You graphics card progression

GeForce 4 MX 420 64MB AGP
Radeon 9200 SE 64MB AGP
Radeon 9550 SE 128MB AGP
Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB AGP
GeForce 7900GS 256MB PCI-E
GeForce 8800GT 512MB PCI-E

Looks like my next card will have 1GB of VRAM :)

Matrox Mystique
Geforce 2 GTS
Radeon 9550 (on massive overclock == 9600 Pro)
Radeon X800 XL
Geforce 8800 GTX

I'm waiting for my next upgrade. It must be a minimum of 2.5x as fast as the 8800 GTX (150% more performance at the same settings, and no more than 175W load power consumption), or else it's not worth buying. FWIW, 8800 GTX is 4x as fast as the X800 XL. In my eyes, all current generation cards are only incremental upgrades, and very disappointing, 2.5 years later, and they can only do 60-100% better on a single card (4890 / GTX 285), while consuming so much power to warrant building a power plant (nVidia is worse at this with their GTX 285).

In correct order...

1 MB Cirrus Logic integrated
8 MB ATi xPert (essentially an ATi Rage with crap drivers)
1 MB Trident
64 MB Geforce 4 MX420
2 MB S3 Videocard
8 MB Matrox Mystique
12MBx2 VooDoo SLI
8 MB ATi Rage
128 MB MX440
256 MB 5900 Ultra
128 MB 9800 Pro
256 MB (from system memory) 7050 Integrated
32 MB ATi Radeon 7000
256 MB 8600 GT
512 MB HD4670
768 MB 9600GSO

S3 Savage S540 (Diamond Stealth)

Radeon 64MB VIVO

radeon 9000 pro

radeon 9700 pro

radeon x800xt-pe

radeon x1950 pro

radeon hd3850 crossfire

radeon hd4870x2

Notice a trend?

ati rage pro turbo
ati rage II
ati radeon 32MB
ati 3d rage pro 8mb! (radeon fried and couldn't rma it so went to this card)
S3 savage s2000 64mb
ati radeon 9100
ati radeon 9600
(lived with the upper two for about 3-4 years from 2002ish to 2006/7ish)
ati radeon x1650 agp (bought it for $160 2 years ago..)
rebuilt my pc to a brand new C2Q so got 2x ati radeon 3870's for $250
radeon 4870 512MB soon as they came out (within 2 weeks)

Mac Vid card progression:
MacSE Onboard Video
MacSE/30 With a 4MB Radius Card
PowerMac 6100/60 with AV Card
PowerMac 7200/120 PC Compatible (Pentium 100 Add-on card with ATI Rage 2 Pro)
Then I got my first PC. Vid card progression there went:
Nvidia Riva TNT
MSI (I think) Geforce 2 GTS
ATI Radeon 9700 Pro
ATI x800 XL AGP (Open box special very low price, would not have purchased from Future Shop otherwise hehe)
BFG Geforce 7800 GTX PCI-e (my x800 died and managed to get it replaced to this card with Future Shop extended warranty)
Asus Geforce 8800GTX
EVGA Geforce GTX 295 /w backplate

2mb onboard ati ---> shitty 32mb onboard SiS --> x1400 --> 7900gt --> 8800gts 640mg --> hd4870

Geforce 3 Ti 200 > Geforce 4 Ti 4200 > Radeon 9800 Pro > Geforce 6600 GT > Geforce 7900 GS > Radeon 4850

That's mine, nothing special, wondering what yall's look like.

We almost match on the last three cards! Unfortunately, I've been in this game much longer :)

Cirrus Logic onboard
S3 ViRGE (Diamond Stealth 3D 2000)
Rendition v2200 (Hercules Thriller 3D)
Nvidia Riva TNT (STB Velocity 4200)
Matrox G400
Matrox G400 MAX
Radeon 8500
GeForce 6600 GT (XFX)
GeForce 7900 GT (XFX)
Radeon 4850 (Sapphire)

Something funny I just noticed: I remember the model numbers of my old cards, but I don't remember the numbers for my new cards. I guess the "hundreds of slightly different overclock variations" has made me no-longer care :) <cue old man voice>Back in the early days, manufacturers released one, maybe two cards based off a chipset, and that was it</end old man voice>

V3 2000 PCI
Intel Mobo Vid Card
GeForce 5200 LE PCI (Inno 3D)
GeForce 7950 GT (BFG)
ATI 4870 512 (VisionTek)

I quit PC gaming in between V3 2000 PCI and Intel Mobo Vid Card (picked up a Xbox 1) until I started playing WoW, then I quickly got a GeForce 5200 LE to replace the Intel vid card. One day, the GeForce 5200 LE just dies and the 7950 GT is bought. The 4870 512 is picked up because I've got a lot of money saved up and the 7950 GT is showing its age.

Hercules Prophet Kyro II PCI
Voodoo3 3000 PCI
Voodoo5 5500 PCI (still have in an old Win 98 box)
Radeon 9600 Pro AGP
Nvidia 5900 AGP
Radeon X800 XL AGP
Radeon X850 XT AGP (still have in another old PC)
Nvidia 8800 GTX
Nvidia GTX 260 (192)
Nvidia 8800 GTX (yes, the GTX 260 took a dump and I sold the RMA replacement and stuck the 8800 GTX back in).

Like someone else said, I'm not getting rid of the 8800 GTX until GPUs get markedly stronger. I am going to build a new X4 955 BE or i7 920 rig this fall, but the 8800 GTX is going in it for a while. Should see a big boost just from having a better CPU.

hehe, if it makes you feel any better I have a GTX280 in my downstairs PC, which used to have an 8800GTS :p

The nVidia fanboy in me feels better.

The ATi fanboy in me is sad you didn't spring for a HD4870X2 Crossfire setup.

Geforce FX 5200
Biostar 6800
Radeon X1950GT
Radeon X1650 (Was in a computer I bought from a friend. The X1950 wouldn't fit in the case it had, so I left it in the other computer.)
Geforce 9600GT

Some old Trident 4MB PCI card
ATI Rage LT Pro (8MB, in a laptop made by some random company)

ATI Radeon X800 Pro (256MB)
ATI Radeon X1600 Pro (256MB, in a MacBook Pro)
GeForce 8800 GTS (640MB)

Along the way ... at work I had:

ATI Radeon HD 2400 (128MB, in a Dell OptiPlex 755)
ADI Radeon X1600 Pro (256MB, in a Dell OptiPlex 755)

So ... quite a few video cards.

So many cards... aggghhhh.. trying to remember so I'll start from the newest and work my way back.

ATI HD4850 - in sig
ATI HD3870 - in a friends computer now
NV 7900GS - heavily modded and overclocked it 50%
NV 6800GS - in another friends computer now
ATI 9600XT - in brother-in-laws computer now
NV Geforce FX 5200
NV Geforce 3-Ti200
3dfx Voodoo 5-5500 - in retro gaming rig now
Geforce 2mx
3dfx Voodoo 3-3500 - still have laying around
3dfx Voodoo 3-3000
3dfx Voodoo 3-2000 - this may have been in a different computer we had....
3dfx Voodoo Banshee
3dfx Voodoo Rush - returned this one to the store and got the Banshee
Some Diamond 4MB Vesa Local Bus card
S3 Virge DX - yay.. a graphics decelerator
Trident 1MB

Think I got all of them.....

Heres the cards I bought and installed, im sure there was a 4mb s3, and a really basic ati card previous to these
nvidia 5200 agp
7800gt
7800gt sli(only regret on the list)
8800gts 320mb
8800gts 512mb
4850 crossfire
gtx 260(sort of a sidegrade but the 4850 crossfire drivers were broke for a month or so and sold them individually before the fix.)
note progression of my main rig not the mass sum of gpus I have owned

Radeon 9200
Radeon X800XL
Radeon X1950XT

Looking for something new at the moment; the X1950XT's starting to artifact on desktop at stock 3D clocks. Never again, Sapphire and your useless support...

Kinda blurry before the 9600Pro.... but

9600 128mb Pro
9800 128mb Pro (maybe 256mb?)
7950GT in SLI
7950GT (Sold one)
8800GTS 320mb
4850
4870
4870x2
GTX 280

not too excitin...

Some card that I don't remember in a crappy P200mhz
Ati Rage Xpert 16mb
GeForce2 GTS 64mb
Ati 9600 XT 256mb
NV 6800 128mb w/ unlocked pipes
NV 8800 GT 512mb
Ati 4870 512mb
Ati 4850x2 2gb

Thinking about switching to a smaller card now. The 4850x2 is huge at almost 11 1/4'' inches. I want to build a semi portable box.

Hmm....

Voodoo1, I think I got the 6MB one vs the regular 4MB ones.
Matrox G200 which sucked balls.
Voodoo3 the higher end of the 3 at launch.
Geforce4 4600
ATI 9600XT
??????
8800GT
8800GTS512
GT250

There must be something else in there but I'm drawing a blank.

As far back as I can remember:
Geforce 256 SDR
Geforce 2 MX400
Radeon 7500
Geforce 4 Ti4400
Radeon 9600
Geforce 6800GT AGP
Radeon HD4870

Plus a bunch of random low-end PCI cards before that and a few PCs with integrated graphics mixed in. I still have most of these cards around, actually. The 256 died and is sitting in a parts box somewhere, the MX400 is in an old PC, the Ti4400 is sitting in a closet, the 9600 is in another PC, and the 6800GT is being lent to a friend.

Hmmmm, okay.
ATI Rage XL 8MB --> Nvidia FX5200 128MB --> Sapphire X1950XT 512MB --> Visiontek HD4850 512MB

I remember my very first computer was a Compaq which had the ATI Rage graphic card along with 64MB of RAM...
Man...how I totally do NOT miss those days. It had Windows ME installed and I swear, the moment the Ethernet cable was plugged in, 34985769834759834534 spyware, virus, and ad-ware attacks would be recorded by Norton, Zone Alarm, or whatever..

Presario 1700. Im posting on one right now. XP of course now.

Hmm, my progression isn't too long.

3dFX Voodoo Banshee > ATI Rage Mobility > XFX FX5600 256 > EVGA 7800GTX (In use currently) > XFX 4870X2 (Still waiting)
