Vega Rumors

Or the GTX675M in my four (five?) year-old gaming laptop...

So, not bad, but not great?

Yeah I added it's 40% of a 750ti. Soooo for a small laptop might not be bad. Depends on cost but definitely not pushing any boundaries.

I just hope the APU is reasonably good, make AMD money, so they can have more R&D money to make better stuff for us. PCPer results look promising for the APU CPU performance, still no power qualifier to go along with that so we just have to see how it turns out.

Tbh I'm much more concerned about the lack of custom designs this stage.

End of October from what I remember off the top of my head. At least I think that's what Asus said about the release timetable for their Strix card.

Doubt that it was a farce, but it is good to see that the prices are now coming down. I have a Newegg $30 store credit because of this.

Well I meant the AMD is paying retailers $100 for every card that is sold or whatever misinformation that was spread at launch. I figured it was a supply and demand thing all along. ;)

The only ones that were like that are the regular editions, special editions are 50 bucks more to begin with weren't they? With bundle they were @ $599.

Where Are Vega Partner Cards?
Vega partner cards are still sort of on hold. Speaking with the AIB partners with cards in the wings, we’ve learned – once again – that the delay is largely a matter of limited inventory. AIB partners are trying to stockpile enough boards and GPUs to meet channel needs by suppliers and distributors, namely the ability to set a firm restock date (i.e. “we can guarantee a restock in x weeks”). Board partners are waiting on AMD to supply more Vega GPUs for production, at this point. We aren’t sure what specifically is causing the shortage to board partners, but we do know that AMD has Vega wrapped-up in a number of projects: Apple integration and compute integration could be tapping some of the supply, cost/return could be a concern with Vega 56, and switching from ASE to other packaging services could be causing delays.

We do not have any firm dates or release targets from the AIB partners right now.

Amazon still charging more. Arghh. I got 20% off coupon for using Amex with reward points. But they need to get their damn prices online with Newegg. Some time they lag big time on computer parts compared to Newegg. Sort of annoying and they don’t pricecmatch at all either.

I am sometimes wondering about what is exactly going on with websites and what their aim is. Regarding Vega I think there very very few which actually recommended this card or let it pass for another reason then performance. Then why would you report on things you as a website really do not care for? example, I would never ever complain about coffee lake cpu availability nor run stories about it because I don't it is not something I would recommend then why bother ?

Because you know what as soon as the AIB cards hit the next story from Gamer Nexus , yeah ditch RX Vega their AIB cards to expensive it would be better price performance wise if you go Nvidia ....

They're a tech site, and tech news articles get views. It's a topic that people are interested in, and will get a lot of clicks. Clicks -> views -> ad impressions -> money in the bank. Is that concept really difficult for you to understand?

It would be more pro-Nvidia for them to not write the article at all. No mentions of a product = dead product. If they really wanted to bury Vega they would've just stayed silent.

I did not know they were a technology website , thank you for pointing this out. Still unclear to me today what is exactly going on in this world without the help of people like you , thank you ...

If you want clicks you make stories about products hardly any one is interested in , is this a good feature for technology websites to gain more money ?

If you run a tech site, which would you rather have, idle writers or low-paying stories?

It's supposed to be a Vega Pro. While I won't be gaming on it I am eager to see how it works in the new iMac Pros once mine is (hopefully) approved for work.

Tbh I totally forgot AMD is sourcing Vega for Apple. Might this explain the lack of supply? If AMD is having difficulties with yields I think they would ensure Apple gets their cut first before resupplying standalone cards.

Vega seems to be available in plenty now and it’s cheaper than launch. Closest to MSRP it’s been. So I don’t think there are any supply issues at this point.

Gross margin up from 30% to 35% is good news.

margins went back to 2 Q's ago, just as Ryzen came out ;) not great, its better than previous quarter but they need to be higher than 35%, cause the quarter before they were at 33% already, and quarter before that when Ryzen was released for a full quarter they were at 34%, they should have been closer to 40% by now

But that shows they didn't gain any market share or very little with Ryzen, this is what I have been saying. They made 80 - 90 million from previous quarter (GAAP and Non GAAP),For a strong Q vs with a previous weak Q. Looks great from last Q3 though, but its all just looks, not much substance behind the new products. Stock price, its where it should be (and it should be lower), all the good news AMD has had is already has inflated AMD's stock price. They aren't really showing more then what we already gathered for the past 2 or 3 quarters based on Ryzen.

It just shows the increased margins gave them that, not market share. And with margins meagerly going up, shows Ryzen isn't going to give them 40% margins any time soon.

Bad news, Enterprise, Embedded and Semi-Custom segment still aren't able to push Epyc yet. Will be disappointing to hopefuls wanting 2017 Epyc revenue factored in.

Listening in on the conference call, Raven Ridge will have laptops released in the coming weeks, with "premium" laptops in Q1 2018. Thats RR's holiday season dashed.

Hence why they estimated a 15% decline in next quarters sales volumes. We will see if Intel will have something similiar to say in the next couple of days, but I doubt they will say 15% decline or anywhere near that, cause Q4 usually is almost as strong as Q3 in total sales.

Epyc segment still launching Q4 2017 supposedly. Epyc, RR missing deadlines, dont know why AMD is calling for >20% 2017 annual revenue over their previous guidance of 14-18%.

Tbh, its Intel, whos expecting them to have problems? And if you mention those fools who expect Intel to be mortally wounded by Ryzen, I can assure you Im not one of those believers. ;)

Still, AMD is making something.

There are too many wishy washy, non explanations in their conference call, I would say its more "hopeful targets" than realistic.

Hard to say Intel and Q4, because of Coffee Lake's mobile/laptop early 2018 release, that might slow down holiday sales for older Intel products, companies have announced products with coffee lake mobile and laptop products for Nov (preorder), that is really kinda dampen sales of older products I think. Have to see what Intel says about that.

Oh not not saying you were one of them, I'm saying we will get more clarity on why AMD is saying expecting the 15% drop in sales volume, yeah its probably because of not having mobile and server products ready soon enough, but I think it has more to do with Intel's and its preorders than anything else.

Graphics major driver of revenue of Q3, if AMD cant get RR and Epyc in line for Q4, they will not make >20% increase in revenue with GPU demand declining (mining) and CPU sales blocked by Coffee Lake. Wishy washy indeed. Aside from RR and Epyc ramp, we wont see new product announcements until Q2 18 (Zen+), and (Navi) sometime so I'm expecting tough waters for AMD's stock($5-10) if Q4 does not work well.

I agree and this is probably why AMD was downgraded this past Q by Citi and a few others, they probably already had an understanding from other companies uptake of Eypc is going to be slow and Intel's countermoves in the PC segment.

AMD at this point though, even though it might be a little rough they just need to ensure they stay in the black, cause if they go back into the red its not going to be good, its going to be a blood bath. Even though AMD forecasted a drop next Q, its not going to matter, confidence in keeping on track is going to be gone its going to show even with good products they aren't able to keep up with competition if competition is still doing well, Wall Street doesn't like that.

Citi has had it on sell for quite awhile since like 2014, guy just hates AMD, just shows how little these supposed experts actually know. Epyc has had some wins already but it will take them quite some time to really build up sales for it. Intel has done nothing but paper launch a processor, which shows they have noticed Ryzen sales. The worse thing they said was that Raven Ridge will miss Q4 for higher end laptops.AMD still has a ton on their plate to deal with, so them giving a over optimistic guidance is unlikely. Better to under promise and over deliver as the stock market will punish you hard core if you go the other way.

Margins will increase as they have full launch line up. They are coming out with laptop systems soon with lower power and plenty of good stuff. So once the systems are fully intergrated and launched you should see it improve. To be honest I didn't expect miracles with first decent product. I think as the new revisions of ryzen come out they will do better and better. To expect them to wipe the floor with first decent chip is expecting too much I think. As long as they are moving in the right direction they will be fine.

They haven't punished AMD for over promising and under delivering in the past few Q's ;). Do you remember when AMD's initial guidance to go black was? It was Q1 2017. That didn't happen. And the stock price still went up.

You know why they weren't punished? Cause well Ryzen and Polaris hype, helped keep the stock price up. They have very little motivating factors to show investors anymore, Epyc just isn't going to cut it, they have already shown it and as with everything else it really doesn't provide anything over Intel's offerings. AMD needs to show it in their bottom line for further momentum if they can't and it goes to negatives again, all confidence will be lost. Its really easy to see this because Intel vs AMD, AMD vs nV, two horse races, if both companies are doing well, that is one thing, if one company is doing well and better than the other company even with the company not doing so well brings out products that should be doing better, well they are going to have problems convincing Wall Street that the problem isn't with them. This is what AMD has been able to do effectively with Ryzen, the problems for their bottom line was caused by poor products in the past, they will change all that with Ryzen, Eypc, Vega, Polaris, if that doesn't materialize (finally got into the black 2 Q's after the initial thoughts of going to black) and they go back into the Red next Q, they have nothing to say to Wall Street, because pretty much they will be caught with their pants down.

GS just started this Q on selling AMD, Barclays, BMO, and a few others too. Citi was Neutral on AMD for quite some time till last Q (Q2 when they went to a sell). And rightfully so, AMD's stock price is over valued by at least 100%, currently their stock price doesn't equal to what AMD's worth is as a company.

Mobile markets tend to be lower margin at least for the markets AMD's is gunning for. They aren't going for the Apple type markets with high margin products. I would be very surprised to see them in high end gaming laptops too. Cause well Ryzen gaming performance isn't their forte.

PS 15% is a huge drop in sales for one of the best Q's for seasonal sales.

With that said, their mobile share is also basically 0%. Any sales they make will be money well needed.
Anandtech's done their write up, good if your like me and prefer reading summaries. They note despite the predicted revenue decrease of 15% for Q4 from Q3, it would still be 26% higher than Q4 2016 revenue. Bad theres a drop of course, but....Q4 2016, AMD was basically riding on consoles and Polaris. That AMD can sell Ryzen, Vega and Polaris despite Coffee Lake and Pascal and make more than last year, quarter over quarter is the minimal good news that came out today.

Well I would say that is good news too but they really need to start making gains to improve their R&D budgets, they can't ride this out on what they are making now, even 100 million more a quarter then what they just got is not enough (and they won't make that much from notebook sales) to go up against Intel and nV pretty much they have to choose either go up against Intel or nV not both. And as we see it right now, CPU's are their best market. But the GPU side is the only market they have advantages over Intel. Its really a tough place for them to be in. Coffee Lake will squeeze Ryzen, If Zen + is much better in IPC and Clocks that will help them quite a bit (it needs to competitive with Intel 8 core 10nm line up which is slated to come out around the same time), if its lacking in one or the other though, they will have difficulty. We already know 4 core mobile coffee lakes are coming, MS is already using those in surface books, so its a no brainier, all gaming laptops and high end laptops will use those too. Intel has been aggressive in the mobile market because they fear ARM. So how much is Ryzen going to get in mobile, I'm guessing a little bit, but there this no niche for them, at least with Ryzen they had a niche with select groups that needed higher core counts at lower costs. I don't see that with notebooks.

Its the same seesawing we saw when AMD first bought out ATi, graphics were bad so they took R&D out of graphics and focused on CPU, when Graphics came back and their CPU's were doing bad they switched R&D back to graphics, when graphics started failing again, well Ryzen was ready.

Its going to be really fuckin hard to fix what happened with the flop of the r600 and price AMD bought ATi for. Its already been a decade and its still going to be many more years to come.

If either division is down its just a lead weight on a swimming person's ankle. Eventually the person is going to run out of energy. In this case money.

Also Anandtech also brought up a good point with the one time expense to GF last year, forgot about that, which made their numbers look awesome from last year, in fact without that expense, their numbers don't look that great at all, better sure, but nothing spectacular.

Cant run out of money when your making a profit and Ryzen is a long term product along with Epyc and they plan a revision first half 2018 and then the 7nm version in 2019. Lets say only clock speed improves no IPC improvement at all and they can go 500 MHz faster then they do now on this coming revision. Tthey will be pretty much right there with Intel, Intel will still clock better but not by much. 10nm has been a joke for Intel and there plan is just a notebook processor at the moment as they dropped the desktop processor for now. Also most notebooks are running integrated graphics very few actually have a decent video card in them. GPU side has Navi that is coming and surprisingly Vega has sold well enough. Ryzen does really well at low voltages and reduced clock speeds that most laptops run so it might be a close battle there as Coffee Lake gets power hungry fast as the speed goes up. Will AMD dominate, no but they will sell well enough and gain market share, Athlon didn't explode overnight and I dont expect Ryzen too either.

No 15% drop in sales, in all likelihood they will be back in the red. Zen + Revision is based on 12nm, Intel will be on 10nm, 500 mhz increase in clocks is not enough. Cause Intel will get that too if not more (just look how much more they are able to get out of 14nm for clocks). They aren't dropping the desktop processors, where did you get that idea they are dropping desktop? Just because of no stock for DIY? How many chips do you think Dell, HP, Lenovo need? That's most of the marketshare % for CPU's right there. All major OEM's have coffee lake products from laptops and desktops coming out shortly already. If you add up the smaller OEM's with the major three I'm sure that's like 75% of the CPU market if not more. This is why Intel did what they did with kickbacks with OEM's in the Pentium days. AMD was able to get 50% of the DIY market but that only translated to 25% of over all CPU marketshare.

Outside of thread ripper on high end OEM systems, I don't see Ryzen being all that. Maybe RR will change that but I don't see it happening on all their models, unlike Intel which will be using CFL on all their models. Also RR will it be sold with non APU processors? I don't think it will be, I think we will see only APU AMD processors with RR from OEM's, which means its going to go up against i3 Intel CFL, err not a good place to be i3 Intel CFL is formidable, its pretty much an I5 kaby...... on the CPU side RR is going to have issues, its APU will be better than Intel's IGP, but seriously the CPU is much more important on these low end systems.

Why are they predicting this drop in sales too? Its kinda of odd isn't it, its the holiday season, they have no laptop marketshare anyways, its not like having no RR is going to affect them this quarter it should be the same old as usual......

The only reason they are predicting a drop in sales, is because, they have no product to push sales, in the past 2 quarters they had Ryzen, quarters before that, Polaris, then Vega recently. Nothing new for them to push momentum in a quarter that is traditionally a good quarter, not as good as Q3, but its the second best quarter for computer sales. That much of a drop for a company that is finally coming with new products that compete well in the market, is not expected. They should be able to maintain their momentum, a 15% drop pretty much means they don't expect the current Ryzen line up to push sales for them and the seasonal drop which is actually lower than 15% is going to hurt them more than usual.

Cannon lake is dead for Desktop 10nm. Ice lake will be the next desktop likely q4 2018 if it's not delayed as has been rumored, but no conformation, been discussed in the Intel forum. So Intel and AMD will both still be on 14nm on the desktop still well 12nm technically on AMD but little difference. Intel if they stick to their launch will have the advantage in q4 and q1 or q2 AMD will have 7nm Ryzen answer out. That will be the bigger showdown for AMD and Intel then the current battle as the smaller process fight will be pretty much dead as 5nm is the wall for now. Will see how it all pans out in a year or so.
