Gigabyte X58A-UD3R Thread

That's the older Silencer 750 Quad. The exact same SeaSonic-built PSU I have. However, it is no longer available new. It was replaced by a Sirfa-built unit.

love that PSU, it overclock so well for me compare to others :D

Hi guys and gals

I just got my new hardware

- Gigabyte - Socket 1366 - ATX Intel X58 (GA-X58A-UD3R) - DDR3 / 2xPCI-E / SATA
- Intel Core i7 930 2,8GHz / 8MB / 4,8GT/s Socket 1366
- Asus ATI Radeon HD 5770 1GB (EAH5770 Cu Core/2DI/1GD5/A)
- Intel 40GB X25-V G2 (SSD)

Memory is from an older server, 3*4GB pc3-8500r-7-10-hp
PSU is my old Corsair 400W

Problem is, LED on MB and fans are running, but then nothing. no post, no picture, no bios, no beep (yes speaker connected and tested) & no boot

I tried to remove the memory, the graphics card but no change. Even tried to run the mobo outside the case on the ESD bag.

Today i got a new MB, same problem. Got a new PSU, Corsair 550W.
I have not heard a single beep from this computer.

The LED glowning on MB is NB PHASE, DDR PHASE, DDR Voltage LED and PHASE LED. Not the FREQ LED's.

Mayby the CPU is broken?

Any other ideas?

regards Anders

As I stated a few times in other forums, the issue is that you're using the wrong memory for your new system. The i7-930, as manufactured, does not support registered or ECC memory at all. (The registered ECC memory support does exist on the CPU, but it is disabled internally at the factory and cannot be re-enabled without severely damaging the CPU.) In addition, the GA-X58A-UD3R does not support registered or ECC memory at all even with a Xeon CPU; you're limited to unbuffered non-ECC memory with that mobo.

In other words, you cannot use server memory at all with most desktop processors or motherboards.

aha, go figure! i did not even think about that!

one question thou. Should the MB beep when trying to start without memory installed?

I don't know if has been reported before. I was suffering coil whine with my x58A-UD3R rev 1.0 with PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750 PSU.
Instead of disabling C1E, I enabled "C3/C6/C7 State Support" (the option below C1E in the bios) and the whine is gone.
So instead of having less power saving features I have more and no whine.
Hopefully it helps someone else.

Ok so at first I was not getting coil whine until I tried loading crysis, and even with c1e disabled I still get the whine while gaming.

Tried enabling C1E, C3/C6/C7 and EIST in different combinations and either way my computer crashes either while loading windows or shortly after with any of these 3 settings, what am I missing?

you sure the coil while is from motherboard? this most likely to be graphic card that is doing it.

Well I suppose I can't be certain about that but I didn't have any such issues with this gpu when using it in my last build.

all graphic card whine in Crysis, I been through too many cards, which I am pretty sure it will whine.

Kudos to stasio @ TweakTown.

Built my 930/x58a-udr3 system today. Easiest build I've ever done. No problems with ram, running at 2002mhz from a simple page down. Only hiccup was my mixing up the power switch/power led on the fpc. I read power just chucked it on :p

Also had to get a 5870, finally retired my 6600gt. It's been through a few setups!

Do you have whine? What PSU are you using?

We would appreciate it if you would report back.

I have been whittling down my overclock for the past few days. Any small amount of whine I noticed initially (mine was from my HX620 PSU) is now 100% gone.

I have settled on a mild OC of 3.8 Ghz (19 x 200). I have C1E and EIST enabled. System idles at 2.4Ghz (12 x 200).

I have rev 2.0 on this board. I know I heard some electrical whine from my PSU initially when I ran dban on my drive. When the drive was running continuously during that erase, I heard the whine. Now that I loaded Windows and have been tweaking all the settings for 3-4 days, there is absolutely no whine. Even when the hard drive is running. I can't explain it.

So I decided ultimately to return my PSU to Newegg, eat the restocking fee + shipping, and order a Corsair HX750 from TigerDirect (in case I need to return it and avoid another restocking fee).

It sounds like the Corsair PSU's manufactured by CWT on the DSG platform don't whine with this board. I'll report back when I get it hooked up and tested.

Sharing another experience with this board
It is a known consequence of overclocking that S3 (sleep) stops working. My problem was it was not working for me with this board and default clocks.
It would go to sleep as normal, but getting out of it it would simple hang, showing nothing on the monitor. A hard restart was needed then it would resume from the hdd as if coming out from hibernation.
No errors in memtest, or stress testing the CPU.
Then I remember that is mentioned that this board is very picky with memory. Even though I had no memory errors or stability problems I started rotating dim modules and after a several tries I found a position where I got S3 (sleep) functionality back in windows.
Hopefully this can help someone else.

Hmmm.... I have been having S3 sleep issues. I was planning to track it down once I got my SSD tomorrow when I re-installed stuff. Will look into this, as I would really like S3 sleep to work.

Currently resuming from S3 leaves me with hardware interrupts that eat my cpu cycles (~10% of load).

hi guys

i know it's pretty obvious it's Rev 2.0, but I just want to double check

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Looks like it, but compare your images to these:

Rev 1
http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/fileupload/product/2/3305/1350.jpg
Rev 2
http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/fileupload/product/2/3449/3025.jpg

The Rev 2 board if you look at the left side of the image, has the orange usb plug in, you can tell the left side of the images are very different when you compare.

Let us know how it goes with whine and what PSU you are using.

I am in the midst of finishing a new build with a GA-X58A-UD3R mobo and had the whine.

I have Rev1.0 with bios F5.
Batch# 1017
A Corsair 750XT power supply.

I had the whine up until I set the RAM to XMP Profile1 and diabled C1E. Now I get an occasional low hum. Not exactly sure if it is the PSU or the mobo, but it is nothing close to what the squeak, whine, and pops were before that. I'm not sure which thing helped the most. My CPU voltage LED is at Level 2/moderate/yellow on the board. Not sure if that has anything to do with the noises or lack thereof.

Should i trade my rev1.0 for a rev 2.0. The microcenter near me has them in stock. I have 10 days on my return policy left?

doubt you will notice any difference.

if you don't mind switching it would be fine, but if you don't want to waste your time, don't bother it.

the only difference is a small update on controller and cpu phase, then the rest are identical.

Here's my report back for whine on my new PSU

I am running a Rev 2 board
PSU: Corsair HX750 (modular). C1E, C3/C6/C7, and EIST all enabled, Memory set on XMP1 (3x2GB Gskill RAM DDR3 1600)

Once again, only during hard drive activity (for instance playing AVI file off my storage drive, 1TB Samsung F3), there is a faint whine.

I am running stock cooler/HSF i7 930 and the stock fans that came with my Coolermaster CM 690 II Advanced.

To hear it, I have to put my ear right next to the case (because of it is of a higher pitch/frequency). Otherwise, it is quieter than the stock fans/cooling I am running when I sit up and do normal use.

The whine only goes away when I disable C1E AND C3/C6/C7 (I have EIST still ENABLED)

Overall, the whine is quieter on the HX750 than the TX750. I only experienced whine on both when there was hard drive activity. On the TX750 though, I could definitely hear it more audibly in normal situations while with the HX750, I have to put my head right next to the case to hear it.

It's honestly not worth the hassle to me to find the right power supply, and I am glad I upgraded to the HX750 anyways so I am going to stick with this. I plan to overclock anyways and get all new/quiet aftermarket cooling for my case/setup, so C1E and C3/C6/C7 being disabled is no big deal. When I overclock, I'll try to see if enabling C1E and C3/C6/C7 works, but for now this will have to do.

Just like to chime in... using Corsair TX-750W.

1st mobo (rev 1) had whine noise. Thought it was defective so returned unit. (did not know that the C1E disabled would fix issue as noise came from speaker)

2nd mobo (rev 2) had whine noise. Want to kill Gigabyte then self. Thought of returning defective mobo but dreaded reinstalling all apps, so found this thread instead. Disabled C1E and whining sound is gone.

Been a lurker on this site for a while now, and today is my first day posting here... so be gentle with me.

Could someone post their OC setup - details from your BIOS? I tried OCing the other day and system appears unstable even at 3.6GHz. I'm new at OCing, so would like to replicate others' setup and see if I can push my system to max/stable.

Here is my build:
Mobo - Gigabyte X58A-UD3R
CPU - Intel i7-930
PSU - Corsair TX-750W
VGA - XFX HD 5770
HSU - Coolermaster Hyper 212 Plus
HDD - Intel SSD X25-M (bootup and app install)
HDD - Samsung F3 Spinpoint 1TB x 2pcs (RAID 1 - data storage)
Memory - G.SKILL 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)
Memory 2 - Crucial 3072MB PC10600 DDR3 1333MHz

reporting in from Vancouver, BC
purchased this board last week from NCIX. specifically requested rev 2.0

still waiting for parts and will report back on the noise issue.

parts i will ultimately have (relavant to this whine issue)
1) X58A-UD3R (duh)
2) i7 940
3) TX750
4) g.skill ddr3-1600 3x2gb
5) evga gtx 260/216

is it almost a near 100% (or something extremely high) guarantee that there will be a whine w/certain power supplies or is this a luck of the draw thing and everyone who posted here just having bad luck
(ie. proportion of whine vs no whine scenarios including cases outside of this forum)

other than this whine issue (which CAN be remedied by disabling C1E), any gripes about this board ?
i chose this board over the asus x58d-e because of the extra SATA ports and esata (and 2oz of copper lol) ..... it was hard choice for me because ive always been an ASUS user but the cheaper price and extra features made me jump on this board instead.. i hope i wont regret it

So my rig seems to let out a squeel or a hard drive seeking sound even when only the SSD is in use. Odd thing is about 50% of the time, or more, I can stop the squeel simply by using the mouse scroll wheel on a web page. Does this sound like the C1E bug everyone with a fancy power supply is getting???

Also anyone get S3 to work??? Mine works occassionally, but usually it comes right back out on its own or shuts off completely and windows warns me it did not shut down properly. Any advice would be appreciated.

Does anyone know how to get speaker fill for 5.1 surround on this mb? Downloaded the latest (rather only) drivers from gigabytes site and can't find any option for it anywhere. I know I had the option on my old mb with VIA.

What do you mean by speaker fill? As in like a Pro Logic type of surround processing? Also, you should use sound drivers from Realtek's site, not Gigabyte's. www.realtek.com.tw

@Trigeminal: Yes, that's the whine. It can sound different with different PSUs. What PSU do you have? I'll add you to the list.

@Jimmy: You will have the whine with the 750TX. Use a different PSU or a different MB.

SeaSonic X650 Gold 650W Power Supply

I actually have the X58A-UD5, but obviosly the same whine. I'll try disabling C1E on it today, damn thing is driving me insane. Odd thing is that I have used this without the whine, but the old SeaSonic X650 Gold 650W went down. This one was fine until I did cable management a couple days ago and installed my SSD.
