. There was one more building off to the side of the Gas Station flag that also collapsed completely, but I do believe it was the same model as the one on Hilltop.

I too would like to see more destruction, the buildings at Checkpoint on Caspian map would have been perfect.

What disappoints me about destruction is that the tank still loses the tank vs. tiny tree battle.
Agreed. A tank maybe should get stuck on a concrete barrier, but no tank should get stuck on a fricken tree.

that pissed me off when i was in the tank. i thought the telephone pole would break and i would be on my way.... turns out that the tank came to a dead stop on that telephone pole.

How about those little metal poles holding the gate up at B/Hilltop?

i dont think i ran over those.

the other thing i hated was being ejected from the jeep when you hit a bump too fast or too hard.

What can you do to get better at this game? I know, practice, but while you're playing and practicing what things can you do? I get frustrated playing. I went back to Bad Company 2 today, and I have such a hard time getting kills. Either I run around and don't see any one or I get killed by people I don't see. A person just can't check all of his "6's" at once. I've tried being cautious and moving to cover, and I've tried running to cover and hope I get there. I don't want to be a person who lays on the ground in one spot, but I'm not so sure it wouldn't be more effective. I've always thought Battlefield was a better game than the Call of Duty games, but I'm not so sure that I may not be better in COD. I played the Black Ops multiplayer when Steam did the free weekends a while back and although I wasn't great I did have better luck in it than I do in Battlefield games.

Aside from practice? I would say playing with friends, with voice chat, is the most important thing.

But yeah, tons of practice.

The best thing you can do is not be a lone ranger. Join a squad and stick with them. Drop ammo and/or ed packs for your squad and teammates. The longer you can keep your squad mates and teammates alive, the longer you can stay alive and the longer you can stay alive, the quicker you'll learn how to effectively play the game.

Are you talking about the one right at the bottom of the hill at the Antenna?

The lack of a commander and the different squad system I think contributes to the team play issue in BF3 64 player conquest. BC2 with 32 players and smaller and more narrow map setups served to alleviate the problem.

Because you can squad spawn on anyone, squads can become very split up. This might be further compounded by the issue of mobile spawn points. Without a commander there is also no real overview of the battlefield. The lack of a detailed spawn map doesn't help in this regard either.

I wonder if a simple change of forcing squad respawns to be on the leader only (in conquest) if he is alive could make a big difference.

I enjoyed my two weeks playing the beta. There were some problems, but overall I enjoyed the experience. Couple of points:
1. I think the match making system needs some tweeks.
2. Flashlights are OP
3. Shotguns after a certain point are OP
4. There should be a tuturial to teach everyone to constantly hit the Q button to mark the damn enemies. If you have problems identifying enemies, hit this button often, and if a mark goes above their head, shoot them. I actually shoot everyone just in case though personally.
5. The caspian map should be like 96vs96 or something. Also any moron taking a vehicle without a passenger from the spawn area should be immediately killed and lose a level, unless all the morons at the spawn area refuse to get in said vehicle because they are waiting for a plane or something...

Didn't they say they had disabled some of the destruction stuff in the beta? Thought I remember reading that somewhere...

Gotta say that I fully enjoyed my time in the Alpha and Beta tests...cant wait for the retail release for the new maps and bug fixes...

I miss you EOD bot......
