X-COM Enemy Unknown

yea reviews are not looking too good so far:

feeling is this will probably just be like some kind of intermediate appetizers for the real dlc/expansions right... at least I'm hoping they will actually come out with something much more substantial later on, that we can buy together in some kind of package. otherwise this is indeed pretty lame, I hope it's not just some last ditch content that didn't make it into the final cut, seeing as modders have been finding all sorts of loose ends in there.

Finally finished the game today, I loved it. To be honest, the game was scarier than most survival horror games. You're going to lose troops and the enemy is always going to have the edge on you up until the last several missions. You always feel outgunned and underpowered. The story was interesting and I really hope there is a sequel. I do miss the alien infiltration missions though. Nothing like having your best squad out and having the squaddies and rookies defending everything you own.

The DLC has been garbage apparently. I hope they add some quality content at some point. I just started a game on ironman mode, having fun so far.

One of my favorite games of this year. Never played the old one and didn't have too much experience with games like this.

The beginning can be absolutely murder if you don't make the right choices and the game doesn't do much to hold your hand as the aliens start raping you if you don't have satellites.

That said, those first terror missions with the Chryssalids for the first time nearly had me shitting myself. Great game.

Anyone else enjoying the new Second Wave patch? I feel like it adds a lot more replay value and makes the combat more intense since it's so random now. Although it can get pretty frustrating at times.

Here's a little screenshot of a supposed bug when you hunker down on I/I. Needless to say that campaign ended after those patrols showed up:

W T H ??? Do you get a 'Broken Arrow' ability to counter?

Just bought this via the Amazon.com X-Com bundle that includes all the original XCom games and Enemy Unknown. Having a blast playing it.

However I do want some advice. Is it more beneficial to take money as a reward early on or are having scientists better? I'm asking because I read that if you pick the wrong reward too many times, it will dig you into a hole later on.

Any advice?

Btw, I really am enjoying this game!

Definitely better to grab as many scientists and engineers as possible early on as they accelerate the speed of research and construction projects, which in turn are critical to being able to upgrade soldier gear/weapons and building key facilities. That in turn will assist you to launching satellites ASAP which are key to beating the campaign.

It's really up to you. There's no bad way to go about it. I usually go after money, unless I don't need it, then I go after engineers. I only go after money at the beginning to get more satellites so I can launch them as needed. Engineers is to make it so you can build workshops which will help you a lot in rebates.

That.... seems like a really easy battle to be honest. 2 grenades would take out most of that.

Not when you hunker down to end the turn and only then does the mob spawn in and gets to make their move right away :). That bug is long fixed by now though.

It's almost always better to take engineers until you hit critical mass on them (40+).

You can take a lump sum of $200 from the abduction mission which you're then gonna have to spend $130 on a workshop to rush engineers anyways to get adequate satellite coverage on Classic and Impossible difficulty. However, the workshop eats up one of your facility slots so you'll have to excavate more often which costs money ($10, $20, $40, $80 per square as you move down and out) and power to excavate a new level. Then you'll also have to pay a monthly upkeep on the workshop ($26) in addition to the power requirements for the workshop which will require you to build more power plants ($60) which also requires more excavation slots, money, and monthly upkeep ($10). Not to mention you have to plan a lot more carefully in order to get your excavation done in time, your power management, the time to build a power plant, the time to build a workshop, the time to build a satellite uplink, and build satellites in order to get your sats up before the end of each month.

Or you can just take the engineer reward from the abduction mission and save yourself extra excavation slots, workshop slots, power plant slots, monthly upkeep, build your satellite uplink sooner, your satellites sooner, and get all your engineering purchases such as satellites, foundry upgrades, weapons, accessories all much sooner and cheaper.

I've watched some gameplay recently and am thinking about picking it up. It looks fairly complicated to get into though. Can this be played and enjoyed casually?

As pothb says, on easy you can play it quite casually. You get plenty of money, it nerfs the aliens, and it cheats for you: Any time one of your guys gets hit the aliens get a penalty to hit them with another shot and any time one of your guys miss there's a boost to hit the next shot. Makes it pretty easy even if you execute bad strategies and such.

It's really not that complicated once you learn how to order your guys an dhow the cover/commands work.

Also it's very easy to pick up, do a mission, then quit and come back and start later.

I really enjoy this game, its addictive but it can be frustrating when you lose a squadmember that is leveled up really well or your entire squad wipes out.
