Unknown 9: Awakening

I think this just about sums it up....

Ignore the 40 concurrent player count at this time a night. Well....sort of. I would simply say that at this hour its not surprising its low. But that 24 hour peak is telling. We are one week on from the game's release and its 24 hour peak concurrent player count is only a third of what it was the day the game launched.

By the same point in its life cycle Concord was doing better than this.

Generally play time doesn't mean too much for single player games, especially if they are shorter. But this is abysmal. Don't think anyone will care though. If it wasn't bundled with Space Marine 2 for AMD, and this thread, I would never have heard of it.

Worst game ever made is Concord you can't even play the game if you wanted.

I really don't think it is. Concord looked extremely derivative of other games in the genre. Perhaps it lacked the polish of other similar games but I doubt very seriously it was that much worse than it's peers outside of it's character designs and bizarre decisions by Sony on how to monetize it.

People who played it mostly reported it was mediocre, but not necessarily awful.

It was a financial disaster, but that comes from decisions like making it cost $40.00 instead of free to play. It's character designs also preclude the idea of a traditional free to play / cash shop monetization type business model. Who wants to buy skins and cosmetics for characters that ugly and unappealing?

While it's an absolute failure from a business perspective, I doubt it's worse than Dustborn or Unknown 9 n terms of gameplay or technical execution.

I think most of those are the people that got it free with the AMD bundle. Seemingly, most people who got it with that haven't touched it so most people who got it for free likely haven't even bothered with it. I have to assume they got more money from AMD than people actually buying it. :p

Developer Reflector Entertainment is laying off employees as they say the game did not meet expectations. No shit. They were currently developing the next game when Bandai-Namco made the business decision. Remaining staff will be put to work on an established Bamco IP. Reminder that this was supposed to be the vehicle to launch a whole "transmedia" universe like Concord was supposed to do for Sony. The co-founders of Sweet Baby Inc. developed the Unknown 9 IP and sold it to Bamco.

To be honest, I'm surprised that game is this popular right now.

We all love to make fun of games like Concord and Dustborn. Dustborn, while probably the worst of these games in terms of its gameplay and general content isn't the biggest flop considering it had a much more modest budget. It was funded in part by government grants from the Norwegian Film Institute who has a history of wasting money on projects that will never show any return on investment. Unknown 9 Awakening's budget has never been publicly disclosed as far as I know, but its estimated to be somewhere around 200-300 million dollars. Pretty much the norm for AAA releases these days. That puts it in the same range as Star Wars Outlaws and Dragon Age the Veilguard in terms of budget but did so much worse than they did. Not that those made any money, but they lost less than this game did. Hilariously, fewer people played Unknown 9 Awakening than Concord. It was easily just as woke but less interesting than Overwatch for Chubby Chasers was.

This game was probably paid for in some way to be bundled with AMD CPU and GPU's. I'd wager that most of the 285 concurrent players were a few AMD CPU or GPU owners that tried it because it was free and the rest were Youtubers of varying popularity that got ahold of the game to make content out of it. The latter probably didn't actually pay for the game in anyway. The people that bought this or received it was likely 3 or 4x the max concurrent player count (as people game at varying times) and you can probably triple that number adding in console sales. We'll probably never know how many refunds were issued. At the end of the day I doubt the game sold more than 1,500 to 2,000 copies in total counting the ones that were bundled with AMD hardware. I doubt this game broke $100,000 in sales against a $200 budget.

I would absolutely bet money that content creators on Youtube made more money talking about Unknown 9 Awakening than the game did. Concord probably only flopped harder due to having a larger budget and because Sony refunded all the money it made meaning it made $0. Though reportedly, they got about $178,000,000 back as a tax write off softening the blow of that. Meaning that if we had a full picture of the data, this POS might have flopped even harder than Concord. It's no surprise that Bandai/Namco fired everyone at Reflector Entertainment, which was mostly staffed with SBI employees as this was Kim Bellaire's pet project.

Really doubt it cost that much, unless it was a really long and troubled development cycle. If it did, I am not sure what to say. It comes off more like a moderate budget AA game, but with bugs, no marketing, and poor gameplay/story.

All time peak was 6,199, so it at least sold that many. :ROFLMAO:

Being a bad game aside, the marketing for this more or less didn't exist. I only ever heard of it in relation to the AMD bundle. Bandi-Namco got hosed on this.

Nope. All time peak on Steam was 285 for Unknown 9 Awakening. I literally posted the information above. Note, I selected max time. Granted, that doesn't include consoles, but I doubt it did much better there since people would have had to pay for it.

I was looking at the bottom for Twitch stats apparently. 285 is quite funny. As I said, Bandai got hosed on this. Good news is most of their studios are Japanese so I doubt these people will get moved around to those games.
