World Community Grid

World Community Grid: World Community Grid Moves to IBM Cloud
On May 15, World Community Grid will begin migrating to IBM Cloud, as part of an effort to modernize and enhance our infrastructure capabilities. Our system will be unavailable for approximately 48 hours while the migration takes place, but otherwise the move will not affect most volunteers.

Sorry... but not officially if you are able to do it...lol

For some reason, I was convinced there was a badge beyond 100 years, so I continued to focus on MCM ... oops. I guess I'll get to 250 yrs then spread the love :p

Switch over to FAAH v1 for our challenge that ends on the 30th then you can go back to MCM. :p

Lost my two 2P Intel Rigs. They've gone on to do regular old computer stuff. Such a waste, lol.

Just my 4P for WCG. Trimming down the GPU farm, too, to make room for a new rig in September with 1080 Ti cards. Probably going to stick with a new 2P build 2011 v3. Should have enough PCI-E lanes that I could load it with 4 cards if they ever come out with a decent dual-slot card that doesn't get choked out from the card next to it, otherwise 2 or 3 in that rig. I considered watercooling because I know there will be a single slot wc 1080 Ti coming soon, but I don't really want the added expense or the inability to resell easily.

I shut off most of my rigs for the summer. Only power what I need during a Formula Sprint. Otherwise I keep one 4p running and 3 GPUs.

Have you found a good deal on a 2p setup with plenty of x16 lanes?

Think you could help us with the upcoming LHC@Home sprint today at 4pm est?

If I just have to change the project, sure. If this requires constant attention, I can't provide that. As far as the 2P goes, yeah, I'm going with the board I put in the thread. It's not too expensive considering. And I'll save money by using a case that has spots for two power supplies, so I don't have to get one enormous one.

Yeah, just change to the project and let her work.

Ill have to visit that thread again. I need an Intel 2p rig.

Ok, give me any config I need for the team and I'll try to switch before my daughter wakes up. I can't find the team on the search page.

No special config. Here is a post I made in Genmay.

We got a new 3-day sprint coming up tomorrow. This one is LHC@Home. This project runs on CPUs and most of the projects utilize VirtualBox, however installing VB is complicated. You can run it without VB installed and it'll run the SixTrack projects only. If you want help installing and getting VB setup as well then I recommend dropping a post in our Distributed Computing sub forum for help on that topic. I wont be of much use and I apologize.

Download the BOINC client here: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php
Virtual Box is only required for some of the projects, but not all of them. You can install the regular client without VB.

Setup your account through the BOINC client. Just search for LHC@Home. Create account (or if you went to the link above and created an account already then just login with it, email is the username)

Then go here to login: https://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/home.php

This is the team page you need to join: https://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/team_display.php?teamid=2319

Sprint lasts for 3 days. So run it until the weekend.

Sprint officially starts at 4PM EST.

We are currently in 2nd place in the Marathon for this project. I do not think we will overtake 1st place with this sprint as I doubt we'll be able to generate enough points for 3 days to over come that gap, but we sure can get a lot closer.

I switched projects, suspended WCG, and put all 48 cores on LHC, but although it's got 48 tasks running, it's only using 10% of the total CPU speed available. Any ideas?

I'm not sure how to tell. Virtualbox is installed, as it came with BOINC when I first installed it. It looks like all of the running tasks are Six Track, though. I looked at my settings, and everything should allow it to run 100%.

Windows or Linux?
Are you sure it's running all 48 tasks and some aren't just waiting to run?

Windows Server 2008 R2. Yes, all 48 tasks are in the running status, all started right after each other. All have about 50 minutes of computing time, with about 56 minutes remaining.

That running time is similar to my 4P running times as well. I disabled the network communication on mine until 4PM EST. So when those tasks are done they wont upload immediately. After 4PM I intend to grant network connectivity so they'll dump the load right after the sprint starts. Not saying you need do to that as I am sure you are probably busy, but if you can it'll help.

Otherwise, just leave it alone and let it run for as long as you want.

I think you have your stuff hidden as it says I am unable to handle request when I click that link.

This is your completed tasks.

Looks like they are running more than 50 seconds and you're getting credit for completing them. I'll just leave it alone.

You're already at 1305 points for the day and you started sometime this morning.

I don't know how to unhide it. Also, looked at the LHC preferences. Max CPUs was set to 1. I changed it to unlimited. That might alter the status. I'll wait a few minutes and update again.

Those preferences should be ignored I believe. It's most likely reading the local config. Doesn't hurt to change it however.

Ok. I'll check again in an hour after the next round of projects completes. Any other sub-projects I should be running? Six track is the only default item selected.

You have to have VirtualBox installed to run the other projects. If you have it installed then I think ATLAS returns the most points.

I do have it installed. Does it run automatically or does it require manual intervention?

MGMCCALLEY does your event log have this:

6/22/2017 12:23:16 PM | LHC@home | <![CDATA[Message from server: VirtualBox is not installed]]>

If it doesn't then VB should be good to go I would imagine.

If VBox is installed and you have the virtualization options turned on in the BIOS (many older systems had it disabled by default for some stupid reason) then all you would need to do is make sure those applications are checked at the project preferences page.

I don't use the version that comes with BOINC as it is outdated. I typically either install the newest version or whatever version the project recommends.

This doesn't seem very straightforward. I only have remote access until tomorrow morning. No BIOS access until then. I don't know if virtualization is on or not. I restarted the computer and seemingly every LHC task just restarted from scratch, didn't save a thing. Also, still not using effectively more than 4 cores out of 48. I'm guessing Six Track also uses virtualization? I have an enormous amount of conhost.exe tasks running in task manager, and at a glance an equal number of six track processes. None of them really seem to be doing anything, all sitting at 0%. I'll let it run until tomorrow morning, but I'm guessing this has been a waste of time thus far.

Don't know. I'm not running it right now. And that can be tricky at times to figure out. When I had a borrowed 4P from sc0tty8, it ran on all cores fine. But that was a year or so ago.

It's running on all my cores 100%, but I am running Linux and not Windows on my 4P boxen.

Your credits so far seems to be inline with that you should be getting from a 4P rig.

Therefore I do not think you've been wasting your time. Maybe tinkering with it has proven to be waste less maybe, but you've contributed over 1300 points since you've started. Lets say that's half a day worth of credits. So 2600 points per day would be a good boost on our team for sure.

Overall team points yesterday were 2k points and the day before that was 1.2k points. Our biggest competitor did 14k two days ago, 18k yesterday and they're sitting at 23k today.
