What a n00b

Wouldn't the temperatures up there make a hybrid less efficient? Or is Alaska not as cold as I think it is?

Maybe the dmv made him take that license plate when they saw he was trying to register a Prius there.

we have a TON of Prius up here...seriously. The trend now are those Smart cars, I see them everywhere.

So do you live in a part of Alaska that has mild winters or something? I can't imagine the Prius or the Smart Car would be very good in the snow. I live in Wisconsin and don't see many of either of those vehicles.

It gets real cold here and a lot of snow...not sure why anyone would own these cars here

BUT

I'm glad they do, they help balance the world. For every person driving a gas guzzling 500hp+ vehicle there is a Prius or Smart car. They are doing their part for the environment...so I don't have to.

P.S. I also give props to the people riding the bus, walking or bicycling...I always honk and wave to show my appreciation for what they are doing to help keep old muscle cars on the road.
 
The carbon footprint created by producing a Prius, specifically its batteries, is enough to offset any potential good it does for the environment. The Smart Car is better, but the mileage it gets seems unimpressive to me given its diminutive size. Honda, Chevy and Ford all make a larger car that gets comparable mileage.

I say bring on the turbo-diesel engines. I really don't see why they aren't offered here. I can't imagine the markup would be more for a turbo-diesel powerplant would be more than for a hybrid.

The Prius get around in the snow just fine! I have a friend that has one and she had ZERO issues! She does loose a little mileage due to the cold.

I drive a VW Jetta diesel to do my part.

...but yeah, for me, i don't understand why cars looks a fugly as they do today. Bring back the bodies of cars from 60-70s, of course with newer innards. Seems that stuff would sell like crazy. Wind resistance can suck it, if tech for electric cars and solar were as good as they theoretically could be (meaning, free energy and insanely long battery life) we could do so many frickin awesome things...

Big rims are very common place. Hard to tell with that picture, but those were probably 28's LOL

I forgot, I had a friend who drove a similarly small car... he said it was awesome in the snow because it was light enough to just glide above anything too deep

I'm having a hard time beliveing thats Alaska. Where is all the damn snow?? Where are all the bears and dirt roads!!! Plus WTF smart cars in Alaska???

I need an Alaska trip to de-bunk all this I guess. When I get there I better see a bunch of crazy vodka drunk mountain people!!! :D
 
I refuse to be pretentious enough to buy an hyper economical car and claim that im saving the enviornment. For 1 the Prius has an extremely large Lithium battery and is very heavy as a result killing killing quite a buit of efficiency, And the cost of mining materials to make those batteries, including shipping, is insane. 2. The smart car.. my god. apparently nobody has seen the crash test videos. Especially not the people here in Dallas that are tooling down the freeway at 80 mph in one. I had one TAILGATE me on the way home from work one day. And I was doing 75 mph.

My advise is that if you want to be economical, get yourself a well built and safe TDI Volkswagen of some kind.

Now all that being said i'll second what steve said about the balence. I'm glad these cars exist so i can drive my Corvette without any fear of hurting the seals or polar ice caps.

I think n00b is appropriate for that license plate. Because apparently they are a n00b at car buying logic.

I've seen a few crash test videos of the Smart Fortwo.. and it did quite well. That being said, I'd still never own one.

Me too! Thanks to all the prius drivers saving gas, so I have more for my Mustang, Boat and Snowmobile! :D

What a lot of people have misconceptions about, is the climate of Alaska. Alaska might be the northernmost state in the US, but they have the most extreme variations in climate from region to region of any state in the US. Most people arn't even aware that Alaska has native rainforests, has regions that get hotter than many places in the mainland US, has regions that are among the coldest in the country, has regions that are a dry tundra, and has regions that have recorded as much as 900 inches of snow in a single winter. It really is the last frontier in the US. Anchorage from my understanding also sees themselves as being politically progressive, although they are the only big city(relative to the rest of the state) in Alaska.

Hybrids in general don't like cold weather as I know my fuel economy utterly tanks in my Fusion Hybrid when the outdoor temps go below 40. The batteries are not efficient at those temps, and US emissions regulations requirements force the drivetrain to continously cycle the ICE on and off to regulate the temps of the emissions control system regardless of whether you need the ICE to be on or not. On the coldest days, your hybrid may never even got into EV mode because it has to continuously run to provide heat and keep the emissions system warm. In the spring and fall I averaged 40-44mpg while last winter I was getting only 35-36mpg.

Volkswagen sells a whole lineup of really great TDI machines at low prices. The only difficulty is acquiring one, as the plant that produces the TDI engines for them only operates in that capacity for a few months every year; most regions outside Europe are restricted the very low five figures worth of TDI engines per year as diesel's popularity over here is still insignificant.
 
I never see the TDI Jettas or Passats for sale around here (Wisconsin). When they do come up they are incredibly overpriced and have an insane amount of mileage on them.

I've always wanted a Jetta I could run on vegetable oil!

Not meaning to bash you, but the concept of the automakers. They don't make very many TDI's because they say there is not much demand for them, yet they are constantly sold out and hard to find. That would lead me to believe that there is plenty of demand for them, they just don't want to make them for financial or political reasons...

Anyway I was able to spot the Noob, it was not due to the license plate, but due to the Prius, that was the giveaway. Only a Noob would buy a Prius as a "Green" car. The cost in pollution to build these hybrids is high:

I agree with you on the turbo-diesel enthusiasm, but the rest of your statement is pure fail. Drive a smart car, then drive a prius. The smart care is an overpriced joke with HORRIBLE gas mileage for its size and acceleration.

And at least the driver admits he's a n00b.
