Rage sucks

There should be a chat bubble above Carmack's head in the picture that reads:

"I would like to thank all of you here that helped me shove my penis into the backsides of all PC gamers!"

"Let's do this again soon, it feels good!"

Actually, id software is interested in making as much money as possible (since they are first and foremost a business). You don't do that by making games for just PC, or just consoles, or just phones - you make an engine that works on everything. PC gaming will never rule the roost again. Get over it.

I signed up just to sound off on this thread. What a bunch of children you are... I have met six year olds that have less warped worldviews.

Trying to get your money back from Bethesda because of day one bugs... is that seriously the guy who runs this website? Have you only been playing PC games for three months? Did no one here suffer through the first five or six versions of DirectX? What about random Dos4gw crashes back when Duke Nukem 3D was new? Remember the good old days when game crashes would hard lock the computer and then take two minutes to boot back up again? Oh, wait, back then even if the computer didn't hard lock you still had to reboot, only difference was you could do it with ctrl+alt+del instead of your reset button.

So a game has some buggy textures and drive profiles and cfg file fixes are already coming out to alleviate these problems. It runs silky smooth and is not demanding on your hardware. You can play through the game start to finish without getting dumped to the desktop - its not a good game, but I'm not sure how you could expect a good game from [id] these days anyway... there is a full decade between now and the '90s. You want your money back, even though you knew full well when you bought it you had no legal recourse to get a refund.

This 30 page temper tantrum from you guys is beautiful. I don't see why anyone would support an audience as vitriolic and unreasonable as you guys are. If I was a Battlefield 3 community manager, I would have gone on a shooting rampage at the nearest LAN party. If I was John Carmack, I'd use my next developer keynote to call out the "PC enthusiast" community for what they are - a bunch of bitchy, unreasonable neckbearded geeks, and then I'd make my next game a 2D Commander Keen sequel with the iPhone as the lead platform. If I was Gabe Newell, I would delay Half Life 3 another five years because this community simply does not deserve nice things.

But anyway...

yep...

+1

Damn, Kyle whines about everything. If the game doesn't make his free hardware fall to it's needs he crys for his money back. He did the same thing with Crysis 2.

Interesting.

Blurry Textures and Texture Popping
The texture streaming is limited by the performance and number of cores of the main processor (CPU).

The higher the resolution at which the game renders and the higher the anti-aliasing setting, the more texture data is needed to texture the environment. If you do not have a high end CPU you may momentarily see blurrier textures and texture popping when the view changes quickly.

If you have a processor with few cores and you have a high end NVIDIA graphics card then you can try turning on the "GPU Transcode" menu option in the video settings menu in RAGE. By enabling this option a large percentage of the texture calculations are moved to the graphics\ processor (GPU). However, this option is not available on all graphics hardware and may not appear in the menu if your hardware does not support the necessary features.

On processors with few cores without the ability to turn on "GPU Transcode" you can significantly improve the texture streaming performance by adding the following to the RAGE launch options in Steam:

+vt_maxPPF 16

The launch options can be found by right-clicking on RAGE in Steam and selecting "Properties". Then click on "Set Launch Options" in the dialog that pops up.

If you have very few cores like a dual core processor then you can set a lower value like:

+vt_maxPPF 8

If setting these values does not improve the texture streaming performance for you then consider lowering the anti-aliasing setting in the video settings menu in RAGE.

You may, for instance, observe slow texture streaming at high resolutions like 2500 x 1600 with anti-aliasing set to 16X. In some cases lowering the anti-aliasing to 8X fixes the problem but lower settings may further improve
the texture streaming. Alternatively, or in addition, you can lower the
resolution.

We hope these help. The teams at id and Bethesda continue to work solutions to help you guys. More to come!

Of course we remember how much tweaking it used to take to get a game to run... back in the '90s.

In your own words, there is an entire decade between then and now. Is it unreasonable to assume that a decade of technological advancement would lead to a more hassle-free experience?

Of course companies goals are to make money, I think everyone here comprehends economics. The problem is companies often alienate there fans in the process. Fact is, you come out with your product it better be as perfect as humanly possible. Otherwise your going to lose customers. People don't like paying money for a product that's half of what they expected and were promised to get. Maybe you do?.

You talk about "Going on a shooting rampage at the next LAN party" I don't think the community would support that either.

I have managed to get rid of most of the texture pop-in but the textures don't look all that good on a lot of objects, even with all the cvar tweaks.

While I understand that many people are having issues, I don't get the 'witch hunt' attitude. For the AMD/ATi owners: This is exactly why I avoid their cards. Too many times in the past have their drivers been horrible, especially in new games.

For the nvidia owners: try adding some cvars to your launch to enhance your graphics.

I guess I'm just lucky because I have zero issues with the game. In fact, I find it quite fun to play.

iD games have always had a console ( ` ), which just happens to be disabled by default, but that shouldn't deter 'real' PC gamers from accessing this portion of the game, let alone adding custom settings to the launch or creating an autoexec.cfg file to properly adjust their settings. Sure, the game is a port from console to PC, but should that stop you from exploring ways to fix this? No. You are a PC gamer, use your skills.

I don't really mind the lack of graphic selections in the menu because I use my brain, a little research, and the console to adjust my settings. (just like in quake, doom, etc.)

Here are my launch cvars:

+cvaradd g_fov 12 +com_allowconsole 1 +com_skipIntroVideo 1 +image_anisotropy 16 +image_usecompression 0 +g_showplayershadow 1 +m_smooth 0

Increases FOV to 87, allows console with ` , skips video intro, sets AF at 16, doesn't use compression, shows player shadow, and removes mouse acceleration.

I have very minor texture popping, so little, in fact, that I have to force it to look even remotely bad.

System, nothing special, really:
Core i3 550 Clarkdale
8 GB GSkill
MSi motherboard. nothing special.
nVidia GTX 570 1280 MB 320-Bit
1TB Seagate Barracuda 7200 RPM 32 MB buffer
32" LG screen

p.s. I think what really hits a nerve is the Witch Hunt going on here, when we're all computer geeks who have always encountered issues with games upon release, only to overcome these issues with feedback, community, and custom settings. Sure, you are validated for being upset, but don't let those emotions overcome your ingenuity.

+45,200 at least! Most of the "PC Gamers" in this thread wouldn't last a day in jumper-town with this attitude. How soon some of us forget the hours, and sometimes days it could take in the past just to get a game to run at all.

Could use a new thread for tweaking/fixing information probably. This thread sucks. :D

Actually, id software is interested in making as much money as possible (since they are first and foremost a business).

Too much desire to make money is called greed. Id's rush to make money has resulted in this thread bashing Rage, which will result in a loss of money through the loss of game sales. Id Software has also damaged its reputation, which will hurt sales of future games.

John Carmack isn't a business. He's a person who at one time wanted to make the best games. With his bank account now being fat, I'd think he'd feel freer to pursue excellence rather than anything that might appear to be greed.

It's true that PC gaming is now the stepchild of the video game industry, which is why we shouldn't complain too much when a PC game is nothing but a console port with a few extras glued on top. But, Rage doesn't even have extras, other than texture popping. PC gamers should never be reduced to feeling like a fat kid trying to get a date, happily taking anything they're given.

I don't think anyone expects their money back, but it sends a clear message. If PC gamers didn't complain, companies would just throw console junk over the fence, with no additions, for a few extra dollars. And, if it doesn't sell, they'll just assume there's no interest in games in the PC community.

What about random Dos4gw crashes back when Duke Nukem 3D was new?

I don't remember problems with Dos4gw crashes. But, I do remember DN3D and Doom ][ being light years beyond what was on the consoles of the time. Why in the age of Dx11 am I seeing Rage, with the new Tech 5 engine, using a tiny handful of straight lines to make round objects?

If I was John Carmack, I'd use my next developer keynote to call out the "PC enthusiast" community for what they are - a bunch of bitchy, unreasonable neckbearded geeks, and then I'd make my next game a 2D Commander Keen sequel with the iPhone as the lead platform.

Deviating a little off topic, but confirming that I would buy my first smart phone to get in on the ground floor of some new Commander Keen action. Finish the Goodbye Galaxy story, already!

to anyone who bought it,....suckers!

anyone who didn't....good man...see you on the Battlefield 10/25/2011:)

You've amazingly dismissed the entire situation with this game. Congratulations on your ignorance.

So texture swapping issues are related to # of cpu cores and resolution...their answer is to use command line settings and if that fails turn stuff down...great...apparently to some posters here we should shut up and stop bitching cuz day 1 bugs are acceptable. You can play all the way through to the end without crashing to the desktop so clam up. Seriously, is this what pc gaming has come too?

I wish I knew which situation you are talking about. I own the game and am having a blast playing it. It runs great on my gtx 570 without screen tearing (turned on vertical sync) and without texture popup. Amazes me people are flipping out about this game and its lower textures. The freaking models for the people are amazing!

Skyrim, because even though it may be dumbed down more from Oblivion at least the mod community will be there to make it better for us on PC.

Not directing this at you, but that topic always comes up and I don't see why we should let Bethesda off just because they release an SDK and have a good modding community.

To be fair to you, your choice of wording doesn't let Bethesda off the hook. ;)

Not really, just a bunch of butt hurt PC elitists that are mad that it doesn't push their systems, for most the other issues are minor, texture pop ins etc.

And kyle is still a little whiner cause his free hardware isn't being pushed hard enough.

I bought it because all of the videos showed fun FPS gameplay. I'm hoping to make best of my $42 investment & if changing config settings helps me get nearer to that goal, I'll go all out with it. I'm now waiting for id to release the super texture pack they've alluded to.
That's what I figured anyone that is [H] would be doing and not breaking a sweat. I'm glad there are still some left that remember PC gaming's origins.

CONCLUSION

Avoid gaming title with emotion or references to emotion in the title. (See: Crysis 2, Rage.)

***registers butt[h]urt.com***

Expecting anything amazing from a game developed to run on old-ass console hardware--and not just a game but a corridor FPS game--is for the lulz. Any by lulz I mean
You are correct. I fell in the trap that I avoided the first 2 times but Kyle keeps re-posting it like its something new and I get back to the same thread lol.

I used to think I knew and agreed with Kyle and Steve on almost everything but since their Crysis 2 rant, I don't recognize those guys anymore. No biggie though, just kinda sad. I still like their site and most of the info on it. I just now know not to take their opinions on gaming as much as I used to. But as far as pc hardware, rock on Kyle and Steve!

Of course we remember how much tweaking it used to take to get a game to run... back in the '90s.

In your own words, there is an entire decade between then and now. Is it unreasonable to assume that a decade of technological advancement would lead to a more hassle-free experience?
Easy, games aren't as simple as they were decades ago. Their complexity has gone up incredibly since then. So no editing a few files here and there when you need to should be no problem. If it is... well there's the door to consoles. I hear they cater to people like that.

The biggest mystery is why is Kyle having issues when others aren't? Especially those with similar system configs as him? I refuse to believe there are people out there that can tweak their systems better than him. Especially so much that what makes a game unplayable to him, is very playable and actually enjoyable for others.

I wish I knew which situation you are talking about. I own the game and am having a blast playing it. It runs great on my gtx 570 without screen tearing (turned on vertical sync) and without texture popup. Amazes me people are flipping out about this game and its lower textures. Then count yourself lucky and a part of a very small minority. Everyone else who fell victim to this mess is dealing with varying graphical issues that make the game near impossible to enjoy.

Of course the few of you singling out Kyle for some reason , just like always. Kyle is not alone with these issues , not even close.

People are flipping out because its consolized garbage. No video options other than resolution and AA which then requires users to create there own configs and edit settings through that when it should have been included in the full version of the game at launch. And further more people are flipping out because this is Id we're talking about , not some new kid in town. Id knows better and they released it in this state anyway , when I buy a game I don't expect to be spending hours trying to tweak it so it doesn't run like a slide show on my high gaming PC due to lazy programming.

People feel shafted because its $60 down the drain. Maybe you guys have lots of disposable income but many of us do not.

I hear even pirates are deleting their Rage installs and breaking their virtual discs in half! :D

im still amazed at how "unfinished" this game is every time I play it(in 30 minute blocks because it freezes up non stop). The textures really do belong in a game from 10 years ago. The engine is supposed to optimize for best performance, but no game this ugly should run at such a horrible framerate. With no aa, and 19x12, my 6970 is going from high teens to low 40's. Again, if the game had amazing graphics I could understand this, but it looks like a game from 2003.

Not even gonna touch the gameplay side of it... I was expecting a complete pile of shit play wise, yet it STILL managed to disappoint.

Not directing this at you, but that topic always comes up and I don't see why we should let Bethesda off just because they release an SDK and have a good modding community.

To be fair to you, your choice of wording doesn't let Bethesda off the hook. ;)

My opinion on this is that Bethesda with TES/FO have a very unique modding experience. With that in mind there has been specific efforts to facilitate this via technology and game design. As such the modability of the game should be looked at as strong point of the game. I'd prefer that Bethesda keep its games this way, focus on supporting this and a sandbox with which you can play with. Of course ideally you'd want a "perfect" game, but realistically that isn't possible. With that I prefer the focus and design philosophy being what it is.

I remember the topic came up about Bethesda using id tech 5 for future games because of how it would look better, and I specifically always disagreed with this. From what I understand id tech 5 is not conducive to the type of modding done in TES/FO.

Another funny thing. I watched while half the people bashed Crysis and the other half loved it. Then I watched while half the people bashed Crysis2 and the other half loved it. Then I laughed while they gave their reasons for it. Crysis 2 sucked because it wasn't demanding like Crysis1. Crysis 1 sucked because it wasn't optimized like Crysis 2. Half the people like Doom 3 and the other half didnt.

So when a game comes out and people argue about it, They just stick to one side of the arguments to prove their point. Not realizing there is a whole other side of the situation. But that doesn't matter the particular side they chose for their argument is the ONLY side.

You guys are a mess lol. Rage on! Let me know how those refunds work out for you guys. I wonder if they will allow you to post screen-shots. Actually you should take some and link to them in the email.

Textures look okay from a distance but not that good closer up. Also, the first bandit hideout looked horrible. Anyone else seeing this also after tweaking the game?

Anyone who defends the offenders of common sense game development.....

What do you want? Where is your motivation? To continue defending them....

I would much prefer they just stop making pc games when also releasing for console. I do realize this is a smaller market but come on. Fewer quality games as opposed to more crappy ports is fine with me.

This thread proves that PC gaming will die, if not already.

Who cares about texture pop-up? who cares about texture quality? who cares about tweakablity? who cares about the game is 21G? who cares about the graphic is 2007ish?

ONLY YOU, HARDCORE PC GAMERS!

Consoles gamers, on the other hand, have a blast with the game. It is a fun game if you are less nerdy (hence ignore all the above 'who cares' issues).

Then count yourself lucky and a part of a very small minority. Everyone else who fell victim to this mess is dealing with varying graphical issues that make the game near impossible to enjoy.

Don't confuse the vocal minority with the majority, as it happens alot these days. People who spent $60 on a game before it came out, before they read the reviews deserved to "lose" that money. In this day and age, you cant be that uninformed that buying stuff like this the day it comes out is a gamble. I mean seriously. Is no one going to take responsibility for that? All that credibility that you use to discredit the game, couldn't that have been used to wait before purchasing?

Game runs fine here, actually really enjoying it after about 2 hours this morning. Sorry but I think 90% of the issue are the folks that dont have enough processing power in their rigs. I've got a 4.7Ghz 2600k, 16GB ram and a well overclocked GTX 480 - ya gotta pay to play I guess.

Here is some info i found.

RAGE PC – How To Adjust Some Graphical Settings

Posted on October 4, 2011 by John Papadopoulos

PC gamers are right now disappointed with iD Software’s title as it doesn’t provide any in-game settings to adjust some of the game’s settings. Well, time to get excited because there is light at the end of the tunnel my friends. As with most iD Software engines, RAGE can be tweaked via the console commands or a config file, so keep reading to find out what can be changed at this point.

Although the console command gives a better idea of what the following tweaks are affecting, we strongly suggest creating a configuration file named “rageconfig.cfg” and putting it in “Rage\base\rageconfig.cfg”. By doing this, the file will be auto-loaded each and every time you start RAGE so you won’t have to type again and again those commands.

+set com_allowConsole 1
+set com_SkipIntroVideo 1

These two just allow the console to work and skips the logo videos.

vt_qualityhdplossless 1
vt_qualityhdppower 0
vt_qualityhdpspecular 0
vt_qualityhdpnormal 0
vt_qualityhdpdiffuse 0
vt_qualitydctpower 100
vt_qualitydctspecular 100
vt_qualitydctnormal 100
vt_qualitydctchroma 100
vt_qualitydctluma 100

These set overall quality level, lower on the HDP and higher (percentage) on the DCT with lossless support. (However the textures are what they are so you can’t expect miracles.)

vt_usecudatranscode 2

This is the CUDA function but 2 enables all of it not just smart mode.

vt_maxppf 1024
vt_maxlockedpages 256

These are what I’m struggling with now, a value of 2048 and 1024 respectively will cut down texture streaming to less than a second but will also cause possible glitches and stability problems so I’m testing various compromises here.(This is the number of paged\cached megatexture pages or what to call them.)

vt_pageimagesizeuniquediffuseonly2 8192
vt_pageimagesizeuniquediffuseonly 8192
vt_pageimagesizeunique 8192
vt_pageimagesizevmtr 8192

This is max texture resolution, again the textures are what they are and you can not get them to be better than that other than with some small tricks.

vt_minlod -1

Slightly negative LOD for a sharper image

vt_uncompressedvmtr 1
vt_uncompressedphysicalimages 1
vt_vmtrcompression none

Use uncompressed data (If available, it’s not.) instead of compressed and compression method. (Tab two times will cycle compression levels, that’s also how I found the CUDA = 2 thing.)

vt_maxaniso 16

Tell the megatextures to use full 16x AF filtering instead of 2x, sharper unless forced via CCC / NVCP already. Be advised that you might get artifacts with this value. It’s best to use 4 for 4x

vt_restart

Change anything with the virtual textures / vt and you’ll need to restart them, best is to execute the config (exec rageconfig.cfg for example.) in the main menu.

Additionally, if you want to change the FOV you’ll have to add the “+cvaradd g_fov 20″ command to the game’s launch options. By doing this, you are telling the game to run at its default FOV that is increased by 20 degrees. RAGE’s default FOV is 80 so if you add 20, you’ll get a FOV of 100. Feel free to lower that number to find your sweet spot.

Moreover, PC gamers can edit the “render_controls.xml” file that is located at the “C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\LAG\data\settings” folder. By editing this file, players can turn on and off SSAO, Depth of Field, and some other graphical options with simple true/false swtiches.

Also, you can try these settings from another source.

Is it true that the GPU Transcode option is nvidia only? if so.

I wonder if it is worthwhile to disable AA completely and use FXAA to free up performance since it is supported for OpenGL in the newer drivers. Obviously this a Nvidia exclusive option.

Then count yourself lucky and a part of a very small minority. Everyone else who fell victim to this mess is dealing with varying graphical issues that make the game near impossible to enjoy.

If it wasn't for ID, most of us wouldn't know what a config file is and how to tweak it/why to tweak it, at least in regards to gaming. So now, the company that introduced us to this is now the company we are despising for making us do it with Rage. Sheesh!
