Who is camping out for the 5090?

I live 45 minutes from the Cambridge Massachusetts micro center. And in this cold weather I can guarantee you the college kids in Cambridge are going to be wrapped around the building. I for one will never wait in line like that especially in these temperatures for a s***** video card. Are you guys camping out? What store are you doing it at? How long are you waiting before it opens? What's your plan?

There's a Microcenter in Orange County 30 mins away from me. I'm not gonna camp out but I might go to the store early on release day, depending on what I hear about supply.

Leaked benchmarks are showing 20% over the 4090 lol. Imagine camping out to pay $2500 for 20%? Holy shit Nvidia is nerd bullying gamers and gamers are bending over to take it. Phuck that I'm rebeling this generation and will probably rebel every generation thereafter. Used value products are my new interest. Paying premium for bleeding edge which I have done more than I would like to admit is fun but foolish. I've drawn the line enough is enough lol.

The 4090s had massive heatsinks - some taking up as many as 4 slots to handle their 450W power draw. I can't see how this 2-slot cooler is going to be able to handle 600W and I wonder if anything under 30% is going to be due to thermal throttling.

I worry it's a paper launch, with all 3 units received by the stores bought by employees. By the time we get normal supplies Trump's tariffs are gonna add another 25%.

The magic word is "heat transfer"
GB202 is much bigger die than A102 (744mm2 vs 609mm2) running on not much better node (4nm TSMC vs 5nm TSMC) and there is shift to liquid metal - which I guess AIBs will also use.
Also each core will run at lower clock so most probably also at lower voltage.

5090 is very different situation than if you overclocked and increased power limits on 4090 to almost 600W.

Head pumped out by the card in your case and around your PC will increase all the same but for each part of the die and die as a whole might not increase by much.
And if anything 4090 has surprisingly low temperatures anyways - it does look like coolers used were quite overpowered to begin with.

I do expect 5090 to run hotter and louder with higher requirements to your case's airflow.

EDIT://
BTW. I also expect excellent undervolting and card retaining good levels of performance while power limiting it.
It is especially likely given synthetic benchmarks are expected to show much higher performance uplift than actual games - so for games you will be able to power limit card a lot.

Myself when I do get hands on the card (which will be most likely when 6090 comes out) I will undervolt and overclock it at the same time. Did that to 4090 and power usage is about the same for slightly higher performance.

Yeah I'm concerned about Founders with noise, and heat dumping into my case. Reviews will be interesting. That MSI Liquid Suprim is lookin' mighty fine...

Because it's an entire week of your life just to wait in line to play a video game. I don't know maybe I'm Different in my thinking than the rest of the people here on this website.
Pretty sure all of us are just joking...

Same- I live by that one, no way in hell am I waiting outside overnight for this. As I mentioned previously, I'm over 55 plus I'm disabled so unless I'm able to just walk in and get it or just order it online I'm not getting one.

Heck no. The only time I ever stood inline for something was the original XBOX in 2001 at my local Best Buy with short wait of 10 minutes before the doors opened. I had nothing better to do that morning and did get the XBOX with plenty sitting on the store floor plus a copy of HALO and Dead or Alive 3, lol.

I stood in line all day to see The Phantom Menace and we all know how that turned out. :(

I'm going to do everything I can to get one from the comfort of my own home. I'm not camping out in front of a Microcenter, burning PTO at work and freezing my ass off for a card I might not get. Fuck that.

Considering that the 4080s is still the most efficient card and very performant , I am thinking of skipping. Ditto with my almost free S24U to S25U upgrade, there is hardly anything there to worth bothering about, even for a measly $150 out of pocket costs.

I couldn't give two squirts of piss about efficiency. I never have. I want the fastest card I can afford bar none.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure I wasn't giving one fuck when I ran 2x 295X2's in quadfire.

Same here. Camped out for 2 days, tickets to midnight showing, the stories with friends are way better than the movie ever was.

Lol freezing you ass off in Texas? Please. 50f is nothing. It gets in the single digits here atm.

It does get colder than that here.
30F? Seriously, how cold does it get at night?

I think it was -2F here last night, and I'm only in the Boston area. Imagine if you lived in Minnesota or something. 🥶

I had -10f night last night. Fun times. My dog still has to be walked to go to the bathroom and he's 14. Boots and a coat.

I've seen it as low as 2F. Normally it doesn't go below 19F. Still doesn't matter because I'm not camping in front of Microcenter for a video card.

That’s t-shirt weather. :D Was -20F at dawn here three days ago (Minnesota), but has been all over the place since. Don’t think I’ll camp, but might head in a couple hours before my local Microcenter opens to see if I can score one.

Move. Immediately.:)

I would love to get a 5090 on day 1 but camping out for the honor of paying at least $2500 after tax doesn't sound very enticing.

I am so done wirh cold weather. New England can keep it. As I turn 50 this year, I look to warm weather with open arms. Now to just get ahold of the cash needed to move. Hmmmmm.....

On the efficiency note, I have never cared about electricity used or efficiency when it comes to gaming. I have national grid as my supplier and even with a 4090 I never saw above 90$ a month elevtric bill. Why on Earth would you want to get into PC gaming if you were worried about the electricity you're using. To me it makes no sense.

Same. I'm a few years older and we just got done with the -15 degree weather here where today 15 degrees felt "normal". I also agree with not worrying about power consumption when gaming, but we certainly are pushing it harder now as hardware has progressed.

Presumably the hours per month you spend with the GPU at full power are not enough to make a real dent in your budget.

I guess it could be different for some MMO activity.
