I've never heard the Axioms so I don't really know how they'll compare.

I owned the M22ti before... and I just heard the M3ti against my speakers (look at speaker pics above) and I think the M22ti will lose out to the XLS in terms of bass extension but will have a more clean and clear sound.... though I think the XLS will have an overall more musical presentation.

Glad to see you like them. I agree about that center. It's a beast. I was going to buy a pair of centers to use as L & R for my computer. I'm not sure they'd both fit on my desk after seeing yours. Still, I might pull the trigger on them if my HTDs aren't here soon. Me gots no patience!! :p

I scoped the Axiom line, too. I never bought them, but researched the M3 and M22. Both received lots of great press, but I was leery of Axiom's reputation for "bright" sound with little bass. I have a pair of Energy bookshelves that sound good, but are on the bright end, as well.

For me it came down to Onix and HTD. I think both are excellent, very well built and highly praised. HTD came out slightly ahead because of its ribbon tweeter and shipping cost. HTD has a similar shipping policy to Axiom. It cost just $15 to ship them and they'll pay the return fee if you're not satisfied.

I hope I like my HTDs as much as you like your Onix!
 
I'm currently trying to figure out how I want to arrange everything long term. Anyone have any ideas about a hutch or stand or something so I could get the center channel up above the monitor? The desk has a monitor stand which I removed because it wouldn't fit with anything, ideally I'd like to be able to reinstall it, put the monitor on it, put the amp under it (it'll barely fit), and then have the center somewhere above it.

What about the recessed area above the monitor where you stacked all those books? It's tough to tell how far back the wall extends, so the center might be too big to place on it.
 
Unfortunately it's nowhere near deep enough. I've thought about making a little shelf out of some wood and long L brackets attached below the ledge but theres a pretty good chance I'll be moving within 5 months or so so it wouldn't be a permanent solution, so I kind of don't even want to bother.

If I can find the right book shelf type deal I know it'll work. Basically one that is wide enough, isn't too tall, and has it so the bottom shelves are optional. They had one that I think will work at Best Buy but it was pretty ugly. I'm going to take some measurements and look around more tomorrow.

How's your t-amp sound? Do you feel your setup sounds better than for example a 2.0 or 2.1 computer speakers setup? Wanting to know so I could recommend the Insignia speakers with a t-amp like you got, unless it's worth it to put 156 bucks into Klipsch's promedia 2.1 system.

I just got a pair myself, and was stunned how well they work with my Pioneer floor speakers. They have great balance with my subwoofer, which isn't actually that great at all, so I'm happy :)

Insignia NS-B2111 to be replaced by Polk RT25i's when i go home for christmas. I was demoing these just to see what they're all about. Amazing for the price but i think i like the Polk's a little more.

I have the black one, but it scratches like hell. Sometimes I wish I got the white one, lol.
 
So would two seperate mono-block amps (two single channel power amps) be better than one box that is two channel if lets say they were all the same company and same output per channel?

At one point I found two Class-A mono-block amps for sale on Audiogon.com made by Marantz for sale for 150 dollars a piece. I couldn't find a decent Class-A power amp that sold for 300 dollars that was Class-A.

Which screen do you actually watch movies (encoded in surround sound) on?

I like the CD spindle collection and a lot of your setup!

you've got 3 speaker sets........are you using certain sets for different kinds of audio? are they all pumping out sound at once?

I use the 22" for most media playback. I found that even with the reduced screen size of the lcd, the widescreen + clarity more than makes up for the drop from a 27" CRT. The TV is mostly used for my ps2 + gamecube.

I usually use the Strata Minis for all-around audio like the audio coming from the PC or gaming.

I use the Martin Logans for stereo listening...

The Axioms were temporary and they were here for comparison's sake. :)

Monoblocks would essentially eliminate any "sharing of components" within the amplifier. In a way, there is a power supply, a (toroidal) transformer (which incidentally is part of the PS), a set of output and input stages, and a dedicated circuitry line for each channel... this is always present in a monoblock setup, but not in a stereo 2ch setup (unless the amp is a single chassis dual-mono design).
 
little update:
i finally got the TV stand, which is really mint. it can turn left or right, depends on where you planning on watching it. also the dvd player has its own space now under it, before that it was sitting on the receiver, which wasnt exactly the best thing.
thinking of buying a bigger TV though, as this one looks pretty small now. possibly a LCD.

I just hope you've done some kind of room treatments. From what I've seen, you could put $40k in speakers in there and it would sound awful. Those kinds of walls are terrible, and those carpets aren't that great either.

I hope you realize that I'm still in a dorm.... so excuse my room. But before passing judgement on how it sounds, perhaps you should hear it first. It's not like I just went and bought speakers... I've been around the block and started with the cheapest computer speakers sans a subwoofer.

Anyway, wait until I move to my own place, then we'll see about room treatments.
 
I'm pretty positive I'm going to be picking up some Monitor Audio BR2's here soon. If not those, then I might look into the B4's or BR5's or possibly the RS1's.

Anybody have much experience with Monitor Audio speakers?

I've lived in a dorm, I don't need to hear it. And with the kinds of reflections and sounds you get in a dorm room, I'd pass on hearing your system. There are certainly many affordable (or not so affordable) ways you could work to reasonably improve your room acoustics.

Reflections may affect room acoustics but having a nice system always sounds good no matter where you put it (as long as it's set up right in which I'm sure Joey has done so). Room treatments only help to make it sound better and make the most of what you have.

I've listened to those speakers before and they sound great and I'm positive they sound great in his system as well.

I don't have treatments at all as I am in a dorm room as well. First off, I should mention I'm the only person in my entire dorm building (30 rooms a floor with 11 floors) that has a actual receiver in college. Let alone class-A amps or high end "Audiophile" equipment or room treatments.

If room treatments were so important, why don't I see it more here at the University of Washington in the dorm rooms? Because money is better spent on speakers than on room treatments. And in many people's opinions, money is better spent on something other than stereo equipment.

Killer: I was about to pull the trigger on a pair of HTD Level 3 bookshelves. Your post made me hold off, especially after seeing how yours blew out. Are your Infinity speakers really much better than the HTD?
 
Here's what I just got hooked up today... Wharfedale Diamond 9.0 speakers, with a Sony STR-DG500 receiver/amp that I picked up for cheap this afternoon. Sounds great :D. All I need is a sub. The computer setup is just temporary, I've got an HDTV and PS3 coming in about a week, so they will be moving to the TV area of the room when they do. I ordered some long optical cables from monoprice though, so I will still have the computer connected to the audio system :)

That's a-ok with me. Audio snobbery at its best. If you want to play like that, I can honestly say that I'm almost 100% sure that nothing you have deserves my attention either.... since you're so into playing this snobbery game.

To a point, eventually you're spending money for small gains from speakers when a minor investment in room treatments could have a much larger impact on the quality of sound coming from far less expensive speakers. I dare you to try it, you'll be singing a different tune. Certainly the amount of benefit of room treatments depends on the room, but a dorm room is a prime example of where if you want top sonic quality, you need room treatments.

It doesn't take a lot of money or fancy equipment to know how to set up a system properly. to say that someone has nothing worthy of hearing implies you don't realize that. I'd put a number of less expensive systems I've heard recently up against those Summits and your electronics simply because they've been put in a room that can showcase what they are fully capable of. It's akin to taking a ferrari and only driving it in a school zone, you're not showing it's full potential.
