Some of you might remember my super-ghetto monitor back light fix from earlier in this thread.

I got this monitor from the trash with a broken back light inverter.

So, is this more ghetto because of the Pringles, or less ghetto because there is no visible high-voltage?

very good sir

This is the best ghetto idea I've had in a while:

Ghetto water cooling system!

I got the idea from bong style/bucket coolers, and it works well! Fan on top is dead silent too. The pump sits on a sponge to dampen vibrations, which also works well.

ahah that reminds me of my high school passive cooling/reservoir bucket. I had the hot water pumped into a couple colanders and under it were tons of bristle brushes (toilet style) which dispersed and cooled the water(maybe). At the bottom of course was the submerged pump. Not sure how well it worked since I was just a high school kid messing around with shit over 10 years ago. A couple months later I had to get rid of it because my room was smelling like Water Wetter.

This is how you get a drive to work after you've accidentally broken the SATA connector off it. Worked well enough that I was able to clone the entire drive, which took about 5 hours.

Been there, done that. Eventually it needed to have the scotch tape replaced as it had lost all of it's sticky.

Yeah, I used to mess around with other ghetto water experiments. This one worked OK, the fan didn't really help dissipate any heat but the water stayed cold for a good while before the temps started to steadily increase. I ended up going back to my regular radiator setup, figured out how to mod my case to make it work. I'll post that one up later :).

Here is My Ghetto Mod!
Budget: $15.00 =P

Since these pics I have fixed up the wiring, but overall I was pleased with the outcome!

I wouldn't call that ghetto at all. You should post this in the case mod forum instead. Definitely looks nice.

Use some duck tape and you get more close to ghetto  ;) I think it's looking to nice to be ghetto.

It's high class ghetto :D Probably a solid 3 hours of work on that. Works great too, although I think I am going to modify it and put the shifter on the front part of the arm rest. Beats paying 400$ for a playseat, although i would love one but I am just not dedicated enough to sim racing to buy one.

A ghetto mod doesn't always have to look like shit. A cheap alternative to a commonly expensive solution is a ghetto mod in my book. The pantyhose fan filters a dirt cheap and they can look pretty nice.

The last 2 mods look pretty slick and still ghetto.

That is true, in this case both of these were on a ghetto budget but came out extremely well done. However with that being said, I believe the old food stamp system (that isn't really in place anymore) was based on how ghetto the result actually looked.

Anyways, to the two most recent: good work your time and effort definitely paid off.

Sand those down a bit finer, stain 'em, seal em, and they will look freakin' awesome.

or slap some fake carbon fiber or brushed aluminum sticky thingamajigs for the sporty look!

Yeah need to work on the aesthetics of it. Probably going to put a nice cloth patch on the top surface, the screws are pretty stripped out from screwing them in by hand so something to stop against scratches would be good. I did a little after cut sandpaper work on the edges, but I forgot to smooth over the scratches on the wood and drill holes.

I'd love to see the look on somebody's face who would otherwise have no idea what that is :p. Nice work though, that looks pretty clean.

I made the mistake of buying a Prudent Way power supply back in early '09, and when it smoked it took out my P5E-N SLI with it. I don't have the cash right now to get all i7, so I specced out and Newegged an Asus P6N, which will take my Core 2 Duo and DDR2..

During my initial P5E installation, I kinda broke off the Dimm sockets for the second channel, since I'd ran out of Lian Li standoffs. I didn't want that to happen this time, so I cut off the lid to a case of beer and submitted a requisition for my food stamps..

How do you break off a DIMM socket? Did the release pins not release?

Motherboard flexed due to no standoffs underneath... pulled off half of the pins of the socket.

I don't mean to nitpick but I would've tried holding the board down with a hand at least. Either that or you had a faulty board . Nice fix though.

With the board on the tray and the tray in the case, I could not sucessfully wedge a finger or two under the edge to support it during memory installation.

dumbest thing I've done since I got a snootfull of motherboard smoke - foulest thing I've ever smelled.

The case was originally a little IBM sff shitbox =P, one of those covered in plastic from 1999 cases..I cut out the front, and the top and took off the side panel. I painted it black Cutout some plexi and fitted it. Put it all together... Originally the case called for an SFX PSU but i already had the 1u so i modded it to fit.

Thats pretty sweet, any pictures of the building process?

I just moved my rig into an old Compucase I painted a while ago with spraypaint, I consider it ghetto since it only took a day and the paint cost 5 EUR. Anyway I just wanted to post it somewhere :p

not ghetto at all friend, great work tho :D

I thought ghetto means modding something old? That was an old Gateway 2000 case circa the year 2000. Thought that was ghetto and the parts are like not even pci express grade. Still sports an agp slot. Anyone have recommendations?

Thanks.

Not nearly enough duct tape and zip ties :p

Ghetto mainly means an extremely low/no budget modification using whatever you can find (as if you lived in a ghetto) and a very messy look. Cue duct tape, paper, rubber bands, etc.
