TF2 "Mann-Conomy" Update.

So people complain about Valve adding too much to TF2, to the point where they'd rather play on vanilla servers. They also complain about how they add too little to L4D.

Never change, gamers!

I could care less. TF 2 died to me as soon as they added the RPG elements.

thats funny, i ignore all the extra stuff yet still get all the unlocks from just playing the game normally
i still dont see why ppl want to QQ over all the extras

All I've got to say is: HOLY CRAP THAT STUFF IS EXPENSIVE!

I was thinking maybe $0.50 - $2 but single items are going for $18. TF2 ain't serious business enough to be paying that much for silly items. Think I'll wait for them to drop.

Agreed, love this game so much, you don't like the extra shit, go to a vanilla server.

I don't think *anyone* that plays TF2 on a regular basis is seeing the Mannconomy as a bad thing. It's there for people that don't wan't (or can't) sink the time required to craft. And there should be an alternative avenue for those non-veteran players to get those items outside crafting and trading.

This month marks three years and over 1500 hrs I've been playing TF2. Still love it after all additions.

LOL at haitu's pic. While it's not as bad as the Fonz doing that, Valve certainly dug themselves a bit here. People are mega ragin that their pure company is going back on their word by selling DLC.

I find it hard to believe this wasn't part of some planned series of upgrades. Introduce desirable items like hats, make them the biggest grind in the world to get, and then put the same objects up for purchase later on.

Everyone is trying to get micro-transactions off the ground, I personally dislike the idea, I am never going to pay money for some digital item. If it introduces imbalance in the game then I wont be playing, if valve are avoiding this then good for them.

I don't play much TF2 now-a-days anyway, past the pretty colours and comical animations I don't think there's much of an actual game there.

That's all PC gamers do these days... complain and rage about anything and everything. After a while, it's just noise :)

I don't think you understand how it works. People with complaints are more likely to speak up than those who are content with something. When someone orders food at some place they don't go to the manager after and say "The food was good.", you eat it, and walk out. If on the other hand the food has hair in it, you might be more likely to complain.

That's why all you think you hear is raging and complaining. And when Valve already admitted that they're using TF2 as a platform for "experiments", there is likely a good chance there's going to be complaints. You want to find the people who like it? Play the game. Want to find people who don't like it? Discuss it on gaming forums, where there's probably alot of people who played said game but stopped due to various reasons.

The RPG elements are nonsense. The game is supposed to be "Team Fortress 2", ie a successor to the team based FPS Team Fortress Classic, not a team based FPS turned team based FPS pseudo RPG with an item shop. When I played and it was still classic, I did my best to ignore the mod servers, modified gravity, respawn, hats, etc. It was nice because it was probably 90% classic servers, 10% modded. Easy to find a low ping game with a map I'd want to play, now it's probably the other way around.

There is something to be said for "If you don't like it don't buy it." The game's still pretty fun, even though I'm fairly terrible at it.

That logic fails horribly. It's hard enough to try and take back a game you're not satisfied with shortly after buying it, but to take it back years later because you didn't know the developers were going to use it as a platform for experimenting is impossible.

So I can either go out in the real world and buy a real hat for $15 or spent $17 on a TF2 hat which is not real but gives me +25% health or something (pay to win)

One thing I always find great with these updates (not so much the class updates) is that when they release new weapons the drop system seems more likely to drop an old weapon for you rather then a new one, I've gotten 2 items in like 6 hours, a cheaters lament and a DH

Seems a long long time ago. The game was in a better state on release

I'll sound like a nostalgia fag but the best state of the game was the beta. On a good note I did get my halo so I can run around with that and my soldier medal on all DERPDERPDERPDERPDER.

Because ANY change, no matter how inane or wallet-plunderingly obvious it is, is always good right? Keep putting in your "micro-transactions" to play the game you already paid for, console mouth breather.

Do you even play TF2?

I think this is part of the decline from PC games to console games.

We don't have PC games and PC gamers any more, we have console games bleeding through onto the PC platform and bringing all the associated trash.

There's always bitching, PornoSatan said it very well, but on top of that we've also got a more serious community which has basically started a steady decline into a console orientated mindset where there's more dumbed down games, more money exploitation, less modding and custom stuff.

Bleh...not a lot keeping me in gaming right now I have to say, there feels like a whole lot less difference between a console game and PC game now, we've really sunk that far. TF2 is certainly no exception.

You're logic also fails horribly. You bought a game for $20 years ago, and are pissed that valve has continued to give you content for free? If it bothers you that much quit. I am sure you have gotten your money worth over the last 3 years. If you still want to play the original game just go play on a vanilla server, or better yet run your own server however you want.

Remember when TF2 was TF2? Good times.

Yeah, like up to two months after release.

I'd be indignant about this move because I don't care how they justify it, it's just more Valve marketing and their unconditional fans fellating them. But I don't care about Hats Hats: Hats any more.

You're making it out more than it is. I'm not stomping around daily with a chip on my shoulder about TF2, or phoning my local news station to tell them of these TF2 developments. I've already quit playing it. This thread just happened to pop up and is on the topic of the primary reason why (according to this thread) many people have stopped playing it. Relax.

Its amazing how ignorant and childish people get. If you want to go down that road of logic....you can still play the original game you paid for. Maybe its because I am an adult with a paying job but I cannot get my panties in a bunch over this update. The game was released in 2007 and has had strong support in patches and updates. I dont mind micro-transactions as long as it does not change the gameplay.

Who cares if someone can buy a hat or buy an item that is otherwise dropped in time? None of the weapons are really game changing. Its not like you can buy invincible armor and just carry the game yourself. TF2 has enough balance in the different items/weapons that it is going to make little difference. Add in the fact that at the core its still highly team based and any small benefit from an item is wiped away.

The only negative I can see is the dark and dirty road that micro-transactions can become. Where people can buy expensive game changing components or to enjoy the game you have to buy $X worth of items on top of the original game. I think companies like Valve understand that there needs to be a balance or at least I assume it.

I for one am hoping something like this does work and maybe creates a gold standard for how to properly run micro-transactions. I am not going to buy a hat $5 but I am sure there are people out there that want to. If that means I get more free updates and in return the people who want to shell out money for cosmetic items and items that are dropped, it becomes a huge win for me.

Only time will tell, but I have a sneaky suspicion that we'll be buying our flying mounts in TF2 at some point in the future :D

There are items I saw that are non-tradable and non-craftable. These items also have gameplay changing stats. There's a set for the sniper that when worn (or even maybe just in your backpack) makes your immune to headshots. Seriously? What do you think the odds are of these items dropping?

Rocket launcher that gives hit on damage done, etc. It's all nonsense. This game jumped the shark a long time ago.

Yes its the entire item set. Which means using a rifle that does not give headshots. And the knife that gives +25% fire damage to the sniper.

I really dont see someone who is wearing an entire set to be the deciding factor in a game.

The beta was far from the best version, extremely buggy and unpolished - but yeah less bloat.

Yeah fuck hats, hats are for women.

I went back to play real TFC. I been playing that a lot lately. It has real guns and no dumb shit like sandwiches or baseball bats. Conc jumping, bunny hop, conc aim, grenades. A game that requires actual skill to get good at.

If i want custom stuff, guns, models and what not. i just go download them and they work. i dont have to buy anything!!

I couldn't agree with this more.

Zomg real skillz.

Yeah but I had the most fun then :D. Some of the updates were good (Engineer, Demo, Spy, Pyro) and some were horrible with horrible unlocks (THE REST). It's just been hit and miss throughout this game's lifetime.

Honestly I had no idea TF2 was a RPG game
Then again I'm just a casual player:p

Personally I have no problems with free-to-play RPG games selling cash items for real life money, or even allowing in-game items to be traded with real life money. It happens anyway, legally or illegally.

But I'll reserve my judgement for TF2 for now. Its just a little hard for me to come into terms with, especially since I've always see TF2 as an online shooter, not a RPG game.

I certainly isn't going to pay for any ingame items here.

I guess its safe to say that some time in the future. these micro-transaction will be the norms for online FPS games then

Gaming just gets more and more expensive

So I tried the update when I got back from work, I'm running at about 70% CPU usage across 4 cores and 50% GPU usage across both GPUs and in game is only ~70fps and it feels like about 30fps.

Ugh...anyone else getting this?

Just one more thing that has always been hit or miss about this game. Performance after every patch. I'll try it for a bit when I get home if I have time.

Step 1: Collect hats
Step 2: ...
Step 3: Profit!

I didn't realize that crates could only be opened by purchased keys.. I assumed those would drop as well.

Wow now people can buy something that's purely cosmetic and doesn't effect the game one bit?!?!

OUT FUCKING RAGEOUS!!!

I don't get why people are upset. But then again, gamers seem to act like the end of the world whenever any tiny change happens. "Remember when TF2 was good and didn't have hats?" Grow up drama queens.

Some of the items, like weapons, can be purchased and do have an affect on the game.

And all of those are dropped as well. Buying is for those poeple that want instant gratification.
