Arctic Cooling Accelero Xtreme 5970 now available!

In an earlier part of my life, I've worked on jet engines, diesel and gasoline engines. I've worked on hydraulic, pneumatic and for the last 20 years computers. I've never been instructed by any reputable company to tighten a device using an eyeball or 50% feel tight measurement. If their engineering was done correctly I would expect their documentation to reflect the same degree of professionalism. Now for those who sucessfully tighten their screws 50 percent, I wish you the best. If it's only 50 percent tight, then there's a 50 percent chance of them coming loose. Good Luck! My bet is with a manufacturer to designs things to hold together 100 percent!

Correctly engineered, the damn thing should have shims, spacers or whatever, and then tighten the screws 100 percent. Is that so damn hard?

Apparently it is and thus why this thread partially exists. It's still a FU move from AC to just coming out with a half assed solution, I really hope none of you buy this crap. 50% of tightening a screw... wtf does that even mean?! I completely agree with you Warmonger101 this is all guess work and 50/50 chance to break your card.

I question if this problem with the 5870 version of the cooler?

I have one of the 5870 coolers, but made a mistake on my 5870 purchase itself (I bought it after I ordered the cooler and got a gigabyte UD card, not knowing that non-reference cards were already out), so I haven't installed it.

I don't really have much to say about it outside of the card coming with only 6 instead of 7 washers, and 4 spacers instead of 3. also one of the main cooler fins is slightly bent inwards, but only one. Here's a couple of pics:

I suppose a minor edit is in order: the 5870 version comes with screws for mounting the cooler.

exactly what the hell is 25% and 50% >< don't you have to tighten it all the way to know what 25% is

EXACTLY. Speak in terms of turns, NOT percentage. You need to know 100% before you know 50%. I guess you COULD figure that out when you start out by using the AMD cooler tightness as a reference (if that's really 100%?)

I still have this piece of shit on my desk, once Discover clears the chargeback, I plan to post a video review which consists of the cooler meeting Mjöllnir. It'll be fun to make that video...I think I'll send a link to AC.

Another question: Why does the AMD cooler work with it being tightened 100%, but not the AC cooler? If they needed special mounting, then why didn't they include new screws?

As much as I WANT this cooler (and I WANTED it to work. BADLY. That's why I risked bricking my card, and clocked in as the 4th or 5th person on this forum to be bitching about a dead DVI connector.) I won't touch it again, no matter WHAT people claim. It's watercooling or nothing for me now, because I CAN trust DangerDen.

I like how the AC account has made 1 single post, yet last activity was yesterday. No answering anyones concerns, not replying to peoples emails, no comments on their damn products destroying peoples cards and replacing them because of their own negligence of designing a flawed product. FU

rampantandroid

The AMD cooler is a single large block of metal which distributes pressure evenly while the accelero is composed of multiple parts. There is a block, I think they are for VRAM and Mosfets & other components, if you apply pressure to 2 ends pressing it against the board it'll make the edges bend/warp just like in some of the shots people posted.

wow guys.. I know there is reason to get angry but there is still good info to be read if you want to install it.

I know AC is to blame for this but at the end of the day people are still wanting a cooler running videocard.

Yes percentage is not number of turns, thats why I stated along how many turns i rougly did on my install.

Lol. I can't believe you still don't get it. No one should install this cooler or do business with this company period.

I refuse to support a company that is treats their customers like this.

Well I was waiting on the 5870 version of this cooler but after this thread and the complete unavailablity of the Xtreme 5870 product anywhere, I decided to just go water cooling instead. More expensive, but the best possible cooling, and all the parts can be reused for newer cards with the exception of the blocks.

My friend insists on installing his, even though I warned him against it, he's a fool, but we agreed that if it kills his card he'll swapping the RMA for a 480GTX I have laying around.

I don't want to see him kill his card though :( To those who installed it and didn't kill the card/DVI what steps did you take to ensure that it wasn't going to break? How many turns of the screws? did you use the Xbrackets?

This guy had success and detailed pretty well how he installed it.

The problem here is that AC could give me NO HELP. They just acted stupid, and posted on HERE. They NEVER EVER emailed me to apologize, now to let me know the new instructions...or, god forbid, TO HELP ME DEAL WITH MY DEAD 5970! Arctic Cooling is a bunch of bastards in the end, and can go fuck themselves. I don't CARE if it now works, what about all of us who did RTFM, and had a dead card as a result?

Yeah just follow that guide.

For the X-Plates I only turned them like 2-3 turns (I don't know how much % is that -.- But not fully tighten, like half I would say).

The cooler is pretty good if it doesnt kill your card :p Although since the new warnings appeared on the official site, I haven't seen anyone @ Overclock.net brick their card, I also got it installed.

If the DVI fries is the card useless?

I just took a dive and installed it myself on his card taking full responsibility. It worked! cores are stable @ 36/35C. I guess I won't be giving up my 480GTX anytime soon though a pair of 5970's still sounds very good.

What are good / dangerous VDDC temps? I'm looking at GPU-z and seeing between 44-47C

ALSO I DO NOT RECOMMEND ANYONE DOING THIS INSTALL UNLESS YOU HAVE NOTHING TO LOSE! IT'S A PAIN IN THE ASS OF GUESS WORK AND STUFF CAN GO SERIOUSLY WRONG. ARCTIC COOLING CAN STILL GO SUCK ON A LEMON!

You see... No DVI ports will fry unless you over-tighten the screws, it's safe...

The Core temps and VDDC temps look good, almost same as mine.

With stock cooler while gaming, the VDDC temps would easily reach +100ºC.

Anything up to 100ºC is safe, 100-125ºC is ok too, but at 125º C the card throttles, but unless it reaches 100ºC, dont worry :)

With a minor OC 880/1245 it reaches 100C, when I set it to 925/1300 it hits 120-125C.

What part of the card is causing these temps? is it where that block is? We didn't tighten it all the way in fear of it causing the DVI to break. Is it ok to tighten that one?

Yea you didn't tighten it enough, and since the cooler is hanging upside down there is even less contact. This is why I prefer my reverse atx style.

It's why I prefer not using this cooler at all :-p

I still need to pick stuff for my loop and be done with it.

LoL! Hell yeah the DVI port will break if you tighten it! It is a defective cooler! You barely tightened it and it doesn't cool. I have a dead DVI port but my card never gets higher than 52C under full load.

I'm not talking about tightening the main block that covers the cores, but the voltage regulator block that'll break his DVI ports?

Cores never go above 68C even when playing Metro2033 on high DX11

You got something wrong there. 68ºC on stock temperatures or what OC?

Mine doesn't even hit 45ºC on any game @ stock .

Hi new here but I thought I might add some info..

I last followed this thread back in early May before I got my Accelero Fan on my 5970...
I saw some ppl having problems back then but I got it anyway due to the temps and fan noise on the stock cooler.

I didn't have an issue after I installed it..mines working great for the last month. max temp is about 55c.

I don't think i tighten my screws very tight but I never do on computer stuff. ?

One thing I did use that could have made a difference is I made a shim out of thin clear plastic ( like the type that protects paper ) around the contact parts.
Only to stop making a mess when cleaning up the old paste.

I had cut the shim in half so I could remove it easy when the Cooler was placed on top.
Sorry no pictures as I didn't think so many folks where having trouble.

On OC, stock speeds get me 49C on some games. Keep in mind that the tower is on the second level of my house which is at like 29C ambient temp all the time in the summer.

Still didn't get my question answered, is it to tighten the voltage regulator?

I suppose a minor edit is in order: the 5870 version comes with screws for mounting the cooler.

The 5870 version is a bit overkill in my opinion. I have the old two fan version on my 5870 and it never breaks 40° C.

The improved VRM cooling on the 3 fan version is a little better though.

The two fan version was already a little too big for a 5870, it caused mine to sag. Does the 3 fan version cause the card to bend/sag at all due to the even heavier weight?

Here goes a picture of my PC taken yesterday:

Do you like it? Anything I could improve on cable management? :p

So my 5970 died yesterday(WITHOUT AC 5970 Extreme installed), the backplate that just cools those 8 memory chips was so hot that it burned me, so who knows what the hell happened there.

Anyway, I figured since it was the weekend I would throw on the 5970 just to give me some practice for tightening when I get my 5970 back. To be honest it only took about 4-5 turns with a screwdriver on the x-plates before it looked like the cooler was coming into contact with the gpu dies.

One thing I did notice was that on the stock cooler, there was a sheet of plastic around the gpu's and the main communications chip so I figured, maybe the lack of one on the AC cooler could be a problem, but I couldn't find any components on the PCB that even came close to touching the underside of the cooler. In fact, all around the card I couldn't find any components on the pcb that came close to the cooler other than what components had heatpads on them.

Also, some people have complained about the weight of the thing, but it weighs less than my xfx stock cooler.

So in the end, I think what happened was that when people followed the original instructions, they bent their pcb enough to where they didn't cause a component to short with the cooler, but instead bent and broke a solder joint somewhere. Which, with a magnifying glass, might be able to get resoldered very easily.

Guys I need to ask you something.

Is the backplate really needed? I forgot to install mine, and my card is running without the backplate, will it affect the card anyhow?

Thank you,
Kevin.

INSTALL IT YOU FOOL! stop using your system RIGHT NOW you'll burn out your card.

The backplate isn't needed, but it's there for physical support. The problem with this cooler is bending of the PCB. With added pressure on key areas of the card and heat, massive amounts of heat (even though there's a large cooler) it'll start to bend and eventually kill your card.

Keep it off if you'd like, it serves for cooling and support but don't bitch if the card dies.

I guess I will install it after summer (I am leaving in a few hours for holidays, and I won't be using the PC until august, so no heat :) ).

Thanks.

Ok, I installed the backplate already :) Just in case.

Thanks for warning me! :)

Anymore news on this issue??? Would love to see AC step up but I guess not. DAMN WOULD LOVED TO OF USED THIS COOLER ON MY 5970 BUT I GUESS ALL THEY DID WAS LOSE ANOTHER CUSTOMER. Anyone else here about any other pontential coolers coming???

No, they've lost more than just a customer. I have $1500 invested in my two 5970s. Think I'm going to put my cards at risk? As long as I don't use their product, there's no chance that I'll be posting how my DVI failed. IN OTHER WORDS, BOTH MY CARDS ARE SAFE IF I DON'T USE THEIR PRODUCT.

Hi all,

My chargeback was declined by AC, with them saying it's my fault for installing it wrong; I detailed the reply Discover gave me here (it's in a new thread that is properly named. Hopefully people will see it and avoid AC from this time forward. I'd like to see that company bankrupt, the fucking piece of shit scumbag bastards that they are.

I also filed a formal complaint with Discover card, to get them flagged as a bad company to deal with.

just checked my credit card account, and it looks like the chargeback is final now. AC had 30 days to respond (by 6/19), but my CC company never contacted me again about it, so i'm assuming it is final. guess i should call the CC company to verify.

what should i do with the paperweight? i've got a couple cases of .50BMG APIT (armor piercing incendiary tracer) ammo i could shoot at it ...

Civies can't own that stuff here. I would cherish it and sleep with it under my bed in case of zombie uprising or alien invasion.

You can use that on it, as long as we get a video...or at least pictures of what is left of the heatsink...if anything :-p

I will quickly warn you, that some CCs allow the seller an extra ~30 days to reply (after the first 30 days, the money is taken from the seller, after the second 30 days, the decision is final.)

Sadly AC replied to my chargeback - I'm livid. Not at Discover mind you, they're doing what they have to. At AC though. I'm writing up a generic letter to send to the webshops carrying Arctic Cooling products, as well as a separate letter for the Office of Consumer Affairs in the US.

First off, hello there - decided to register after reading this thread.

So, despite reading these horror stories to put it mildly, I just ordered the AX and a standard Sapphire 5970. Now, while I'll try my best do not over-tighten the screws and really be careful, there's still the odd chance.

Now, my question really is IF this happens and my DVI port dies, would I be able to use the DisplayPort and a few adapters, turn it into a DVI signal and still be able to use my two 24" monitors? Because honestly, it wouldn't bother me one bit if this was possible.

I will however still report back tomorrow how it went and hopefully, someone will answer me question. ( I did order the appropriate converters for the DisplayPort as a contingency plan )

I heard on this thread that using a DVI-to-VGA adapter worked and it did display video.

I'd say you won't have any problems :p
