Windows chief Julie Larson-Green explains why Microsoft redesigned Windows. Heh, this ought to be good. ;)

Larson-Green took over the role a few weeks ago, after Microsoft veteran Steven Sinofsky left amid rumors of personal disputes with other Microsoft executives. However, Larson-Green has long been a senior figure inside the Windows division and even took the lead on drawing up the first design brief for Windows 8. An expert in technical design, she also led the introduction of the novel, much copied “ribbon” interface for Microsoft Office, widely acknowledged as a major improvement in usability.

At least she takes responsibility for two Microsoft missteps, while also drawing a picture that Windows will be heading in the wrong direction for several years. Someone get Ballmer a chair.

When Windows was first created 25 years ago, the assumptions about the world and what computing could do and how people were going to use it were completely different. It was at a desk, with a monitor.

FWIW she didn't claim nobody used monitors; rather pointed out that the mentality previously was that computing primarily was done at a desk with a monitor, whereas that's not true anymore.

Guess I don't hate 8, but I'm not using it day to day either. And, I'll be picking up a few copies before the deals expire in Jan.

But I can't be convinced out of this fact which is that MS spent a metric ton of money to develop Aero on 7 only to scrap it in 8. That tells me they got caught with their pants down when this whole fuzzy tablet market s'ploded.

P.S. Not sure Julie could have babies. Can't find the Start Menu. :D
 
I personally don't think the "ribbon" is that much better as they think it is. again, that just my opinion.

Noo some people use a laptop on a bed or at a desk. I suppose a laptop sceen is like a monitor. Still, in the real world don't evidence for this huge tablet surge, but do see lots of fad evidence (lots of people who have bought one but don't use it anymore)...:confused:

Surface RT isn't a Windows 8 device. In the NPD report on Windows 8 sales that came out a while ago touch screen laptops were the only form factor doing well among Windows 8 devices and that report did not include Surface RT sales.
 
What MS needed to do was use window8 metro for a tablet os plane and simple.
Then maybe make a windows 8 OS for desktop but leave the metro off this OS.

This way all plateforms would have a updated OS.
Done.

People are using smartphones and laptops more than desktops now, that is the point.

The Surface RT has quite decent sales figures, better than Android tablet launches at the very least.

And I did read that laptops with touchscreens are dominating new sales in the premium segment, and personally my next laptop will most certainly be a convertible. I certainly wouldn't use a tablet or phone that didn't have a touchscreen interface, and remember people are only buying a couple desktops every decade (if that) whereas most people buy a new smart phone every two years.

Are most people computing on a smart phone? I usually see people texting, which really isn't the same thing.
 
The ribbon UI was really nice. The majority of people I know, including myself, really like it.

Haven't tried Windows 8 yet.

That depends on what your definition of "computing" is. A lot of things that typically would be done on a computer just 10 years ago - casual gaming, email, maps, web, movies, music - are probably totally dominated by mobile devices at this point. Productivity, development, and "serious" gaming are the only things that are probably still a sitting-at-a-desk activity and they only account for a small fraction of "computing."
 
It's not clear what she's referring to when she uses the term "computers". I think it's intentionally unclear, which suggests that the argument she's framing is fundamentally disingenuous, or that she's at least drawing erroneous conclusions based on misinterpretation of sales data.

You poor Misguided woman. Why don't you take your Vagina and your touch screens and go design the drapes for your living room somewhere else.

Texting and IM is part of what people have traditionally done on computers, so I think it should be be included.. Those activities aside, web browsing, maps, email, games, etc. are increasingly done on mobile, touch and laptop style devices.

I'd say that this isn't quite true. Sure lots of people will spend time here and there on a tablet or smart phone doing things but for hours of constant work and use, PCs probably still dominate. The metric I'm looking at is the web traffic generated my PCs. While in relative decline, web traffic is still nearly an order of magnitude greater on PCs than mobile devices.

That's not to say that in time that won't change particularly as smart phones and tablets develop more capability. More people may spend smaller chunks of time on a tablet or smart phone doing things but the bulk of "computing" I think is still on the PC.

I don't know of anyone personally that send SMS txt on a desktop. You can do it with the right sort of cellular hardware though, but it's pretty uncommon.

LOL.

Fastforward 10 years when 30" LCD touch-screens are available and a new ergonomic worry has arrived: Having your arms stretched out for 8 hours a day.

Touch is great for tablets and what not, BUT LEAVE MY DESKTOP ALONE.
