If I don't OC, then preformance-wise is "Venice" pretty much the same as "Winchester"?

jenneth said:Has this been confirmed yet? I hope not, 2x1024 DDR is much more expensive than 4x512 DDR.
The new Athlon 64 on Venice core also boast enhanced memory controller. Besides a slight performance improvement, Athlon 64 became more tolerant to various DIMM module configurations. Venice based CPUs have finally learned to work with four double-side memory modules supporting 400MHz.
though it still needs 2t with four double sided

Wouldn't it be smarter to first figure out if SSE3 instructions are actually _used_ before rejecting them outhand? Maybe this software simply doesn't look for SSE3 in AMD processors?
It's not like it's unheard of...
Also, it's a weird thing to say because they've already shown in an earlier benchmark (patch superpi) that SSE3 _does_ make a difference.
(cf)Eclipse said:nah, all in different threads. though frallan needs to edit the price.. and hopefully tomorrow some links to vendors into the first post.

Frallan said:Well they missed out the important part of the SSE3 thing. SSE3 isn't going to be as important on the K8 as it is on the Intel solutions since the K8 allready have a better math part (FPs (?)) for dealing with these operations. However some improvments can be expected from the use of new instructions.
Scali said:In 64 bit the FPU and MMX unit is not available. So there it will probably matter more to have good SSE/SSE2/SSE3 performance.
Other than that AMD seems to have the same problem as Intel when going from Northwood to Prescott... The CPUs run hotter, yet they don't really offer more performance. Oh well, at least the Athlons could afford to run a little hotter. I just hope that they'll finally scale up the performance aswell. And it would be nice if Intel managed to get their CPUs scaling up again aswell...
