Why Microsoft Redesigned Windows

You don't HAVE to use the touchscreen features. When sitting down, I'm all about the mouse and keyboard. But if I'm up moving around and doing other stuff. I would love to have the ability to just reach out and touch a few things
Yeah, that's an obvious win for touch. It's why I occasionally reach for the iPad to do something very quickly when I'm relatively close to a PC: touch tends to be easier and faster for a certain subset of tasks. But I think the message Microsoft is trying to send is that KB/M interaction is really playing second fiddle to touch, which isn't true at all in the vast majority of typical usage scenarios. Note how she used the word "puppeteering" to describe mouse interaction, which is a word that seems to have a negative connotation in this context.

Microsoft's invested so heavily in the touch aspect of Windows 8 that they have to really try to sell you on that end of the experience, by portraying touch as a sort of magic bullet for interaction on every kind of device imaginable. For desktop PCs and laptops, the potential win is actually fairly marginal.

I find it particularly humorous that at the time that touch-screens are gaining popularity, mechanical keyboards have done the same. I just see a certain amount of irony in that both can claim how touch is better for interaction, but only one is actually tactile.

she looks very much like my fav ex-wife

unfortunate that such wrongheadedness can be so attractively packaged

I like her answers and I like Windows 8! :p I was very skeptical at first but after having it for a few weeks I really like what they have done. Feels and runs great!

Actually the quote mentions three points, the first two (bolded below) are about computing generally; only the last is specifically about windows.

When Windows was first created 25 years ago, the assumptions about the world and what computing could do and how people were going to use it were completely different. It was at a desk, with a monitor

PLUS, someone won't use their finger. They'll use their pen or such on the LCD, either scratching it or otherwise damaging it. This is just a case of not thinking things through all the way... Hopefully the newer screens will be more like touchpads and better protected, but this won't stop some kid from trying it on a non touch screen.

Tablet PCs and touch screen have been around for sometime. Not sure why a person would use an ordinary pen on touchscreen device. I could see perhaps someone using an ordinary pen say on pen capable tablet. But I've not heard of cases where people were writing on their Galaxy Note devices with a regular pen.

Not really sure what that means.

It's just a PR statement about Windows 8. Not some "bridge to the 21st century" speech. The whole article is pretty much just a PR statement about Windows 8 and their mobile product line.

Even the Waterbear is falling asleep.

I don't hate the ribbon.

And unlike most yammer faced opinioned folks here I actually own a Surface RT device and it's pretty nice. The Plex client is awesome.

Web browsing on it totally crushes my Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Nexus 7. Like a bug. It's no contest. Chrome on Android with my N7 is a joke compared to IE10 on Surface. Both are Tegra 3 devices and the N7 is running JellyBean. It take's MSFT three versions to get it right (according to the lore) but GOOG is on V4 and the web experience is still shit.

However, the Windows Store is a wasteland of Visual Studio template apps. It really is.

My main beef is the stuff Julie and company tossed under the bus. DVD playback. Buggy ass Media Center add-on with no bug fixes and added regressions. The out of the box media experience on Windows 8 is complete shit.

The SurfaceRT devices also have some Windows desktop baggage. You cannot connect to a A2DP device for audio. WTF? Derp. Derp.

So, opinion of an actual Surface owner: nice device. Nice UI. Fast. Great web browsing. App store wasteland.

Welcome to the post-PC world! Too bad it sux worse on the desktop than the prior Windows version, which was actually pretty nice.

/says user of tablet PCs as primary productivity system for the last 3 years

Yes, yes, yes! I don't know how anyone can say Chrome on the Nexus 7 is good.

This will probably and hopefully be the only time I speak in favor of Apple:

Where MS is screwing themselves and Apple isn't is the mobile vs. desktop OS. I haven't used Windows 8, and by the images I have seen of it I never will. I hate all of the colors. Powder blue, pink (fucking pink!?), purple? I'm sure this connection has been made before but it would appear that "Metro" is short for... metrosexual? Because I love to stare at pastel pink and purple shit just so I can write a paper for school or send an email or do any of the myriad things I use my desktop for. I have an Android tablet, which is much less pink, purple and like the toys people want to sell my younger children and I refuse to let in my house. I It sucks for writing on, and it's an Asus Transformer with a whizbagholyshitfantastic (read fucking garbage marketing BS POS) keyboard and I'd still rather go bungee jumping with the cord tied to my nuts than use it for writing anything real, anything beyond "LOL you got props, yo " on facebook or whatever horseshit people use these days to spam the internet/humanity/world/cosmos/creation with the mundane minutia of their uninspired lives. It's really great for "surfing the web", reading emails and the like. It's absolutely a consumption device. As far as I can tell the Mac desktop platform is little better but it does allow one to use Adobe products, preform video editing and so on, in a productive fashion. Oh, and it's also UNIX friendly, but that shouldn't be a perk since all unix devotee's should be running LINUX because it's free. MAC is the opposite of free in that they cost much more than they are worth because they are not selling a product as much as a fashion statement. And those UNIX lovers of Mac should STFU about the interface and either use Windows or contribute and make the Linux interface what they want.

If MS keeps this trend going I hope they croak and let something more innovative and less offensive take over. Maybe they have had their day and it ended wit the touch device. Are they retarded? Who didn't know over a decade ago that touch devices were going to make their way into the lives of the average 1st world citizen?

Windows 8 is clearly designed with touch in mind, and many new Windows 8 PCs have touch screens. Why is touch so important?

"It’s a very natural way to interact. If you get a laptop with a touch screen, your brain clicks in and you just start touching what makes it faster for you. You’ll use the mouse and keyboard, but even on the regular desktop you’ll find yourself reaching up doing the things that are faster than moving the mouse and moving the mouse around. It’s not like using the mouse, which is more like puppeteering than direct manipulation".

You poor Misguided woman. Why don't you take your Vagina and your touch screens and go design the drapes for your living room somewhere else.

I don't think you get it.

She envisions a future where people work 8-12 hours a day completely on touch screens.

She's a visionary.

From the article:
Windows 8 throws out design features familiar to Windows users since 1995, swapping in simpler, bolder interfaces designed to be operated using a touch screen.

In other words, Microsoft designed this OS for fucking morons.
Damn, this is making OS X look 1337.

Yeah, because on Windows 8 programs like Word, Excel, Photoshop, Auto CAD, Visual Studio, Eclipse, etc. work exactly with a mouse and keyboard like they always have with prior versions of Windows?

She is a loony.

I want to post that crazy to hot sake for women in response to this, but I'm posting from a touch device and it is too much hassle.

I had a good comment earlier half typed, but I got on a phone call and forgot about it and when I remembered there were to many replies. Plus it was pretty sexist and offensive and likely just would of gotten me banned.

We Linux-users are still enjoying the desktop experience, all 12 of us! :p

They work the same, but very few individuals will be utilizing all of these programs with touch-screen functions.

You know, there's silly games like Angry Birds on a touchscreen but I really can't imagine playing Borderlands 2 or something with rapidfire on a touchscreen. What's this gal think about gaming and touchscreen win 8 pcs ?

If that's true, why bother with the touch interface?

What about feline Linux users?

Heh, and don't forget we'll all have silicone tipped fingers that end at a micron thick so we can more precisly press shit instead of relying upon luck that it registers the correct thing 2cm's to the left of where we actually touched the screen.

And once again, a "great Microsoft thread" descends into the bowels of Linux.
