Vulkan API Gains Multi-GPU and Virtual Reality Support

Kudos to the Vulkan team. Hopefully, developers will take note and users will be able to choose between DX11/DX12 or Vulkan when we run games.

It's interesting how people praise Vulkan because of one game that showed improvement really only with AMD GPUs from about 8 months ago. Even if Vulkan because more popular for PC games than DX 12, it's going to be a number of years before Vulkan would displace DX 11. We're kind of at the same stage with both Vulkan and DX 12 right now, and that is the beginning.
People are praising a new player in what is a direct x market.
That's the part you're not considering and the source of your confusion I believe.
Also this new player is not Windows locked, and you are on a forum which has many non Windows users.

Now it starts to get interesting.
Devs that stalled taking on Vulkan have much greater incentive.

I'd be happy with a competitor in this arena as well. It's been a very long time since you could choose between DX and something else.

Going by Doom performance this is HUGE for gaming. If other developers can achieve 80% of Doom performance with Vulkan then there is no use for DX12.

I think for the future of gaming, Vulkan is making its move. It's a major step that Bethseda is going to go back and optimize its games for Vulkan - regardless of people's opinions of the company, they have made some popular games, and if they can gain DOOM-like performance from Vulkan across the board, that will suddenly put pressure on other gaming studios to follow suit as Bethseda will have a major marketing point over the likes of EA and others. The dominos for Vulkan are starting to fall.

That said, really curious how DOOM will perform in Vulkan under EMA mode. Can't wait.

If consoles or phones had multi-GPU's then i could see a mainstream push. But multi-gpu setups are a small % of pc gamers.

I don't recall Vulkan doing much of anything for me performance-wise in Doom, but still excited to see what it can bring to VR.

I get this, all I am saying is that at this point we're years away from really getting broad based benefit from either DX 12 or Vulkan. Not sure why people think that an change in approach as big as Vulkan and DX 12 is something that was going to major impacts in games any time soon.

We'll see, however the benefits of a cross platform open API are obvious and highlighted in the performance of Doom under Wine on Linux.

OpenGL was already cross platform and ID did great things with it also......

OpenGL was just never as fast in the long run as Direct3D. It still wouldn't surprise me if in the end, DX12 was slightly faster on Windows than Vulkan, just because Microsoft has full control of it's HAL, but perhaps this can increase the popularity of alternative Operating Systems.

Vulkan's already showing promise as being faster than OpenGL.

As stated, the Doom benchmarks under Nvidia hardware just show how much work Nvidia do to optimise their drivers for OpenGL.

Cool sig rig Nytegard!

DOOM is the ONLY game that shows such performance with Vulkan though. Everything else runs worse if not a lot worse (DOTA2 for instance). With DOOM we're talking ID Software's devs; I don't see other developers putting that time in. If you go and look at upcoming games there are FAR more DX12 games announced than Vulkan with most developers only stating that "they're looking at Vulkan.

Bethesda, owning id, may take advantage of their engine in other properties, similar to how EA has done with Frostbyte from DICE.

On the one hand that's optimistic as it would mean more games seeing the best implementation on the market, and on the other, it's effing Bethesda.

DOTA2 runs better in Vulkan than OpenGL. As far as the amount of performance gain, I'll agree, Doom is leading the pack. And compared to Direct3D (9-11), Vulkan isn't quite there yet. OpenGL was always about compatibility, not blazing fast rendering speed. That's one of the problems I have with Vulkan at the moment. You need quite a few separate paths, depending upon the hardware and OS. There's definitely room for improvement to simplify the API so other developers can make similar gains.

Who cares what's announced when DX12 only applies to one version of one spyware and shovelware laden OS. And it has yet to show any performance advantage over DX11. It's a joke in most benchmarks.

Vulkan just needs a few solid titles for a dam breaking moment. The only people threatened by it are closet MSFT investors , employees and fanboys.

Windows 10 has lost some market share to Windows 7 recently in the last two Steam surveys but Windows 10 is still close to half the gaming market and Windows 7 is eventually going to age out so long term growth in Windows 7 isn't likely to occur. And even with all of that, Windows overall has actually increased it's dominance in the Steam survey, with macOS and Linux kind of slowly bleeding share which has been going on for a long time.

Even if Vulkan is going to be the PC gaming API, the only way to change Windows' dominance in gaming is for developers to start developing a hell of a lot more games for Linux. Vulkan will aid that but the question still kind of remains as to just how much demand there is for Linux games. So Vulkan in and of itself isn't a threat to Microsoft, it's how much Vulkan will actually help in getting more games on macOS and Linux. Vulkan being used to develop games only for Windows isn't much a threat to Windows' PC gaming dominance, even if it may not be what Microsoft would like to specifically push Windows 10.
