Tribes Beta [H] players?

Now this is a fun online fps. I'm DesertCham in-game. Only played a few rounds, but had a blast in each. :)

wow, I never played Tribes before but after playing BF3 for the past couple months its a great change of pace. Its not the most user friendly game but I can see why its a favorite among PC gamers, I couldn't imagine this on console lol.

I went ahead and got the $30 pack, I figure if nothing else I just bought a cheap good game. Not sure what I want to spend the "gold" on if anything yet, anyone got some pointers for a n00b?

Here is a good noob guide, but keep in mind that its outdated with regards to the classes, but there is still a lot of good info.

This was posted on the official tribes forums.

Take your gold and save 1200, this will allow you to buy an extra 30 days of booster if you need it. Spend the rest on weapons that cost either 42000xp or 75000xp. These are where you get the most gold to xp ratio. IE you are using your money most wisely. Pick the weapons in the class you think you will use the most.

http://forum.hirezstudios.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=313&t=59977&p=760384#p760384

You can find a list of most of the weapons there and the ratios.

240/42K = 175 XP/gold

- (PTH) Bolt Launcher, Explosive Nitron, Thrust Pack
- (STL) T5 Grenade, Recharge Pack
- (SLD) Spinfusor, Eagle Pistol, AP Grenade, Utility Pack (new!)
- (TCN) Sawed-off Shotgun
- (RDR) Grenade Launcher, Whiteout Grenade, Jammer Pack
- (JUG) Spinfusor Disc
- (BRT) Sticky Grenade

420/75K = 178.57 XP/gold

- (INF) Prism Mine
- (SLD) Proximity Grenade (new!)
- (TCN) Sparrow, Motion Sensor
- (DMB) Mines
- (BRT) Nova Colt, Heavy Shield Pack

780/100K = 128.2 XP/gold

- (PTH) Light Assault Rifle
- (STL) Phase Rifle, Falcon
- (INF) Stealth Spinfusor
- (TCN) Thumper
- (JUG) MIRV Launcher, X1 LMG
- (DMB) Heavy Bolt Launcher

Above I quickly bolded the weapons I think are good or powerful for various classes. If it is not bold I would wait to purchase that with XP or gold till last.

Also make sure you farm the badges, they give you bonus XP. Some of them are really simple you can easily build up 60k xp in just a few hours of play. I think for the fun factor you should spend your early xp unlocking all the classes first.

i got into the open beta last night. pretty fun game, but i am wondering if anyone has been able to get SLI to work in the game? not that i really need it since i can run medium settings with 60fps at 1920x1200 with a single 8800GT but it would be cool to see what two of them could actually do with the game.

nevermind already lost interest in the game.. way to pay to win for me. also sick of wasting 5 minutes repairing a generator only to have it destroyed in 2 seconds.. CTF is boring as fuck, team deathmatch is even more retarded. if i wanted that i'd just go play COD.. i'll give it credit, it was fun at first until i hit level 7 and it started throwing me in games with level 25+ players and now i'm sick of the game, stupid match making system.. but even for being a beta there are still tons of things wrong with the game.

Been playing for a little over a month now.

I've yet to see anything remotely pay to win, hell I I haven't even unlocked any of the additional classes, just playing path/sold/jug

Don't bother repairing generators, they auto fix themselves after 5 minutes, and because you spawn in armor anyway, there's very little point to defend them. Focus on guarding flag instead.

It's not perfect, but you're complaints seem a little off base.

The pay to win complaint is really a controversial one. The first thing I would say is even if it is, so what? I never heard people complain about BF3 when you had to "play" to win, because lots of the good stuff you must wait to unlock. And as far as I ever say in BF3 there was no way to ban people of high rank from servers who had all kinds of goodies you did not have. You can choose to either use $50 or $30 to buy a gold package that will also give you boost for a while. And that is no more expensive than any other game out there these days. This speeds up how fast you get things. In tribes they at least give you those first 6 levels of play. I think they should add a new intermediate level that is say ranks 6 -18 or something.

Second, some weapons you earn are definitely better in the right situation. And my solution to someone new is to tell them to avoid those situations. The best teams in the game use players that are sporting a very stock loadout. Pathfinder with all the defaults is the best capper in the game. And the soldier with all defaults is the best way to play a variety of positions. The default technician which you can unlock in one day of play is the best vehicle pilot. Another couple of days will get you the important perks for each class. The default jug is also one of it not the best generator attackers and defenders. Sentinel is a defensive beast and his default gun is the best. However some upgrades give him the ability to fight better in the field, but you should not be fighting anyway, just run away and shoot long range or let them kill you.

The changes in tribes are very much like TF2, in the right situations guns seem better, but on average they are only sidegrades, or specialty weapons.

Considering you can earn every fucking thing without ever paying, and some things you cant even get with paying. It's not pay to win, not at all.

Man, just getting some more time in with this after they patched the shit out of it... so much fucking fun.

Last time I played it was way different. Main menu was green and bland and the unlocks were this weird tree system.

Hi-Rez has done an impeccable job of listening and staying true while modernizing the Tribes way of gaming.

Add me in-game, name is Cutsman.

ok gave the game another try only this time i played with my roommate and a few of his friends on skype and had a blast.. grr why the heck don't they have VOIP in the game!!! it makes cordinating flag caps/gen defenses so much easier then having to constantly time/use VGS commands. even so it still annoys me seeing level 6 and 7 people using classes i'm still no where close to unlocking. the infiltrator class is annoying as hell though, so many people spam that class. me personally i think they go invisible way to fast. there needs to be a much longer delay in going invisible after they fire.

though so far the 3 things in my opinion that need to get fixed ASAP is..
1. the friends list is broken beyond belief. my roommates been offline for 4 hours now and it still shows him as online and in game.
2 and 3. (theres 2 different ways to cause this) if you exit a match before it changes maps it instead completely disconnects you from the login/master server which then causes the game to hang/crash or if you exit the game while on a server it causes you to disconnect from the master server and hang as well. the other problem i noticed is that while they say you can exit a match before it ends and get the XP after i've noticed that due to the disconnect from the login server when you exit causes you to not actually get any of the XP even if you restart the game and log back in.

i know the friends list thing is a known issue since my roommates friends who have been playing for a while were the ones that explained how to even get it to work to me. but i'm not sure if the disconnect thing is a known issue or specific to me since i didn't bother to ask them.

oh and side question for any of you guys that have been playing for a while, during the map change when the screen goes black and the map finishes loading, do you all have that stupid white pixel in the middle of the screen? because i know for a fact i don't have any stuck/dead pixels and was wondering if its just something everyone gets or if i have something screwed up.

and to reword my original statement as a pay to win, i kind of miss wrote that, i should of said pay to have an advantage.. was just pissed off last night after getting stuck in 3 or 4 games with all level 20+ players that were friggin one shoting me and i couldn't kill them since i was only level 6 using default level weapons and armor.

ok gave the game another try ...snip

Glad to hear you're having a better go at it.
I'm going to second some of the the things others are saying. The default weapons are all really pretty decent. The 'upgrades' to alternate weapons are usually like TF2. That is, you gain something and lose something. For example, the tech's main smg is a really decent weapon. Good damage, relatively tight spread, ok range and high rate of fire. I personally like the upgrade thumper. While it does more damage, and is AOE, the fire rate is really slow, it has a ballistic trajectory and very limited ammo. and if you are packing a repair gun, it's the only weapon you have.

This is usually the case across the board. The heavy's mortar upgrade has a higher area of effect, but lower damage, etc. The sentinel's energy beam can do more damage, but because it's tied to your energy, reloads much slower to get that damage.

And as a perennial tech, I am going to disagree with someone's statement, above, about the generator. It is important, and as you play, you'll learn to defend it so it doesn't go down. After a few upgrades, those turrets start being pretty effective, and the radar can be key to seeing someone coming in for a fast cap.

yeah so far techs been my primary but i'm starting to get sick of it.. the SMG while nice still takes 3 clips to friggin kill a juggernaut yet he just lobs a couple grenades at you at you and you die instantly because you have crap for health even maxed out.. its just little things like that, that piss me off. second, why the heck does it take the same amount of time to repair the light turrets as the huge base turrets? seems kind of dumb to me.

i never get why the repair class always has the lowest health or weapons in every game when they are the ones stuck having to stand there repairing crap while everyone's shooting at them. if anything they should be the ones with all the armor.

TCN kinda requires the Thumper. It's my favorite class.

If you prefer defense like the TCN, try the Doombringer.

It's about mobility. if you let them get close, you're screwed because your mobility advantage over theirs goes away, particularly if they have an AOE weapon. If you can keep them at range, you're going to be fine if you have a turret down. Head to head in a hallway you will always lose. Especially if you don't have any help. At this point, my biggest problem is the damn infiltrators, not the heavies (which I can usually handle). They can sneak in, one shot me with that three-shot grenade launcher thing, and then have at my generator. Unless I have help, that geny's going down.
And btw, if your team is playing right, you really need the generator up. heavies placing force fields need it, and if they are spamming mortars like they should, they will need the ammo refill.
And that's the nature of class-based games. Lots of rock-paper-scissor.

agree i friggin hate the infiltrators, their rhino SMG does to much damage and is to accurate short and long distance. they go invisible way to fast and dont come out of being invisible fast enough.. its so annoying when they start firing at you and all you see is this gun going back and forth. by the time they kill you they are just finally becoming visible, then poof their invisible again. i also think the generator needs more HP, its to easy to destroy and takes way to long to repair since you have to repair it to 50% before its even active.

but i will say its quite fun lobbing grenades at invisible infiltrators hiding by your generator and watching them attempt to run away from the explosion without becoming visible. the one thing i have to give them credit for though is not making the friggin sword an instant kill. at least they give us some kind of fighting chance against them. either way i find it more satisfying killing those sob infiltrators that think they bad asses trying to sneak up on me while i'm repairing.

oh well i'm complaining to much, i'm going to go make some more level 20+'s cry while my turrets massacre them.

I love that part. I'll be up above the gen, fixing a turret or whatever, and all I see is a bunch of number piling up down below ground followed by a kill. Very satisfying.

I've recently been watching some of the e-sports broadcasts for tribes, and they keep mentioning how good techs are in vehicles. Might have to give it a shot.

In game name is Thunderfunk. Really loving the game so far and I feel Hi-Rez listens to the community enough that most of the major balance issues will eventually be ironed out.

yep, but i found a new troll trick.. when you run in to go snatch a flag drop a turret at the same time and watch people get pissed off, its also great for killing the opposing teams flag carrier since they are usually coming in right around the same time. but the advantage is people end up trying to kill the turret instead of you. :D it was awesome though, the second game i tried it i had 15 kills just from ski'ing toward people and dropping turrets right in front of them and continuing on my way to their flag.

New patch today. Patch notes HERE

Major Highlights

Sunstar, a new Capture the Flag map,has been added to the Quick Play rotation. Note that this map is not in its final design or art state.
Temple Ruins, a Capture the Flag map, has been added back to the Quick Play rotation after significant revisions. Note that this map is not in its final design or art state.
The European server region has been split into two regions in order for users to better select the region that gives them the best performance: Europe - London and Europe - Amsterdam.
The Asia server region has been split into two regions in order for users to better select the region that gives them the best performance: Asia - Japan and Asia - Singapore.
A variety of physics changes have been made in order to fix several issues impacting the fluidity of movement. This includes the elimination of several items that would cause deadstops and hitches, as well as a bug that would allow you to ski/jet along the boundary wall. Changes were also made in order to fix a few issues that would occur when traveling up steep hills. Additional improvements are planned for future releases.
A variety of improvements to server performance have been implemented. Additional improvements are planned for future patches.
Users may now choose to turn off unwanted HUD elements using the SETTINGS menu.
Reticules and HUD icons have undergone a significant polish pass.
User settings are now stored server-side. Settings may be reset as a result of this patch, but future patches should not have to reset bindings, etc.

Weapon/Balance Items

The Impact Nitron grenade will force you to drop the flag if it is used for self-damage.
Increased Heavy run speed by 20%.
Increased maximum reduction of weapon switch time on the Quick Draw perk from 20% to 50%.
Modified inheritance on the Grenade Launcher (now 50%).
The cost of the Tactical strike was increased to 4000 credits from 3500.

Additional items in the patch notes.

The change to nitron grenades is huge! For me, at least.

The pro teams are goingto be pissed about the boundary forcefield skiing nerf. EVERY pro cast I saw had their cappers doing that on dry dock.

yeah i saw some people trying to do that the other night, some did it and some failed miserably.. i figured out what they were doing so i just stood there waiting for them to screw up and then recap the flag :D

i'm glad they increased the cost of tact strike, so sick of seeing that crap spammed from across the map. yay for new maps as well!!!!!!! the current ones were getting boring as heck.

so far looking through the patch notes i have to say i'm liking the changes, almost everything i was hating especially in the UI/menu screen seems to be fixed now..

heres the link for people to lazy to comb through their site to find it.

Ping is not reporting on the Scoreboard correctly. A hot fix is being developed to fix.

good to see they are fixing that because i sure as heck know i don't have a 48 ping in this game since the server location is in california and i know for a fact my ping to california is never lower then 70 due to comcasts routing up here. but the one thing i do notice is when it reports my ping as 48 i lag like a mofo but if my ping is 55 or higher the game runs smooth, anyone else ever notice this on the west coast server?

wow the menu screen is so much smoother now, before it felt laggy as hell just to go through the menus.. maybe its because they got rid of the rendered animation and replaced it with the buy gold ad's but i don't know.

I do not think 500 cr will affect tac strikes much. Glad I recieved most of my tac strike badges before this though.

so far going through an entire map cycle i've only seen tact strike used 3 times even on the map with the 2 ships i saw it used once. usually it gets spammed like hell on that map.

gotta say though i like the new maps.

I really like how the game evolves, and I hope it continues to do so after release. I played it a ton late feb/early march and kinda took a break, looks like im going to have to hp on again with the new patch and check out the new/updated maps at least.

The new patch is kinda weird. Seems like there are a lot of places that the terrain glitches now and you can get stuck or whatnot.

The Jackal is a beast. The most fun in this game I've ever had thus far despite them nerfing it.

No, F the Jackal, lol, that gun is CRAP. It's also silly expensive since I just spent some gold on unlocking the freakin class.

Considering you can earn every fucking thing without ever paying, and some things you cant even get with paying. It's not pay to win, not at all.

This, however, if they have no decent in game voice, i will not buy, BF3 was a huge letdown in that department. I need to be able to bark out orders at random public players. Good players are "usually" douches and elitist and not worth Ventriloing / teamspeaking for.

I'd rather enjoy the game with people who are at least nice, or at least help someone get better.

yeah tribes definitely isn't for you.. its why i finally stopped playing again. to many useless elitist bitching and moaning about every one. finally got fed up with it. pretty much the only time i get on is if my roommate and couple of his buddies are going to play. we'll just troll as technicians and put turrets everywhere.
