I've been looking into getting a UPS but I haven't pulled the trigger until today when i saw a deal (i think).

I got 2 of these for $25 each (so pretty much got one for the price of 2)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16842102013

I plan to have some random stuff plugged into them like monitors and externals but as far as i know I have 4 things that will be plugged into the battery.

One 1 of them I will have my computer only plugged into the battery, on the other one I will have my main monitor (22" samsung), an external HD, and my xbox 360 (which will be shut off asap if I see the powers out).

Should that setup give me any problems?

That's not enough power to keep a PC running for long even with the PC being the only item plugged in. You'll drain that thing in less than a minute.

Monitors, routers, speakers, an external drive or two should be fine but not too sure how much power a 360 takes up.

I would plug the PC into that box and the monitor into the wall. Monitors take up a lot of power. That way under power failure just set your PC to shut down at critical battery life.

yeah that thing is for network equipment, etc. It's useless for any kind of decent PC.

Just go on Ebay and grab an older APC SmartUPS. Just make sure the batteries are good, else budget to buy them as well. It'll cost more, but you'll be safe.

I like Liebert GXT2 and I got mine for a great deal on Ebay, but usually they cost more. You can check, though, as < $100 deals come up sometimes.

230W my graphics card pulls more than that. Bad reviews too, anything < 80% on Newegg I generally steer clear from, ESPECIALLY when only 17 people reviewed it. If it was like 1000 or something than it's okay but whoa that's not good.

Actually, lower rating with more people is worse than lower rating with few people. There will always be people giving products ratings far too high or far too low, and the more people there are, the more they average out to a more proper rating.

Maybe a dumb question, but is that cooling fan for the UPS running all the time? Cuz that would suck for people who have quiet systems :|

Fan only kicks in when the UPS is on battery power.

APC Brand 1000VA or larger (700+ watts).

I'd go APC since I was treated very well by them last year.
I had a Backups Pro 1000 die on me. It was 4 years old (it was out of warranty) and wouldn't stay on, it would beep and then shut off.
Emailed APC to see if there was a procedure to test the unit before buying batteries for it since the batteries were over $100. They emailed me back asking for serial number and shipping address.
Gave them the info and then they told me that they are shipping me out a replacement UPS and to put the old one in the box and send it back.
2 days later I had a brand new Back-UPS BR1200 on my doorstep at no cost to me.

So from here on out, I only buy APC and only recommend APC.

I'd probably get a refurb SmartUPS by APC (I'm going to upgrade to one of these from my 550VA units soon):

A guy mentioned this site from another UPS thread earlier this month :D
That thread also had discussion about stepped vs. sine-wave. Considering that you'd want a big unit anyway, I say why not have cake and eat it too.

they have good prices at that site.

this model looks decent for the same money as the one you linked to,

I saw that sale too. I was only concerned b/c the replacement battery would be IBM specific, so I was somewhat concerned if it was proprietary compared to standard APC stuff. Correct me if I'm wrong about this though.

You're more than welcome. I've been buying from these guys for @ 4-5 yrs. and they have treated me very well.
Their stock changes constantly, so if they don't have anything that catches your eye today, wait till tomorrow.
They also have "sales" on occasion but you just have to keep checking the site.

so I was somewhat concerned if it was proprietary compared to standard APC stuff

Looks like it's a proprietary to me. The price of a replacement battery is enough to make me shy away.

Oh, I didn't even notice the replacement battery cost at the bottom of the page.

I HIGHLY doubt you can't get generic batteries in that IBM unit. I'd need to know the dimensions of the IBM ones to tell you for sure though.

i use refurbups all the time, great company, few issues ive had they sent me new battery right away, they are in same state, also got some free units from em for the troubles
