Hes got one, its clearly visible in the picture. Its not like you can just hook speakers up to the back of your TV.

REALLY!?!?! oh man ive had my monitor audio RS6s hooked up to my TV this whole time!!! same with my hsu subwoofer... amazing.

im talking about a dedicated amp.. not a receiver. i cant remember if the RF klipsch series is good sensitivity or not, i doubt the RF-82's dont like a solid 100w going their way though, which the yamaha cant do without quite a bit of distortion im sure (receivers are what they are.. i have an onkyo right now and as soon as i get enough money im buying a new receiver and a nice power amp)

Don't get all butt hurt just because your post wasn't clear. Guess what receivers have in them? AMPS!

And I assumed you were talking about a receiver because:

A) many people just call them amps (not saying its right, but its the truth)
B) 500 dollars worth of speakers doesn't scream out "You need high priced separates!" to me, ESPECIALLY when it doesn't even look like he has a sub yet and the TV that's between them isn't exactly the greatest.

Basically I had the choice between assuming you were just making a crappy recommendation or assuming you didn't see the receiver sitting there. I guessed wrong, sorry.

lol.

hey! what's wrong with my tv? what does it have to do with my speakers? lol.

i bought this setup for listening to music only. not really for watching movies. i don't have a sub, but i'm thinking about getting one. once i save enough money, i'll try to complete the rf-82 hometheater set.

that yamaha should have enough juice to push those klipsch's, they're relatively sensitive.

the RF-82s are $1000 speakers... spending $300 on an amp will vastly improve the sound. If you think that is a crappy recommendation then im not sure what type of amps you have been buying

also, xref, if i were you i would give those klipsch a lot more space, having them right next to the bookshelf with no breathing room or distance for imaging is like having a lamborghini and never driving it fast ;)

The Klipsch are very sensitive... easily around 95-100db/1watt/1m.

Now, with that kind of sensitivity... you're probably running about 1 watt at loud volumes then... considering if you're listening to music at about 85db at seating position.

So, the reason to get a dedicated amp is not whether the amp has enough juice or power (watts), but because a dedicated amp will have better and more current (I) running through it and into the speakers.

For the klipsch speakers, you could easily get away with SET amps.... low powered amp with about 10w of power but an awesome combo to behold IMO.

it's true, sometimes more dedicated amps can make all the difference. I used to run my B&W DM220's off a harman kardon avr55 reciever (65w RMS in stereo mode) and it just didn't cut it for these speakers... Since I got the AVR55 I've been running an older Yamaha A720 Stereo integrated amp on them and it gives them a hell of a lot more power, definitely a noticeable difference in sound, loudness and clarity

what fronts are those? they dont look B&W but with all that equipment it wouldn't make sense to have unmatched fronts.

Seems that the center speaker is a BW 300 or 600 series, not sure. The mains are, I dont know.

The fronts are a german speaker brand caled Magnat there ok but very soon ill be upgrading them to B&W DM604 S3's to match the rest of my speakers, my center is the B&W LCR600 S3 and my rears are the DM602 S3's

the 604's are killer speakers, although I like the look of the original series and the S2's a lot more than the S3 look.

WOW!

Ever thought of consolidating all this into an HTPC with all DVDs on hard drive?

My setup isn't nearly as impressive as many of the ones I've seen around here, but at 18 years old I dont think im doing too bad. I've worked for the money to pay for everything in my room (with the exception of the reciever used for my ipod, which was a freebie I took when my parents upgraded)

The computer runs both analog and coax for the Z5500's, digital for music and analog for games, it also has an Optical cable plugged into the Xbox360 (which also runs off the other input on the monitor), the 360 is upstairs so its not in these shots. It pains me ever time I see the cone pushed in on the right woofer of the large speakers, if anyone has suggestions to fix it, I'd love to hear them. I took a picture of the "specs" card listed on the back, its the only info I have on them.

The iPod and reciever I use that for my bedside music (you can see one of my pillows in the corner of the shot), the reciever has since been dusted as the flash made it evident that it was there so I promptly wiped it down.

My dog wanted in a picture when he saw the camera, so here he is, after that is the sight that greeted me when I opened the front door to let him outside for a bathroom run.

On some forum, it was suggested that a vacuum cleaner can be used to pull the cone back into shape. I never tried this, so act at your own risk.

FullMonty35, cute cat you have there. I missed it the first time I looked at the pictures.
Interesting setup.

ooh, thanks for the ideas on how to fix that speaker, I'll give it a shot tomorrow sometime. And yeah, my cat lives behind my monitor, I've got my own little "ceiling cat" ;) :D

My dog (assuming you're talking to me) is a Rat Terrier, not the greatest name but they're basically a friendlier, scaled down version of a Jack Russel, and they have more stand-up ears

This is the only other picture I have of him right now

Hey everyone,

I haven't spoken for a while, I've been busy trying to get good grades in college. Last quarter ended up being a disaster for my math class so this quarter I am kicking my own ass by forcing me to sit down and spend hours on end of homework and studying. We'll watch my GPA jump up an entire point this next quarter I believe.

In the meantime, yesterday I got my lofting kit for my bed allowing me to boost it up near the ceiling and giving me lots of room underneath it to put anything in which I had in mind to put my speakers. Here are the pics... Enjoy!

From the listening "sweet" spot.

Closeup of the receiver, monster power conditioner, DVD/CD player, rack, and center speaker.

Details in which I'm running right now:

Marantz SR7500 receiver (135 watts per front left/right speaker and 105 watts for the rest of the speakers)
Marantz DV6400 DVD/CD player
Monitor Audio RS1's for front left/right speakers
Audioquest CV-4 solid copper 15ga speaker cable
Sanus NF-30 stands for the RS1 speakers
Monster PowerCenter HTS3500MKII
Boston Acoustics Center Sat7 center speaker
M&K MX-105 subwoofer with dual 12" woofers
Audioquest Sub-X subwoofer cable
Boston Acoustics Micro90x rear left/right speakers (not pictured)
Homemade flexy rack made of MDF, threaded rods, nuts, washers, and some paint and varnish
Monster Cable XP-CI to center and surround speakers
Monster Cable THX digital coaxial cable running between Marantz DV4600 DVD/CD player and Marantz SR7500 receiver

It sounds beautiful. I'm in love. I don't even use the subwoofer, the speakers make great enough sound the way it is.

Send me a PM or post here if you have any comments/suggestions/questions. Yes, I have speakers under my bed. Yes, there is no monitor or TV. Yes, my desk monitor disconnects easily and connects to sit on top of the rack for movie watching. No, I don't watch many movies these days. Yes, I use the system for 99% music.

Wow that's an expensive looking setup for in a dorm room. Although your bed is FRIGHTENING! Brave man to sleep up there

PS: The 18's sound awesome actually, im no audiophile by any means but I do have a slightly above average taste for good sounding equipment. I'm always getting in trouble for turning these up to loud as the bass from those 2 speakers alone (I dont run a sub on that setup anymore, I will when I get a decent one) is enough to shake the upstairs floors on a 1/4 or so volume. It's easy to lose track of how loud I have it :D

PPS: I tried the vaccum trick to pull the cone out but it loses its seal on it when it gets pulled about halfway out and pops back into place, I was hoping to try the packing tape trick but my house is basically snowed in these last few days, cant really get to any of the stores that would sell it and I cant seem to find one of the 10+ rolls we have around our house. I know we have a few bottles of krazy glue around here and im sure we have a toothpick or something I could use, but how exactly is this method done? Do you just dip a large portion of the toothpick in the glue and lay it flat against the cone so it's holding a large area of it?

I was wondering where on earth you got the time to actually use a setup like that without having everybody in the rest of the dorm banging on your door! I mean I don't even get to turn up my setup with just a single pair of bookshelf speakers! I'll take pics later.

5.1 to listen to music 99% of the time? that seems a bit excessive to listen to stereo music channeled through 5 speakers.

Not to mention that (unless he is listening to DVD-A or SACDs, no audio streams are encoded in 5.1 so the extra 3 speakers would be superfluous. They would only serve to discolor the sound, ruin the soundstage, and clutter the room up :)
