What mouse do you use and why?

G7 here. At least in my case the concerns with using a wireless mouse for gaming are non-existent.

Same for me. I've used the G7 before and although I miss the extra side button, the mouse has incredible performance. Easily the best wireless mouse on the market with the possible exception of the MX1100 which I haven't tried.

MX518 here. I used the MX510 since the day it came out and used it for years and years...it recently broke (mouse wheel went out) and my warrenty was obviously up, so I got the closest thing I could to a pure replacement.

I use a Microsoft Habu
why because it fits just like a intellimouse I used before, and I like it :)

I tried one of those on display at the Microcenter in Dallas. Unfortunately the mouse was too big for my hands which is odd because my hands are fairly large.

ICEMAT + G5 = orgasm

i use 1.8 sensitivity in steam @ 2000DPI with the lowest report rate with no weights inside of the G5...head shot after head shots

^^ how do you set the report rate?

go into the "advanced game menu" in the G5 drivers you set it there. i had first thought the higher the better but it is just to precise it makes it feel to weird..set it on the lowest the mouse will pwn

MX Rev. I needed wireless and the more buttons the better (uberOptions FTW). I don't play twitch games so I wasn't worried about dpi or lag -- I've never noticed any issues there.

But this mouse has ruined me. I will never, EVER again be able to use a mouse without the Smartshift wheel. In strat games I use it all the time for zooming in and out of the map; for browsing and documents a normal mouse feels useless in comparison.

Does the logitech software have to be actually running? Like does it actually recognize the game settings and match your config correctly?

Never used a G5 but its Setpoint software should work the same as the MX Rev's. You can store different profiles for different apps, button mappings, scroll speeds, acceleration threshold, you name it. It loads configs on the fly depending on which app you're running. I have my Windows interface set to focus on mouseover (as opposed to having to click in a window to give it focus) and the mappings for different apps are active as soon as I move the move over their window.

The G9 allows you to save some configuration information to its' own firmware thus keeping everything in hardware.

G5. I got one of them on the cheap and it fit my hand beautifully... so I went out and bought another.

Logitech MX-1000.

It still works, and still works well. I see no need to upgrade, though I may graciously donate it to a friend/family member and purchase a wired G5. Batteries are my enemy.

The MX1000 has awesome battery life. If you think that's bad try a G7. The G7's battery only lasts 7 to 8 hours. With that said the G7's battery life sucks, they do come with two very quickly changed battery packs that are very low weight. The G7 beats out the MX1000's performance in terms of responsiveness, accuracy and offers no perceivable lag.

Went from a G5 to a DeathAdder.

Gotta love it. With the G5.. I found my hands to ache after a while, especially in FPS games. No more with the DeathAdder.

RatzPad XT + Razer DeathAdder FTW!

Yeah that's why I prefer the G9. Aside from its' features it doesn't hurt my hands like the G5 does after several hours of gaming.

I have the exact same setup. I love the DeathAdder for the size, button placement and the fact that the mouse wheel is easy to scroll, but feels quite sturdy. Pairing it with the XT just made it even better. The mouse glides over the surface perfectly.

G5 for free, wanted to go for the deathadder, but just didn't want to pay for it.

came from a mx510 and was instantly used to that familiar feel.

+1 for the MX518, the two side buttons a must for gaming and I have lots of spare parts from broken 518s

since 1997, IIRC, cuz once ya get used to these things, there's just no going back:)

I disagree. I used to use the older model of that, and I probably still have one or two floating around. I practically wrecked my thumb playing Diablo II on those things and I had to go back to a mouse as a result. Plus going back now, I've found that those aren't nearly as accurate as modern optical and laser mice are. Probably because almost no advancements in track balls have been made in the last 10 years.

True. Diablo & FPS's are not my thing, so quick time accuracy is not a priority for me. Am more into the TB Strategy/RPG thing. IOW, YMMV. Peace.

I use a Razer Viper. I love how it's nice an small, the buttons are always effortless to click, and there arn't like 7-9 buttons all over it that I wiill accidentally hit and trigger things that I don't want to while playing. I'm using it with a Fragmat and it seems like a really compatible combo.

I tried a couple MX Revolution mice. They sucked. They had a ton of lag compared to the G7 mice. Not good enough for gaming in my opinion. I like the buttons and the ergonomics, but the performance just wasn't there.

Not so.

The receiver MUST be very close to the mouse (a drawback I agree).

I have it mounted right on my G15, like 2 inches away from the mouse, and it's flawless.

This mouse did get a bad rap cause of this problem, oh well.

I still use a mx510. I have a G5 and a MX510, but prefer the 510. Its only a slight difference, but I like the texture of the 510 better.

Plus I have had problems with the G5 clicking/firing when I both hit the button and release.
So one click would double click(fire two shots in CS...which is no good).

It just happens randomly sometimes.

Sorry, I'm still going to disagree. I tried that since that was a big deal with the MX1000 as well. It didn't help for either of them. They both suffered from noticable lag. The G7 is the only wireless mouse I've ever used that doesn't lag and it doesn't make much difference where the receiver is.

wow, back in the days of CRTs and wired mice, the only lag I worried about was on the network. now on top of that people have to deal with input lag on their monitors AND mice too? jeez :p [/fogey]

i use a logitech MX518 because it is the most awesome mouse ever.

MS Intellimouse Optical 1.1 - just used to it. Tried a fancy Logitech wireless one but that didnt stay.

I use a G9 laser. It's one of the few mice on the market that's somewhat receptive to fingertip mousers like me (some people call it the Fatal1ty claw style, which I hate because I've been mousing this way for far longer than his professional gaming career, or even before Quake II came out), and the build quality doesn't suck a nut like Creative Labs' Fatal1ty brand mice.

The cord on it sucks though. It's incredibly stiff and took some ingenuity to position so I wouldn't feel a great deal of cord drag.

Logitech G5 for sure. Mostly for 3 reasons.
Laser
Weight controls. I love the customizable weights
Speed buttons on the top of the mouse. Great for on the go photoshop details.

Sucks man, I can only say mine works and works well. To bad so many had issues with it because I can't see myself using any other mouse for a long time :)

I used to use the Razer Copperhead on a Giant SuperMat made out of cloth.

That was when I played with a high sensitivity in CS:S. (1600 Dpi, 5 sensitivity in Windows XP, and .8 sensitivity in game.)

Now I play with a Microsoft Optical Mouse because I play with a really low sensitivity now. (Whatever DPI this mouse is... 5 sensitivity in Windows XP, and 1.8 sens in game.)

With the Razer and other laser mice, even if I lowered the DPI, or in game sensitivity or a combination, whenever I dragged the mouse REALLY fast across my mouse pad for flick shots or making 180s, the mouse would spaz out, and not even go turn but just shake up and down. With the optical mouse though, I can drag the mouse as fast as I want on the mouse pad, and it does what I want it to in game.
