To a point, eventually you're spending money for small gains from speakers when a minor investment in room treatments could have a much larger impact on the quality of sound coming from far less expensive speakers. I dare you to try it, you'll be singing a different tune. Certainly the amount of benefit of room treatments depends on the room, but a dorm room is a prime example of where if you want top sonic quality, you need room treatments.

It doesn't take a lot of money or fancy equipment to know how to set up a system properly. to say that someone has nothing worthy of hearing implies you don't realize that. I'd put a number of less expensive systems I've heard recently up against those Summits and your electronics simply because they've been put in a room that can showcase what they are fully capable of. It's akin to taking a ferrari and only driving it in a school zone, you're not showing it's full potential.

I don't know about Joey's dorm regulations but in my room:

Bluetape and small thumbtacks are the only things allowed to be put into walls. No nails whatsoever.

Carpet cannot be pulled up here. Most you can do is lay carpet on carpet.

Even if I had the money and purchased panels for the walls, there's no way they'd be able to hang with tacks or blue painter's tape. Then we'd be talking about putting them up rest against the wall? Umm, most people won't go that extreme to make the room a complete mess with panels laying against walls everywhere.
 
I wondered the same thing about pinpig's setup, it cant sound good in a dorm room. My HTDs sounded like crap in my dorm room, and they're pretty nice speakers. There was just no place to put them that actually created a nice soundstage without all kinds of reflections and other crap. Not to mention all the horrible window trim, the light fixture, everything in that room vibrated and rattled from the subwoofer, no matter how low it was turned down.

Basically, room treatments wont even work for him, considering how enclosed the room is and the materials used in its construction.

And its not true that a really expensive speaker system would sound good magically in any room. Honestly, there is not much of a difference between a $40k speaker system and a $1k speaker system when the room is less than optimal.
 
Generally, you do not put electrostats in a small room due to their nature of sound releasing back and forth.
But I guess this set up is fine for now because when you move out to another room, you will see the difference in sound which is another experience ;)

P.S.
I went to an audio store in LA over the weekend and had the chance to audition Vantage and Summits /w mc402 power amp and AR pre-amp and
man, they sound pretty good with female vocals.

Be careful... that amp is NOT rated to power anything bridged at 2 ohms. The most that amp will do is 3200 watts at 1kHz at 4 ohms bridged and that's at optimum conditions with no voltage sag. 20Hz to 20kHz you're only going to get about 3000 at most. QSC makes great amps though.

Oh I will agree with you that there is potential there especially in a better treated room, no doubt. THat's half the fun in what I got.... it sounds so RIDICULOUSLY good at the moment and knowing that I have potential remaining is an awesome revelation! I know that my next apartment will have to have a living room fit for these speakers and I will release them from having to do PC duty.

In all reality, I had my speakers in my living room but I could not, for the life of me, tame the reflections and echo-ey sound characteristic of that living room and I ended up bringing the Summits back to my bedroom.

The crazy thing is that I literally MOVED to a larger (1 bedroom + living room) dormitory just so I could have the Summits in the living room and have my personal listening room. Lo behold the room is so craptacular that even the bedroom sounded MUCH better! This was such a waste of money because I'm back where I started... grrrr....

Anyway, thanks for the idea of room treatments... I'm way ahead of you guys as I have already made schematics for it. I just dont want to put anything up at this juncture as I know that I am moving in not too long.

On the contrary, I've had three bonafide audiophiles (in addition to dozens of friends) come to my room and listen. Sometimes, they'd bring their speakers over for a true A/B comparison. The 3 conclusions were always the same. Best reproduction, period. And one of these audiophiles just came from an audition at a local super hifi dealer of some Wilson Maxx2, BAT 600 monoblocks, and BAT CDP with the system totalling over $100,000.... and he still said that what he heard in my untreated room was better in terms of imaging, realism, and overall coherence of the soundstage.

"Mind boggling" were the words the third discerning audiophile used (He owned Axiom, Monitor, Energy Veritas gear).

And I will say this, I've heard Summits in fully treated rooms at several dealers, and to my ears, the dealer's choice of upstream electronics (mostly in the preamp and amp area) were not synergistic with the panels. I think that what I have sounds better than what I heard. The dealers I've been to are especially notorious for having poor toe-in positioning with these panels....

As bad as it may look, the system actually sounds really good. So, to know that it still has potential, is an awesome predicament to be in, actually.

I just ordered a pair of Infinity's Primus P162 bookshelves. My HTD Level 3 bookshelves are on backorder until March

Well, I got some Monitor Audio RS1's basically as a christmas gift. I have them hooked up to a Adcom preamp and a Yamaha M-60 power amplifier currently. I also got the Sanus NF30 stands for them as well. Very sturdy and high quality stands I say. Anyways, here are some pictures for now. When I put the speakers and stands in my dorm room, I'll post pictures once again.

The floorstanding speakers aren't connected as of the moment but those are SpeakerLab's which sound pretty good. They are my father's though. Got to love the 62" Mitsubishi DLP 1080p TV as well. Pictures taken with my new Canon Powershot ELPH SD630 digital camera that I got as well.

Like I said in our emails, great speakers! And I must say, your camera takes good pics! I'm sure when you get your Monitors hooked up to your equipment and you play with the positioning and toe-in, you'll be even moreso impressed!

Love those RS1s!! I thought about getting them for my PC, but that's kinda like pouring ketchup on a freshly grilled, medium rare, 12oz filet... it just isn't right.

They are great, I am super happy with how they sound :)

And thanks, I used my Canon EOS 20D with a 17-40 f/4L lens to take that shot. Given the cost, I should hope they sound decent :D

It will take a bit of tuning to get them sounding really nice... what I am concerned most about now is getting a sub for them. I am leaning towards Wharfedale obviously, as I've done some work for the owner recently and I still haven't collected. What better payment than a nice woofer??

I'm also considering picking up another 2 pairs of the Diamond 9.0's and building a 6.1 system. With a Playstation 3 on the way, and a home theater build in the works, I think it would work out nicely :). The only problem then is that the system will be reassigned to video game/movie duty rather than computer duty, where they will see a lot of music. What ever would I do then? Hmmmmmm.......... Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm....................

Yes, I agree too. What's holding that speaker at an angle? I hope it's something with a high coefficient of friction! (sorry, just had to include the physics talk there)

not to sound like an ass or anything but i dont think onix makes speakers, theyre either a subdivision of av123 that makes electronics or theyre a brand that av123 sells on their website... not really sure

doesnt change the sweet setup he has though... Nic i would recommend getting a big tv, those speakers will sound way better if youre in their sweet spot (which in front of the computer sadly is not..)

It has rubber feet on it that keep it plenty stable, I can reach up and yank on it and it doesn't even budge.

Good... had me worried there for a second. Good setup, center is a little overpowering in size looks like compared to your HL2 themed LCD :p

AFAIK, they're branded as Onix, sold through av123.com.

doesnt change the sweet setup he has though... Nic i would recommend getting a big tv, those speakers will sound way better if youre in their sweet spot (which in front of the computer sadly is not..)

I bought these specifically for the computer, my home theater audio system cost quite a bit more (and I like the sound a little bit better, five B&W speakers and an Infinity sub).

I don't think I've ever posted pics of my B&W setup, it's nothing that special, but it does handily beat the Onix system in sound as far as my ears are concerned (and it certainly should considering the price difference).

Right now it's not even set up, because my TV took a dump and I've been agonizing over what to get for the last week. Now I'm just shopping around looking for the best deal (pretty sure I'm going to get a ~40 inch 1080 LCD, then next year get a SED or a Laser depending on which looks the best, then use the 40" for the PC and dual monitor it with the 22" I've currently got). I'm not in too much of a rush because in a week I'll be leaving on a month long business trip. I'll probably just wait until I get home.

Real cheap stuff could be gotten at Home Depot. It looks like garbage but it is noise foam. It's actually kind of pricy too I think.

Man that's some impressive stuff you have and it would be hard to do stuff in your dorm to screw it up. When I was in the Army I heard some killer rigs in the Barracks and Dorms.

Though I'm not an Audiophile, or at least I keep telling myself that, I'll drive 32 miles to visit a bud to hear his system.

Its pretty solid. It doesn't give you the knock the roof off feeling that you'd get with a ported 12" but it's very accurate and clean. MSRPd for 1800 bucks new, not sure what the street price was. I picked it up new for only 600 dollars at a local audiophile stores going out of business sale. I'm constantly debating whether I should buy the rest of the Infinity setup to match it:

Those are the mains, they also make smaller ones I'd use for surrounds and also a center. If I ever find the right deal on them I'll probably do it, until then I've been pretty happy with the B&Ws.

hehe. yeah they're kinda big. about 4' tall and 1' deep. i just got them last saturday.
