X-COM Enemy Unknown

You wanted something with freedom and true to the original and yet you like civ 5, hmm something doesn't seem to add up here.

Like how? civ5 has many micro-managing aspects. Your workers can run auto or only improve when directed. Your citizens can be auto focused or manually targeted to industry, agriculture, banking or just unemployed. You can have as many armies as you can support configured as you wish- like all offensive or defensive. You can ignore branches of the tech tree to aim toward specific game winning goals.

Yeah but I guess if there was a paddling pool of TBS games Civ 4 would be in the deep end with Civ 5 much further towards the paddling pool end where the kids play. Gods & Kings didn't change that much either.

I didn't get enough time on Civ4 I guess, my point is, if Civ 5 is a paddling pool, X-Com: Enemy Unknown is a puddle on the sidewalk for depth.

so I had my hesitations, considering the 'dumbed down' aspects of this game compared to the original. but its xcom, so I bit the bullet and bought it

no surprise, its definitely simplified, with more focus on action and the glamour. but it's still damn fun. there's still SOME micromanaging, but not nearly as much as the original.

all in all, if you forget about the insane depth the original had, this is still a very solid game on its own.

anyone else miss the tension you got when an alien fired his plasma blaster at you and you waited in horror as that slow green glob made its way to your favorite soldier?

nah the tension is still there, especially when it's one of your own guys. like if someone gets a flesh wound, or they run into some real scary monster and freak out, turning around to fire blindly at their squadmates in "panic".

protip: check the stats of all your rookies as they rank up, and demote any weak-willed ones to the B team asap. you don't want a clusterfuck of friendly fire when shit starts hitting the fan, things go south real quick this way when you could already be having a tough time.

I'm really starting to progress in the game now. Income is good, have a good squad variety, got satelites in like 4-5 places, with another 4 coming. Research and foundry is going well, panic levels are managable.

Its really nice once all the parts start working correctly. It just seems you need a near perfect run (on normal mode even) to not lose countries near the beginning. Like you are always behind on whats needed.

On higher levels, do you just let some countries slip? Like just lose all of Africa or something so you can focus on defending the other countries?

I try to not any slip if I can. Took on a large supply ship last nite and almost lost one of my firestorms, sent in the other one with the emp cannon and it took minimal damage, emp cannon is awesome cause I can get a lot more alloys and other shit that would've gotten blown up otherwise

Hmmm... I have completely ignored the EMP cannon in favor of plasma. Perhaps I should try one because it seems like I'm always out of alloys.

well you also have to fight more aliens too I think. Sectopods are ridiculous in their dmg output tho.

Also got the fusion lance and remote fusion launcher research option from that large supply ship, lost no soldiers in the assault, yea it was a good haul.

Yes, the idea of X-Com is that not everything is going to perfectly. On harder difficulties and iron-man, you can expect to fail sometimes.

anyone else having really annoying graphics issues during missions with the bigger UFOs? the ground combat is done, but as soon as I enter the UFO I keep having to change sight levels just to see what I'm doing, I keep seeing the roof of the damn UFO.

yea I'm learning now after struggling with a tight budget, early satellite coverage is the way to go. devote more funding to workshops and satellites in the beginning, you'll get more activity to net you more resources and monthly funding. later on when you need to buy more gear to keep up it's real hard to build infrastructure.

this annoys me to no end, just another quirk of their terrible autocam, along with shooting in the wrong direction, aiming at walls, etc.

Getting shot through solid objects...etc.

BTW, just bought this through GMG, was $45, $5 off instant plus had the option of either $5 refund or $10 of GMG store credit. I selected credit during the checkout, but it appears I actually got both? My GMG account shows the $10 credit plus I got an e-mail from PayPal that I got a partial refund, which shows $5 off of the original $44.99, final total being $39.99. Schweet.

How do you capture enemy alive? Im on the second mission and they told me to capture an alien that looks like human, I get close to it but theres nothing on tactical ui to cap it, I even got within 1 square of it only to get shot in the face....

You can't capture an alien yet, even though the scientist says you should try, it's a stupid VO mistake they let slip by.

On your next mission you'll be able to research the "Arc thrower" which is an equippable weapon (goes where you can equip grenades, etc) and you have to be up close to an alien (2 squares) and use it to capture them.

Man, I am so fucked in my current game :(, I have to restart.

Basically dug myself into a hole. I wasn't exactly sur ehow to make money early on base-building wise and I focused more on research/weapons and not so much on satellites.

I ended up getting stuck into not having enough power generators or uplink facilities and only a couple satellites.

I had China, Australia, and Egypth all at the 4th panic level and no missions to help them or anything and next turn they pull out from the council :(.

At least restarting now I'll have a better grasp on what to do and how to build up my base better.

That's a big part of Xcom. I can't even count how many times I restared in the original. And it was fun every time.

So what tactics do you use to capture live aliens? I just built my first Alien Containment and equipped a "red shirt" with the Arc Thrower, though it's as risky to use as the stun rod from the original because you have to get so close. Is it possible to improve the range with research somehow?

I gave my first sniper the Disarm Weapon skill and my heavy the Suppressing Fire skill, so I'm hoping to be able to give my red shirt enough time to get close and stun a Sectoid or something.

Currently playing on Normal Ironman difficulty, so no reloading after botched takedown attempts.

I would wait for crashed or landed ships to capture. In narrow spaces you can get close to them.

But nope, you can't increase it's range. Only upgrade you get is one that makes it more effective, but not terribly much.

Is there any benefit to capping aliens later in the game after you interrogated them already? Can I sell extra caps? Can I sell their weapons? Money is tight in this game.

I don't think you can sell the weapons.. but at least you won't have to build weapons to equip your squad?

A vastly improved Xcom feature there! The original was mildly twitchy about it, Enemy Unknown is full on spastic.

Started using plasma 'nades from that. I guess the first plasma research unlocked them. No point in capturing the same old once your squads are equiped, sell the bodies and get weapon shards for building.

Sniper, Sniper, sniper, psi assault, support and either another support or heavy. Since support can suppress I don't see much use of a heavy. I'm compelled to not randomly blow shit up to maximize corpses and fragments.

The above setup has made most missions pretty easy. Ghost sniper sneak attacks are the best!

Any of you guys use the robotic SHIV units instead of a person in your squad? Thyere expensive so im wondering if therye worth the cost instead of a person. Do they get abilities? Can you equip them with armor and weapons?

So you cant sell live specimens for more money only dead ones? Also, you cant sell extra weapons from captured aliens or ones build by engineers? You can only use weapons and cant sell off extra ones?

They don't get abilities / upgrades or a loadout (You can research a few things like overwatch in the foundry, but not like soldier's skills), can't be healed during combat and have pretty low accuracy.

They do have decent health, good movement range, pretty good damage (for early game weapons), and can be used as partial cover by other guys.

In a 6 man team, I'm willing to carry one as a scout, particularly if I've got a sniper who can shoot at anything in the team's vision; but they're weaker offensively than most of you soldiers will be.

yup

I've read they can be used against the heavy PSI aliens since they're immune. They can upgrade weapon twice and can upgrade to hover. ARC throwers can be upgraded to repair them and I think the drones hacked during combat can do the same.

A rocket can do a butt load of damage, usefull against Mutons, who like to bunch up. 3 for 1 pleez?
edit: also cyberdiscs

Problem with rockets is collateral damage. You have she-bitch complaining about needing that stuff for research..."commander, stop blowing shit up or I'll tell your mommy!!"

Collateral damage can work in your favor. After they've take explosion damage they discover the cover dun bload up too. Follow up with some aimed fire.

Don't listen to them, follow the words of Mick Jager "...some usless information, supposed to fire my imagination, i can't get no...."

you would do well to build an assault/support or 2 just as salvage specialists, tanked up with mobility perks to stockpile anything you have the chance to capture. then every mission you'll have the option to zap any guys within reach, that you would otherwise have killed while destroying their weapons. it saved a ton of money for me that was better spent on engineering and infrastructure, since plasma weapons are pretty much the most expensive and resource consuming gear there is. kitted out all my soldiers for free this way with all the alien rifles, nades, canons, and enough left over to fill orders from other countries for an even bigger profit.

this kind of strategy brings up another obvious shortcoming in the game, inventory and squad management is pretty terrible. could you imagine trying to sort through a full 99/99 barracks of soldiers and all their gear? hope to see some improvement or ui mods to make it all easier to keep track of.

See I wish I would have known that and just used stock weapons until I found and used alien weapons but I did build laser weapons. Now I have 8 obsolete laser weapons in my stockpile because I ended up using alien plasma guns for all my guys later on in the game. Can you hold out and go from stock to plasma weapons that you cap? That way in my next(second) playthrough im not wasting money building my own energy weapons.

Finished normal.

Started impossible. I'm not sure how impossible is beatable. I load save more than once per turn just to keep my men alive. After the second mission (intro mission, base, first encounter from mission control) I picked 1 country, but 2 countries from 2 different continents suddenly were at 5 panic.

Im loving this game so far! Its a quite a challange keeping everything together! Germany and Japan have bailed out of the committie I didnt get my sattellites out fast enough and there wasnt many missions in those regions. I just had an intense firefight with my first encounter of the alien commanders whatever theyere called. They took control of one of mine and shit hit the fan because he was the best outfitted from them all. I lost 3 high ranking officers on last mission! I love the game due to the fact its quite challanging and not very mission is going to go perfectly, you turn the corner or run out too far or an enemy has a lucky nade and your guys are bunched up! SHIT HIT THE FAN!!! Oh yea, im addicted! :D

Finally beat the game on normal(lol). Thinking of beating it on impossible to get ready for a playthrough on hardcore classic.

Really hesitant about impossible though. I've been watching some streams, and well, they get there ass handed to them on the first mission. I can't imagine the first terror mission, or even the later UFOs.

Is it possible to stabilize and capture critically injured aliens? Had an alien that seemed to have been critically injured but not dead yet, because a couple turns after I shot one the message "Alien deceased" popped up over his body.
