Unknown 9: Awakening

Not an excuse but for me importance is the gameplay and story and both are fine.

Looks like a lot of reviews are criticizing the combat and animations. For $50 I would expect a better production value.

I'm wondering what happened with this game. I feel that it was rushed out the door. The in game characters have no eye animations. They all have that deer in the headlights death stare look to them. The cut scenes are laughably bad. I'm going to assume that the cutscenes were manually animated because the characters look like puppets. The sad part is that the game has some potential but they probably ran out of time or funding and released whatever they had ready.

It's likely the other way around. Most character animations are procedurally generated and then tweaked to remove errors by hand. In the case of Mass Effect Andromeda, the tweaking hadn't been done at all when the game launched leading to the animations being lambasted for being terrible. That's more than likely what's going on here.

I was going to say, would they take time to fully manually make animation like a Disney 200 millions dollar movie..... it would be quite something with good animator (and expensive).

(or mocap if that what people mean by manual, should also be great and expensive), you still need good working rigged skins to follow your motion, looking at the first minutes of gameplay at least some animation seem high work-quality, mocap level, but games first 15 minutes get way more work than your average moment.

Can't say anything about the in game, but the cutscenes were supposedly mocapped.

They were. There is behind the scenes video of the voice actress wearing the suit and going through the process.

That said, I doubt they did that for everything. The rest was most likely procedurally generated.

The game hasn't exceeded 285 concurrent players all day.

Admittedly, I don't think we've hit the all time peak but this is abysmal so far. If this breaks 1,000 concurrent users through the weekend I'll be surprised.

Actually the story is decent and the characters are good enough. Finally a linear game to play that isn't a complete turd. I am having some fun with it. Halfway I think through chapter 2 and 2.3 hours in already. Not a bad start and much better than Space Marine 2 imo.
And yes, she looks worse in the game but the game graphics are from I think 2015/2016 era.
Geez, I will never again listen to your game recommendations! Enjoy though.

I watched a gameplay video. Very disorienting game with animations and seemingly cut scenes drop you right into the middle of combat? Looked like a literal mess in terms of gameplay.

People can have different choices you know. It’s a strange concept.
Not exactly. Your opinions just look a bit suspect when "gaming journalists" and/or paid shills do the same to bring the bottom line opinions & ratings upwards...

wtf are you smoking man? Must be good? I state my opinions as I like different things. For example I don’t like Elden Ring yet everyone loves it. Space Marine 2 is a turd but everyone loved it. I liked Uncharted series just like everyone else did but there might be few who did not. I even liked Ass Creed Mirage but hated ghost recon breakpoint. Not sure what is your point here.

This game is ok. It is not going to win awards. Story is intriguing. Gameplay is simplistic but works and I am more interested in the concept of real world vs fold.

I am neither a journalist nor do I have time for that crap. 👀. I also don’t expect any rating changes just because I said something on a forum. lolwtf.

How about games that are taking nosedives but you're still a big fan?

I never claimed I am a fan of this. It is just something to tie me over till BLOPS6 and Dragon Age. Plus I wanted a linear game and this one fits the bill.

Also I am not making claims of asking people to go out and buy it. I got it with AMD bundle code I got from someone for 10 bucks including this and space marine 2.

I think DA Veilguard is going to bomb, so hopefully you don't get burned by that one. I received this & SM2 for "free" from AMD, but I'm not excited for these choices (SM2's lack of true ultrawide support, not the shoddy port patch job they brought).

Both games are meh but for 10 bucks can't complain too much. This one plays better than SM2 imo as gameplay is repetitive but SM2 is ad nauseam same thing over and over.

Even a lot of the shill sites like IGN are giving this game bad reviews. That tells you that its especially bad. So bad that even the mouth pieces at the mainstream media outlets can't save face or make any convincing arguments favoring this game. Sometimes something is so bad its universally accepted as trash. That being said, sometimes people like bad things. I like some objectively bad movies and games myself.

I'm not saying that's the case here. I haven't played this game. What I've seen on it doesn't look good, but I'm not trying to debate KickAssCop or anything. I'm simply saying that his opinion seems to be an outlier where this game is concerned.

Stats as of 1:20PM Central Time. Being a Saturday afternoon you'd think it would peak higher than it did on Friday during the middle of the day but it only has about two-thirds of the numbers it did. The game literally has less than half the peak player count of Concord on its launch day. I don't know how the player "owner" estimations are calculated but they seem optimistic to me.

Poor marketing, buggy and poor gameplay seem to be the killer here. I hadn't heard of this game until recently. Personally I don't care for the Asian waifu look in games, though I prefer realistic looking characters. FF7 Remake is a good example of characters that look nice but also quite detailed.

Realistic doesn't have to mean homely or ugly.

I do agree with you in that the marketing was lacking here. That tells me that at some point Bandai/Namco figured out they had a turd on their hands and didn't want to burn good money on marketing. I think they did the bare minimum to try and generate some revenue, but I don't think there was all that much confidence in the finished product. It's widely known that Sweet Baby Inc. had a big hand in this game and its source material. Gamers will avoid it on that basis alone. All the usual trailers, gameplay streams before release, etc. were done and they simply got no engagement what so ever. They had a max of some 300 people watch the gameplay live stream. Trailers for the game got super low view counts and reactions were overwhelmingly negative. I mean, the gameplay and trailers themselves don't look or sound all that interesting to me. People have come to expect garbage games out of Sweet Baby Inc and its ilk.

It's no surprise the response to the game was either disdain or apathy. The latter of which is worse than people hate streaming it or simply bashing it.

Even IGN says it is janky. I watched a gameplay video and had no idea what the hell was going on. I'm not sure if it was cut in such a way or if the animations were that bad. It was impossible to tell what was going on. Seems like at its best it is a generic action adventure game. At worst, the Steam reviews claim it is a buggy crappy game. The developer seems to be new, in Quebec. Probably ex-Ubisoft employees.

Reflector is a disruptive video game studio driving innovation in entertainment by creating immersive story-driven universes. These expansive worlds consist of interconnected tales that can be enjoyed independently or consumed together, allowing audiences to shape unique, personalized adventures.

...guess it didn't pan out as they hoped. :ROFLMAO:

Bandai Namco was probably too deep into it when they realized they had a turd on their hands.

Funniest is when you kill someone and their bodies are half leaning in the air without support. I quite enjoy doing takedowns like that.

I am into the story now so for sure will finish it. Been having decent time with it. Some of the powers can lead to hilarious results.

Bandai Namco acquired Reflector 4 years ago, probably based on the big promises being made about the IP. They were definitely too deep into it. You just have to wonder how long the game was in this bad a state with the competence of the diverse developers that Bamco pushed it out the door.

Chapter 10 now. 3.5 chapters to finish it. Not a bad game tbh. I had a good time with it and there is tons of lore etc stuff for people who spend time on that crap. Story is what kept me around and gameplay definitely is fun albeit a bit easy on normal difficulty. Janky af though.

The game comes across as a 5/10 if you are being generous. No, its probably not the worst game ever made but its bland and mediocre in just about every way. And for a AAA release in 2024, the dated mechanics and graphics are unacceptable.
