Battlefield 3 General Discussion Thread

Well I'm not going to lie, I need a fix of BF3 BC2 just doesn't cut it anymore...so...well played EA well played.

Here's the lengthy cancellation process of the Origin BF3 order - and I quote...

"Hi, my name is Ankur. How may I help you?
Nathan: I would like to cancel my BF3 pre-order
Ankur: Okay please let me know your order no.
Nathan: ###########
Ankur: Please wait.
(about 20 second wait)
Ankur: Your order has been cancelled cancellation no. 296429900
Nathan: Thank you, will I get a confirmation e-mail with this number?
Ankur: Yes.
Ankur: Is there any other query for which I could assist you today ?
Nathan: No thank you - thanks for your help
Ankur: Thank you for contacting EA customer support. Good bye."

Now THAT was easy. $42 is a great pre-order deal for a game of this magnitude.

Today's great news:

-No in-game VOIP
-One character name per account/game
-No Battlerecorder for competitions
-They are "trying" to provide full joystick support
-You can only create squads in Battlelog, in game you can basically only switch squads.. but talking amongst the new squad probably won't have VOIP.

Can't find that anywhere on the blog. Mind linking?

Well now, things have gone from bad to worst and it looks like we are in for a BFBC2 repeat. I bought after playing the beta BFBC2 and regretted it, cancelled my preorder after playing the beta for MoH (2010), afterward bought it for discount and found that it was still bad and now the BF3 beta has come and gone. While showing promise it was buggy enough to kill enjoyment, the lag on Caspian alone made me sick (like motion sick) and now this interview. Starting to feel like I should cancel my preorder until they have the game fixed 3-4 months down the line and then buy it at a discount like they did for BFBC2.

I don't understand how people would be turned off from BF3 due to bugs in a BETA, its not a demo. Sure, I could understand if people didn't like how the game looks/plays but cancelling preorders based on beta bugs is a bit extreme for me. I found plenty of Caspian servers with no lag so I'm not sure if that will be a big issue in the retail game.

In the end, everyone who has played a Battlefield game from the release date knows it takes DICE a couple months at least to polish up all the issues. Its been that way for almost the entire series and I doubt it will be any different with BF3.

So? Does that make it OK or acceptable?

Pathetic excuse.

Not sure if I'm going to cancel. Having a blast playing BF2, although most of the servers I play on are already migrating to BF3. I'll most likely end up getting BF3 when most of the issues are ironed out which seems to be early 2012

It is about expectations.

BF games have not historically had smooth launches. Yet if you had a favorable impression of the previous games, it doesn't make sense to dismiss BF3 for potentially having the same issues.

If on the other hand you did hate the previous games, than I'm not sure why you would be interested in BF3 in the first place.

Pretty much everything Dethred said is true.

AND on top of it, now commo rose might not make it in for launch even though K.M. Troedsson said it would.

Holy fucking failblog, one characrter per game? ugh. I don't mind no in game VOIP, I use TS, Vent or Mumble. Joystick support is a big deal for the Jet whores not so much for Heli users. Squad management ? argh, so much for beta it was more like a demo of things to come.

Yeah I'll be still buying it (I guess) lol it's just reading these blogs and reports makes me cringe inside

It also depends when they started playing BF2 also.
If they didn't start playing BF2 day one, then it's expected for them not to play BF3 day one.

Some people are just optimistically cautious and others are confident in DICE will deliver.
Just because they say it not a day one purchase, doesn't mean BF3 is lesser to them. They wasn't going to buy day one anyway, no matter how good the game is.
Could be a money issue or they aren't comfortable with buying a product with flaws.

They'll all come around when the game is $25, and would perceive themselves as geniuses for waiting until all the bugs were fixed.
The day one buyers would have already logged 200+ hours and unlocked everything, so be ready to spoil their experience when they do arrive.

If you want to avoid early problems and wait for a game to mature, I think that is a fair and valid approach, and the individuals choice.

But it seems to me some people may actually be more along the lines of completely dismissing the game based on a potential buggy release. Yet if you liked the previous BF games despite this and still gave them a try, it doesn't seem to make much sense to me to outright dismiss BF3 for that reason.

For instance BC2 might be the "smoother" experience when BF3 is launched, but BC2 did not arrive that way. Expecting BF3 to end up being a much worse game because of this would be highly pessimistic given past history.

On a side note, what would be funny though is if their back end gets overloaded early on, and people start complaining that an in game browser would magically solve this issue somehow. Because in game browsers are of course immune to these issues :p

No, everything he said is most certainly not true. There's a big difference between features that are completely missing/broken and ones that may simply not be there at launch, which he conveniently didn't mention.

This game has the COD effect. People just want to play what's popular, what everyone else is playing so they feel included. The graphics is only going to carry someones interest so far.
When issues and adversity arises, they wait because they really did want to buy it anyway. If they think it's not going to live up to the hype, they'll wait until the game is cheaper.
BC2 in-game broswer was a failure on day one and the weeks after(and still is buggy), but many people didn't play BC2 day one to remember. ;)

GameSpy: When Bad Company 2 came out there were lots of issues with the server browser for the first few days. Do you think your beta testing will ensure that everything will work well on Day 1? Are you confident of a perfect launch?
Come on GS, this is DICE we're talking about.

There's only one studio building AAA FPS for the PC, and that's DICE. A game of this size will never be delayed over and over if they try to include everything at launch.
Many studios fail because they try to do everything at once, constantly pushing back game releases.
DICE set a date and it will be released on time, that's shocking in itself.

No, everything he said is most certainly not true.

I said PRETTY MUCH everything, and uhhhh, yes, it is.

When I play the game on October 25th there will be:

-No in-game VOIP
-No battlerecorder
-One soldier per account
-A decent chance there isn't proper joystick support
-A decent chance there is no commo rose

Missing = not being there at launch

Unless there's a new definition of "missing" in the English dictionary.

Should the game be delayed until those features are "guaranteed" to be present?

1. Don't care, I prefer to use my own - and I disable the in game one so I don't have to listen to pub players whine
2. Don't care
3. Really don't care, I only plan on using one soldier
4. Again, really don't care since I fly helicopters, not jets. My friend who DOES fly jets was able to use his joystick in beta after a little bit of tinkering.
5. Kind of obnoxious, the only valid complaint to me.

Only one or two of these issues affect the actual gameplay, and in really kind of a minor way.

When it comes to stability, I do not think that the community as a whole are giving DICE / EA the credit that they deserve based on the results of the beta. I downloaded the beta somewhere around 2.0 megabytes per second. The only connectivity issues I experienced were limited to occasionally being dropped from a Metro server at the end of the round and the same issue plus some lag on Caspian Border.

After the first day or two of each map being live, I was almost never disconnected from a server and the Caspian lag issue was addressed. I enjoyed fluid and consistent gameplay for 90% of the beta - which is absolutely astounding considering that some reports are claiming 12 million people playing simultaneously across the platforms.

Based on the results of the beta - I am very confident that the vast majority of players will be able to download, install, and play the game on day 1. Whether or not each and every little detail you dreamed of being in BF3 is actually there on day 1 is something else entirely.

Up to 12 million simultaneously? Amazing. I would like to see the link if possible.
All DICE needs is 30% of them or more to buy day one, and a large percentage of the others to come around over the following months.
7M+ copies this time next year is success in my book.

Are people still paying attention to zh1nt0?

Yes, he broke the oh so terrible news of Battlerecorder.

Wait....what?! Does that mean the retail client is still going to have the same shitty in-game squad management system?

I heard there was going to be a commo rose.

No no no. This has bee confirmed a while ago. There will be ingame squad management complete with locking and now being able to KICK players if you are the squad leader.

Yeah, we were discussing it a few pages back, I loaded up origin and clicked the chat button and told the rep I was interested in canceling and explained that reason was because Amazon had the game for $42 dollar and the rep canceled it without any issue AND gave me a code for 20% off any future Origin purchases.

The only drawbacks to the Amazon order, at least that I can see, is that you don't get the unlock package (I think it is called the physical warfare pack) and you wont get the game until 10am Pacific instead of Midnight.

As an Amazon Associate, HardForum may earn from qualifying purchases.
Meh, those aren't drawbacks :p Gimme $18 savings anyday of the week, will plough that savings into reserved slots for good servers!

Where? Did he get banned?

Also, may as well ask now rather than post again later - from reading your posts in the past it sounds like your username is more than just some internet nick and you've actually served. If that's the case, what's your take on the things like IRNV scopes and suppressors on M249s? I can't imagine them seeing a whole lot of use, or the suppressors at least, and I need reassuring that this stuff isn't just bling that's being included to steal the MW fanbase.

I mean, I'm no great gun novice (despite being from the UK) but it does trouble me a little seeing some of the weapon augmentations they're including in this. I'm not properly realism-obsessive about my games but you can only suspend your disbelief so far, right?

My biggest complaint about one char per is that my son wants to play, and I don't want him screwing my K/D ratio.

Quite, the opposite for me. When i'm visiting my brother, my nephew makes sure i log into my account so i dont mess up his k/d ratio in BC2. :D Thats old age for you, my quake twitch skills have diminished with age and maintaining a 2nd mortgage (my wife)

Im curious though, if you order from Amazon do you get the bonus maps as well for pre ordering?

nm looks like it does, nice deal

Don't get me wrong, my K/D isn't fantastic... I'm happy with maintaining ~1:1. I just don't want it to get worse!

In the UK ordering on Amazon you get Karkand Expansion and you'll receive a code to download the Specact Kit DLC. (Exclusive)

Shame we have to wait until the 28th here.
