Battlefield 3 General Discussion Thread

Oh boy, you guys better not say you like this game, your gonna start a shit storm from all the whiners.. :p

Wonder if they are gonna decrease the power of the ump when retail comes out.. Thing is like a rail gun. Specially when you have the irnv scope in the subway..

Bah, where's the list of [H] Origin players? Mine is USMCGrunt0307 if anyone wants to add me.

http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1634898

We've had some good games. Also try to get on vent, makes the game more fun when the squad gets broke up and we are all on different teams..

Me and bravo were trading kills most of the other night.. was definitely fun.. Cant wait till the [H] server is up!

Yeah I think the UMP is OP. So far I've gotten 3-4 more guns past it, but I keep going back to it.

Overall, i'm enjoying the gameplay as time goes on and I get more into it.

Here is what I don't like:

1. Inconsistent unlocks. I've been playing Recon, as that's what I enjoy, and I hate that I can get the 12x scope on the SV98 in 10 kills and 80 for most every other gun. I also dislike that there are 17 different unlocks PER GUN and most of them are fairly identical.

2. Handguns need to come up a bit in power (or other guns need to go down a tad).

3. Upgraded ammo for sniper rifles. Some I have to shoot 2-3 times and if the suppressor is on, it's 4-5.

I also wish they had let out more maps for the beta. I'd like to try 1-2 more out.

Speaking of sniper rifles -

Perhaps I just suck with the SV98, but I need to hit people 2+ times in the chest for it to kill, while I regularly die from 1 shot. Am I just getting headshot with it that often? :(

So what is the general consensus? I'm still on the fence about getting the game. My friend thinks it's amazing but he never played bfbc2 nor has he played any modern shooter since bf1942. I feel like from what I've seen its just bfbc2 with new graphics and guns. Am I wrong?

i've had good luck in killing people with 1 shot with the SV98. i'm only getting headshots every so often, most look like they're landing on the torso. maybe i'm finding people at partial health but it seems like it happens way too often for that to be the case.

I'm enjoying the Beta quite a bit despite the issues.

I don't mind Origin either.

and I'm growing to like Battlelog...

I must be one of the few judging by this thread!

Your not the only one. I love the game. Of course it has its bugs but they will be fixed eventually after the final release with patches. This is a great FPS with alot of unique features that I have always wanted in a game. I was one of the fortunate people who got to play the Caspian Border conquest map. This game has some serious potential. Operation Metro is a poor representation of the possibilities of this game. Origin or steam, who gives a shit. I just want to play this game and I will download whatever I have to to play. I could care less what information Origin gathers about my computer habits. Battlelog is great in my opinion. The matches load fast, the servers are easy to see and sort. All the statistics you could ever want are in one place. I like the integration of the platoon options. Joining a game with friends in a party while using a private VOIP is easy and worked great for me.

Overall I believe, in my opinion, that this game is going to be the best FPS after the final release and a few patches.

Ill only be using the SV98 to get my M40A5 (best gun ive ever seen/shot) unlocked. Once i get that they would have to nerf the damage on the M40 to 1 point per headshot to tear me away from it.

Overall happy with the game, and im even more pumped for release!

Yes. Played BF2, 400+ hours in BC2 - feels nothing like BC2 other than the fact they have the same game modes and similar art styles. Guns handle nothing, absolutely nothing, like BC2. Movement feels completely different as well. To me in an FPS, those are the 2 biggest things to compare games against one another.

Even just the variety of attachments and "perks" makes the game much more deep.

BF3 is not a true BF game, because it doesn't look like this:

I'm waiting to play Conquest before I actually make up my mind about BF3. I'm not a fan of the Rush gamemode and I flatout hate the Operation Metro map.

^ i always get nostalgic when i see BF2 screenshots. i went back and played a round recently, still good fun but dear god i forgot how terrible the hit registration is.

lol I just run and spam grenades.. about the only way to get a kill...

Actually thats one of the major reason that I dislike Battlelog. We're depending on EA's back-end system to be up and running for us to even see the server browser through our web browser. If its down, then you're screwed.

A traditional in-game browser would meant that the browser is always there in your game, as long as you can launch the game, you can see and use it to search for game servers.

An ingame browser still needs to communicate with EA's back end to receive and send information.

So handles in a good way or bad way? Can you be more descriptive? May help me decide if I want to preorder. :)

It took me some time to learn how to use it. I hated it at first, now I'm much better with it. Also seems that the straight pull bolt upgrade doesn't work as advertised.

I needed some time to get into it, learn what to look for, etc. I really disliked it at first and had no plans to buy it. After playing some more, I'm much more into it.

You're right; it feels much, much different than BC2.

I like the variety of attachments and perks, but I don't need 18 different types of magnification scopes for a single shot sniper rifle. The foregrips, bipods, suppressors are all great additions (though I hate the way you had to loadout the weapons).

something they should fix, on most guns when you equip the foregrip your character model doesn't actually use the grip. the only one i've noticed where you actually use the grip is the F2000.

It gives people the option to the use the type of scope/sight they want. The benefit isn't just being able to have a scope for every situation.

I've noticed that, as well.

I understand that. But when there is a 4x, 3.4x... i mean really? or a 7x and 8x? How about 3 different types of Red Dot Sites for one gun? It's a bit much.

Some people have picky preferences. For instance I'm not sure about the red dot, but the Holos for instance have different graphics, one which I prefer way more then the other. Same with the ACOG/PSO-1, I like one over the other despite the same zoom. The design of the scope/sight and the graphics affect people's choice as well.

They have a US and Russian variant of each scope zoom, which doubles the amount available. But they look different despite the same zoom.

Very good. The guns feel much better with recoil - it took me several hours of getting my ass handed to me until I got used to it. You're not going to be spraying with a PP2000 or UMP 2000 meters across a map anymore and taking out snipers; you probably won't even hit them.

The movement is fluid and really feels amazing. You interact WITH the map now, other than just basic ducking rocks. (Caveat: Yes there are some bugs here and some frustrations where it doesn't always work as intended. Overall it is very positive though.)Running across the map, smoothly vaulting over low fences, diving into hedges, etc - it just feels natural.

The map design also aids in this; it's not photo-realistic, obviously, but I feel the map design is excellent, particularly the level of detail. Bushes, hedges, rocks, it appears to be a naturally designed area, not some contrived area for computer players to run around and shoot each other in.

The game just feels "right" the way you move, fire, etc. To me, I can tell if I will like a FPS within 15 minutes - does moving my character and firing my gun feel weird, off, etc? I know this sounds like BS hype, but I fully expect BF3 to be the best FPS I've ever played.

It definitely has flaws, the beta particularly. Not being able to bind your mouse or manage squad in-game is frankly retarded; that being said it is still a beta and not game-breaking as such. Both issues have been addressed and should be fixed.

Sometimes on the map a rock doesn't let you jump up it correctly, or you don't vault over a fence on the first try. Pretty standard on any FPS you have some sort of issues, outside of a very simple Quake 1 style map.

IMO, Dice is pushing the boundaries of FPS MP gaming to levels never seen before, in mutiple areas. It hasn't been done before, so it isn't as though there is some "BF3 for Dummies" codebook that they can easily go off of. There will be issues, they seem to be committed to fixing them, good enough for me. A+ for the game so far, despite some SNAFUs with the beta.

Not being able to bind your mouse or manage squad in-game is frankly retarded;

i used my mouse software (razer deathadder) to bind keys to mouse buttons, like others have mentioned in this thread. at first my thinking was that i wouldn't go through the hassle since i'll be playing other games and the key bindings would interfere with them...turns out i've been on a BF3 binge so that's not an issue.

I'll have to do that; gotten used to using C but on mouse would be much easier (Razer Lychosis or wtfever it's called).

it's surprisingly easy in the Razer software. took all of 10 seconds and works flawlessly. now i have the prone button at my fingertips....like a scared little bitch.

You know what made me really excited about this part? When I came up to a chest-height wall, and I was able to CLIMB OVER IT. It's little things like that, that are really starting to set the gameplay apart. It's a small change, but an important one to the flow I think!

My biggest "complaint" is that hitboxes seem off, sometimes. It also takes a moment for it to register. I've hit guys at a run who take 3-5 steps before it registers, and they suddenly warp back to the spot they were hit in.

Overall, there are really just a few minor issues, like you said.

Wait, does the gun you are using affect the next weapon unlock? So if you use the SV98 instead of the SVD you will unlock a different path of weapons?

no, it's strictly based on class points. doesn't matter which weapon you use (including sidearms, grenades, c4, etc.) so long as you're earning the points using that specific class. also your end of round bonus points don't count towards your next unlock within that class.

each kit has a tier of unlocks, and each weapon has its own unlocks.

but I beleive kit stuff is related to experience with that kit, not the weapon you are using, while the weapon unlocks are of course weapon specific

Correct.

And you can see the upcoming unlocks on the battleblog.

Glad I'm not the only one who noticed that. I'm a little tired of getting one-shotted with it from 100+ feet away.

That's what I thought. It would be nice if you could pick the next weapon, like BF2. Not sure how useful the Stinger missile is going to be for the engineer, for example, so would like to avoid having to waste an unlock on that. Is there a weapon tree posted anywhere, that shows the unlock path for all the classes? All I've seen on battlelog is the next unlock (but I didn't look very hard).

I hate that gun, so much.

My second complaint is the LMG with bigger ammo drums. I sat and watched a guy unload for a good 20 seconds last night, no breaks, and he STILL wasn't out of ammo.
