Battlefield 3 General Discussion Thread

You do realize BC2 and BF3 use a different engine right?

Just because they change the name and make a few tweaks doesn't mean its a whole new game engine. BF3 looks quite similar to BC2. Not only that, I've noticed some structures (like the tin huts) in BF3 are exact copies from BC2.

This is true, but I always seem to end up on a team where my teammates take the jeeps and speed away alone while leaving the rest of us in the spawn.... so now we have to try and run 5 miles to help out.....

that annoys me. how hard is it to check the mini-map before you take off?

The actual problem is that stray bullet damage is lethal even from a distance. Also there is no reason to choose an ASR over a SMG since the UMP-45 just dominates in every way possible (short, medium, long). Don't even get me started with players one shotting with shotguns with a scope  (from a distance). IMHO, there should be restrictions on scopes for certain kits.

never been deer hunting during shotgun season?

of course, I have platinum on the 870 in BC2 from going slugging :)

programmer extraordinaire right here. you are right up there with the guy from on anand that called FB 2.0 a 'reskin'

Slugs and a scope should be allowed IMO... just makes sense.

Buckshot and a scope? Ummm... no. #youredoingitwrong

Ya, they completely tossed out all of the code from Frostbite 1.5 and BC2. Every single line of code is new for BF3. You have no clue what you are talking about nor how games are made.

never did I infer that. nice strawman though.

shows that you know exactly what you are talking about. there was talk about how the physics engine is entirely revamped, along with how polygons are being generated, and lighting is supposedly all new.

it would obviously be silly to toss out everything they learned in FB 1 and 1.5, and not reuse perfectly good codebase to build off of.

True. But the physics involved in BF3 are so out of wack it's retarded. A scoped 12ga using slugs has, at most, enough velocity to be terminal out to 100 yards. Not the "reach out and 50BMG touch someone" like it is in the game. SMG's are also way over powered.

But, meh, it's a game. Like, why have mil-dots on the scopes? Are they needed in the game? Nope. Bullets travel at the speed of light in-game on a perfectly flat trajectory. :D

Agreed, having been Marine Corps infantry, this kind of radio chatter would piss off everyone involved and you'd have the chain of command breathing down your neck in no time. On personal comms you might have a comment like....once or twice in an entire operation...Radio comms is WAY too important to be flooding it with nonsense like this...keep in mind, only one person can talk at a time.

And to whoever said give 20 year old men some guns and see what happens, these are not the 20 year old men that you see in your every day life....they've got a shit ton more discipline then the average young adult.

The chatter is funny but overdone...gets old fast and is just background noise now.

They are not supposed to flood the radio with superfluous nonsense. Do you think they really want to hear people playing beer pong over the airwaves in the middle of high risk combat situation? No they don't talk like that. Maybe in general but not through a comm system.

As to the radio chatter, I suspect that is to help in locating people. In Caspian I've been running to the next cap zone when I hear loud American yelling and realize just on the other side of a ridge or something is group of US infantry going to cap the flag I just capped. It's not very realistic but without it, it can be hard to even find an enemy.

Except it isn't deathmatch, so who cares about hundreds of kills besides people who want to camp anyway - BF3 is about objectives (at least for true BF players, not COD carryovers). Hotfoot it over to the contested flags and you'll get plenty of kills - and have a lot more fun to boot.

Very very true. Had tons of fun on Caspian and actually ended up #1 for my team with a K/D of 5 kills to 7 deaths. You get crazy points and therefore unlocks for doing objective work like capping and defending flags in addition to things like disabling vehicles etc. If I want a pure FPS I'll play counterstrike.

3.8ghz X4 95-100% use on Caspian. Bottle necking a single 570. Time for Intel...

It's crazy how much of difference there is in CPU usage between Caspian and Metro.

Q9650 @ 4.3ghz CPU Usage...
Caspian - 85% - 100%
Metro - 70 - 85%

gtx580 @ 1000mhz GPU Usage...
Caspian - 60-65%
Metro - 95-100%

I'm running...
1600x900 @ 100hz
ULTRA settings
motion blur 0/off
MSAA off
post AA on high

Metro I get awesome fps my min is at 75fps
Caspian, it's a different story, my min is at 42fps

I'm CPU bottlenecked on the bigger maps, also gets worse on caspian when there is 64 players compared to 32 players.

bf3cpu.png

2600k @ 4.5

Is that on Caspian or Metro?

You realize that's a model right? They can reuse models between engines...derp

On the flip side, being a programmer, frostbite 2.0 more than likely isn't a 100% re-write from frostbite 1.5. It probably got a lot of nasty stuff gutted and re-written plus new dx11 features. However NONE of us will ever know, since we do not have the code base. It's all speculation. But I do agree, bf3 plays a LOT like bc2...

This is true, but I always seem to end up on a team where my teammates take the jeeps and speed away alone while leaving the rest of us in the spawn.... so now we have to try and run 5 miles to help out.....

lol. True. Most people would just hop on a vehicle and speed off alone. Back in BF2, at least the group I used to play with would stop if they see any team mate near by. But here, everyone just head off doing their own stuff.

I get 90+% with my crossfire 6870's. BF3 really likes the Phenom II X6.

well, after putting in a bunch of hours in the conquest map....game still feels 95% like BC2 and nothing like the older games.

and wtf is with needing separate keys now for use/interact and to get into vehicles? I swear BC2 was not like that...that is SUPER lame and annoying. the one key was so simple.

and... 9 maps total?? that is it? Boosters/DLC to the max I assume.

OMG the positional audio with headphone mode is AWESOME! It is the best I've heard since CMSS with the X-Fi that I had in BF2. It really sounds like planes are behind you and too the left, ect. There is a definite difference between sounds above you, below you, behind you, in front. Even the ambient sounds are properly positioned. Very impressive.

System is an Ayre QB-9 USB DAC into Sennheiser HD600 headphones. That helps too!

Nice, That's good to know. Haven't tried headphones setting yet.

Ya directional sound is good in this game.

a good slug can reach out and kill deer to 150 yards or even more depending on the barrel being used.

people die easier than deer :p

Where do you guys seing this directonal sound option in the game? i never seen it :(

Is it connected to Audio cards?

This has been happening from day 1 for me. I've got used to it.

There is another one - when I spawn the screen is black and white

Amd card?

BTW, anyone think that the game s missing ingame contrast/color settings options? i dont want to mix up my color callibration in order to get non-washed out colors on Metro...

just like BC2, people used the slugs as sniper rifles and would just murder people with perfect accuracy from across maps.

In the Nvidia Control panel go to color settings and move digital vibrance up to about 60-65% it really adds that color the game is missing.... It makes greens look more green and dirt look more like dirt.

They're quite a bit less accurate than the bc2 version. I've scored some decent ranged shots with a scope, but they aren't instant death by any means. Snipers in cqb seem to be quite a bit more dangerous.

I already said, that i don't want to change the colors trough my video card, that way i'm losing my spectraview calibration, in game/program settings is fine.

Also where is directonal sound option in the game menu?

On one other issue, those F'ing tactical lights. Okay it's bad enough when an enemy blinds you with them but when it's members of my own team I wish FF was turned on.

Also why should a tactical light totally wash out anything it's pointed at? I noticed several times when a team mates light was pointed out toward one of the entrance holes to the subway kit would tend to wash everything out to the point that I couldn't really see much of anything.

Just as an FYI, I run an i930 o/c'ed and an ati 5970 push a 1920x1080 screen and have most of the settings on high but with a couple on Ultra.

No option in game for directional sound.... You just get good directional sound with you choose the headphone options. I'm using a sound blaster X-Fi with CMSS 3D enabled. My headphones are Sennheiser HD595's.

Whatever you do don't enable stereo mode. It takes up ridiculous CPU and should not have been included in the game in its current state. I played with audio settings last night and I can't hear a big difference between war tapes, high-fi and headphones. The biggest difference came when I disabled CMSS3D and EAX in my X-fi settings. Audio is 3x better.

I hope they adjust those. Playing in the middle of a bright day on caspian and being blinded from across the map just seems ridiculous. How powerful are these things? You should be required to have all your other slots 2-4 filled with replacement batteries.

I was also wondering what kind of batteries the military uses for these torches. Do they have a huge Lithium ion in their backpacks attached to their guns? That doesn't seem ergonomic. If the battery is in the light housing it self, then that is some amazing battery tech.

LMAO!

And half their ammo pouches as well! lol!

Yeah, between those and the laser pointers I have a feeling I'm going to need an eye exam before to long.

Sorry son, that's classified.:p

AFAIK, It's a lithium sulfur dioxide battery (LiS02)
But the military lights I have seen are not nearly as bright as the ones in the game...they certainly wont blind you in broad daylight from 250 yards....:p

i was crawling up over some rocks on caspian and was killed because of that damned flashlight. i thought i was looking into the sun... turns out the sun isnt as bright as those flashlights.

Not a short barrel on a tactical shotgun.

Plus those little things called ballistic plates. A slug CAN NOT penetrate level 4, period, let alone buckshot.

There's a reason we use rifles.

What is the kinetic impact of a 12ga slug? I don't think I'd want to take one, even if penetration was guaranteed to not happen.

Pure curiosity.
