Windows 8.1 update

Don't know, but I just installed Windows 8.1 HALLELUJAH, NOTHING GOT FUCKED UP.

I purchased a retail copy of Windows 8.1 for my new build (sig). Enjoying it thus far. I tested the 8 to 8.1 update on a VM and it went very smoothly. I tested it on a VM first so I could make sure I could redirect libraries to a different drive, as folks who did that on 8 and then upgraded to 8.1 got hosed pretty hard.

Very happy, can I be one of the few folks that enjoys Windows 8.1? :D

I like it on my laptop with StartIsBack. Very optimized and smooth. Although I'm still getting used to the "This PC" name change.

I've been using Win 8.1 starting this weekend with Stardock's Start8 start button...no complaints so far. Not having the start menu was a major annoyance for the first few hours after I upgraded until I found out about it.

The biggest annoyance about upgrading to 8.1 from 8 is that Microsoft hijacked my computer and now requires me to use my msn account to login to my own computer. Ummm wtf?

You don't have to do that.

MS certainly went about this little detail underhandedly, I won't argue with that.

So when opening IE I got a NAG BUTTON saying "Do you want to upgrade to 8.1 =)
Jesus....

I think I might if they have all the problems fixed now.....

I went to Nvidia's site and they had 8.0 or 8.1 windows dirvers selection I kinda feel out of the club without having 8.1. I'm really going to miss Windows experience index though.

did the windows 8.1 upgrade. Took as long as a regular install.
Thought it would only reinstall the app from the app store but it actualy kept all my programs and all the bookmarks and what not.

only thing was that having to sign in with a microsoft account instead of the local i had.
until u realise that you needed to click on create an account and then click on use local account

had to reboot for the sound to work in games .... other than that, smooth sailing.

3.5gb update for each pc/devices if u don't download the iso? seriously ...

I've been on 8.1 for a few days. It won't recognize any usb drives unless I assign a letter to them in disk management. There is no auto assign.

OK I fixed that running a command prompt that enabled auto detect.

The main thing I don't like now is that photos in a folder cant be moved and arranged randomly. If (say) a person took 50 photos at a football game - and the folder they were in had the before and after game parking lot tailgating photos mixed in with game photos - a person can't move and arrange the photos with same subject in the same folder. I could do this in XP and Vista.

Well spoke too soon... after closing down for the night , windows would freeze starting up.
the lil circle made of white dots would freeze.

Only way to fix it is was to disable fast startup under choose what the power button does. (and enjoy some slower boot times)

and yet it worked in windows 8. :(

Just a nub question. If I have a Windows 8 upgrade edition can I still get the 8.1 download?
Also this whole hassle of installing Win 7 then Win 8 and then Win 8.1 is going to be bad.
Also with Windows 8 my PC broke (went into the perpetual blue screen issue).

I got my windows 8.1 from a Windows 8 upgrade disk. There is a registry hack to just do a clean install from the upgrade disk. Then you have to gather all the updates reboot then download 8.1.

i went xp>w8 pro windows media center> 8.1 via the store (3.5gb download)

if u can t access the pc, might be smidge hard to make the update without the iso.
u'd need a usb key/cd to boot from with windows 8 install to try a repair or just skip that
and get 8.1 iso from microsoft.
If u got a valid windows 8 key(upgrade or not doesnt matter) u can download it
from microsoft.

Anyone having a problem with the intel chipset software? I have a Z87-A board and when I go to intels site to auto detect my chipset drivers, it tells me unknown chipset. Even though I have the drivers installed. Anyone else having this problem?

I haven't heard of this issue before, and typically you shouldn't have to go out to get the chipset drivers, at least I don't. Maybe get the ones from your motherboard maker or something? As far as the video, there could be tons of issues, first being that you are probably having chipset driver issues.

I've installed the ones from Asus and also downloaded the latest ones from Intel. Both sets show up as unknown when running the auto detect tool from Intels website.

I fixed the display issue. Was a problem with dpi set to medium. Changed it to smaller 100% and that fixed it.

Yes, I'm using a Z77-55K and the auto detect says the same thing for me.

You have to do it the old-fashioned way and click around the frustrating download page setup to find all the new drivers.

Yeah I've installed both from Asus's website and Intels. Both sets of drivers show up as unknown.

:(

To give a little background to my viewpoint, I've been playing with a lot of different OS/Guis recently.
Multiple flavors of Linux (Gnome/KDE/Etc), Mountain Lion, Mavericks, iOS7, Android and Windows 7.

I decided to say the hell with it, and try out 8.1 on Monday night. Installed my copy of 8, and upgraded via the store. Other then having to remove my STX due to driver issues, it went very smoothly. The live tile thing isn't bothering me as much as it did the first time I played with 8. My wireless network is working much faster, boot times are much MUCH faster. I haven't run across any problems in any of my Steam games or WoW.

I did install one of the Store games last night though (Some action RPG type game), and it was pretty horrible. Pretty obvious is was meant for tablets, and the graphics upscaled. This being said, my long term plan is to build a very nice Steam OS box, and move the wife and myself to an OSX platform for daily use.

Upgrade went smoothly on my desktop but on my laptop it started spitting out false drive error notifications and want to do a scan. After doing a scan with no problem found it pops up the notification again. Have to break down and do a clean install.

I know I'm beating a dead horse, but why the hell does Windows still compress wallpapers in JPEG format?

I upgraded to 8.1 from 8 today and it went very smooth. I will say though I was expecting to see some noticeable changes and I am just not seeing it. Not really any different looking at it compared to 8 except for the Windows icon in the bottom left of the screen for fast switching.

the reason is simple, that is exactly what 8.1 is: windows 8 with with the "new" start button and all the fixes in one pack with maybe a bit of optimizing to make it a bit zippier.
