Upgrading in a few days, Thoughts?!

I didn't fully realize that you were adding more things to your "upgrade."

Yeah, I am going to hate myself probably. I should have bought everything last weekend when I was still only at $300. As time went by.. I thought.. Man, it's been over 6 years since I built my PC.. I think I can afford to spend a little bit more to upgrade it more. Although at this point, it's almost like a new build just without a new case, PSU and video card.

This way, I'll get all the parts I will probably upgrade eventually anyway, all at once. Aside from the GPU. I'm hoping that with everything else upgraded, my 650 ti boost will be "okay". I have a friend that can max out FFXIV with a 550 ti. So I am hoping a 2GB 650 will be able to do the same in that game, at least.

Also, I realized something that might be a stupid question but... SSD's are way smaller than regular HDD's, aren't they? Where the heck in the case do they go? I'm trying to figure out where it could go, but I am not comprehending this for some reason.

So now, if I say my absolute max budget, including tax, is $750 (God it hurts just to say that much money), I hope that the parts I have picked out are getting me the best bang for my buck?

SSDs don't have any moving parts. So you mount them where ever you want. You could even leave them at the bottom of the case. Or attached to the side of the case via velcro or tape. Doesn't really matter.

See, I knew that was probably a stupid question ;) It's a big case, there's gotta be lots of spots.

Man the i7 is still calling to me.. but I really can't go any higher on price. But.. I really want it lol. I mean, I could cut $50 somewhere else, and then get the 4770k (Or is the 4820K the better choice.. I think that one is actually $249.99 at MicroCenter right now).... I wonder what's a bigger benefit. 16GB of RAM, as opposed to just 8GB, or the i7 vs the i5... I have about 12 hours to decide before I go get everything!

(Yes I am indecisive and change my mind a lot until I finally pull the trigger)

The 4820K is not the better choice for you since a solid 2011 motherboard is around the $270 to $300 mark. You're not doing anything that would require the i7. The 16GB of RAM is the better choice on account of rising RAM prices in the future. With that said, 8GB of RAM is more than enough for most gamers.

Okay, awesome! The 16GB of RAM sounded a bit better to me than just being able to say "I have an i7!".

Yeah the price difference between this new motherboard (Like $90) and my MSI P7N Diamond board back in 2008 (I think that was about $250?) is pretty surprising to me. I'm kinda happy I'm sticking with MSI again, I did love this board a lot. Even though their voltages in the BIOS seemed a little weird, I got used to the values.

Ya know what's weird though, looking for the MX-4 paste, I don't see it on the MicroCenter site. God, I probably still have my tube of MX-1 or MX-2 somewhere. I bet it's gone bad after all these years, if that's possible. But I really don't see that one at MC at all, unless it's just not online?

I also think it's weird that this time around, every part I'm getting from MicroCenter. My original build I remember getting most from Newegg, one or two from TigerDirect, something from Amazon. My friends build a few months ago, had him get parts from Amazon, MC and Newegg too. This is nice that I can just get them all at one place :)

This is frustrating, I really keep hoping I don't regret not getting the 4770K sometime in the future. You guys know best though :) it's sixty dollars more but.. cheaper than I thought it would be. I will just be so sad if at some point in the future I actually manage to use my processor to it's fullest and wish I had gone with more.

It's... So... Tempting.... At least I only have a few hours left to go back and forth on parts ;) once it's done, it's done! This is the only part that I'm left going back and forth on.

If it were me, I'd go for the i7 4790K and sacrifice the CPU cooler you have picked out. With that processor, there's not nearly the need to overclock (the stock clocks are plenty generous) and it is easy to add a cheap cooler (like a Hyper 212+ or something) at a later date. It also gets you eight threads, which may or may not help in the future (I tend to think it will).

I think the 4790K is way more than I would want to spend haha. The 4770k is what I would go with if I decided to buy an i7 over the i5. Unless, of course, I don't go with the off market cooler. Then it would only come out to about $20 more compared to the 4690k, like you said... Hmm... I wonder how that idea is.

I'm just so indecisive on this processor. I'll probably wake up in the morning deciding on something totally different again! If i do happen to go with an i7, I just hope it's okay going for a pretty cheap motherboard like I am. I almost feel like I should have started a new thread, with the new budget haha. I also guess it's not an upgrade anymore, but a brand new build just reusing the case, psu, GPU, sound card and hard drives. Ahh the decisions!

Oh and like you said, the 4790K is a 4.0ghz processor... The 4690k is 3.5ghz and I was planning to push it to 4.0ghz... So the speeds would be the same, but with eight threads..

You're shopping at Microcenter, right? Quick and dirty, here's what I would do:

i7 4790K and MSI Z97 Gaming 5 bundle: $379.98 http://www.microcenter.com/site/brands/intel-processor-bundles.aspx

Crucial MX100 256GB: $109.99
http://www.microcenter.com/product/..._25_Internal_Solid_State_Drive_CT256MX100SSD1

Windows 8.1: $97.99 http://www.microcenter.com/product/422489/Windows_81_64-bit_English_1_Pack_OEM

Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO CPU Cooler: $29.99 http://www.microcenter.com/product/373900/Hyper_212_EVO_Universal_CPU_Cooler

Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB: $79.99 http://www.microcenter.com/product/...el_Desktop_Memory_Kit_(Two_4GB_Memory_Modules)

TOTAL: $687.94 before tax

Yes, you do lose 8GB of RAM. However, you gain the best i7 you can get for the platform (which will, stock, run at 4.2GHz on all four cores), a CPU cooler that will never fail on you, and a slightly gaudy motherboard. :) (I own a Z87 MSI Gaming board, they are nice.)

If you feel like a big spender, you can add $50 bucks to go back to 16GB of RAM. If not, you can always grab some sticks in the future.

It's not available from Microcenter. You're going to have to get it from Amazon.com.

Yup! :D

Look, if you can afford to get the i7 4790K without losing the 16GB of RAM, go for it. Otherwise, don't bother. Are you doing a ton of video, 3D, and audio editing/rendering? Are you running multiple virtual machines at the same time? Are you playing BF4 12 hours a day? Are you getting that i7 4770K or 4790K for less than the price of a Core i5 4670K or 4690K assuming all things remain the same? If you didn't answer yes to any of those questions, then you don't need an i7.

People who bought the Core i5 2500K three years ago in 2011 will actually be fine with their non-HT having 2500K until 2016 at the earliest but 2017 at best.

See the PC in my sig. I have an i7 4770K but I'm telling you don't need an i7.

Dangman, you are very convincing haha :) Now is it just me, though, or is what jolli just posted some kind of better bundles??

Because I can get this motherboard
http://www.microcenter.com/product/433130/Z97-Gaming_5_1150ATX_Intel_Motherboard
For the same price as the one I was going to get, if I get it with the 4690K. Isn't the Z97 Gaming a 'better' board?

Also, oh man, why can't they have the MX-4 at MC LOL. If I'm picking up my parts today, it will be the most awful hardest thing to wait for just the thermal compound to come in LOL. I set up my PC building area, got me a ton of coffee, and I'm ready to bang my head against the wall today ;)

..Yeah I don't think I can wait for that to come in, if I get it from Amazon haha. Would I be okay with getting something MC has, or the compound the Seidon comes with? Either or is fine. I'm really antsy to get this started. I know it's going to be stressful lol. My first build was super stressful, granted that was because of the DOA parts I had... so maybe my second will go better ;)

Yup, jolli did in fact post the better deal. THe Gaming is technically the better mobo.

Like I said earlier in this very thread, the stock TIM that comes with the Seidon is fine.

Awesome!! Okay, so.. everything is pretty much now decided :) Going to go in a bit to get everything.

As the indecisive person I am, I spent all morning and night in bed thinking "I wish I could buy another case and PSU.. then I would really start from scratch, and have my other PC as a backup or to sell or whatever...". So I even looked at how cheap I could get a decent case and PSU. It seems you can get a decent Corsair 750 watt PSU for under $100. But I couldn't find a good full tower that I liked for cheap enough. Or I really might have considered it.

Plus, I'm not the most optimistic person ;) I'm nervous something will go wrong and then I will be computer less for a while. Like, something will happen to the new parts, and then I won't be able to get the old parts working either! I even had to look at PC building guides to make sure I don't forget something along the line haha.

Don't get that Corsair 750W as it's more than likely the CX or CX-M model. Not worth getting.

I think it was. What's up with those models? I don't know anything about any newer stuff. I still like my trusty 750TX.

If I could have my way and not worry about money after and suffer buyer's remorse, I would definitely grab a new case and PSU. I am sure I could even sell my current PC to a friend or something, who doesn't use it for crazy gaming purposes. Because aside from gaming and doing too many things at once, my current computer is great, honestly. Or it would be nice to have while building this one. I'm nervous to have no computer while building this. Because what if I need it for something ahh.

Speaking of.. I think on my first build, I had to get a flash drive specifically for a few things. Flashing the BIOS might have been one. I have no idea if I'm going to have to do that this time around again.

They're Corsair's lower-end models. If you have a system that actually requires 750W of power, you're going to need something a whole lot better than those models. In some ways, they're inferior to your current TX750. If you're going to buy a new PSU, here's what I'd recommend:
$90 - Seasonic G Series SSR-550RM 550W Modular PSU

NOt really as long as you can connect the motherboard straight to the internet. These days, motherboards ship with UEFIs (replacement for BIOs) that are capable of download and installing updates straight from the internet.

Okay, don't make fun of me. I had a long talk about financials and........ Screw it. I almost feel bad making this current computer just go no where. I.. I am going to just get a new case and PSU. That way I won't stress as much when I'm building this one, in case something goes wrong, I still have my current one. I will just put my old 8800GTS that still works in this one, and put the 650 ti boost in the new one.

So with that said... If I get that Seasonic 550 watt PSU, it's definitely enough for this build? If it weren't such a pain, I would switch that out with my 750TX, and put the Seasonic in my current computer.

I ahve like an hour to fully decide before I go. For a case, I was thinking of the http://www.microcenter.com/product/421948/A71_Chaser_ATX_Full_Tower_Case_w-_Window
I have a Thermaltake Armor, I love it, and this one seems pretty good? Any advice? It seems like the cheapest full tower too, that I can find. That will make it just $200 more for the case and PSU, which is perfect.

If you really want the i5 and 16GB of RAM, I'd contemplate the following (yes I hate AIO coolers that much haha)

i5 4690K and MSI Gaming 5 bundle: $289.98 (in shopping cart) http://www.microcenter.com/site/brands/intel-processor-bundles.aspx

Crucial MX100 256GB: $109.99
http://www.microcenter.com/product/4...CT256MX100SSD1

Windows 8.1: $97.99 http://www.microcenter.com/product/4...ish_1_Pack_OEM

Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO CPU Cooler: $29.99 http://www.microcenter.com/product/3...sal_CPU_Cooler

Crucial Ballistix Sport 16GB: $139.99 http://www.microcenter.com/product/...el_Desktop_Memory_Kit_(Two_8GB_Memory_Modules) (or add $10 to go for the VLP version, probably a good idea)

EVGA 750 G2 PSU: $124.99 - 25 Rebate ($99.99 AR) http://www.microcenter.com/product/429766/SuperNOVA_NEX750G_750_Watt_G2_ATX_12V_Power_Supply

Fractal Design Define R4: $89.99 http://www.microcenter.com/product/406710/Define_R4_Mid_Tower_ATX_Computer_Case_-_Black_Pearl (add $10 if you want a windowed version)

Grand total in cart: $882.92 - 25 Rebate = $857.92

This way you get a power supply (if you click the link it shows some odd info, but it appears to actually be the G2 model - the good one) capable of any SLI or whatever in the future. The case isn't huge, but it will run quiet and accommodate anything you throw at it.

EDIT: Or keep the AIO cooler, which would free up the exhaust fan of the R4 to be a second intake. Add $30.
EDIT EDIT: Or, you know, spend $80 to get the i7!
Random thought: That would actually be a near-silent build, because the PSU has ECO mode and can shut the fan off entirely. No noisy water cooler to worry about, either.

Hahaha. Right now, I was looking at the Corsair 750RM http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0418823

I wanted to stick with a full tower, because I really like all the room, and putting a ton of fans in it (Sound doesn't bother me at all, my current one is loud as hell). And I like that ThermalTake. If that PSU is worth it, a decent PSU, then I will go with it and the case and be done. For under $1100, that's my true and final budget. I have my credit card, I'm about to buy them all, once I get feedback on that PSU ;) I'm so antsy to just get this bought and put together, that I don't even care if that particular PSU is a little cheaper somewhere else. I just wanna go and grab it all in one shot, put it together tonight haha.

Or if that EVGA one is better for the price, I'll grab that. As soon as I get the feedback on the PSU's, I'm going, before I end up spending even more money lol

I was actually looking at that Corsair case, but it was more money. However, that EVGA PSU is cheaper.. so if that Corsair case is a better all-around case, I would be able to afford it over the Thermaltake. I also picked the TT because I love my current TT Armor still :) Wow, they only have one in stock of the Corsair lol

Plus it has a rebate! Sounds like it was meant to be! :p

See [H] Review: http://www.hardocp.com/article/2014...te_760t_full_tower_case_review/7#.U90xdM90z-g

It only comes out to be $16 more than with the other case and PSU, and then the rebate too of course. So now I'm looking at:
Subtotal $972.92
Tax $83.96
Grand Total $1,056.88

Under $1100 ;) I think I'm done then. And the PSU is modular!! Something I totally wished I had the first time around lol

Just make sure the EVGA PSU is the 750G2 when you pick it up.

Too bad you can't get some red RAM to match the rest of the colors that build somehow ended up! :p

Like... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...619&cm_re=g.skill_ddr3-_-20-231-619-_-Product

Ok I'm going away

Oh I just realized, I need a CD/DVD drive... I guess I can just use the one from my current PC though, instead of buying a new one?

Hahaha you're killing me. it would look nicer with red RAM LOL Especially on a windowed case...

Actually screw it.. It's $15.99 if I get this http://www.microcenter.com/product/413641/SH-224DB24x_SATA_Internal_DVD_Burner_-_OEM And this way if my friend wants to buy this PC, he'll have a drive in it and I don't have to worry about it lol

If your current one is SATA, it will work fine. Then you can just wait for a cheap sale to get another.

And yes, it would look much nicer! And that Newegg RAM is 2133MHz for not much more... Too bad you can't find like a stick of DDR3 to hold you over until that Newegg RAM arrived... lol...

EDIT: Not that I in any way advocate buying something and then returning it when you are dissatisfied.

Yeah I wish I could wait, but.. I.. I can't! I need to do this! I'm about to checkout haha.

I'm in the process of upgrading can't wait to be in your shoes...:)

I have been dying to do this for years now. I've helped friends with builds, and it was torture to pretty much spend their money on parts.. while my poor PC is ancient ;) This was pretty impulsive, actually. And it's gone from a motherboard, PSU and RAM to a brand new build. Oh boy!

Okay it's done. Now just waiting on the email that everything is ready, and I can go pick it all up :D Oh my God I'm so excited lol. Six years of waiting, all I've ever upgraded is my GPU and that's it. Thank you guys so much for all the advice :D I'm sure I'll have more questions when I'm putting it together and something goes wrong like usual for me :p

Congrats! Should be very nice, with lots of room to grow.

Again, make sure they actually are giving you the 750G2! The picture is of it, the description is of it, but there is some confusion in the title for the product. I'm confident it is the G2 and they just modified the old power supply listing, but it's good to be vigilant in case they try to stiff you with an old unit.

I will definitely check the PSU! Got a little delayed in leaving because when I stood up to go, I somehow rolled my ankle, heard a snap, blacked out completely and fell to the floor. And all I could think was "Oh God I want my new computer!" Haha. I can bear weight on it, so... that's good enough for me to go to MicroCenter :p Priorities!~

I made it there, hobbling! Now the build time shall begin, while icing my ankle. Some dude in front of me got the same case, we got the last two in the store.

I really hope I do all of this right, and don't short something out!
