Windows 7 Beta Goes Public

Isnt there a way to beta test this where you get a copy at the end of testing, like they did with Vista and XP?

Why do you need 32-bit for iTunes? Should work in 64-bit...

Last time I tried, iTunes 64bit wasn't complete. It would install just fine, but when I tried to sync my phone, it said that I should install the 64bit version (which it was).

Itunes works fine on 64bit win 7

I've ran the 64-bit version of iTunes (I believe only the drivers are 64-bit), since about February, 2008. I've used it with an iPhone, iPod Classic, and iPhone 3G without issue. You might have had an issue when the 32-bit version tried to install some 32-bit drivers. Also, one of the previous updates to iTunes had some nice BSOD 64-bit drivers (fortunately I never experienced it).

Yes you are all correct, but in regard to Windows 7 Maximus is correct. iTunes 64 does install in Win 7 but the Apple Mobile Device Support Drivers don't install correctly, thus not letting you sync a phone. This issue wasn't present in Vista x64 which i believe you meant when you said your phone synced Blackforge.

Im not sure if this issue is still present in Build 7000 but it was in build 6802 (?) which is the previously leaked one, so i didnt want to take the chance of it not working and use x64 for build 7000 as i dont think iTunes compatibility was on the top of microsofts lists of things to do :)

But just in case the driver still doesnt work for the people who do want to sync their phone in x64 Win 7, there is a way to get the drivers working. To do so, you just have to copy over the folder containing the driver installed on a Vista x64 install to your Win 7 install. Then after you connect your phone, just go into device manager, right click your phone, hit install driver, and point it to your Vista x64 installed driver and Win 7 should do the rest. :)

If anyone does need help with this, just ask and ill right up a more clear tutorial with links to everything required :)

Hope This Helps!

I am happy to report that it now works in Build 7000. I was using 6801 when I had trouble before. Everything works exactly as it show now. Well, except for that "If you want to sync your iPhone with a new computer, it has to be erased" thing. That's just poor planning on Apple's part.

is there a better sauce for the download. this crappy ms download manager thing wont work. i have my key, just need to .iso.. .grrr crappy unreliable ms website.

microsoft need to start hosting their website on linux ffs... get over your whole microsoft is best for everything crap... best for desktops, yes.. best for servers, no fucking way.

ah good to hear, but i might not be getting a new hard drive for my desktop soon, so i guess i have to wait a few weeks to try out Win 7

And its good to hear it works, and i agree the syncing with different computer crap pisses me off too, which is why i just gave up and installed a music player from Cydia and now i just i just usb over all my songs without any of iTunes bull crap and slow speeds :)

32 bit: http://download.microsoft.com/downl...00_client_en-us_Ultimate-GB1CULFRE_EN_DVD.ISO

64 bit: http://download.microsoft.com/downl...0_client_en-us_Ultimate-GB1CULXFRE_EN_DVD.ISO

Those links are still valid, if not a bit slow because of the number of people hitting them. I just tried them in IE7 on one machine, IE8 on another, Firefox 2, Firefox 3, Opera 9.5, Avant, and even IE7 Pro, and each one loaded without issue just by left-clicking the link - it started almost instantly for each one, a direct download of each ISO without a single issue.

If you're having any difficult with those links, then something is wrong with your setup or you're running something that shouldn't be. I can't say why some people are having issues, but I've tested those links like 75 times in the past 2 days and not one time have they not worked and offered me the download at a consistent 750KB/s or higher speed from start to finish.

Good luck...

Problem is not getting them to work its getting them to last until the download completes at least for me. They keep dying. Hopefully fifth times the charm.

I snagged the 64-bit version of Friday from the links we posted...speedy. I grabbed the 32-bit version this morning and it was still pretty damn fast.

Same here, hit the x64 download link as soon as it's posted and it consistently topped my download speed of 770kb/s all the way to the end.

need advice

I have both versions downloaded, which should i use ?

I currently use xp32 but my processor is 64bit compatible, its a p4 3ghz.

I have allot of family photos and video that are on my hd and a backup hd, will these still be accessible and usable or do i have to convert everything to 64 bit if i go that route ?

thanks

Almost all 32-bit software will work on 64-bit operating systems. Most exceptions are video editors and sound editors which interfaces with required 64-bit drivers.

If you have a 64-bit processor, give it a try! But always make sure you back up your stuff anyways, not just because you're trying 64-bit, but also because Windows 7 is beta.

thanks, I was just worried that using 64 bit might screw with all my photos

is there any benefit by using the 64 bit ?

"Hey guys, I'm just wondering, call me a noob if you wish, but how can I install this without burning it to a dvd? I got a key and dl'ed it, but I just realized its an ISO meant to be burnt to a dvd... I don't have a dvd burner. I figured maybe a flash drive, but it's like 3.6 gb, and I don't have any media that size. Could I burn it to multiple CD's??? Any ideas welcome!!!"

Mount it with Daemon tools:D

Just as long as he is using vista 64bit or xp64bit. Otherwise you can't use daemon tools in the bios. Unless I'm wrong.

I kinda doubt it'd matter what server they were using. Hammer a server with excessive traffic, and things come to a crawl.

Besides, isn't it Akamai that's hosting the data?

Regardless, your complaint reminds me of all the people who bitched about Ticketmaster having problems when a mega band has tix going on sale.

Then when the band plays at a venue serviced by a different carrier, things are no better (and sometimes worse) and a few actually realize that that's just the way it is.

But if you don't like that analogy, then try calling up your radiostation when they're looking for the 10,000 caller to win $10,000. If you're lucky, you'll get a busy signal.

The two best benefit of 64-bit over 32-bit are stability and memory address. You will be able to go over 4gb of RAM with 64-bit.

But of course stability can apply to any software depending on the skills of the programmer.

I only have 1.5 gig of ram, should I stick with the 32 bit intill I get more ram ?

Why waste the time? At least if you use 64bit., all u gotta do is slap the ram in. If you did the 32bit version, you would have to re-install windows after you installed it to fully utilize the 4gb of ram.

People are under this mistaken impression that x64 requires twice the space, twice the RAM, twice the CPU power, etc. That's incorrect. x64 does require a bit more hard drive space as the actual 64 bit OS is slightly larger, but nowhere near twice the size. As far as CPU requirements, if your CPU is 64 bit capable, that's all that matters.

In terms of RAM, more is better, but that can be said for 32 bit OSes as well, up to the 4GB limit that's addressable by a 32 bit version of Windows (save for some special editions, namely 2K3 Datacenter, etc). As far as Windows 7 x64, it's leaner at the Desktop after the installation than Vista x64 is, soooo...

1.5GB for Windows 7 x64 is just fine for day to day use, seriously. I've got Win7 installed on an old ThinkPad, a t23, Pentium 3 1.13 GHz with 768MB of PC133 RAM and a 30GB 4200 rpm hard drive, crappy S3 graphics on a 14.1" 1024x768 LCD.

It works great. Seriously. No Aero support, obviously, but the basic OS functionality is there, and that Pentium 3 1.13 (Tualatin based) is damned snappy...

You'll be fine with x64, so get to it.

Bullshit! 32 x 2 = 64, thus twice the size! :p

hehe

If that were absolutely true, Windows 7 x64 content on the installation DVD would be... oh... 4.86GB since the x86 installation DVD is 2.43... which would mean you couldn't fit the x64 installation content on a single layer DVD... which would mean something is seriously wrong... which would mean...

As it is, the x86 ISO is 2.43GB and the x64 is 3.15GB soooooooooo... you figure it out. :D

I think it depends when you're going to go over 4GB of ram. On a typical computer, you'll get between 3-3.5gb of addressable ram on a 32bit system. Unless you're going to 6 or 8GB, I don't think there' much benefit to going to x64.

With that said, given the price of ram, I don't htink there's much reason not get 8GB of RAM. At one point last october or november I think I saw deals where you could get 8gb for under $50.00. But then I run XP in a virtual machine and sometimes more than one, so using in excess of 5GB isn't unusual.

Photoshop CS4, I believe, is now addresses capable of addressing more than 4gb of ram, so that's another app where it'd help.

For now, I'd go with x32. It's a beta, so reinstalling when you have the ram isn't abig deal. in 3 or 4 months, you'll reinstall to use RC1 anyway.

Thinking ahead, good man. ;)

must say.. im absolutely loving Windows 7, aside from not having drivers for my crappy usb tv tuner, and crappy RDP v7 not being compatible with the latest build of XRDP (meaning no firefox on my gentoo box for dodgy website browsing), now i have to use ssh for all my backup fileserver access... grrrrrrrr... but the new UI is awesome.. i love the grouping of taskbar so you can easily find which window you're after and how in the list on the start menu of frequently used programs it lists all the media youve opened with that program recently.. had a few problems installing a couple of games.. but yes.. im settled in.. and well its now my primary OS... big tick from me...

Same here. I'm enjoying Windows 7 save for some odd Windows Explorer and Internet Explorer hangs which I think might be related to Norton 360 v3 beta I have running on it. That app will be removed later today and I'll put some other AV software on there.

Just out of curiosity, which games did you have problems installing and if you were eventually successful, what did you do to get them to work? I've only tried Steam games, WoW, and I installed but have not played Devil May Cry4 and Prince of Persia.

I had a problem with GTA4 installing... you cant install it via Autorun, you have to run setup.exe (in compatibility mode), then you have to install Games for Windows separately. game runs fine tho in native mode.

Got it running nice, easy, fast. I am using an old spare HD thats been showing SMART error for some time.

Proc: Athlon 64 X2 3800 (2ghz stock settings) on 939 DFI NF4
2 gig Mushkin 184 pin
EVGA 7800
SB AUdigy 2ZS plat

Havn't f'd with it much yet, but what I've done I really liked. Like I said, install was fast-n-easy. I havn't f'd with Vista much yet either, so it's hard for me to compare. It definately looks, and behaves like Vista. I tried Fallout 3 and that ran great, with no crashes. I'm gonna try an older game next (Battlefield 1942/FH mod) and the media center. Since my XP install is in dire need of a CI, I am going to out a copy of Vista, so that'll be good for comparison. Glad I waited. I can't wait to run this on the next build!

well my dumbass infected myself trying to use an IRC search engine I used to use back in the day. What better motivation tostart over. Thank god for my iPod Touch. I'm typing this post with it now. I had a mess of a windows install and most of my data is on my archive drive. I love that in XP you change the location source of My Documents. I'm installing this forreal without vmware. I have it loaded on a Dell Optiplex 755 at work and it is pretty snappy. It found everything from the jump and IE8 is actually pretty impressive. I might forego Chrome depending on how well it runs as my primary browser. There is a shitload of info in this thread and so far everyone has mentioned all of the programs I was considering using as working with some minor changes of course. The only thing I have to prolly try on my own is vmware, just in case one of my keygens don't work. Hehe.

Not really something you should be admitting to or even mentioning around here... warez is a serious taboo... :(

Oh iwas just kidding about that. But I do wanna see if vmware works though. I also meant to post this in the other thread where the statement about people posting info about software working would be valid. Bad joke and wrong thread, my life sucks. LOL. I forgot to unhook my legal mp3 drive before setup so I hope they don't get hosed before I apply the patch.

just installed on my sis's laptop and after the struggle to get all the ethernet and wireless together, everything took off just like 6801 and im enjoying Win 7 once again :)

The only thing i dont like is that when im scrolling using the track pad, the new Aero feature randomly kicks in full screening my window when i dont even want to :(

Besides that i think Win 7 is a great upgrade from Vista. And yes, im one of those people who bought Vista (Ultimate :)) right when it came out, and against what people say, i loved it. Im looking to go pickup Win 7 the day it comes out also :)

Woulda edited my earlier post, but it's disabled.

My spare HD finally gave up the ghost. I knew it would, once I gave it a good reason to fail. I had to reinstall, and for some reason the second time though didn't seem as smooth. I am having trouble getting my nvidia ethernet driver and a pci devise (soundblaster audigy) driver to load right. I keep getting error message if I go through action center, and troubleshoot.

Anyone running a similar SC? I am running soundblaster audigy 2zs. Im gonna try the Vista drivers from Creative next. Though I have ethernet error, i can get online. No test on connection speed, but it seems slower. My sc on the other hand sounds terrible. I've also got a Marvel Yukon etherent jack I could try, but I saw a post elsewhere where someone was having trouble with that one too.

havent been able to get a copy of 7, 4 times downloaded from 2 different houses and I still get corrupt isos....

Have you tried Windows Update? I couldn't find any of the drivers for my sis's toshiba laptop at first, but when i did, most of them gave errors or wouldn't install. I then gave a quick look at Windows Update and it already figured out what all my hardware was, which drivers were needed, and how to do it. All i did was hit Install, wait a couple minutes, restart, and everything, sound, wireless, screen res, etc started to work flawlessly

Hope this Helps! :)

Are you using the direct links? If so, you should give the Microsoft Download page a try using their download manager. I got my copy from that, then used a usb to get it to a comp with a dvd burner, burned at 4x with UltraISO, and it installed perfectly. I heard somewhere that microsofts download manager auto checks the md5 and such to make sure its all fine, though i dont remeber where i hear it

Hope you get Win 7 up and working soon :)
